Been playing the 20 free, along with the AC/DC shit I imported. Some of the free songs are actually pretty good. I'm not completely surprised by this or anything, and others are pretty fucking lame. Still, I'm happy there's some shit worth it.

Can you fully customize your own band in this game? Like choose your vocalist, bassist and drummer if you're doing Guitar Solo Tour, for example?
D Mac
11-17-2008, 04:16 PM
You can set a "Stand in" on any instrument you are not playing. Basically has to be a created character.
I created 4 characters and alternate them at times.
Kane Knight
11-17-2008, 05:44 PM
Can you fully customize your own band in this game? Like choose your vocalist, bassist and drummer if you're doing Guitar Solo Tour, for example?
Well, there's no solo tour anymore. It's all World Tour. But yes, like D-Mac said. Any created character can be used as a stand-in for a specific instrument. If you want to swap positions, you can make one for each of the four instruments. That way, you don't need to swap places all the time.
To customise them, you have to play as them and earn money, though. I've got like five characters.

So how many of you have ripped the music to your hardrive and traded in the first one? Thats what I plan on doing on friday as I have no money at all.

11-18-2008, 01:04 PM
I still own the first disc. That way, I can always re-rip if I have to.

"Running"

He's pretty much on-point every Tuesday. He often includes commentary if you care enough to read. He does play with crowd tracks low so you wouldn't know if the crowd sings with the songs but otherwise a nice public service.

TRU is having a sale where you buy RB 2 bundle for $110 plus get a $25 gift card.
I would pick it up, but I don't have enough money at the moment. :-\
Shit was just advertised yesterday and they are already sold out of both systems at my local TRU. I called and the dude said they had 1 left and he was nice enough to hold it for me till I got there. That kind of customer service is already 2436457654x better than Wal-Mart's.

Well if you think about it...
$60 for the game itself
and for $50 you get the drums, guitar, and mic...the drums alone cost $80.
Plus the $25 GC which you could use to buy X-Box Live points to buy more songs.

Some stores will Price Match TRU's price as well. While you can't get the 25 dollar gift card (though if you get someone who doesn't know what they are doing you may be able to), you can get the price. Stores like BB and CC match prices only, not promotions like Buy 1 Get 1 Free etc.

Hey everybody,
Next week we will be dropping the Rockin' the Holidays 2008 pack for DLC. This pack will come out on Xbox 360 and PS3 on Tuesday, December 23rd. Come back Friday for more news on next week's DLC.
Barenaked Ladies - "Hanukkah Blessings"
Billy Squier - “Christmas is the Time To Say I Love You”
The Pretenders - “Blue Christmas”
Holiday tracks will be available for $.99 (80 Microsoft Points for Xbox 360) each or for $2.99 (240 Microsoft Points) for the 3-pack.

I got all of TCATS, but I think I'm passing on this for now. I mean, maybe later. I don't remember these songs, but combining the fact that I already have a ton of FF songs with the general chordfest nature of the Foos (I'm fine with that, especially with songs I enjoy anyway, but on and on....), I think I'm good with the FF songs I already have.
I really wish they hadn't released this so close to a full album. What I'm really craving is more variety. Whole albums are awesome (and I own most of them), but at some point, there really is too much all at once.
On the other hand, they've put out so much shit I wanted that I'm having trouble complaining about a couple weeks where I'm not spending money.

Nah, it's just personal preference. Honestly, I grew out of Metallica in high school. I like their older shit, but most of their newish shit, including the black album, hasn't really held up well in my personal opinion. Foo Fighters on the other hand, are not only a consistently good rock band, but there music, IMO, has actually held up better over time.

So last night I made the leap from easy to medium. Got it pretty much nailed, until I ran into Battery. WTF that shit is hard.
What instrument?
Guitar. I just started messing with bass and drums today.

Me and KK got Battery on random when we played on XBL. I honestly couldn't believe we got through it...nothing against our skills whatsoever.
It might have been my second time on hard drums. I can't remember.

Pretty much.
On topic, I have not played this game in months. I need to pop it back in sometime.

I broke my RB2 pedal for the 3rd time playing Battery (that song is touch and go for me sometimes I pass it, sometimes I don't). =/
Still got 6 more songs to pass on expert drums to beat the entire setlist. Everlong, Panic Attack, and Visions rape me so badly. :(
That blue film on the bass pedal is suppose to come off, right?

Are there any other easy ways to get those expert achievements, like with the vocal and bass?
There are no on-disc songs as easy as Silver on Drums, but I think one of the Nrivana songs has like four cymbal crashes or something. I dunno. I only bought "Silver" because it was part of the whole album, so I'm not exactly in the know on drum achievements.
I also don't know of an easy guitar song, either. There are some pretty simple ones in tier one. Do you have "They Say" by Scars on Broadway? That's about as simple as I can think of (out of the songs I own).
On-disc, Paramore's pretty fucking simple. Also happens I like the song. If you don't, it might be tedious.
Where did my post go. :wtf:
I just got the 100% solo on Give It Away. The only problem was actually finishing the song. I cannot get the hang of the fifth fret. :(
Kane Knight
01-08-2009, 02:09 PM
I thought you must have deleted it. :D
I don't remember that solo.
I'm mad frustrated. In GH2, I managed all but the last couple songs on Expert. I gave it up for a couple years, along with REAL guitar, due to a shoulder injury and I'm struggling to beat a couple songs on Hard, and Expert seems brutal beyond three dots.
I'm working on the Charlene song to get the FC in guitar. I know to you guys that song is simple. Hopefully it'll only take 4 hours to nail. :$

Tried for like 20 minutes and gave up. I'm going to try with my wife pressing the orange button or something.
Kane Knight
01-08-2009, 06:08 PM
I find the easiest way to do it isn't to reach up to orange. My hands normally stay with my index on the red fret, and I move down as is necessary. Similar to how I play guitar. It's easier to move with your index to hit a note lower than it is stretch up. For me. I['ve seen a bunch of guitarists who don't do it at all like that.
Anyway, experiment with different methods.

What does "FC" mean? :o
BTW, I just bought it and I just unlocked Ace of Spades. I'm in love with this game
Yes, it's awesome. I have a band with my buddy and his wife, and we just met this other chick the other day and have been playing with a full band. Really fun.
FC means full combo, 100% a song. I had to google it after hearing it over and over.
Kapoutman
01-08-2009, 11:45 PM
Ah I see. I had my first drum "FC" today on "Nine in the Afternoon" then. I pull them off more regularly on guitar though.
I used to play it over at my friend's place and we have a full band there. You're right, it's so much more fun with a full band. One of my friends barely speak English but he will sing anything you throw at him. Often with hilarious results.
I took on my first drumming session last night and was sore as hell this morning. And I was playing on easy. :(
BTW, make sure to get your free 20 songs if you didn't already.

Hey gang,
Here's the DLC for the week of January 13th. We're putting out a sweet Lenny Kravitz 4 Song Pack, including the following songs:
Are You Gonna Go My Way
Freedom Train
Let Love Rule
Mr. Cab Driver
In addition to the Kravitz 4 Pack, we're also putting out two tracks from a pair of fan favorite Harmonix bands.
Megasus - Megasus
Honest Bob and the Factory-to-Dealer Incentives - Entangled
All tracks are masters. The Kravitz tracks will be available for $1.99 (160 Microsoft Points) a piece or $6.99 (560 Microsoft Points for Xbox 360) for the full 4 song pack pack. The HMX tracks will be $0.99 (80 Microsoft Points) a piece.
These tracks will be available on the Xbox Marketplace on January 13th, and they'll be up in the Playstation Store on January 15th. The Playstation Store will also be updating with last week's Roy Orbison 6 Pack as well, and you can check last week's announcement thread here for the track listing and pricing.

Most bands make songs that sound like their other songs.
It's called THEIR SOUND. That's always been a weak argument to me, "all their songs sound the same". Acts that constantly try to reinvent themselves actually annoy me.

See, I'm never sure how to react to this. Are you missing the point, or intentionally misrepresenting the argument? Do you not understand the difference between having a band with a signature sound and a band whose songs sound the same, or are you just splitting hairs for the sake of a gripe? How is it that other bands can have a trademark sound and style without practically copying their prior songs down to structure and effects verbatim, but Godsmack cannot?

It's the one they used for the Scoprion King...
Honestly, I think Godsmack is hella overrated, and I agree with KK, most of their songs do sound identical. Although I do like "I Stand Alone" so I'll probably buy it.
And saying a band's songs all sound alike isn't a weak argument. Look at Nickelback, there shit is cookie cutter. The majority of there cds (minus The State, which is really good) can't be differentiated from each other. Compare that to a band, like, let's say, Avenge Sevelfold, who have a pretty specific sound, but there songs are actually different and unique from each other, despite being the same "style."

What does the hole on the bottom of the RB2 guitar used for?
If you're a righty and holding it like you'd play, the small hole at the "top" of the base of the instrument is for a headset, while the one you're probably talking about (Closer to the trem arm) is for optional peripherals. This isn't the first time we've seen one, but this time, we're actually getting one. Someone, may be Mad Catz, is releasing an Overdrive Pedal in a couple of months, to be plugged into it. We may see other options as well.
Rock Band 2: drum pedal + Strat controller = Overdrive switch (http://arstechnica.com/journals/thumbs.ars/2008/09/18/rock-band-2-drum-pedal-strat-controller-overdrive-switch)

We've been playing more than our fair-share of Rock Band 2 since we've gotten our copy, and one thing we keep noticing is that even moderate to skilled players tend to lose their multipliers when trying to activate Overdrive. You have to raise the guitar neck up and then bring it down, and if you're in the middle of a tricky solo or a fast passage, this is often more than enough to destroy your rhythm. We just found out about an awesome hack though: simply hook up a Rock Band pedal from the drum set to the bottom jack of the new Strat guitar and use that to activate Overdrive.
I first heard about this on our forums (http://episteme.arstechnica.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/39309975/m/822001258831?r=919000654931#919000654931), and of course ran to try it out. No issues. Using an extra pedal to toggle Overdrive has already improved my score in a few songs. A few notes: the cable is pretty short on these pedals, so you may want to get a 1/8" extension cable to give yourself some room. Taping the pedal to the floor to make sure you're not dragging it around may also be a good idea.
You're not locked into a kick pedal either. Any on/off switch with a 1/8" jack should work. I'm sure someone out there will create something that works better than a standard Rock Band 1 or 2 drum pedal, but this is still something fun to play with. As more and more gamers begin to compete in the Battle of the Band competitions, expect to see many more little tricks like this to improve your score.

Nice, I'll have to go check that out.
Wow, that was very awkward. If it wasn't for the coiled cord which made you hover 2 feet over the pedal or it would pop out, it would have been a great idea. I'd just need to buy an extension cable for a few bucks to sit normal.
Not something I'd probably use, since I have no problems with just tilting the guitar up. Great novelty though.

This would be better in RB, when the guitars all sucked. Well, not all, but you know what I mean. A lot of people had tilt sensors that would go off at the drop of a hat or only go off in a hurricane.

Hey gang,
Here's the DLC announcement arriving on the week of 1/27. We're busting out our second Grateful Dead pack, bringing you six more tracks from one of the jammin'est bands around. Seriously groovy stuff. The Grateful Dead Pack 02 will contain the following tracks:
Hell In a Bucket
Don't Ease Me In
Cold Rain & Snow
Doin' That Rag
Fire On the Mountain
Uncle John's Band
All tracks are original master recordings.
These tracks will be available on Xbox 360 in the Xbox Live Marketplace on January 27th, and they will be up on the Playstation 3 in the Playstation Store on Thursday January 29th. We'll have more information on upcoming Wii DLC posted shortly, so keep posted to this thread for more info.
These classic Dead tracks will run $1.99 (aka 160 Microsoft Points) a piece, or $9.99 (aka 800 Microsoft points) for the full Grateful Dead 6 pack.

I know. And of all the bands to have 13 tracks for....
If we're gonna get more of a band, howabout one that appeals to people who have money, rather than shiftless junkies?

What's their biggest hit song? I don't even know.

Oh, i dunno I don't listen to the music. I just enjoyed playing the songs on Rockband.
I would assume either Truckin' or Casey Jones is the biggest hit tho.

Have trouble envisioning it as enjoyable to play, but that's just me. I mean, I do enjoy a lot of songs on RB I wouldn't listen to regularly. So I can certainly see it being true, but....

Admitedly, I've only played them on guitar, but I'm surprised you never heard the buzz about their fun factor when they were first released.

Mostly, I heard a bunch of dead heads fawning over the band.

Right, anyone who doesn't use an official Rock Band mic (I can't find them in stores over here) can anyone reccomend a good one?
They're on EBay, but I'm loathe to order it as I need it by Saturday.
