Speaking at Gamescom 2009 today, Harmonix CEO Alex Rigopulos flaunted his franchise's massive library of music, citing it as just one of the reasons for Rock Band's domination over the competition, along with weekly downloadable content and artist offerings, innovation, and superior gameplay. Rigopulos also revealed that tracks from Queen, Nirvana, Tom Petty, Elton John, Iggy Pop, The White Stripes, Pantera, Talking Heads, Korn, The Raconteurs, and more would soon be bringing said library into the quadruple digits.

I stumbled across an interview online and while I won't
post the whole thing, I did find one part interesting.

So for those tent pole releases, what happens after The Beatles game – what’s coming in 2010? Another major artist game? Or Rock Band 3?

"We’re exploring both – and possibly will do both. The Harmonix development team are working on what is effectively the next game, or ‘Rock Band 3’. We aren’t standing still – we will keep moving into new areas and look at new technologies that our platform holder partners are also developing, such as Project Natal from Microsoft. We’re working with them to pull some things together. So it’s pretty exciting time for the future of our music game business."

Most people would assume that there will be a Rock Band 3, but
it mentions there may be another major artist game.

Hey all,

Awesome week a' comin'. Especially if you are as big a fan of the Talking Heads as me (I own every release they ever put out in just about every region on vinyl... just a little obsessed). In addition we're kicking some new flavor in your ear holes with Avenged Sevenfold, The Jam, Oasis, and Rage Against the Machine. The Wii is getting Tom Petty, Judas priest and more in a epic week as well. And we have not forgotten the PSP - Guns 'N Roses and Franz Ferdinand. Believe it.

Tracks available on Xbox 360 (Sept. 1) and PLAYSTATION 3 system (Sept. 3):
• Avenged Sevenfold – “Bat Country”
• The Jam – “A Town Called Malice”
• The Jam – “Going Underground”
• Oasis – “Supersonic” (Live)
• Rage Against the Machine – “Guerilla Radio”
• Talking Heads – “And She Was”
• Talking Heads – “Crosseyed & Painless”
• Talking Heads – “Girlfriend is Better”
• Talking Heads – “Once in a Lifetime”
• Talking Heads – “Take Me to the River”

(All tracks are original master recordings)

These tracks will be available for purchase as Talking Heads Pack 01 and as individual tracks on Xbox 360 and PLAYSTATION 3 system.

Tracks will be priced at $1, $2, or $3, whatever the creator feels is most appropriate. Since many of the tracks coming to RBN will be from less well known bands, all tracks will have a free demo version. The demo will be 35 percent of the song or up to one minute, whichever is shorter. After the demo, players will be asked whether or not they want to buy the full song. Unfortunately, Harmonix has no plays to add this feature to the Rock Band Store.

The shitty thing is I'm not too enthused about either Jam song. I like "Going Underground," But it's been lost on me since Buffalo Tom's cover for the Jam tribute record. Odd since I was listening to Beat Surrender last night.

The TH pack is almost certainly a buy for me. Gay7X and Rage can go fuck themselves, but I'll certainly not gripe about the rest.

To be fair, D Mac's never heard of anything not inspired by Fagtastica. Also, people who know Paul don't necessarily know him for the Jam, regardless.

Don't feel like hunting down the Lego Rockband thread, but the songs in Lego Rockband WILL be exportable into Rockband 1/2

Also, Besides the 2 Queen songs in lego rockband (We are the Champions and We Will Rock You), there is expected to be 10 more Queen songs downloadable within the next month.

Some of those seem like bad choices for a music rhythm game, but I'll probably snag the whole pack.

Fucking hate big rock endings. Would much rather play those sections than mash buttons. You can still have it be a special section. When it starts have like a bar appear, and you have to fill the bar by hitting notes, to nail the big rock ending. That would be way better, imo.

Unless I'm doing something where I need the points, I don't bother with them. I would use the solo buttons on my RB2 guitar, so I don't break anything I actually play with.

GOOD MORNING!

In celebration of our good friends at Double Fine putting out Brütal Legend on Rocktober 13th we have a 3 pack of tracks from their soundtrack - Motörhead, Tenacious D, and Testament. If you'd like to hear more about the music in Brütal Legend we have a sweet interview with creator Tim Schafer on our brand spanking new bi-weekly podcast which you can find here on our podcast page (there's also an interview with Claudio from Coheed and Cambria!)

“These are three great songs that totally capture the feeling of Brütal Legend. I can’t wait to play them in Rock Band,” said Tim Schafer, founder of Double Fine Productions. “I’ve air-drummed to all of them so many times, I’m sure I’ll be able to beat them on hard mode, no problem. Or at least on medium. Like medium plus. That’s a setting, right?”

But the fun doesn't stop there Because we also have tracks from Black Tide, Blink-182, Joe Satriani, Kansas, and L7. We also have a track from Pearl Jam and one from Foreigner hitting Rock Band: Unplugged.

HAPPY ROCKTOBER!

All the block-rockin' beats in Lego Rock Band (http://joystiq.com/tag/lego-rock-band) have been revealed, with Warner Bros. also confirming upcoming DLC and a song exporting feature (http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/04/rock-band-disc-export-goes-live-costs-5-for-55-tracks/). Xbox 360 and PS3 owners will have the option to download "all of the songs in the Rock Band Music Store (http://joystiq.com/tag/rock-band-weekly) that have been identified to be suitable for all ages." Only songs deemed appropriate will appear within the Lego Rock Band Store and the game should "highlight" any newly added "family-friendly" tracks.

The Lego Rock Band disc export will cost $9.99 (800http://www.blogcdn.com/www.xbox360fanboy.com/media/2007/11/microsoftpointslogosmall.gif) and transfer all tracks from the Lego disc for use on the regular Rock Band platform. It appears to work in the same way as the conversion of the original Rock Band disc (http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/04/video-rock-band-export-feature-in-action/), except that owners will have to enter "a unique code from an insert in their game manual into a dedicated website" to activate the option. Check out the full set list for the console and DS versions of Lego Rock Band after the break.

IGN:

October 13, 2009 - How might developer Harmonix follow up the release of The Beatles: Rock Band? We might just have our answer.

Queen guitarist Brian May told the BBC there was talk "going on behind the scenes" about a Queen-themed 'Rock Band' game similar to The Beatles title released earlier this year.

"Yes we're into it, I think it may happen," he added.

May also expressed his enthusiasm for being included in the upcoming LEGO Rock Band videogame, set for release next month.

"It's the ultimate accolade, to be portrayed in LEGO," May told the BBC. "My dreams are all fulfilled now."

A fully dedicated Queen Rock Band game could be a big seller. However, a packaged SKU with instruments would not be. Harmonix did, however, announce a 10-song Queen track pack, which shows the developer has a strong interest in the band.

IGN:

November 7, 2009 - Don't expect the next Rock Band to be a rehashed title with an updated set list. It appears Harmonix is hard at work on reinventing the music game genre.

Dhani Harrison, son of Beatles legend George Harrison and developer on The Beatles: Rock Band, told the Chicago Tribune new details on the still unannounced Rock Band 3 project.

Harrison, who still works with developer Harmonix, said he's creating new musical controllers that will actually teach players the fundamentals of playing real-life instruments for the next Rock Band title.

"I'm working on 'Rock Band 3' and making the controllers more real so people can actually learn how to play music while playing the game," he said.

Harrison would add, however, gamers might not see the next proper Rock Band installment for quite some time.

"Give me a couple years, it's going to happen."

MTV Games general manager Scott Guthrie hinted at big changes for the series in a recent interview, saying the next Rock Band title could even incorporate Project Natal motion technology.

"We aren't standing still – we will keep moving into new areas and look at new technologies that our platform holder partners are also developing, such as Project Natal from Microsoft," said Guthrie.

Well it's their own fault. Had they took all of these games they released and simply released the same tracks as weekly DLC, GH would seem like a well supported series. Instead they choose to milk it in a very obvious way, turning the name brand into a punchline. Did they really need to drop Smash Hits on disc? Band Hero? The funny thing is releasing the tracks in those games as DLC would have made them more money.

What we have here is a relatively easy game series to produce, and Activision couldn't resist going the milking route. This goes to show that certain publishers, without the restraint of development time, would totally push sequels on shelves. Mean while, EA is letting Harmonix pace themselves with less games/higher quality.

What urks me is that the GH team actually have great ideas that can push the genre, and I imagine if they were allowed longer gestation periods they could have some great GH games instead of wasting their time with spin-offs that could have been DLC packs.

Funky Fly
11-08-2009, 04:47 AM
I'll give them GH 3 - 5 and the band-specific titles (being generous, I know), but they definitely should have put everything else out as DLC. But they have more coming and it's just getting ridiculous.

Yeah, this is something they could easily fuck up, both in terms of the "more realistic" route and the Natal support. But if they get it right....There's a good chance they could rape the shit out of the competition.

One of the big appeals to the Rock Band platform is marketing new material. Which is why we keep getting stuff from so-and-so's new album, rather than the classics people want. I use "classics" loosely, because this is becoming typical of pretty much every genre and decade.

Though they still put out enough good shit I can't really say I'm dissatisfied.

Gonna try to get in on this.

Hey gang,

You’re an educated bunch, so I’m sure you’re all thoroughly informed about our plans for Rock Band Network. If you’re not, here’s some handy reading to give you the broad strokes that will get you up to speed. So here’s where we’re at now: we’re nearly at the open Beta and we’re looking to get more people from the forums involved. We recruited a handful of posters at the beginning of the closed Beta and some of them have been all star contributors to the early RBN process. We want more of that.

So what can you do to get involved? We’d like to develop a robust peer review team that will play every new song as it hits the pipeline, give Grade A comments, and ensure that these tracks are as tight as possible. And who better to peer review these submissions than the diehards on these forums? That’s what we thought.

If you’re interested in getting involved with RBN, post here and let us know. We’ll check in on this thread and draw from the pool of volunteers and hook some of you up with free trials of RBN in exchange for your time and feedback. We’re looking for people who are willing to make a serious commitment to peer reviewing and becoming an active part of the RBN creator community. If you’re not super charged about RBN, and if you maybe only try out new songs once every few months, then this maybe isn’t the thing for you. But if you’ve got the following…

1) an Xbox registered in the US with an XBL Gold Account
2) a PC
3) a burning desire to play more songs in RB
4) the enthusiasm for checking in for reviews on a regular basis

…then it sounds like this IS the thing for you. Post here, provide as many details as you feel necessary (how many hours a week you play RB, instrument of choice, recording background, etc) and we’ll start getting you plugged into RBN so you can say you were in on the ground floor and helped us shape the next step of music gaming.

Talk to you soon!

Thanks so much for your interest in the Rock Band Network. We’re excited to tell you that we’ve accepted you for early entrance to Creators.RockBand.com and we have already added your RockBand Username to the RBN database! You’re a few steps away from checking out the content in the pipeline before anyone else!

As HMXHenry explained in the forum thread, to participate in RBN you’ll need:

* A PC running Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7. (Macs are not supported for auditioning, as we use Games for Windows Live to transfer your song to an Xbox 360.)
* Rock Band 2
* Xbox360 with at least a 20+ Gig hard drive
* A Rock Band Creators account
* Xbox Gamer Tag
* Xbox LIVE Gold Membership
* XNA Creators Club Premium Subscription
* Magma (a free tool for transfer that you can download from Creators.RockBand.com

We assume that most of you have the above all ready to go, but many of you will be participating in XNA for the first time. To set that up, follow the awesome instructions at the bottom of this email!

While some of you have identified that you’re excited to submit your own material (which we’re eager to hear!), the majority of you are jumping into this process to playtest and peer review new tracks. We’re excited for you to help steer the authoring process since, as dedicated Rock Band players, you know what works best! We have a bunch of great bands in the process already who need your help getting their songs from rough drafts to final sellable versions!

Harrison told the Chicago Tribune in an interview that he is "working on 'Rock Band 3' and making the controllers more real so people can actually learn how to play music while playing the game".

Hmm, wonder if the part about 'making the controllers more real' has anything to do with possibly somehow finding a way to integrate Natal?

Besides the Chicago Tribune, I've also seen this cited in Official XBox Magazine, in Issue 106 (Feb. '10). Hopefully with the RB3 we'll get more songs which people actually know and like, rather than obscure stuff that nobody recognizes until it's inclusion in a 'music game' lands it on radio stations' daily playlists everywhere.

Hey gang,

Sorry for the slightly late DLC announcement this week. TGIF! The 6 tracks hitting Rock Band next week will be the remaining temporary exclusives from the Country Track Pack, finally available for download. We got a lot of questions about these songs when we released the last Country DLC pack, so we know there's lots of folks that will be excited for these songs. And for those of you looking for something else, rest assured that we'll have more songs to announce next week to add to the 1,000+ song library of material available in Rock Band!

Available on Xbox 360 and Wii (Feb. 2) and PlayStation 3 system (Feb. 4):

Kenny Chesney – “She Thinks My Tractor’s Sexy”
Montgomery Gentry – “Gone”
Rascal Flatts – “Me and My Gang”
Sara Evans – “Suds in the Bucket”
Trace Adkins – “Swing”
Willie Nelson – “On the Road Again”

Ron Wasserman, the man behind Mighty Morphin Power Ranger's kick ass music during the un-morphed fight scenes, is getting down with the Rock Band network. This track was never on the show and was actually produced fairly recently (long after they stopped using his tunes on the show). You can see he still retains the sound we all remember, all we need is to hear Kimberly's high pitched combat shrieks for a full memory blitz. Being that this tuned wasn't used for the show, and it's being tested on the Network, I wonder if he'll put up the classic tunes as well. 5-4-1, Fight, Combat, and especially We Need A Hero would be a cool track pack. And of course the main PR themes would be ideal, if he's allowed to do that anyway. I can only hope.

With the new service, unknown bands are seeing their chance to get in on the act. But popular groups not quite big enough to make the "Rock Band" playlist are also preparing material for the do-it-yourself upload store, including Creed and Evanescence, each of which has sold tens of millions of albums in the past decade.

Apparently "Higher" is already in the testing phase. WOOOOO!
