All I can say to that is "isn't the goal of every team to make the playoffs and get hot at the right time?"

Exactly. To be honest, rarely does the best team in the regular season actually go on to win the whole thing. Hell, it doesn't matter if you make the playoffs with a 7-9 record, as long as you win the Super Bowl then it doesn't fucking matter.

NFL Clubs Implement Fan Code Of Conduct Policy
NewOrleansSaints.com,
Tuesday, August 05, 2008 - 2:24 PM
The NFL and all 32 NFL clubs have created a fan code of conduct to help promote a positive fan environment at NFL stadiums, it was announced today.
The fan code of conduct is designed to set clear expectations and encourage a stadium environment that is enjoyable for all fans. Teams may add additional provisions to the standard code based on local circumstances or preferences. Each team will communicate its code of conduct during the preseason to season-ticket holders and fans through mailings, online, and in-stadium signage, and other messages.
“The in-stadium experience is critically important to the NFL, our clubs and our fans and it will be a major focus this season,” said NFL Commissioner ROGER GOODELL. “We are committed to improving the fan experience in every way we can -- from the time fans arrive in the parking lot to when they depart the stadium. We want everyone to be able to come to our stadiums and enjoy the entire day.”
The code of conduct is intended to address behavior that detracts from the gameday experience. Any fan in violation of these provisions will be subject to ejection without refund and loss of ticket privileges for future games.
In addition to the fan code of conduct, the NFL and its clubs will evaluate fan feedback and existing programs to ensure their effectiveness and shape the development of new programs.
These measures are designed to build on the many outstanding programs already in place at NFL stadiums to enhance the fan experience.
FAN CODE OF CONDUCT
“The National Football League and its teams are committed to creating a safe, comfortable, and enjoyable experience for all fans, both in the stadium and in the parking lot. We want all fans attending our games to enjoy the experience in a responsible fashion. When attending a game, you are required to refrain from the following behaviors:
· Behavior that is unruly, disruptive, or illegal in nature
· Intoxication or other signs of alcohol impairment that results in irresponsible behavior
· Foul or abusive language or obscene gestures
· Interference with the progress of the game (including throwing objects onto the field)
· Failing to follow instructions of stadium personnel
· Verbal or physical harassment of opposing team fans
“Event patrons are responsible for their conduct as well as the conduct of their guests and/or persons occupying their seats. Stadium staff will promptly intervene to support an environment where event patrons, their guests, and other fans can enjoy the event free from the above behavior. Event patrons and guests who violate these provisions will be subject to ejection without refund and loss of ticket privileges for future games.”

<font color=goldenrod>Exactly.
It feels weird...you would think that after winning the SB my expectations would be high, but they aren't. Last year, I was expecting them to at LEAST get past the Wild Card round of the playoffs and it would be a good year. This year...I'd probably only be pissed off if they missed the playoffs altogether. It's like being responsible for one of the best comebacks and upsets ever has actually LOWERED my expectations, and I'm not sure why.</font> :o
Gonzo
08-06-2008, 10:41 PM
My hopes are high for a strong showing in 2008. I would be extremely pissed off if the Giants missed the playoffs this year. I think that 2007's results are as good as you can hope for. The only way to repeat them would be to in fact, repeat.
Evil Vito
08-06-2008, 11:45 PM
<font color=goldenrod>Yeah, that might be what it was. In 2007, I knew that they had to make the playoffs and win at least one game there after back-to-back first round losses, or else Coughlin was toast.
This year, Coughlin isn't toast under any circumstances...and I'd only think its a bad year if they don't make the playoffs. A first round exit wouldn't even bother me so much (as long as it's not a slaughter like against the Panthers 2 years ago)...obviously I'd love to see them go deeper, but yeah. Hard to grill the team after last year.</font>

Favre era ends in Green Bay with trade to Jets
<hr size="1" width="100%" noshade="noshade"> ESPN.com news services
The Brett Favre (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=1025) era in Green Bay apparently came to an end late Wednesday as the longtime Packers star quarterback was traded to the New York Jets (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=nyj), Foxsports.com first reported. The compensation, believed to be a single draft pick that rises in value depending upon how the Jets perform during the 2008 season, was confirmed by ESPN's Michael Smith on Wednesday night. The Jets declined to comment on the report. Favre's agent, James "Bus" Cook, confirmed in an e-mail to The Associated Press earlier Wednesday that the Jets and Tampa Bay Buccaneers were emerging as the most likely trade destinations for the three-time MVP. Packers general manager Ted Thompson skipped practice Wednesday morning, and his scheduled early afternoon media availability was postponed indefinitely -- signs that a deal could be in the works. Thompson also was not seen at Wednesday night's practice, although team president and CEO Mark Murphy made an appearance. Favre was on a private plane that left for Hattiesburg, Miss. at 1:25 p.m. EDT Cook and Favre's wife, Deanna, also were aboard the plane that landed two hours later. Favre's family home is near Hattiesburg. In Mississippi, Favre confirmed that he was considering the Jets and Buccaneers. "We're working on it," Favre said in video posted on Jackson TV station WJTV's Web site. "Hopefully we can get something resolved. I've been saying that for quite a while now. I don't want to say we're running out of time, but I need to get into a camp somewhere." Tampa Bay coach Jon Gruden refused to address speculation that the team was on the verge of a deal for Favre, sidestepping a question about whether he had spoken to Favre Tuesday night. "I'm not going to talk about it," Gruden said. "I don't know anything other than what happened today on the practice field, and I don't want to address any more speculation at this point. Brett's situation will resolve itself during the coming days I would assume. But at this point and time, all I can comment on is our football team and what we did today." Gruden acknowledged that he's always willing to explore ways to improve his team. "We are a good football team," Gruden said. "We're trying to become a great one. We'll do anything we can to get better. And if that involves looking at other players, by George that's our job. That's our responsibility." Packers coach Mike McCarthy spoke to Favre again Tuesday night, but there was no indication that their conversation did anything to change the fractured relationship between Favre and the franchise. "It was just very general," McCarthy said of the conversation with Favre, who was excused from practice Wednesday. "Just how he was doing, where he was with the process, things like that." McCarthy said he was happy the rest of his players were getting a chance to move forward. "We talked about it last night," McCarthy said. "The players want resolution, they want what everybody wants. To come out here every day and talk about somebody that is not here and then shows up, it's gone on too long, and understandably so. They want to play football." Packers players vented frustration over the Favre situation Tuesday, after fans chanting "Bring Back Brett!" turned practice into a zoo-like atmosphere and reporters continued asking questions about Favre instead of football. After McCarthy made it clear Tuesday that Favre's football future wouldn't be in Green Bay, players seemed to have some sense of closure. "It was just important to get things moving," Packers tackle Mark Tauscher (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=5253) said. "Obviously, there's no closure as of yet, but I think we've kind of been told what's going on and I think we all kind of know where everything stands." Packers cornerback Charles Woodson (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=4271) -- who said Tuesday that the saga had "gone on long enough" -- said Wednesday that the Packers' front office gave players the answers they needed. "From what I understand, for the most part it's taken care of," Woodson said. "Now it's just about the Packers and not about the situation. It's over now. From what I understand, it's pretty much over." And if the Packers end up playing against Favre in Tampa on Sept. 28? "Once you're on another team, you're on another team," Woodson said. "I think for the most part the locker room would have liked to see him back here. But like I say, once you're on another team ..." The final split between the Packers and Favre became obvious Tuesday night. McCarthy told reporters that after extensive conversations with Favre over two days, he had determined that Favre doesn't have the right mind-set to play for the Packers. After approximately six hours of what McCarthy called "brutally honest" conversations with Favre, McCarthy said Favre couldn't seem to get past emotional wounds that were opened as tensions mounted in recent weeks -- even with the chance to win his starting job back potentially on the table. "The train has left the station, whatever analogy you want," McCarthy said Tuesday. "He needs to jump on the train and let's go. Or, if we can't get past things that have happened, I have to keep the train moving." Favre left Lambeau Field just before Packers practice Tuesday afternoon. "We're at a stalemate," Favre told ESPN Tuesday morning. Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

John Clayton from ESPN:
This trade is a thumbs down for the Hall of Fame quarterback.
Jets fans have to be excited because they no longer have to worry about Chad Pennington's weak arm or the inconsistencies of the developing Kellen Clemens. Favre brings to New York the potential of a 4,000-yard season as a passer who can hit better than 63 percent of his throws.
But if his heart wasn't into competing against Aaron Rodgers for the starting job in Green Bay, how is Favre going to be playing second fiddle to Brady in the AFC East? Mike McCarthy had it right Tuesday. He said Favre was in a tough place.
To come out of retirement and have only hopes of a wild-card berth has to be disappointing to Favre. True, he tested the will of the Packers' organization and lost. He thought he was big enough to get his release. He wasn't. He thought he could force a trade to the Vikings. He couldn.'t.
Tired and mentally exhausted from his Green Bay visit, he agreed to listen to going to Tampa Bay or the Jets. He preferred the Vikings. The Packers said no and traded him out of the conference.
The Packers beat down their icon. They've moved on to Rodgers. Favre only agreed to the trade because he knew it was time to get in camp and train for the regular season.
Going to the Jets is certainly a downer for him.

and I thought I wore patriot blinders... wanna bet on 10-6?
I can't wait to see if the over/under for the season goes up and take the under.
Let's be real here guys... he's a 38 going to be 39 during the season year old gun slinger.
yeah, he had a decent year last year.. but look at 2006 and 2005.
He's never had to learn a "new system" since he was traded from Atlanta.
He's never had to learn a whole new set of personel.
What type of shape is he in?
and it's not like this is Feb or March... the season is a month away.
Don't get me wrong, I don't think he's a bum and he's should be an upgrade on Pennington, but a little reality check.
Dunno, I just think the downside for the Jets is bigger then the upside... although at a worst case of a 3rd round pick isn't a horrible gamble..
and Ferguson is going to have to step it up big time... Mangold has been a beast since being drafted but Ferguson hasn't lived up to the hype and if they start spining Favre blind side blocker like a top they're in big trouble.

oh and fuck, I would trade away half the team if the fucking Jets get to the Superbowl.
the contract has a clause that if the Jets deal him to Minessota they owe the Packers 3 first round picks..
So, the Vikes just need another Hershal Walker deal... send 5 #1's to the Jets and the Jets send 3 to GB and pick up 2 1st round picks for nothing!

the Jets will probably be around 8-8 with a shot at a wildcard, but they probably could have been that without Favre.
Dunoo, if you're good at drafting, just can't see a 3rd round pick on a 38yr old QB that ain't going to be the difference between going deep in the playoffs and not.
There was talk today that Mangini and (whoever the GM is) felt that had to do something to keep their jobs, but others think the ownership loves Mangini and he could go 1-15 and be fine.
Jets fans? which is closer to the truth?

After MANGENIOUS made the playoffs 2 years ago there was a huge media splooge all over him and Tennanbaum(GM), and anything could have happened last year (and it did) and he would be fine.
The Jets were 4-12 last year, BUT, they had some completely ridiculous injuries, worst I can ever remember for the JEts injury-wise. Also there were at least 5 or 6 games that the Jets could have easily won if they had caught a few breaks, and probably 2-3 that they DEFINITELY should have won but blew it because they are the Jetd and that is my life. (I'm sure every team could say something like that though)
I thought the JEts were probably going to have between 7 and 9 wins THIS season based on the volume of their offseason moves and the fact that they really were not that bad last year, but with Favre instead of Chad I think 10 wins & a wild card is more than realistic.
But to answer your question, if the Jets went 1-15, pretty sure Mangini would be out. I don't think anybody could really survive two afwul seasons in a row in New York, especially if they were to have less wins then the prior season after spending 100+ million this offseason...

As Favre arrives, Jets cut ties with Pennington
Associated Press
NEW YORK -- Chad Pennington quickly became the odd man out once Brett Favre joined the New York Jets.
Pennington was released Thursday, ending the quarterback's eight-year, injury-plagued career with the Jets. He was expected to find a new home soon: the Minnesota Vikings and Miami Dolphins were mentioned as possible destinations.
"It's a bittersweet moment for us," general manager Mike Tannenbaum said early Thursday when announcing the trade for Favre.
"I have all the respect in the world for Chad as a person and a player," he said. "He gave his heart and soul to this organization for a long, long time. I really appreciate everything he has done."
A first-round pick in the 2000 NFL Draft, Pennington became the popular face of the franchise for several seasons and arrived in training camp competing with Kellen Clemens for the starting job.
The Jets jettisoned Pennington to clear salary cap space once they acquired Favre from Green Bay for a conditional draft pick.
The 32-year-old Pennington had three years, plus a team option year, remaining on his contract. He was due $4.8 million this season and his salary cap figure is $7.8 million.
Pennington ranks first in NFL history among quarterbacks with at least 1,500 attempts with a 65.6 completion percentage. He was often recognized as being a true leader in the huddle and an intelligent field general, but was dogged throughout his time in New York for his lack of arm strength.
Big things were expected from Pennington, who had a brilliant college career at Marshall. He beat out popular veteran Vinny Testaverde in 2002 and led the Jets to the playoffs, including a stunning 41-0 victory over Indianapolis.
The injuries began the following season, when he broke his left wrist in a preseason game against the Giants. He returned the following year and led the Jets within a game of the AFC Championship, but then underwent two rotator cuff operations in eight months.
Pennington's career was in doubt, but he bounced back and was the NFL Comeback Player of the Year after beating out Clemens, Brooks Bollinger and Patrick Ramsey for the starting job in 2006. He had his best all-around season, throwing for a career-high 3,352 yards while again leading the Jets to the playoffs and starting every game for the first time.
Coach Eric Mangini anointed him the starter the following offseason, but Pennington struggled mightily before being benched in favor of Clemens after Week 8.
Pennington was 1-7 as the starter last season, and Clemens went 3-5, but the veteran actually had the better season statistically. He threw for 1,765 yards and 10 touchdowns and nine interceptions; Clemens had 1,529 yards, five TDs and 10 interceptions in 10 fewer pass attempts.
Pennington had done a bit better than Clemens early in training camp, and was considered the favorite to open the season as the starter at Miami. Clemens, entering his third season, will now be the backup to Favre.

Also I love Mangini and I think even if somehow the Jets went like 4-12 this year he still would get at least another year. I don't see how they would go 4-12 though unless they are riddled with injuries, which is then an excuse on its own for keeping him.

Plus Ryan Grant caught some balls, is Thomas Jones really a receiving threat? You shouldn't really speak of what you don't know. Remember the '07 Packers had Favre and the '07 Jets had Pennington/Clemens.
Coles (missed 4 games with injury): 55 rec 646 yards 6TDs
Cotchery (missed 1 game): 82 catches, 1130 yards 2 TDs
Brad Smith: 32 catches 325 yards 2 TDs (ot to mention all the trick plays they run with him at QB and reverses and the like)
Thomas Jones: 28 catches 217 yards 1 TD (plus 1,100+ rushing yards)
Leon Washington: 36 catches, 317 yards (+400 rushing yards. Ultimate 3rd down screen back)
Chris Baker: 41 catches, 409 yards 3TDs
The Jets also vastly improved their O-Line and drafted Dustin Keller from Purdue to eventually become their new TE. They are really high on him
2007 Packers:
Driver (missed 1 game): 82 catches, 1048 yards, 2 TDs (SOOO much better than Cotchery right?)
Jennings (missed 3 games): 53 catches, 920 yards, 12 TDs
Lee: 48-575-6
Martin: 16-42-4
Jones: 47-676-2
Grant: 30-145-0
I mean yeah a little better for the Packers but really not much. Aside from the TD numbers pretty much the sameish and I think the Jets did win 9 less games so holla

I see the Jets improving with Favre, but this 10-6 talk is stretching it, in my opinion. Quite a few teams in the AFC caught bad breaks, and could have gotten a better record last season, so that's not really a factor.

Guitierez looked decent and the rookie QB (forgot him name) looked good, see him being groomed as the backup or maybe used as trade bait in a year or two (like the Packers always used to do).

Really can't believe still try to predict (and then bet on it) the NFL, it is impossible.
Did anyone really think last year that the Superbowl would be the 18-0 Patriots facing a Giants team that was regarded (by a few people on TPWW) as one of the misleading 10 win teams ever? Then the Giants beat the Patriots? Come on
Also pretty sure everyone had the Panthers as the "pick" in the NFC last year.

Titans are going backwards if anything. Bengals keep losing players to suspensions or crippling injuries. Ravens just lost one of the best left tackles of all time and age is starting to catch up to guys like Lewis and McAlister. Only team that is really getting better is the Bills, and they lost a lotta guys to injury last year too.

Alright. I haven't paid attention to anything in the offseason this year. But that makes it better, you get jaded when you look at teams in a player by player manner.
NFC West:
1. Seattle Seahawks I guess.
2. St. Louis Rams. Is Marc Bulger still their quarterback? They'll probably be 8-8 or so.
3. Arizona Cardinals. I don't think they will ever go above 500.
4. San Francisco 49ers. Isn't JT O'Sullivan going to be their starting quarterback this year? I know Frank Gore has been good and they have a couple of good linebackers, but this is a team that never seems to get things together.
NFC South:
1. Atlanta Falcons. The team that always finishes last the year before always finishes first. Knowing this division it will probably happen again.
2. New Orleans Saints. 9-7 team looking at a chance to be a wild card.
3. Carolina Panthers. Generic 6-10, 7-9 team.
4. Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They are always good one year and shit the next. This is their year to be shit.
NFC East:
1. Dallas Cowboys. Yup.
2. New York Giants. They will be one of those teams that look awful in the first half of the season but win like five games in a row and make the playoffs with a 9-7 or 8-8 record.
3. Philadelphia Eagles. Will be like 3-0 like they always are then 5-8 for the rest of the season.
4. Washington Redskins. Even though they have that quarterback that is doing well they will still find a way to suck.
NFC North:
1. Chicago Bears. One of those "surprise teams" I suppose.
2. Green Bay Packers. I doubt they will make the playoffs.
3. Minnesota Vikings. One of those teams that get hyped but don't live up to it.
4. Detroit Lions. Need I say more?
AFC West:
1. Denver Broncos. They seem like they could be pretty good this year.
2. Oakland Raiders. They've got some players.
3. San Diego Chargers. Norv Turner.
4. Kansas City Chiefs. Kansas City Chiefs.
AFC South:
1. Indianapolis Colts. I don't see this team losing the division, at least not this year.
2. Tennessee Titans. Why not?
3. Jacksonville Jaguars. Random shuffling.
4. Houston Texans. They are just "one of those teams".
AFC East:
1. New England. No one in that divison really has a chance.
2. New York Jets. Them and the Jets will be equally as bland.
3. Buffalo Bills. Them and the Bills will be equally as bland.
4. Miami Dolphins. 4-12.
NFC North:
1. Pittsburgh Steelers. 11-5.
2. Baltimore Ravens. They will make the playoffs for some reason.
3. Cincinnati Bengals. Eh.
4. Cleveland Browns. I kinda feel sorry for them, but this franchise just has loser written all over it.

Pennington to the Dolphins..
Evil Vito
08-09-2008, 12:36 PM
<font color=goldenrod>lol Dolphins. They draft John Beck with a second round pick last year, Chad Henne with a second round pick this year, and then sign Pennington so both guys are gonna ride the bench anyway.
Not exactly surprising seeing as Parcells drafted Pennington. But I thought Chad was gonna be a Viking.</font>
Kris P Lettus
08-09-2008, 12:39 PM
They need a "vet" though for a year or two to help their younger QBs..
Evil Vito
08-09-2008, 12:42 PM
<font color=goldenrod>I guess so...but they aren't exactly in a position to win anytime soon. I'm guessing we'll be seeing a Beck/Henne battle to see who gets to be the #2 QB and take over once the Dolphins fall out of it</font> :o
Jesus Shuttlesworth
08-09-2008, 01:20 PM
Well I don't know if they exactly expect either Beck or Henne to be the "QBs of the future" anyway...if they where that confident with Beck in the first place they wouldn't have used a 2nd rounder on Henne
I wouldn't be surprised if most of my predictions were wrong this year. What I'm trying to say is that, though you really never know what is going to happen, you pretty much know how about 60% of teams are going to do. You just never know which 60% it's going to be.
The thing that everyone does is base what they think is going to happen this year on what happened last year. "The Browns (or some team) were good last year, and they got some good new players. I think they are going to be better this year." There's too much of that type of thinking involved, and it tends to be false usually.
Triple A
08-09-2008, 02:24 PM
I don't think it tends to be false. It is a pretty logical way of thinking about it. There are usually like 2 or 3 teams that are completely surprising but for the most part it's an accurate way to look at it I think.

Yeah. I watch pretty much every Giants game too and "root for them". Like doesn't break my heart if they lose but I grew up watching them too so why would I root for like the Cowboys against them or some shit. I know a lot of people in NY hate the "other" NY team but I dunno, not a huge fan of that, besides baseball actually. Really kinda hate the Mets because Mets fans are giant dickheads.
OssMan

Triple A

I am not saying Yankees fans aren't dickheads b/c they def are, but Mets fans, I want to kill them. Mad obnoxious. Like any time the Mets win a game against the Yankees they are mad happy and have to like try to rub it in your face, and they think they are so cool for living in NY and not liking the Yankees and prefering the #2 team instead.

yeah, I remember one show they asked boomer and chris carter "would you rather be in the hall of fame or have a super bowl ring" and both said HOF, and someone else on the show I forget who laughed and said "spoken like 2 guys who have never worn a ring"...
The funny thing is, Boomer was right, until the Colts built up that Defense Payton was set to be the next Marino, no fault of his own, but those early years he had no defense and a team doesn't win like that. Now he has a full team.
VonErichLives

it's also funny how much Marino always hated the Pats, I think the only time he picked them was the SB they lost this year... which is kinda funny cause he used to destroy the patriots every year, especially in Miami the pats didn't win for like 20yrs.

The Meadowlands Sports Complex has issued new rules regarding alcohol and fan behavior.
Tailgate parties can only start five hours before New York Giants and Jets games instead of seven. Also, season ticketholders who are ejected from the stadium or arena will have their tickets revoked.
Last season, security at Gate D was increased at Jets games because hundreds of men would gather at halftime and demand that women expose their breasts. View-blocking banners will be hung on the spiral staircase to help eliminate the problem.
Unchanged is the halftime cutoff for alcohol sales
After seeing that, I went back to read the article Stima posted and she says:
“If it gets them in the seats earlier and out of the freezing parking lots a couple of beers earlier maybe, so be it. I promise I’ll put on as good a show as I possibly can.”
Halftime is ridiculous for alcohol cutoffs..
VonErichLives
08-12-2008, 06:36 PM
it says "unchanged" so I assume this is not a new rule for 1/2time.
not sure what it is at Gillette, I wanna say sometime in the 3rd...
Also, gilette I think they only start tailgating 4hrs before the game starts (thats when they open the lots).
The problem is the idiots who get too drunk ruin it for everyone else.
The having tickets revoked is how they do it at Gilette, there is such a waiting list if you do something stupid (or someone who gave/sold your tickets to) to get kicked out they pull your tickets.
