So Smoltz strikes out 9 in 5 scoreless innings in his first start for the Cards. :wtf:

Why are you shocked at this? He clearly wasn't happy playing in Boston, let alone for an A.L. team...I think the Red Sox had heaped too much in the way of lofty expectations on Smoltz (a local guy from my hometown, btw), and now he's back in the N.L. and playing with the St. Louis Cardinals, where I believe he will flourish in his late career. I mean you mentioned the 9 K's in 5 innings, but that doesn't even include sitting down 7 in a row to set a Cardinals record for most consecutive K's. I believe he will prove to all the doubters out there that he can still be DAMNED GOOD in any pitching situation, whether starting, short, middle, or long relief, as an 8th inning-er, or as a closer. But I suppose we will all find out in the final month or so.

DAMN iNATOR

Oh, also mad frustrated that no matter what, the damned Tigers can't seem to get any more of a lead than 2.5 Games with 39 games left for them to play...they really should be at least 4 or 5 ahead right now, IMO. They just haven't had any offensive production lately, and plus it will be an immense help to Leyland to have Zumaya back whenever that happens as it will give him 12 and not 11, pitchers to work with.

SammyG

explain.
Just watch highlights or something. Ball hit down the line, looks like a double, manny chasing it, doesn't get it, runs into the wall, while ball deflects off to center field... he thinks Kemp is gonna run to get it, but Kemp doesn't do that. So Manny hangs out for a couple seconds, then when he sees Kemp isn't going for it, he runs and throws into third, and the guy has a triple.

Any other fielder would honestly had cut that ball off for a single....

Then he had one more fuck up , don't remember.

<font color=goldenrod>So Santana is out for the year, and ESPN is coming out that his elbow was an issue even back in 2007 and that was the reason that the Yankees and Red Sox balked at the trade.

Evil Vito
08-26-2009, 12:51 AM
<font color=goldenrod>Yep, Putz was slated to pitch in a Class-A rehab game tonight...then he was scratched from it out of the blue and is now out for the season. I feel like the Mets are just giving up on rehabbing their players, not that I blame them...but fuck.

David Wright is expected to be back in September...and Beltran is hoping to get some games in before the end, but other than that...nada. The 2009 Mets will really live in infamy I think. Has there ever been a team that has lost their FIVE best players to the DL at the same time (three of them for several months)? The baseball Gods really wanted to make sure the Mets did nothing this year.

And to Boomer - while I'm a little concerned, I am slightly optimistic about Johan because it sounds like and injury he's been pitching through it for a while now...they just figure there is no point in making him push it when they are out of contention. If the Mets were healthy and in the race he'd probably still be in the rotation, ready to put off surgery until after the end of the year, like he did last year.</font>

Evil Vito
08-28-2009, 12:46 AM
<font color=goldenrod>lol so Chris Carter was slated to be one of the two PTBNLs headed from the Red Sox to the Mets in the Wagner deal...so the Red Sox needed to put him through waivers first. The Yankees claimed him, and Boston had no choice but to pull him back...so now Carter can't be traded to the Mets until the offseason.

Literally can't think of one reason for the Yanks to do that other than to be like "lol fuck you" to the Sox and Mets...Boston now needs to carry him on the 40-man until the offseason where he will most likely do nothing but sit on the bench as a September call-up, meanwhile the Mets would have likely given him playing time but can't since he has to stay in Boston for the rest of the year. <font color=goldenrod>I'd fucking LOVE for the Mets to get Carl Crawford. Most teams probably could offer better prospects...but if the opportunity presented itself I'd jump at it. Not only would Citi Field be a great place for him to hit, but they need speed-burners in that outfield.

My T&R (http://www.fannation.com/truth_and_rumors/mine)

After two days of non-stop jokes -- all at his expense -- David Wright (http://www.fannation.com/tags/show_tag/3827) ditched his Great Gazoo helmet Thursday and went back to the standard-issue one he has worn throughout his career. Wright first wore the new Rawlings S100 when he returned from a concussion Tuesday against the Rockies (http://www.fannation.com/tags/show_tag/59). He wore a slightly different version of the new, more protective helmet during a pinch-hit at-bat Wednesday. By Thursday morning, he had had enough.

I don't blame Wright for making the change since the Dark Helmet version looked horrible. But at the same time kind of bad that the ridicule was soo much he's willing to go back to the original helmet instead of something that could protect him more.

<font color=goldenrod>Sheffield is "extremely close" to being shut down for the rest of the season. Omar refused to trade him to the team that claimed him (who I'm pretty sure was either the Giants or Rockies), and instead they get nothing for the guy and he's barely played at all since the non-move. Little things like that are what annoy me most about Minaya.

Although I like Jerry, he does make some curious lineup decisions. Right now, I'm thinking Josh Thole and Omir Santos should be handling all of the catching for the rest of the year, as the Mets have bigger needs to fill next year so you may as well see what those two guys can bring to the table. But today, Brian Schneider is out there, bringing his .185 batting average, against a lefty to boot. Thankfully only 26 or so games left in this dismal season.</font>

<font color=goldenrod>Glad to see a great game from Murphy yesterday, driving in all 4 Met runs. His season numbers don't seem terribly impressive when looked at as a whole, and he certainly didn't wind up as the electric number 2 hitter I thought he would be, at least not this season (not that they could afford to continue batting him 2nd when Reyes got injured)...but he had a couple of really tough months when pitchers adjusted to him, and it seems like he's finally made his own adjustments.

Hope he can finish up the year strong, because he's most likely gonna be back at 1B in 2010 (no way they can move him back out to LF). I envisioned him batting around .280 or so in his first full season, and he's gonna fall short of that mark but considering he had to be bumped down the order I don't think it's that bad. Francesa stills rips into him and declares him a huge bust every time somebody mentions his name. Fat fuck.</font>

<font color=goldenrod>lol the Mets' magic number for being eliminated in the Wild Card is 2. They are likely going to be eliminated from the Wild Card before the division. The Royals are in that boat already, they are out of the Wild Card and one more loss from them or a win by the Tigers, White Sox, or Twins puts them out of the division.</font>

Speaking of Ichiro, he needs 4 more hits to break the record for consecutive seasons with at least 200 hits with 9. He and Wee Willie Keeler have each done it in 8 straight seasons.

Esmil Rogers making his first start today is a bit worrying

however I just read an article about how his father wouldn't come see him play until he made it to the major leagues so I'm quite happy for him

Iichiro, has + 3,100 hits or so playing in Japan and the MLB. Think he can surpass rose's numbers?

He can easily meet or surpass Rose's number, but it doesn't really surpass it in any real sense because of the different leagues. It won't be recognized.

I'm not neccessarily saying the Japanese hits are lesser, or don't count, but it's just a bit of a stretch.

He definitely could have reached the number had he been playing in MLB from the start.

As for Jeter, no I don't think he will beat Rose's record. He's great, and he will pass 3,000, but he's a bit old to be on any pace for over 4,000.

He'd have to average 200 hits a season for the next 8 seasons, assuming he plays to age 43.
Of course, he could conceivably average less than that, but he'd have to play well into his forties.
