Which is strange, I figure Harmonix was cool with Brandon Small or something and I expected Dethklok on Rock Band. So much for that.

Kane Knight

Apparently so.

Rhetorical question is rhetorical.

Disturbed – “Meaning of Life”
Disturbed – “The Game”
Disturbed – “Voices”
The Mother Hips – “Third Floor Story”
The Mother Hips – “White Falcon Fuzz” + *
Silversun Pickups – “Panic Switch”
Silversun Pickups – “Sort Of” +
TRUSTcompany – “Downfall” +

(All tracks are original master recordings)

These tracks will be available for purchase as “Disturbed Pack 02” as well as individual tracks on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 system, and as individual tracks only on Wii. Tracks marked with “+” are also available for download in the family-friendly LEGO® Rock Band Music Store. Tracks marked with a “*” will come out in Europe only on March 11.

Price:
$1.99 USD, £.99 UK, €1.49 EU (160 Microsoft Points for Xbox 360) per track
$5.49, £2.49 UK, €3.99 EU (440 Microsoft Points for Xbox 360) for “Disturbed Pack 02”
$2.00 USD (200 Wii Points™) per track

FINALLY a whole pack worth buying. DISTURBED!
I think I want everything off that list but Trust Company. And I'd have to find the song on Youtube or something to know if I actually don't want it.

The Rock Band Network Music Store Goes Live

More than 100 songs available from artists ranging from The Hold Steady to The Shins

More than 4,000 New Authors and Peer Reviewers Registered Since Open Beta Launch in January

CAMBRIDGE, MA and NEW YORK, NY – March 4, 2010 - Harmonix Music Systems and MTV Games, a part of Viacom’s MTV Networks (NYSE: VIA, VIA.B), today announced that the Rock Band Network Music Store opens to the public today, giving Rock Band fans and music lovers a new avenue to discover music and providing musicians and labels the opportunity to produce and promote tracks for the Rock Band platform. The Rock Band Network, announced in July, is a ground-breaking initiative that gives musicians, publishers and record labels the ability to author their original recordings into gameplay files to promote and sell their music as playable Rock Band tracks through the Rock Band Network Music Store (RBN Store).

In addition, it was announced today that T-Mobile has signed on as launch partner of the Rock Band Network to develop an “Artist-of-the-Month” feature beginning in April 2010 to help fans identify and connect with new talent in the Rock Band Network.

“The Rock Band Network Music Store gives artists at any level the opportunity to reach new fans through our deeply engaging interactive platform,” said Paul DeGooyer, senior vice president of Electronic Games and Music for MTV Networks Music Group. “This new pathway for discovery is a huge win for passionate music fans, as well as an opportunity for artists to promote themselves while positively impacting their bottom line.”

Artists who submit songs for the Rock Band Network Music Store are able to choose from multiple pricing tiers for individual tracks and receive a royalty of 30 percent of the retail selling price (excluding tax) for every track purchased through the RBN Store. There are currently more than 100 songs available for purchase in the Rock Band Network Music Store from artists including The Shins, The Hold Steady, The Main Drag, Bang Camaro, of Montreal, Jonathan Coulton, Skeleton Witch, 3 Inches of Blood, Lacuna Coil, Stroke 9, and Steve Vai. For the full day one track listing check the below post. There are more than 300 artists in the RBN pipeline, with additional tracks already on the way from Flight of the Conchords, The Smashing Pumpkins, Twin Atlantic, All That Remains, Clutch, Prong, The Gaslight Anthem and many more coming soon.

With more than 1,100 tracks available to date in the original Rock Band platform, the Rock Band Network Music Store will immediately boost the number of available songs, further securing MTV Games and Harmonix’s position as the leading provider of downloadable content for music-based video games.

“The response to and interest in the Rock Band Network has been even greater than we originally expected,” said Alex Rigopulos, CEO and co-founder of Harmonix Music Systems. “We’re very excited about the number of bands and labels who have geared up to participate in the Rock Band Network, as well as the number of enthusiasts who have signed up to participate in the Peer Review and Playtest processes.”

Since launching the Rock Band Network open beta in January, more than 4,300 new users have registered as authors and peer reviewers on http://Creators.RockBand.com, the site where songs are submitted before they are approved to be sold. Authors create Rock Band song packages and submit them to the site to go through two processes: Playtest, where the community delivers feedback on a work in progress track, and Peer Review, where revised and final drafts are vetted and approved for sale. During Peer Review, songs are tested for playability, adherence to the authoring standards of Rock Band and checked to check for violations of XNA Creators Club Online community standards (vulgarity, adult content, original content, etc.).

Peer reviewers have the unique opportunity to play Rock Band Network content for free, well in advance of a track’s commercial release. These fans can help shape the track’s final versions, providing crucial feedback and flagging issues throughout Playtest and Peer Review that ensures songs are up to the high standards set by Harmonix. Any music fan with Rock Band 2 for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and an internet connected PC can join the Playtest and Peer Review processes by purchasing an XNA Creators Club Online Premium membership through http://creators.xna.com/membership.

Once tracks are approved, they are transferred to the Rock Band Network Music Store, an in-game music marketplace where the millions of Rock Band fans will be able to explore this constantly growing set of new content. In an exciting turn of events, for the first time in the Rock Band franchise, users will be able to download sample gameplay of each track to try before they buy! Songs will debut exclusively on Xbox 360 for 30 days. A selection of standout tracks will then be made available on the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system from Sony Computer Entertainment America and the Wii™ home videogame console from Nintendo.

Don't even lie! You're just as excited as any club kid that boundary-pushing pop sensation Lady Gaga is coming to Rock Band next week. So, in the privacy of your living room, break out the tight-fitting pleather and get your jam on (to the tracks you, publicly, tell everyone you hate).

Of course, you could pretend you "accidentally" bought the Gaga Track Pack, when you actually meant to purchase South Park chubby charmer Eric Cartman's rendition of "Poker Face." Yup, that lil' ditty will also be available. See, now you can cover up that undeniable desire to go goo-goo for Gaga with a veil of irony!

Check out the full release list after the break.

Most of the new songs you have to buy on your pc for a day at least until they get posted on the RB2 RBN store. So if you can't find a song in the in game store, you can get it online through microsoft.

When I first got Rock Band 2, I couldn't fathom myself ever beating a song like Visions on Expert Drums. Anyways, tonight after 4 or so hours of playing, I decided to try playing Visions for the first time in months. I had breakneck speed on, and so I wasn't too optimistic about beating it.

I missed a lot of the notes in the beginning, but something dawned on me. I could actually make out a lot of the "patterns" in the song. Granted, I missed a good chunk, but only once did I find myself in the red throughout the whole song. And so without even practicing on the song earlier in the day, I actually beat a song I struggled with since the release of the game.

Now the only song left on the Rock Band 2 setlist that I need to beat is Panic Attack. >_> And once that's fallen, Endless Setlist 2, here I come!

That strange 'revelation' is something other players have spoke about before. Out of nowhere you're hitting notes and patterns like a player possessed. It's something I wanted to look into further but haven't the data for any significant observation.

I think it has a lot to do with memory in regard to music timing and muscle movement. I've only briefly studied memory during my basic psychology course but I'm sure there's something there.

Interesting note about this weeks track release from Kotaku

This week's new batch of downloadable tracks for Rock Band all have one thing in common. Did you catch it? The post-Easter releases from bands like Anberlin, Hawk Nelson and Skillet all fall under the "Christian rock" label.

That's a fact that wasn't overtly publicized by MTV Games and Harmonix, who simply referred to the groups as "alternative rock" acts in the official announcement that went out last week. The official Rock Band 'Zine was slightly more descriptive, calling the half-dozen new songs "from artists ranging from inspirational alternative rock to positive alternative pop."

The 'Zine writers later joked "It's like the clouds parted and a ray of sunshine shone upon the office of Harmonix... and then these songs appeared, fully authored."

Given that this is Religion Week on Kotaku, it struck us as more than a little curious that MTV seemed to be so... sneaky with its announcement, one that was recognized as a full Christian line-up by fans of the bands, but got little publicity otherwise.

And we're not the only ones. "Rapture Ready!" author Daniel Radosh writes on the site Beliefnet that the makers of Rock Band are "obviously hoping to attract the interest of the Christian marketplace, so why not throw the word Christian into the announcement as one selling point among others?"

"It's almost like they're trying to sneak that fact past non-Christian audiences who might automatically dismiss Christian rock without listening to it," Radosh theorizes "or even think that having Christian rock in the game makes the entire platform less cool by association."

MTV declined Kotaku's requests to be interviewed about the newest additions to the Rock Band library, only confirming "there already have been other Christian acts that have appeared as part of the Rock Band catalog in the past."

Rock Band makers may simply be exploring the viability of appealing to the Rock Band fan with a thirst for music with a message, appealing to the more family friendly and E-rated LEGO Rock Band crowd, which exhibits stronger restrictions on the content that can be downloaded and played. But would MTV Games go as far as making their own version of Christian music game Guitar Praise? Themed track packs we can see, but maybe not a full-fledged game.

What do you think? Do you find the video game audience too easily dismissive of content aimed at the Christian or otherwise devoutly religious gamer? For the Christians in the crowd, would you prefer more downloadable content in your Rock Band that features these types of bands? Let us know in the comments.

Aside from, evidently, a DDR game, a Singstar title and some miscellanea?

And artists signed specifically to their labels?

Now, maybe you meant to include a few disclaimers there. Like "third party" and "Guitar Games" and "specifically Disney stuff," though you'd have trouble phrasing that last one to include the MMPR title track without also including third party acts. Still, I have to say, with at least two Disney games and several acts signed to Disney labels on games...

It has. Nobody said it was the Cheetah Girls. You're making shit up because you know how stupid you're being, Kal. Whether or not the Power Rangers theme would work in Singstar still isn't the point, because you're still operating under that whole assumption that they would plan a release elsewhere, which was neither the point argued nor the point you forced.

But hey, it's easier to make shit up than to actually make a grounded argument.

It's adorable when you call someone else dense, Kal.

Hey gang,

Here's the DLC coming at you next week! Well, here we are, 115 weeks of DLC later, with a third pack from The Dead (bringing their total count up to 18 tracks) along with 2 singles from RB newcomers The Smithereens. Enjoy!

Available on Xbox 360, Wii and PlayStation 3 system (May 18):

Grateful Dead – “Beat It on Down the Line” +
Grateful Dead – “Cumberland Blues” +
Grateful Dead – “Scarlet Begonias” +
Grateful Dead – “Throwing Stones”
Grateful Dead – “Touch of Grey” +
Grateful Dead – “U.S. Blues” +
The Smithereens – “A Girl Like You”
The Smithereens – “Only a Memory” +

(All tracks are original master recordings)

"At E3, you'll see that Harmonix has spent two years on an engine upgrade and creating the next evolution of Rock Band," says MTV Games boss Scott Guthrie. "Unlike the other guy, we haven't been bringing a new game out every year. Sure, last year we had The Beatles but that was more about the content. This time we have lots of great, new music and some new consumer features you will find interesting."

I'm intrigued, but not excited. There's only so much you can do in a rhythm game unless they want us to buy new instruments again (which isn't happening).

Having said that though, if anyone can find a way to improve it, it's Harmonix. No disrespect to Neversoft, but they just get told to churn out the same game over and over.
