Rock Band 2 has been confirmed as in development for release in late 2008 by Wired. According to Wired, Harmonix is working on improving the instrument controllers but the current controllers will be forward compatible with Rock Band 2. Wired also stated that the game will likely include similar features announced for Guitar Hero World Tour, set also for release in late 2008.

List things this game needs.
1) Solo BASS tour
2) The ability to pick your cpu controlled bandmates.
3) The ability to create your own setlist on solo tour, solo quickplay, and band quickplay. Where you could play as many songs in a row you want. And pick the venues.

1) Hell Yes.
2) Yeah. Maybe even pick them from the same profile.
3) Agreed.
Let me add:
4) The ability to use characters on the same profile to do BWT, period. I don't want to do a second profile if I want to sing and play guitar. In fact, just give us the option to have a frontman with a riddem geetar. In fact, let us use the guitar or drum's headset to sing.
5) BWT online. This would up the online portions by like 9 million percent.
6) More CAR features. More detail i ncreation. I don't need SVR-level depth, but it'd be nice if we had a bit more detail in the creation process. Maybe even options for how our characters behave at different points (Such as overdrive).
7) Like I said, import music from RB. They wanted to make it like iTunes, well iTunes doesn't make you rebuy songs when you get a new iPod.
8) Recognise local DLC. Like, with the local showcases? I have tons of songs from the Boston area, but it only counts the three that were part of the original setlist. Minor deal, but still.

Awesome news, Rock Band DLC will be playable on Rock Band 2:
MTV, EA reunite on Rock Band 2
Publishers getting the band back together exclusively for the Xbox 360 in September; arrives on other platforms later in the year.
By Brendan Sinclair, GameSpot
Posted Jun 30, 2008 9:34 am PT
There's nothing quite so rock and roll as a reunion tour, a fact underlined by today's announcement of Rock Band 2, which will see MTV Games and Harmonix once again team up with Electronic Arts to put toy instruments and games on shelves across the nation.
However, unlike last year's series debut, Rock Band 2 will be very selective about which shelves it appears on. The game will debut on the Xbox 360 in September, and after a North American "exclusive launch window," it will find its way to additional unspecified platforms by year's end.
With this year's installment of Activision's rival rocker Guitar Hero going head-to-head with the full four-piece band concept, Rock Band 2 is making a few upgrades of its own. First and foremost among the details revealed today is that the sequel will be backward compatible with the original Rock Band's downloadable content, with no need to repurchase or redownload it to the system. That makes for a sizeable potential Rock Band 2 library right off the bat, given that the Rock Band music store currently has more than 200 songs available, which have garnered some 15 million paid downloads since the game launched in November.
Furthermore, Harmonix will be offering "new and improved" drum and guitar controllers with new features and designs, "all fully compatible with original Rock Band instruments." The game's tracklist will consist entirely of master recordings, and Harmonix is also promising new online modes with a greater emphasis on the Rock Band community's social aspects.
More details about Rock Band 2 will be made public at this year's E3 Media & Business Summit.

So apparently X Play showed some of the Rock Band 2 song selection screen tonight. Besides seeing Rock Band 1 DLC on it, there were some new songs (the artists are all presumed, since only the song titles were shown):
* Dream Theater - “Panic Attack” (could also be Finger Eleven)
* System of a Down - “Chop Suey”
* Red Hot Chili Peppers - “Give It Away”
* Foo Fighters - “Everlong”
* Kim Wilde - “Kids in America”
* Motörhead - “Ace of Spades”
* Cheap Trick - “Hello There”
* Journey - “Any Way You Want It”
* The Who - “Pinball Wizard”

Not really? Yeah, the whole timed exclusive thing sucks, but a 3 month wait isn't the end of the world.
360 has a September release with a PS3 release later in the year. It's highly unlikely that it will be a 3 month wait. I'd say the beginning of November is the absolute LATEST, because they're going to want to get it out for the Holiday rush.
Note this isn't a timed exclusive, it's merely coming out sooner for one than the others. The difference may seem trivial, but if it were really a timed exclusive, they wouldn't be hyping it up for other systems, as that would be counterproductive.
So yeah, PS3 owners have to wait a little, but they're hardly screwed. Not that I really care, since I'll have mine at launch on the 360. But it's not going to be that big a deal.

Questionable song lyrics are pretty ridiculous anyway. For the Pixies Doolittle, they don't censor "Whores at the door, whore in my bed" by the censor "got a tattooed tit". I'm sure they could make it a T rating somehow.

From Gamespost:
With hundreds of songs available to you from the get-go, the ability to create setlists for quick-play sessions is a crucial addition in Rock Band 2. In the last game, you could pick songs only one at a time; with the sequel, you'll be able to create setlists exactly how you see fit. It's perfect for the Rock Band fan who insists that every third song be a Rush tune, or that repeating Freezepop's "Sprode" 13 times in succession isn't just a good idea, it's a great idea.

I want the crowd to sing to DLC tracks as well. There's a section in "Scene... Arms Race" that begged for crowd interaction and there was none. Also the crowd track should be a few points louder, I could barely hear them in the multiple sections of "Welcome Home".

Nigger, buy a 360. You're getting you money's worth on the games in the XBox Live Marketplace alone. So many awesome games for like $10 or less in there. Also, you can play a lot of original XBox games like Fable and Jade Empire (both pretty kickass) thanks to backward compatibility. Also, Lost Odyssey = ratings. Actually, that is a lie because despite how awesome LO is, the version that they sent out for review was all unfinished and all the reviewers were like "meh" and/or :-\.

Gouge Away is also DLC, from the Pixies album "Doolittle."
Now, as I understand it, if a song was edited (Like for Radio, or the Wal-Mart release) they use the edited version, but don't if it wasn't edited (Like say, with whore in the Nirvana track vs in the C&C track...). Where it gets funky is I don't remember there being edited versions of any of the Pixies tracks, even on the radio.

The rumoured tracklists are so full of shit I want that once again, I find myself not caring about garbage like Blink being on it, or even minding Chop Suey (Again, like the song, hate the idea of PLAYING it). And there's actually a bunch of stuff I'm probably going to end up liking, though I don't know it.

I imagine you're right. When I used Frets on Fire (the free PC Guitar Hero clone), I was really looking forward to authoring a song or two...but the tools were so awkward I didn't try more than five minutes.

Frets on Fire doesn't have the most user-friendly interface, but there are still tons of really well made songs. It just takes time to learn it.

Does it include a limited sound bank? Because this is going to be one of the crippling elements to the music editor in GHWT. It won't be a user interface issue, especially since I'm sure the GHWT one will be pretty simple.

Along with the drums reveal, about seven or so more songs were revealed. All from that leaked list, so it appears to be the real deal. I am too lazy to post which songs but it is all over gamefaqs. Go look there if you are that interested.

I actually preordered those drums.
I feel kinda stupid for it, but fuck. How often do I get a game controller and a new drum set all at once?
Granted, you need a drum machine to turn it into a controller, but I can purchase one later. At least this is adjustable and shit. Anyone else here over 6' and tried fucking adjusting the Rock Band set? At their highest, I can't get my knees under them easily, so I have to hold my arms out like a fucking B-movie zombie.

It would be nice if they did a program where you can send them your old RB drumset and they send you a coupon for like $30 off the new drumset or something of that nature.
It would probably get people like me who probably won't go out a buy the new drums since I've got the current one.

That'd be awesome. Though my current plan is to sell my drum kit to a friend. He's getting a 360 soon, now that he's gotten hooked on Rock Band, and so I plan on helping him save a few bucks at first. He only needs one guitar, because I'm the only person who he plays guitar with, his wife drums, and neither of them can sing. So they can get buy with a single guitar and drum set initially. No way will they buy a bundle anyway. Since my drum kit is ridiculously functional now (Two of the pads were unresponsive, then they seemed to work themselves out), I think it'll work.

Holy Crap:
http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/888/888781p1.html
July 14, 2008 - Last year, Rock Band was the only music game that enabled users to play as a full-fledged band. Things are different this year with Konami's Rock Revolution and, more dauntingly, Guitar Hero World Tour. Ultimately, no amount of features or new equipment is going to matter. The real winner will be whichever game has the best track list. Harmonix and MTV must be fully aware of this fact, because today, the two released the full 84-song set list. Judging by the impressive list, Konami and Activision have reason to worry. This is easily the greatest assemblage of music in a game to date.
The big jaw-to-the-floor announcement is that Guns N' Roses is set to debut a new song from the long-awaited album Chinese Democracy. It's not just that Rock Band 2 has GNR -- it has new GNR and effectively announces the imminent arrival of the band's oft-delayed album. Guns N' Roses' "Shackler's Revenge" is just the tip of the iceberg for a track list that features far more greats (Bob effin' Dylan!) than stinkers (Linkin effin' Park?!).
Joining GNR and Dylan are such surprises as Tenacious D, Pearl Jam, Beck, Talking Heads, and The Replacements. The list isn't so focused on spreading across decades as it is spanning genres. There's a lot more heavy metal this time around and the music from the '60s is better focused (and lacking the horror that is Green Tides and High Grass). Perhaps the only head scratcher is the inclusion of Norman Greenbaum's "Spirit in the Sky," which most will recognize as an overused sports anthem.
Ah, but as great as this list may be, you love your old RB1 tracks and just don't want to give them up. Fear not. All downloadable content will work with Rock Band 2 and gamers can export tracks from Rock Band 1 to RB2. That's right -- from day one you can bring all RB1 tracks into RB2 to compliment your DLC as long as you own a PS3 or an Xbox 360 with a hard drive.
And there's more. Harmonix actually wanted to toss in 100 tracks total for the disk, but couldn't get them all in one time to ship for Xbox 360 by September. So this fall, MTV is releasing an additional 20 downloadable master tracks... for free. By year's end this will mean RB fans will have access to more than 500 songs.
That is the sound of Activision gulping.
Check out the full list of tracks. Note that all tracks on RB2 are master recordings. There are 75 tracks from famous artists, plus nine bonus tracks from various bands that feature members of Harmonix.
*edit* And... the confirmed set list!

Kinda hoping the prefab characters aren't as random in quickplay this time. Would be cool if use could use custom characters for each non-player band member in quickplay, but I'd just be happy with being able to pick which genre your bandmates are dressed to represent.
Is kinda stupid having a metrosexual singer, gwar-like metal guitarist, power hair metal bassist, and hippy drummer.

Yeah, it's horrible. Especially since I almost always get Quill Boy singing. Him or the sideburns dude. Looks retarded. Also, the drummer is often that tanned girl with the bouffant. Let us pick our own prefabs. Or even let us use other characters on our profile...Though not needing to stick to one instrument anymore, it diminishes the need for extra characters unless you want them....

K, so ever since Rockband came out, I havn't touched Frets on Fire. Because FoF plays like a cheap version of GH, and Gh plays like a cheap version of Rock Band.
But all this rythem game hype has me really excited about the genre. So I decided to check out whats been going on in the FoF world.
And holy shit, there is a mod which has overhauled the game, and made it about 100 times better. It is called the alarian mod, and in addition to giving several visual options(gh1, gh2, gh3, rb) The gameplay is just way tighter and smoother. It doesn't feel as good as rockband, but I'm enjoying it more than GH III.
Take a look.
(Note: Guy in the video has the board speed set high. That is adjustable, along with a number of hit window and HO/PO options.)

Looks nice. I just downloaded FoF a few days ago and once I got my guitar controller working the first thing I did was upload my music to set some charts.
It was... frustrating.
After a failed To Be Loved and Holy Diver, Motorhead's King of Kings came out pretty good, though still rough.
I'll probably forget I have the program once the onslaught of music games comes around.
Still, where can I get that mod?

It's actually a standalone mod, with its own executable file. Just extract it from the zip file and your good to go. Only thing you need to do is upon the first time you start it up, it will ask you to locate the folder with all your songs on it. Which if it's in your original FoF directory, I'd move it, since after playing this, you will likely get rid of the original.
Depending on the computer, you may need to make adjustments to visual and audio options so it runs better. Nothing too complicated tho. Keep the readme doc in the original fof directory if you run into trouble. Its got some hints on how to make it run smoother.

The word "shit" remains uncensored in Buddy Holly, although that is DLC..
Actually, the line you're thinking of that would have that in there is
"Your tongue is twisted, your eyes are slit"
It sounds so much like he IS saying shit in that line (was looking this up on letssingit.com, and according to that, it's never uttered)
They did change some of the lyrics on "Creep" and "Welcome Home" too. That's something else they will do (as long as the changes aren't that retarded).

Not enough for you? How about a Jukebox mode that allows you to listen to songs without having to play any instruments? Yes, you can now pick a song and kick back with a refreshing drink. Listen to your favorite song and watch your band play without your input. Jukebox mode shows off the refinements in presentation often lost when you're focused on playing an instrument. The camera cuts are smarter, the angles better, and the animations more varied.

Wow...only three songs got the ax from the original RB1 disc?
And neither of them are ones I were hoping would make the cut onto RB2 (I can still do Soundgarden and Foo Fighters). Not that I didn't want to use the RB2 features to play those tracks, but the ones I really wanted to play are still going to be there.
The Maiden and Black Sabbath songs could still be mastered (they're doing something with the Rush DLC that they had to do a cover version for because they snagged the rights to brign 2012 to Rock Band), so they could've just gotten that for master DLC (which could be awesome). It's Enter Sandman I'm not sure why they couldn't get the rights to (wasn't Metallica supposed to debut something on Rock Band or something?).
Like GH: Aerosmith, the GH: Metallica game may make Metallica exclusive to the GH series (which could be the real reason behind that).

of course, Train Kept A Rollin' is still in the game, and they're the ones who already have a GH:X release.
I'd also point out that a master of Paranoid is extremely unlikely unless they go the live route, because of technical limitations.
Finally, of the songs to get the ax, Tom Sawyer wasn't one of them. With confirmation of Moving Pictures as DLC, one must ask why they would keep a Tom Sawyer cover on the list with the original coming out if others might get the DLC treatment?
More likely, an agreement COULD NOT be reached.
However, I'm hoping for the return of RTTH and Paranoid (Hell, use the Stone Coyotes cover) in some format in the future.

Not sure. I read somewhere Aerosmith was GH exclusive, but I don't know if it applied to ALL songs, or songs that would have made available for the game or something. It was just a story I saw pop up on N4G, so take it for what it is worth.

For some reason, they're keeping the covers of Limelight and Working Man up on the DLC stores, too (though that might be different than having the naitive song on the disc or something. They were calling the master versions "Vault Edition" or something like that).
More likely, an agreement COULD NOT be reached.
Think so, too. They better have a damn good reason as to what happened to cause such actions to happen.
However, I'm hoping for the return of RTTH and Paranoid (Hell, use the Stone Coyotes cover) in some format in the future.

They both are, both for the same reasons, so it's logical that if one was gone the other would be.

Working Man is an alternate edition with an alternate solo, hence the phrase "Vault Edition." They'll keep the DLC content up just because, but transferring Tom Sawyer doesn't make sense in the context you mentioned.
Think so, too. They better have a damn good reason as to what happened to cause such actions to happen.
Ozzy's gone Guitar Hero (Though it's not official that he's exclusive or anything), so that may explain that. Hope not, because I'd love some more Sabbath.

Ahh...see, I haven't gotten or heard either one yet, so I wasn't sure what was so different other than it being a master track (probably should've said that before. I blame laziness). Like you said to, they might be keeping the Tom Sawyer cover just because they can (or something. I'm not making much sense about it, either, but it's not hurting anyone, so I don't think anyone will really complain).
Ozzy's gone Guitar Hero (Though it's not official that he's exclusive or anything), so that may explain that. Hope not, because I'd love some more Sabbath.Ozzy is GH now? I think I missed the news of that somewhere (don't get me wrong, I believe you, just not aware about that). my band is looking for a bass player. Since you are black (and therefore a great bass player), would you care to join?

Anyone else wondering what the hell happened to that Jukebox mode that was talked about (and shown in EGM)?
Probably gotta unlock it.

I am likely going to sound like an asshat here, but I am thinking about buying a PS3 again, only this time a 60-80GB model, and possibly Rock Band.

There's a lot of talk it was yanked.
People are saying the page on Rock Band's site talking about it was pulled, but since I never saw said page, I couldn't tell you. For all I know, it didn't exist.
My copy should be here in 30 minutes or less. I'm so excited, my nipples could cut glass....:shifty:

Do you have a 360? Because seriously, Bluetooth sucks for a large number of wireless devices. That aside, 95% of TPWW plays it on the 360...Join us or die!
Not really DIE. Now that there are more online integrated features, I wanna play with more people. Even if you're into Queercore music like Metallica....

I should probably, hopefully have my Gamefly copy tomorrow. Probably won't buy it for the foreseeable future as I have no one to play it with now that I'm a bachelor. :-\

I almost sent you an invite earlier.
Anyone who's interested in playing tonight, I'm probably gonna be on a fair share. Just hit up my gamertag (ZacharyAmaranth) and whatnot. I can do anything but drums most of the time, and drums some of the time. Just I haven't built up my bum shoulder to handle drums yet.

By the way, I thought you were able to disable DLC in random play?
I looked and looked, but couldn't find an option.

Brett Gurewitz sent out a Twitter this morning confirming Bad Religion's "Sorrow" as one of the 20 bonus songs.

Another question...
I know you can now do custom setlists on Quickplay, but you don't earn cash from that, right? Any way to play setlists AND make money at the same time? I mean, if you find one that's the right length in tour mode, that's great, but otherwise....

Enter and win a free Rock Band DLC song. They are giving away 1,000 each day. If you select X-Box, they will just send you a code for 160, so technically you can use it on something else on the Marketplace if you choose to.

Well someone saw it on an MTV Update thing. All it said that there will be a 12 song Beatles pack coming sometime.

I don't see why that is so sketchy. I mean there have been rumblings about the Beatles and either GH or RB. With GH snatching up the rights to Metallica, this would be the logical step to counter for Rock Band.

It's sketchy because they can't even get The Beatles' music for iTunes, let alone a videogame.

I dont have a 360, and I dont want both systems, but I want to finish GTA4 as bad as that sounds, and beat MGS4. There are no other platform exclusive games, so perhaps I will get a 360, only thing is, I dont want to get the RRoD

Also, what did Bluetooth have to do with me getting a PS3 exactly (I know the PS3 is bluetooth capable) I am just wondering why you pointed it out.

World Tour is awesome. Maximum replayability there.
Battle of the Bands is pretty cool, new challenges almost every day. This game will keep you busy well into next year and Rock Band 3.
Oh, and Green Grass and High Tides has pissed me off for the last time. It's gone.

Apologies in advance for three or four posts. Multiquote isn't working on my browser/computer ATM.
It's sketchy because "someone saw it on MTV." If it were legit, there'd be news of it everywhere. Also, the reasoning that "it's not sketchy, because this is a logical counter to Metallica" is simply wrong.

Getting the Beatles on iTunes, which likely has nothing to do with the decade the Beatles and Apple spent suing each other.
Nah. It's easier to get the Beatles for a video game. Look at how often you see Beatles music on TV, hear it on the radio, and see it on movie. The owners of the rights are cash whores.
The only problem I can see with the Beatles on Rock Band/GH, aside from the fact that the ONLY thing that indicates they'll be on is rumour and wishful thinking, is that they would have to give up the masters. This one is tricky. Do yo know what they had to go through to get a chance to remaster the Beatles for Compact Disc?
It's sketchy because of the nature of the information, not because of iTunes.

Shit. I forgot. The wireless controllers for the PS3 don't use Bluetooth, do they? They have a special dongle (giggle....) to work, don't they?
I retract that statement.

So I just got this in the mail today via Gamefly. I'll probably keep it for a couple of days before I send it back so I can receive Lego Batman. If anyone wants to play with someone who sucks at this, hit me up and we'll jam.
My strongest area is the drums, I can play bass or guitar if need be.

If anyone has yet to get rid of Rock Band 1 who is planning to, Blockbuster/GameRush's Trade in Value for it is $32 or so.
So with that you can use the credit towards the Wireless Guitar, Drum Set, hell even get some X-Box Live point cards to use for the DLC.

Downloaded the Peace Sells album. Too scared to try it tho. Fucking cannot get past Chop Suey. Can't get the rythem down for the alt strum where it goes chord/single/chord/single etc. Gonna have to bump down to hard, which sucks, cause the rest of the songs in the challenge are gonna be boring. But I gotta unlock everything.
Also, the tiers are once again fucked up in places. There are songs that should be higher , and songs that should be lower.
Overall, this game is fairly large step up in difficulty. Not in a bad, GH III way tho.

You playing on expert? I'm on hard in World Tour. I'm afraid that once I get to the hard songs, it will say I need to step up the difficulty. I can play easier songs on expert, but the hard ones I have trouble.

http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/16/harmonix-no-immediate-plans-to-put-jukebox-mode-back-into-roc/
We were admittedly pretty bummed when our copy of Rock Band 2 was lacking a Jukebox mode, which would let our game go on autopilot while our virtual avatars rock out and we have some jamming party tunes and some fun visuals. The official word from Harmonix via a forum post is that the mode "was removed ... in the final stages of development. We have no immediate plans to bring this feature back to the platform in the future." The posting also reaffirmed that the 20 free DLC songs are still coming later this fall.
