Yeah, I should have enough money. Don't know whether to get the PS3 or 360 version. Some games have been freezing up on my 360 so I'm wary about buying new games for it.

#2. ‟Stone Cold” Steve Austin

Was there ever a doubt that Stone Cold Steve Austin would make our list? The man was one of the pioneers of the Attitude era and Vince McMahon's rival for more Pay Per Views than most would care to remember.

Thing is, Austin was never super-popular because of his in-ring prowess. Sure, the Stone Cold Stunner was a great move, but it was only A-W-E-S-O-M-E because it usually was done on top of the announce table, with someone spewing beer as they went down, or with D-Lo Brown flipping around after the fact.

All that said, we're picking Austin from WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2008 because this grappler is how we'll want to remember Steve in games -- a solid entrance, a black vest, the middle finger, and a whole lot of glaring. He's not in Jean shorts, he's not driving a beer truck, and he's not all roided-out like Legends of WrestleMania.

This is the Rattlesnake, and we miss him.

#1. Brock Lesnar

Oh, Brock Lesnar, why did you have to be such a dick and quit the WWE?
In WWE SmackDown! Here Comes the Pain, you were nothing short of a brain- stomping powerhouse.

Do you, reader, remember the first time you throttled someone as Brock? The way he swung his fist and tape-wrapped wrist? The way he physically dwarfed everyone in the ring? The way the F-5 left other characters destroyed on the ground? The way you played -- mouth agape -- as you ran over challenger after challenger with those massive clotheslines? Those are memories that will stay with us forever.

The saddest part about all of this is that Brock was such an ass when he left the company, we probably (never say never in the WWE) won't ever see him as a Legend in a future title. I mean this guy was one of the most powerful characters in the history of the franchise and we'll only have Here Comes the Pain's goofy cover to remember him by.

Damn you, Brock. Welcome to the SmackDown Hall of Fame.

Thank god that's over.

Yeah. If Greg had made some smarter picks and maybe re-positioned some of the guys who belonged there, it might have been a half-decent list. But, seriously, Brock Lesnar as #1? I'd rank him probably #5 at the absolute lowest, but he definitely should not have taken top honors.

missing the point, huh

Not at all. While nobody can doubt that Brock did some pretty amazing stuff during his roughly 2 years in WWE, he's still pretty far from deserving to be mentioned with some of today's and yesterday's top WWE talents. You know who I mean, guys like Jericho, Jeff Hardy, Punk, Austin, Rock, Benoit, Flair, Perfect, "Hitman", "Piper", Sammartino, etc., etc., etc.

So, like I said before, he was definitely deserving of a spot on that list, just not #1.

And to address your point, thecc, yes it was pretty ridiculous to make up that list by Greg in the first place. The only reason I can think of as to why it may have been done is that they wanted to put together an article that they felt could replace the SmackDown! Countdown from years previous. Obviously that was a huge flop, and should never be attempted again.

Xero
10-15-2009, 11:43 PM
I thought the point of the article was for the in-game characters, not the wrestlers themselves.

In that case, Brock easily wins. He was easily the most dominating in the games.

Okay, we wanted this for years... And now I think we're about ready for an actual TPWW program with SvR10. I will never let rest the absurdity of this board never having a successful meeting/tourny/league/promotion with the game since it became online enabled. There were many factors (XB360 owners, online connectivity, meeting times, so on), but I think we ironed out some of the complicated stuff. Most of us are Gold Members so there's a major hurdle handled. PS3 owners suck it.

How will this work? Well after some thought I figure it works somewhere in between cfed, league, tourny, and 'wild west' rules. Also, for the sake of a form of fairness - I thought about certain restrictions regarding the CAWs we would enter... All of these ideas stem from how we meet, and why we don't meet, in these online games. I believe I found an elegant way of doing this. These ideas also stem from how me and a buddy been doing it for a fuckin decade. Some things you can trust me on.

First of all, I think it would be kick-ass to do this 'para-kayfabe'. It would operate as a promotion called True Pro World Wrestling (TPWW). We would have one show to start (and choose a PPV arena to be 'our' arena), and these shows will be made up of matches set up by a real TPWW Commissioner (who will also be para-kayfabe). The name of the show will merely be the name of the arena we choose.

We will all enter one CAW into TPWW. There will be standards. I'm sorry, but I don't wanna fight one of those 'joke' CAWs with chicken masks or some shit, how about you? Be individualistic, of course, but I hope we can agree that if we can't see him in real life, head back to the drawing board (and don't be personally offended). This 'company' will only support singles competition for now. If you want to participate, lend (or in my case, make) a CAW especially for TPWW's promotion.

Let's talk about attributes. This is very important, because we all know how it is to face over-buffed characters in games that support upgradable characters with online versus modes. Some of us have time to buff up a CAW into a 99 rated god, some of us don't. What we did at home was ignore stat collecting altogether and keep our CAWs on even ground, and it kept it fun. However, because of how they structured CAWs in the last few years we should allow upgrading to a certain extent. Something to be done quickly. The new abilities system (and how you stupidly collect them instead of just choosing them) influences this as well.

The first TPWW show should be a big deal, and handled similarly to the real shows in the Wrestling Forum. Threads with card previews and results and all. Also, promos will be cut right here. All the drama and shit talk in text (a cfed borrow). However, I don't think Story Creator will serve us well in an online meet up. A show doesn't have to happen in one night, a 'broadcast' lasts as long as it takes for us to meet up and have our matches. I recommend we stretch one kayfabe night into a week or so. After each match members can cut a promo right here. A real week should look like one night of programming. After four shows, we have a PPV. If you're in a program with another member, coincide via PMs to really entertain the others. Why not? Wrestling's fake! Set up surprise finishes and 'scripts'!

So in summary:

We have some online exhibition matches, test the waters.
We create, slightly buffer, and submit CAWs to TPWW's inaugural roster.
A Commissioner is chosen. He may create a CAW as well, play heel or face, and join the action at times. He will be in charge of setting up the card however.
Somebody (not necessarily the Commish) will make an official thread hyping this show (hopefully a VG/Wrestling Forum simulcast). He posts the cards the Commish sets up in the OP. After each match, similar to the SF4 Tourny, updates will be posted. Members with an upcoming match can cut promos after this (scripted or improved, both has uses).
Repeat until a 'night' is concluded.
Then we mull over the event and whether we can keep that up for a full season!

This is the most elegant, sensible way I see this happening based on past meet-ups and my own experience with playing out CAW promotions. Khuntri's seen this first hand, he knows what time it is. And we've seen us have some decent meet ups too. What do you guys say?

Certainly you don't mean the WWF/WWE nWo, because that shit was stupid. Now if you mean the WCW nWo factions, I entirely agree. But the thing about the WWF/E nWo was that they booked most of it so stupidly that the once 3-man group, grew to such massive proportions, that finally it just basically imploded, I believe starting with the kicking out of the nWo of Booker T.

loopydate
10-16-2009, 02:57 PM
I definitely mean about the first year of the WCW nWo. Once they started letting everyone and their mom join (and then again during their horrible WWE run), it was way less fun. But Hall, Nash, Hogan, Syxx, Giant, Bischoff, Bagwell, Norton, etc. The real nWo. Where week in and week out, you didn't know whether they were going to cover up the set with their own logo, recruit a new member, arbitrarily beat the shit out of the participants in a match... Best TV WCW ever produced.

The big deal is they hyped more tappable submission moves this year but then made like 5 more of them tappable. Typical.</font>

I bet something like the Pedigree Rumble finisher will just be - Pegidree > oppenent struggles up > running clothesline to the outside. I mean, how else could they do it?

Evil Vito
10-18-2009, 12:12 PM
<font color=goldenrod>They said that "The Rock will be available at some point via transferrable code" to everyone. Which I think pretty much means if you ordered from Play.com or whatever you got the code for The Rock from the get-go. Whereas Austin will only be unlockable via GameStop pre-order.

I like that Champion of Champions belt...amazed they actually put ECW on it.</font>

Evil Vito
10-18-2009, 12:39 PM
<font color=goldenrod>And apparently, there is slated to be a DLC download within a couple of weeks of the game's release...meant to be a big surprise.

Have a feeling it will be something lame...or some gay shit like everyone gets to unlock Austin even though it was supposed to be Gamestop exclusive.

But, if it's new current characters or some sort of patch that allows us to use CAWs in offline CAS mode, or lets us edit downloaded CAWs, or something...that would rule. Not counting on it though.</font>

<font color=goldenrod>Yep. THQ/Yuke's just do a really shitty job with some things. It seems as though their concern with CAWs was that people would download them but then re-upload them as their own.

The simple solution would be to just put downloaded CAWs into a different section and you aren't allowed to re-upload or copy them.....this allows free editing without anybody losing credit for their creations. But instead they pick an option that limits it.</font>

<font color=goldenrod>Wow. :| Apparently there is one thing that CAN be edited with downloaded CAWs...their stats. Because they all start at the default OVR rating when you download them. :| You have to build them all up separately.

While this isn't a huge deal, as CAWs can be built up hella quick this year even if they are just a CPU character in a match, and it gives you control over the OVR (prevents you from having to d/l a Zack Ryder CAW and see it be 99 OVR)...so gay we can edit that yet not edit the fucking theme music.</font>

<font color=goldenrod>Enjoying for the most part but unfortunately, Championship Scramble mode is a bust. The AI is set for everybody to break up ANY pin attempt, even though the current "champion" is really the only person who would have a vested interest in stopping the pin.

So unless you win the belt early or have someone who can utilize submissions, there will be no title changes as the likelihood of having all 3 other guys knocked out is remote. I had a draw the only time I tried playing it.

Shame, the mode had potential.</font>

Xero

From what I've done in the game thus far, which is edit 3 attires/create my guy/2 exibition matchs, I like it better then last year. I haven't played online yet but I figured the PS3 version would still lag a bit like last year. I don't feel like looking through the thread but I assume that if you download a character, it doesn't come with the entrance theme if the music is custom.

Also, since you can't upload superstars that you download, I fail to see the point in not allowing you to edit downloads. I'm hoping there is enough of an outcry that a patch comes out, because it renders the online sharing community useless for those who like their caws to be as accurate as possible.

I don't know if it's just the RtWM, but I think it's cool that the interference actully does something worthwhile. As Orton, Legacy ran down and distracted the ref. Then Cody jumped in and rocked Batista with a chair. I didn't really know what was going on, but I ended up tossing Batista out of the ring accidentally. He didn't get up, though. I won by count out.
