Yo Stima, Dodgers would be leading any division in the AL right now..lol I would hope so, they are playing terrible competition on a consistent basis. Only 2 teams in the NL right now have 40 wins, 6 in the AL with 40 or more

That's a little misleading. With Milwaukee's win tonight, there are 3 NL teams with 40 wins now, with San Francisco at 39 and Colorado and Florida at 38. Texas and the Angels are barely at that 40 win marker. It's not like there's some huge disparity between the two leagues' win total.
I'll give you that the AL is the better league, but it's not really fair to call the Dodgers' competition horrible when 2 of the NL's top 3 teams in the wildcard race are out of the West. At this point you could argue the West has been the best division in the NL after the entire Central crapped the bed over the past few weeks.

NL West may have a wildcard contender or two in it but if you put the 2nd place team in the NL West in the AL East right now they would be fifth.
NL Central isn't even the worst though, NL East this year is awful - standings wise at least. Mets are barely .500 right now and are only 1.5 games back from 1st

Actually, most articles I've read have said that the Cards overpaid for a rental player, as Perez was their closer of the future.
Would have loved to see the Mets get him but the Indians wanted Bobby Parnell and another minor leaguer...I really think/hope Bobby can turn it around, I hope his recent struggles have been due to a dead arm period.

It's hard to be optimistic when you are throwing out the kind of lineup they are. :o
As I've said, though...if they can limit their gap between them and the Phillies long enough for reinforcements to arrive after the AS break (Beltran and Reyes around or just after the AS break, Delgado hopefully not too long after that, Maine and Perez pretty soon, Putz and maybe even Wagner in August)...they've definitely got a shot.

Bobby Parnell's been requested by every team the Mets try to trade with. He's been bad lately, but still...do you really wanna trade your 24-year old, 96 MPH throwing set-up man for a bat that still might not even be enough? Omar's in a really tough spot.

Nyjer Morgan isn't a very good player, and Burnett's an meh reliever. Milledge is still young enough to have potential, which is more than you can say for Morgan. Hanrahan's got good stuff but it looks like he lost his control this year...a change of scenery probably does him good.

Ryan Braun up with the bases loaded against Johan Santana. After stupidly flailing at the first two pitches of the at-bat and barely fouling them off, he sends another low one into deep left over the head of Sheffield and off the wall. Pitcher Mike Burns scores from third, Corey Hart scores from second, and J.J. Hardy scores from first after the throw home gets away from the catcher. Braun takes a huge turn around third when he sees the ball get away and is stuck in no man's land. Santana (backing up home plate on the throw) fires the ball over to third to try to get Braun, but the ball sails over David Wright into left field and Braun scores easily.
Actually a double and an error, but essentially a Little League grand slam, where you just keep running while the other team throws the ball around the diamond. I am sure the play will be on SportsCenter (as well as F-Mart falling down in center two batters before).

I don't think the Mets should be written off just yet. You have 1/2 of your infield, 2/5 of your rotation, your CF, and your 8th inning guy on the DL (4 of them All Stars). And yet you're only 3 games out of 1st. In the past 5 games you've had 4 different guys batting leadoff.
Plus it looks like this is the most wide open NL Wild Card race there has been since it started in 95. Look at the teams in front of the Mets. The Giants, Rockies, Marlins, and Reds are all super young teams with a ton of question marks and very little knowledge about winning in September or October. And the Cardinals always look impressive but they often don't hit their stride. The Mets could very easily overtake all of them and the Phillies once they're healthy.
So buck up, buckaroo.

The injuries are a factor, no doubt. They still do have a chance, it's just these last 6 or so games have been so error-ridden, it's almost unwatchable. :o Seeing Johan Santana, a guy who has a chance at winning the NL Gold Glove now that Maddux is gone, throw the ball into the outfield did me in last night. :(

Wang to the DL.
Girardi says Hughes ain't gonna fill the spot, but names going around are Aceves, Mitre, or Albaladejo.
I think they said they don't wanna mess with the bullpen so I'd assume Hughes and Aceves are out. Which is kind of ridiculous considering they are our best two options by far. Seeing Mitre and Igawa pitching and making our bullpen useless on those days should be fun though.
I don't really understand since Hughes needs innings this year and there is an open spot in the rotation. They should stretch him out and put him back in the rotation.
I really hope it doesn't turn into Joba version 2 with Hughes.

Yeah, Howard making the team is pretty iffy considering how many first basemen were already on the roster. I don't think he makes it if he's not from St. Louis and his manager wasn't picking teams. Dunn should've made it for the sole purpose of competing in the Home Run Derby. Same goes for Russell Branyan.
It'll be interesting to see what happens with injury replacements. Usually more than one guy from the final ballot ends up getting in anyway due to injuries. The NL starting outfield alone may need 2 replacements, and at least 1.
Still trying to figure out how Jason Marquis got named to the game, too. He has 10 wins, but that's the only impressive number he has right now. He's literally not striking anyone out and is far from dominant. I realize that Charlie Manuel said he was putting an emphasis on pitchers who would be able to pitch in the game, but the fact that he made the team over a guy like Yovani Gallardo or Johnny Cueto is ridiculous.

Why do you hate K-Rod so much? He's only blown three saves - and of those, one was Castillo's fault and another the Mets ended up winning and he "closed" it out the next inning unofficially. So really he's only cost the Mets one game this year. If anything, he's the most deserving Met in there as Beltran has missed time, Wright has been K'ing a TON, and Johan's had a few bad starts laced with bad luck.
Anyway the NL rosters are pretty stupid in terms of the bench. 3 1B on the bench? Everyone seems to be calling for Pujols to play the whole game (or at least more than half) in St. Louis, so that means the other guys will just be used as pinch hitters. Howard really shouldn't be there at the expense of some of the guys left off...but Charlie Manuel prolly did it as a favor.

I have always hated K-Rod. His stupid delivery and him falling off the mound half way to first base after every pitch and his "aggressiveness" that just seems so stupid. And that one time he was in the middle of blowing a save with the Angels and threw a bad pitch or something and swatted at the ball with his glove when the catcher threw it back and ended up allowing the winning run from 3rd to score. Hate him so much. And those stupid goggles he used to wear. Just one of those players I can't stand.

dam, was hoping for a Vito blowup about the Church deal :(
Nah. The Mets offense has been absolutely putrid. Three shutouts in the last five days. They sat on their hands when they first got injured all over, because every team asked for a shitload from them because they were desperate. And after lately, that demand only went up.
So, it's now basically pointless to trade prospects for any big bat...because one big bat isn't going to fix this team right now, and their farm system is barren enough as it is. Francoeur is a project. I don't know how it will work out.
I have no doubt the guy will drive me crazy since he's shown zero signs of plate discipline or growth in five years in terms of his free-swinging. And I read somewhere that in all of his years in professional baseball, he's only put up an OBP of .350 or higher once...in rookie ball, at age 18. He's 25 now.
I dunno. Like I said, I was definitely a Ryan Church fan...but if the Jeff Francoeur of 2005/6/7 can come back, the Mets win this deal.

Nelson Cruz added to the AL All Star team, replacing Torii Hunter.
Cruz also threw his name into the hat for possible HR Derby participating. Mauer and Inge are the only two confirmed AL guys so far.

According to the formula of Pettitte as of late, this should be a good game for him.
Hopefully little Weaver shouldn't be a problem for us.

Angel Berroa only has to drive over the RFK bridge to find work. Mets sign him after the Yankees DFA him.

Nice win tonight. Jerry Manuel was on the money. While the offense has been bad, the pitching has been even worse. The offense just needs to get a few timely hits to have a chance to win so long as the pitching is superb like it was tonight.
Hopefully they can wrap up the first half by winning a series...something they haven't done in over two weeks. :o

I'm confused. A Brewers starting pitcher left the game with a lead and the Brewers managed to keep the other team from scoring. Is that allowed?

LOL Joe Maddon did the same thing. Pedroia is out of the ASG so rather than bring in Kinsler, he's bringing in Carlos Pena.
At least Pena was another Final Vote guy, though.

Thankfully once it gets to extra innings, I know it means an automatic loss for the Blue Jays. Some type of crazy MLB rule I guess.

Yep, he touched the ball with his mask (he was holding his mask in his hand). You aren't allowed to touch the ball with any piece of clothing not in its normal spot.
Guess that explains why nobody has tried to catch a ball in his hat during a blowout. :(

Mets nearly squander a 7-0 lead. Woulda been a crippling defeat heading into the break.
Glad to get a series win, and they ended their power drought. A bit deflating that the Phillies have stopped losing at home, so the Mets really gained no ground at all, and are still 6.5 out...but eh. Hopefully after a couple days off they can play respectably until the calvary arrives.

Carlos Pena, Nelson Cruz, Brandon Inge, and Joe Mauer represent the AL for the Home Run Derby.
Meh. Pena just got added today and Inge a couple days ago. I'm willing to assume that nobody on the AL side wanted anything to do with it this year since the roster got released this late.

AL hasn't dominated the ASG for a few years now...they barely squeak by. That being said, I'm guessing AL wins another close one and a Phillies player strikes out in a pinch-hitting role to end the game, making Manuel look like a huge homer.
Thankfully, the home field advantage rule hasn't made a difference since it started as the WS has gone 3-3 since it was put into effect. Of course, two of the NL's WS wins were depressing for me as I hate the Phillies and seeing the Cards win the WS just made me think "if only the Mets coulda won Game 7..."
And in other news, the Nats finally fire Manny Acta

Thanks to Nick Swisher blowing it with the bases loaded against the Angles the Red Sox increase their lead to 3 in the AL East. Got a feeling its gonna stay tight all the way down to the end though.

Oliveer made a good play on swisher....I attribute the loss more to A Rod grounding into a double play with the bases loaded the inning before...or Teix whiffing with them loaded right before that. They went from bases loaded with no outs, to scoring nothing....

The only problem with that idea is nobody knows exactly how far back steroids in baseball has been occurring. You could go by stats or by player appearances but if the San Diego Chargers of the early 1960s are considered the 1st roid team, you have to figure it is possible steroids or enhancements could be older. That and it seems every few years new stuff that was once legal to use becomes illegal in sports.
Best would be to just use an asterix or have a note saying this record occured during a known steroid era.

Yeah, Mauer has been the best player in the AL. But factoring in that Mauer missed 25 games and that the Twins are in 3rd place, I thought Bay was more deserving.

Michael Young slides into the starting 3B spot (no late inning heroics from him then) and Chone Figgins has been added to the roster.
