Droford of TPWW:

I would like to make a bet with you. I need a response from you.

If the Baltimore Orioles meet the Oakland Athletics in the playoffs (I'm talking about a series, not some 1 game wild card nonsense) then I propose this:

The loser of the series has to film themselves doing the "Bernie Lean" for at least 60 seconds. That's all. I'd prefer the whole song but I won't get greedy.

Droford, I need a response.
im no accepting ..and really the only way they play is in wc game and i want the A's to beat Texas.

Assuming the Rangers were to lose today, their collapse might be considered worse than the Yankees this year or the Red Sox and Braves of last year.

Wasted a 4-5 game lead in their previous 9 games and occurred a lot later than the other teams.

Wait a minute.

So the 2 Wild Card teams from each league don't really advance, but rather, play each other to see which of the two actually does get to play in the NLDS?

Do I have it right?

Yes, they both make the playoffs. They play in the Wild Card Round of the playoffs. The winner of that round advances to the next round which is the League Division Series.

Think of it as the division winners having first round byes.

Keith

But from what I read, the "wild card round of the playoffs" is just one game on Friday. Whoever wins that game goes on to play in the LDS.

I don't know how owners agreed to this BS.

Anything can happen in one game. An umpire may blow a call, a pitcher may have a bad day, a player may get injured.

It's stupid.

In a way yes considering they held onto the division lead for almost the entire season.

Only real difference is the guaranteed 2nd Wild Card spot so they can't do a complete collapse. The Wild Card round in the AL could end up being just like previous Play-In rounds when teams were tied assuming the Rangers and Os end up with the same record so neither would have been eliminated using last year's format.

Keith

If you make the playoffs, can you really consider it a collapse? That seems silly.

When you take into account that winning the division means you get to rest while the 2 wild card teams from each league play an "all or nothing game", the last thing a team wants is to lose its division lead and fall into the wild card and play that one game where anything can happen.

So I guess you can call it a collapse (of sorts).

Nationals won this afternoon and locked up the #1 seed and home field advantage for the playoffs.

And here's the scenarios for the AL teams playing for their spots and the Reds/Nats. You can thank Jayson Stark at ESPN for this.

If the Yankees lose and the Orioles win

Then the AL East is tied (at 94-68), and the Yankees and Orioles have to play a tiebreaker game Thursday in Baltimore. The winner is the AL East champ. The loser is the wild-card team. But is it the "first" wild card or the "second" wild card? That depends on what happens in Oakland.

If the A's beat the Rangers

Then Oakland (94-68) wins the AL West, and Texas (93-69) is a wild-card team. But would the Rangers be the "first" wild card or the "second" wild card? That depends on what happens in the AL East:

If the Yankees and Orioles both win Wednesday, the Orioles (94-68) would host the Rangers (93-69) in the wild-card game Friday. Why? Because a Baltimore win Wednesday would give the Orioles the better record.
If the Orioles lose Wednesday and finish with the same record as Texas (93-69), the Rangers would host the wild-card game Friday because they won the season series from Baltimore.
If the Rangers lose and there's a tie for the AL East (at 94-68), the AL East loser hosts the Rangers in the wild-card game because either still would have more wins (94) than Texas (93).
If the Rangers beat the A's

Then the Rangers (94-68) win the AL West, and Oakland (93-67) is a wild card. But is it the "first" wild card or "second" wild card? Again, that depends on developments in the AL East.
If the Yankees and Orioles both win Wednesday, the Orioles would host the A's in the wild-card game because Baltimore would have one more regular-season win (94) than Oakland (93).

If the Yankees lose, the Orioles win, there's a tie for the AL East and Oakland loses to Texas, the loser of the AL East tiebreaker game hosts the A's. Again, the reason: The AL East loser still would have more wins (94) than Oakland (93).

If the Yankees, Orioles and A's all lose Wednesday, the Orioles and A's would finish with the same record (93-69). If that happens, the A's host the wild-card game Friday. Why? Because they won the season series.
Who's No. 1 in the AL?

If the Yankees win Wednesday:

<?p>Then this is simple. They're the No. 1 seed in the AL. So their first Division Series game is Sunday at the winner of the wild-card game.
The AL West winner then would head for Detroit to start its Division Series on Saturday.

If there's a Yankees-Orioles tie:
This gets trickier. Then there's a three-way tie for the best record in the AL (Yankees, Orioles and the AL West champ, all at 94-68).

Under that scenario, the AL East tiebreaker game would not be used to determine seeding, even though it is otherwise considered a regular-season game. So how would that seeding be sorted out? Here's the breakdown:

Yankees win the AL East, Rangers win the AL West: Yankees are the No. 1 seed and play the wild-card winner. Rangers are the No. 2 seed and play at Detroit. Why? Yankees won the season series.
Yankees win the AL East, A's win the AL West: A's are the No. 1 seed and play the wild-card survivor. Yankees are the No. 2 seed and face Detroit. Why? Yankees and A's split the season series, but A's had the better record in division games.
Orioles win the AL East, Rangers win the AL West: Rangers are the No. 1 seed and draw the wild-card winner. Orioles are the No. 2 seed and play Detroit. Why? Rangers won the season series.
Orioles win the AL East, A's win the AL West: A's are the No. 1 seed. Orioles are the No. 2 seed. Same LDS matchups. Why? Orioles won the season series.
If the Yankees and the Orioles both lose Wednesday

Then there's a tie for the best record between the Yankees and the AL West champ (at 93-69).
Under that scenario, the Yankees are the No. 1 seed if the Rangers win the West -- but the No. 2 seed if the A's win the West. Why? See the tiebreaker scenarios above.
Who's No. 1 in the NL?

The Reds and Nationals head into their games Wednesday with the same record (97-64). So …

If the Reds win and the Nationals lose

Then the Reds are the No. 1 seed and play Sunday at the home of the wild-card survivor. And the Nationals are the No. 2 seed and play Saturday in San Francisco.

If the Nationals win and the Reds lose

Then the Nationals are the No. 1 seed and visit the wild-card winner Sunday. And the Reds are the No. 2 seed and start their Division Series on Saturday in San Francisco.

If the Nationals and Reds finish tied

Then the Nationals are the No. 1 seed. And the Reds are the No. 2 seed. (Same matchups as the Nationals win/Reds lose scenario above.) Why? Nationals won the season series.

Yeup and he's been teasing it would happen with how odd he's been acting recently. Today he finally vented out against the entire coaching staff that hated him since he's been hired.

Lucchino ends up as the biggest loser since Bobby V was his personal pick even though he refused to allow Bobby V to handpick the coaching staff. He's lost a lot of influence over the team since last September.

I feel like I need to write something about Chipper. So here goes.

Chipper Jones is someone I won't appreciate until he's truly gone (possibly as soon as Friday). I must admit that Chipper has never been my favorite Braves player (when I was younger, Brian Hunter was my favorite player for some reason), but I think I never chose him as my favorite player because he was such a mark of consistency on the team each year that I didn't have to root for him to do well specifically. Chipper just always delivered.

I was always so focused on the Braves' new cleanup hitter growing up (McGriff, Galarraga, Sheffield, even Teixeira much later on) that it never really occurred to me until this year how consistent he made the middle of the lineup for his entire career. And with all the focus on the strength of the Braves' pitching staff during the 90s, it's no wonder that Chipper snuck under my radar. It's crazy to think for me now that I've had the opportunity to see one of the greatest third-basemen of all time play for the better part of twenty years (even with the old hometown Macon Braves), all for my favorite team, and that I've somehow under-appreciated him through it all.

Gonna miss you, Larry. I'm sure you'll stay with the Braves in some capacity, but the Braves won't be the same without you and Bobby in the dugout.

As if it isn't obvious:

Playoff predictions:

Wild Card

Cardinals def. Braves 4-2: Don't really have any other reason for this other than the fact that they're hyping the shit out of the Braves winning like 20 Medlen starts in a row. That's usually a curse.

Rangers def. Orioles 7-3: Sorry Droford. The Rangers are pissed the fuck off after choking away the divisional lead, so I think the Texas bats show up in full force.

DS:

Nationals over Cardinals in 4: Cardinals grab a win in Game 2 at Busch to tie up the series but the Nats then handle their business at home.

Reds over Giants in 5: This looks like a fun series. I see it going back and forth with the Reds winning games 1, 3, and 5 to advance.

Yankees over Rangers in 4: Rangers come off the momentum from their Wild Card game to win game 1 at home, but then the Yankees take it over from there.

Tigers over Athletics in 4: Tigers take advantage of the home field, grabbing 2 wins at Comerica and forcing the A's to need to do another sweep at home to stay alive. A's salvage game 3 but their dream season ends in game 4.

CS:

Reds over Nationals in 6: Reds bounce back from a first game loss by taking games 2, 3, and 4. They barely avoid clinching the pennant at home and instead have to finish it off in DC in game 6.

Yankees over Tigers in 7: The teams split the first two games in NY before the Yanks win games 3 and 4. Tigers win game 5 with their season on the line only to then drop game 6 in the Bronx.

WS:

Yankees over Reds in 6: Yanks come out of the chutes fast by winning the first 2 in Cincy. Reds take games 3 and 5 in NY to give themselves a chance to close it out at home. Game 6 is a close one but Soriano avoids pulling a Neftali Feliz, finishing it off and giving the Yankees #28.

The Yankees winning the WS is one of the few predictions I made before the year starts that's actually still possible, so I'm not about to change it now. They don't have the best pitching in these playoffs, but their pitching is still very solid and I just think they have too many offensive weapons to contain - several of whom have a knack for coming through when it matters most.

Droford
10-04-2012, 08:13 AM
Lol the best part of o's/rangers is the game would have happened under the old 1 wild card team format anyway..I think the rangers are going to have a hard time getting up for this game on an emotional level..the fans too..last thing they probably expected a few weeks ago. Texas barely played .500 ball in September (15-14) while the o's went 20-9. The rangers were actually out scored in the month 129-124 whereas the os scored 154-104.

All the pressure is on Texas not to fuck everything up and be out of the playoffs day one..I really have a good feeling about the game, it doesn't seem like anyone outside of the Baltimore area thinks the o's can win which is fine..Buck is even toying with them by not announcing who the starter is til tomorrow...

The A's and O's make my top 5 because they're doing something similar to what the Rays did in 2008 (and because everybody loves an underdog). The Cardinals are #2 because they're my favorite NL team. And the Yankees are #4 because they hold Spring Training in Tampa, they have a huge fan base here, and I'd rather an AL East team win, if my Rays aren't in.

How the Os are pulling this off, I do not know. I picked the Rangers as the best team in the AL,and now theyre gone. Yankees have a pretty decent chance if their pitching can hold up.

I must admit, I did not expect that kind of reaction from the Braves' fanbase last night. Most passionate I've ever seen a group of fans in Georgia period (only thing close would be a few Bulldogs games). Unfortunately, with Chipper gone, I'm not really sure where the Braves or the fanbase goes next year. Probably into mediocrity, unless Uggla and McCann remember how to hit. Bourn wasn't great down the stretch either.

I did not expect that many people at a Braves game in the first place.

I wouldn't wish what happened to the Rangers on my worst enemy. One of the most soul-crushing losses in World Series history last year followed by an utter collapse of the division title, leading to them getting knocked out in what was essentially a tiebreaker game.

There's some serious talent on that team and they have a great farm system, but I can't help but wonder if they'll just have an inexplicably shit year next year. Losses like this can linger for a long time.

Uggla wasnt bad. McCann fell off big time. Braves have some decisions to make. They need a new third baseman and centerfielder. I think moving Prado to third might be a possibility. They should move Uggla to left and try and nab a second baseman. Cf is anyones guess.

Braves got hosed and I'm glad Texas lost..... Hamilton should be out of town by the off-season.....

Having just checked his stats, Uggla had career lows in hits, HRs, RBIs, batting average, slugging, OPS, OPS+, and total bases this season. That is awful.

So the last time the Reds were in the playoffs, they got no hit on the road in Game 1 by a guy who threw a perfect game earlier in the year.

Tonight they're on the road for Game 1 facing Matt Cain who threw a perfect game earlier this year.

But he probably won't throw a no hitter tonight...

Considering all the talk about firing Ron Washington, wouldn't be surprised if he gets all the blame for their inability to win a title for a third year in a row. He's been their most successful manager in terms of playoff success but also the most scrutinized one ever since the new owners arrived.

I'm hoping the o's can get up 2-0 on the Yankees at home some how..the prospects of only having to win 1 of 3 in NY would seem very good. I'm really figuring a split and best of 3 in NY though. I think there could be upsets across the board in terms of the lower seeds winning given they get the first two at home in the D's.

As far as how they're doing it..Magic.

Playoff predictions:

Yankees over Rangers in 4: Rangers come off the momentum from their Wild Card game to win game 1 at home, but then the Yankees take it over from there.

For simplicity sake I'll say this happens in the Yanks/O's ALDS as well. I think the O's will get a win, but I just can't see the Yankees losing this series.
