Nice, Nelson Figueroa tosses a complete game shutout after having awful luck all September despite pitching well. Mets bounce back from their sweep by the Nationals and sweep the Astros to end at 70-92.
When Wright and Santana went down in late August, I didn't think they'd even be able to make it to 70 wins. So it's a good note to end on. Bring on 2010.
I'll probably do a "Season Wrap-Up" post at some point.

Twins are 6 outs away from forcing a tiebreaker, which will be played on Tuesday due to the NFL getting the building on Monday.
The Yanks are expected to choose Schedule A and start on Wednesday. If you believe in momentum going into the playoffs, that could actually be an advantage for the Central winner, not even having to wait a full day for the next game.

Yeah, I think it has its advantages and disadvantages. The Yankees have to sit around for a couple days while the Central winner goes right into the series. Although the fact that both teams will go all out on that game is helpful to the Yankees who can actually set up their rotation and all that.
I was really pulling for the Twins to take the division so the Yanks can avoid Verlander but it really doesn't matter to me anymore. If anything, the Twins might be harder since they're on such a hot streak while the Tigers are stumbling.

Also, pretty crazy game for A-Rod today. 2 Hrs and 7 RBIs in one inning to get to 30 HRs-100 RBIs for something like the 12th straight year.

Daniel Murphy finishes up with 12 HR, 63 RBI, and a .266 BA
Honestly, considering how horrible he was for a couple of months, he got extremely hot at the end and was hot at the beginning. Not bad for a first full campaign that featured a position change as well.
I hope Mike Francesa can resist trashing every Mets fan who defends Murph, as he's done all season...going on about how Murph isn't a 1B on a championship team. Murph's numbers are pretty similar to Tino Martinez' first full season...I'd love to hear Mike say he would have benched Tino with those numbers as well.

What I mean is that Francesa always goes on about how you can't have a successful, championship caliber team with a guy like Murphy playing 1B, which is crap IMO. If they got solid hitters in LF and C, you can live with Murph batting 7th and improving more while playing adequate defense.

Tuesday, the Twins, then we go on and K.O. the Yankees in the ALCS...count on it!

BIRMINGHAM, Mich. -- Records show police responded to a "family trouble" call at the home of Detroit Tigers (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=det) first baseman Miguel Cabrera (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=5544).

A review of Birmingham Police Department records by The Detroit News indicates officers responded about 6 a.m. Saturday to Cabrera's suburban Detroit home.
The complainant was described as "Rosanna Cabrera." Cabrera's wife is Rosangel Cabrera.
Miguel Cabrera showed up at Comerica Park for Saturday's game against the Chicago White Sox (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=cha) with scratches on his face. He and team officials have declined comment.
A neighbor reported she saw officers put a man in one of three police cars in front of Cabrera's home. Records did not immediately indicate whether anyone was charged.
Chief Richard Patterson is expected to make a statement Monday.

Obviously they aren't a championship team right now, my point of contention isn't disputing that, it's disputing Francesa's opinion that having a power 1B is absolutely mandatory, which I think is silly.
He said on his NBC show last night that the Mets need a 1B that will hit them 35-40 HRs and they won't be able to put together a contender without that...not sure why it needs to be a 1B though, I'd take a 35-40 HR hitter in LF just as soon as I would at 1B...they need power any way they can get it. In fact, the only way they can get a 35-40 HR 1B is to trade for Adrian Gonzalez or Prince Fielder, and they don't have the chips for that. The only other option would be to re-sign Delgado which is a huge risk, 37 year olds with hip injuries are never a good sign

It's this guy's assessment that is so skewed. He's out to lunch. The Mets are not a championship team.
Tino (as you mentioned) never hit 35-40 HRs for the Yanks. They won a bunch of championships during his tenure.

Tino hit 44 HRs and 141 RBIs for the Yankees in 1997.
Yeah he had a couple years where he went berzerk. But his typical #`s were nothing like that. Also in '97 the Yankees lost to Cleveland(?) in the first round.
Supreme Olajuwon
10-06-2009, 09:57 AM
Yeah but in the 3 of the years they did win the WS, Tino had great numbers as well:
96- 25, 117
98- 28, 123
99, 28, 105
In fact, Tino led the team in RBIs in 96, 97, and 98.
Evil Vito
10-06-2009, 10:17 AM
Yeah, Tino churned out good power numbers later in his career, but his first full year was comparable with Murph's...if he had started his career with the Yanks instead of the M's with those numbers I wonder if Mike would have benched him like he said Murph should.
Hell, the Mets have historically had successful teams even without power at 1B. Keith Hernandez and John Olerud 4tw. Granted, they were defensive geniuses and Murph can't be considered that, but who knows...he played the position for basically the first time ever this year. Looks better at 1B than LF at least. :o

No, the Rockies are technically the 4 seed because they are the Wild Card. We finished with the best record in the NL, so we should play the wild card.
Wild Card teams finish with better records than division winners all the time.
It just depends on your division.
Look at the Red Sox. They're the AL wildcard and they finished with a better record than Tigers and Twins, and they're still fighting it out for the AL Central. 95 wins. Thats more than most teams in the playoffs, but thats the way the system works.
Rockies have more wins than the Cardinals.

I can't decide. Whoever wins this game - do they go into NY tomorrow with serious momentum, or wiped the fuck out?
Tigers win, we deal with fresh Verlander and Jackson. That's bad.
Twins win, we deal with beat up bats, but riding on big momentum. That's good and bad.

So, aside from Inge being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and the ump missing it, the Tigers have no one to blame but themselves. Why the hell was Laird given a bat in the bottom of the 12th with two outs when he was already 0-for-3 with runners in scoring position in the game? Had they run out of position players and I just didn't notice? Plus there's Raburn's blunder in left and countless blown opportunities at the plate by just about everybody.

Can't deny Sabathia broke the trend and had a good game tonight. Still, I'll reserve judgement until he has another start since it's the Twins and one instance doesn't negate a trend.

Angels are a threat on the basepath, they manufacture a lot of runs, but I just don't see them beating the Sox. I know the laws of averages would say that eventually they'll win some postseason games against the Sox but I think they're in the Angels heads.
Plus I don't think their starting pitching or bullpen can compete. They have some solid pitching, but it's really a core of a bunch of #3 starters. No real ace. I gotta like our chances with Lester and Beckett throwing on the road. Sox lineup will probably be way hotter for the playoffs too.
Emperor Smeat
