Deportivo had the likes of Naybett, Makaay and Djalminha back then. And Tristan was on top form.
Naybett and Tristan still play for them and our good players still, not sure about Djalminha but i think he's still there. They still have players like Andrade/Valeron&Luque though. But i wont deny it was our defensive mistakes that fucked the match up for us.

I miss Larsson.:(
Do you think he will ever come back to Celtic?
No chance. He said he wanted to finish his career in a hot place or something like that, and Barcelona is perfect for him, he was just unlucky last year with a knee injury.

Well Naybet plays for Spurs now, and Tristan hasn't been good for a number of years but losing to Depor is nothing really embarrasing, they're like Newcastle i suppose. I didn't see any of the games but it just sounds like the manner in which you went out (defensive errors by the sounds of it) which should be annoying.
Figo has joined Inter, and Jenas could well be leaving Newcastle, with Tottenham interested because they obviously don't have enough central midfield players :|

Real Sociedad came 2nd in the Liga a few years ago, look where they are now. Valencia won it a couple years back, look what's happened to them. Depor winning the league was like Everton finishing 4th, they had a better year than normal and played above themselves - plus they had some different players then. And Newcastle's team is full of internationals :|
Given
Carr
Boumsong
Babayaro
Jenas
Emre
Dyer
Bowyer (long time ago but still)
Parker (ok only the one cap or so but I'd be surprised if he plays regular if he doesn't get into a squad)
Shearer (retired yeah but he could probably still get in in an emergency)
NUFC fans need to wake up and stop deluding themselves. Your club is in the shits. Freddy Sheppard has sold you all out and your defence is thinner than Alan Shearer's hair. There is very little chance of you making the top six this season considering the competition for European places.
Unless serious signings are made in defence and a new striker is brought into the club things are not going to improve. Souness is going to kill your team just like he liked mine ten years ago. Be prepared for a long, barron spell and remember the good old days when you were 12 points clear and the country loved you. Now you'll be lucky to get 12 points from the first 6 games and the country looks at you like a laughing stock.

TL, seriously do you honestly think Owen will go to newcastle, do you honestly think they bid for Rooney, do you honestly think they asked about Viduka?
The answer is no to all. They, like every other team in any league are using the big name tactics to try and sell more season tickets/shirts/merchandise. Owen will not go to newcastle purley because they arnt consistant enough for him. I dont mean result wise I mean as they arnt constantly in the champions league. If Owen comes back he will go to United or Arsenal.
Newcastle are not the biggest team in the northeast, if you go by local fans with season tickets within a 10 mile radius you will find Boro are. If you go by stadium capacity then Newcastle are, If you ask The Mackum then Sunderland are. If you go by results then last season Boro are.
Your club is in a mess on and off the pitch and now Jenas is unhappy. So back to what I said before ......... JENAS for Boro ?????? haha

Naybett and Djalminha don't.
Also, Deportivo's squad all apparently hated each other last year and seemed to quite regularly fight (with the coach as well) on the training ground. Luque wants out, Tristan has talked about wanting out. Messed up team.
They fell apart four years ago when they sold us Slavisa Jokanovic.

You have totally missed the point of my posts.
Firstly, what i meant about Owen was, he had more of a chance of being attracted to us than you. And we have the money to bring players like him, hey did you buy Emre and Parker? Erm lets see, NO!The reason also why we bidded for Rooney was something to do with our chairman(being the criminal shit that he is) knowing Rooneys agent, and Man Utd were always going to get him, but the agent wanted more money from the transfer so he contacted our chairman to make a high bid first, which would force Man Utd to rush their bid and make a higher one, and so the 'bidding war' began. We were never seriously after him.It was for no other purpose than Rooneys agent, i think Kenny Dalglish was invovled to but i don't remember how, but thats how i remember the story.
Thirdly, football fans only talk about the short term. over history we have won more than you, you have won one fucking trophy. Thats it. I think about the long-term of things, unlike most dumbass football fans.(and yes, i am talking about you)
Finally, yes our club is a mess. Do you read my posts you stupid retard?I have already said our organization is shocking/our chairman is a criminal. And Shepherd has denied Jenas has asked for a transfer, i think its Jenas's agent trying to get him a move to one of the top four clubs.

Wow, i didn't know that. That sounds completely like us.I forgot Naybett was at spurs now, dunnow here djalminha has gone, i always thought of him as a deportivo player.
And by the way to anyone who's overreacting to my comment about we could do some serious damage, i said that if we get the striker we need then we could do some damage, but as of right now teams are just isolating alan shearer, so it doesn't look good. I predict Arsenal will win 5-0 against us on the opening day.:( :(

I doubt you'll see a side play as well as that and lose 4-1. The ref was generally shit, we got a few cheap free-kicks, and then the 2nd penalty, though as someone who normally says 'you shouldn't put your arm out' i can't and won't have many complaints about that. Shouldn't have let that affect us as badly as we did though.
Still optimistic though :D Mackem's lads didn't make a great start last season and West Brom got spanked 4-1 on the opening day 2 years ago and came up.

How many times did a ball over the top or a through-ball (from the half way line no less) catch out Arsenal's defence? Were they even interested in man marking? In a game where Drgoba can score a brace, you know that youre defence has problems.

Drogba is unplayable when he's in that kind of form. I think he has loads of goals in him if he gets his touch and finishing right, as he did at Marseille. Big "if" though. He tore teams apart on his own that season in Europe.
Drogba is a great target main and a top diver, thats the two things Jose likes about him, I love him as he is great at his job and is really good at making assists too.

On a slightly more interseting note:
Ref says sorry to the fans
Aug 8 2005
By Evening Gazette
A German referee who admitted fixing football matches has apologised to Boro fans for testing his scam on the club.
Robert Hoyzer, 25, said he tested a money-spinning match rigging plan when Boro lost 3-1 to Hansa Rostock in a pre-season friendly in Germany last summer.
He claimed it was the first fixture where he deliberately intervened with decisions to influence the game in an experiment to see how easy it was to affect a result.
At the time, Boro fans' websites were swamped with claims that the referee was dodgy. Hoyzer, who later admitted 'fixing' a number of German league and cup games, has now publicly apologised to Teesside supporters.
"I'm very sorry and I hope in spite of this that they (Boro fans) will still keep travelling away to watch their team," he said in an interview this weekend.
"Once again I would like to offer my profuse apologies to the fans."
Hoyzer admitted fixing a number of matches in Germany after he was arrested in January. He could now face criminal charges that could see him jailed for up to ten years.
Rob Nichols, editor of Boro's Fly Me To The Moon fanzine, said: "In all my time supporting Boro, this is the most bizarre story I have ever heard.
"It is like something out of a comic. His apology isn't good enough though. It is amazing to think that someone could use our friendly to try this out."
It is claimed Hoyzer was receiving payments from a Croatian betting syndicate.
Hoyzer registered as a referee in 2003 but his career came to an abrupt end in January 2005.
He was suspected of betting on a German Cup tie between regional league side Paderborn and Bundesliga club Hamburger SV on August 21, 2004, which Paderborn won 4-2.
He resigned as a referee and was banned for life by the German Football Association.

You are a stupid little retard. How many times do you hear people saying 'newcastle is a big club' compared to 'middlesborough are a big club'?
Sheffield Wednesday are still a big club, wimbledon no longer exist in the way they did before. So they don't count because there new clubs have no history.
And yes it was me who said you won the trophy, wow, so what?I was using what you've done in recent history in the argument. I was saying that you don't become a big club overnight, you do it over a PERIOD OF TIME. Is that so hard for you to understand?Boro are a mediocre club when it coems to rep/history and whatever else. Newcastle top them as far as the term 'big club' is cocnerned, ask any journalist, ask any 'football expert' they will say exactly the same thing.
Wake up to reality mate, its a harsh world.:)

Yes there it is, yet again you refer to the history of the club. TL why dont you go jump off the tyne bridge and die you stupid fuckin inbred gordie piece of shite!
If you actually read my interpretation of what I class as a 'big club' you will see newcastle fall well short of this criteria (as do sunderland & boro).
Yet again I have to tell you it doesnt matter what your team did back in the day as it has FUCK ALL to do with how good they are now!
The best team in the northeast by far last year was not newcastle, sunderland or boro, it was hartlepool.
Now go take your thumb out of your arse and learn some football knowledge you fucking dicknose!
LOL,this is what you asked me to read :
The North-East
The north-east of England has experienced some exciting times in football, but most of that excitement was an age ago.
Newcastle United are perhaps the biggest club in the north-east of England. They last won the league championship in 1927, although they were strong title contenders in the 1995-96 and 1996-97 seasons and finished runners-up both times - in 1995-96 they led for most of the season by a comfortable margin before being overhauled by Manchester United. The last major trophy to grace the St James's Park boardroom was the 1969 UEFA Cup, and no domestic trophies have been lifted by the club since the 1955 F.A Cup
Yeh last league title of the 'PERHAPS' biggest club in the northeast was in 1927 and last lifted a cup in 1955, to quote again from what you asked me to read, i give you :
The north-east of England has experienced some exciting times in football, but most of that excitement was an AGE AGO.
So acording to this, winning a trophy is not exciting. Is this even an english artical? are you even english? Do you support newcastle based on this artical???

Don't know how Newcastle are any bigger than Boro. Nobody outside the North East of England gives a toss about either :p

Surprising how the number of fans turning up at Rhinos and Tykes games has increased though.

LOL, Doink, your ridiculous. Did you not see the part 'newcastle are perhaps the biggest club in the north east?"
And now iot's time to slice your argument up till it no longer exists, you said:
"The best team in the northeast by far last year was not newcastle, sunderland or boro, it was hartlepool."
HA, you are talking about the best team where as i am talking about the biggest club. There is a huge difference between the two. if you want to say who the best team in the north east last year, the newcastle would be last on the list. But that is not part of my argument, Newcastle may not have the BEST TEAM but we are still the BIGGEST CLUB in the north east. If boro or sunderland have a success over a period of time that gets past what weve done, then they will be bigger clubs than us, but so far they haven't done that.
You also said:
"Yet again I have to tell you it doesnt matter what your team did back in the day as it has FUCK ALL to do with how good they are now!"
And yet again i'm telling you it does matter, fuck sake.Best team/big club are two different things that your getting confused with .
You also said:
"So acording to this, winning a trophy is not exciting. Is this even an english artical? are you even english? Do you support newcastle based on this artical???"
I have supported newcastle for ten years you stupid retard. How does that article say that winning trophy is not exciting?Funny you should say i'm not english when you can't even spell properly.

I'm pretty sure liverpool fans would still turn up.But your right football fans are fickle, i don't think i'm one of those though. Look at what Newcastle have been through these last ten years and then try saying i'm not loyal. If i could get a season ticket i would, but it would take forever for me to get one because the season ticket waiting list is so fucking long.

Firstly, I've lost no argument as you are a prick who doesnt understand anything so I gave up trying to educate you.
Secondly, there are more interesting things happening in the world of football other than you thinking that you support a big team, an example of this is:
Francesco Coco's proposed loan switch to Newcastle United has been scrapped.
The Internazionale defender has been training with Graeme Souness's side and even figured in the pre-season friendly with Yeading.
Souness ran the rule over the Italian with a view to completing a long-term loan agreement with Inter.
However, United were unable to reach a satisfactory conclusion to their negotiations and the left back is scheduled to return to Milan.

Jose Mourinho and Ashley Cole have both lost their appeals against the Premier League's 'tapping up' verdict, but have seen their fines reduced.
After a hearing in central London, Mourinho and Cole saw their guilty verdicts upheld but both had their fines cut to £75,000.
That signifies a major reduction for Chelsea boss Mourinho who was initially hit with a £200,000 sanction.
Cole has had his financial punishment reduced by 25 percent having originally been ordered to pay £100,000.
"In regard to the appeals by Ashley Cole and Jose Mourinho, the Premier League appeals committee has reminded themselves of the evidence in both cases and received submissions from the respective legal representatives," read a Premier League statement.

Apart from that friendly against England, when the Spanish lads passed rings around them.
Any team who can boast Xavi Hernandez and Xabi Alonso in central midfield has a chance. They can just go 1-0 up then keep the ball for the rest of the game.
Nah, no point even talking about Spain winning it, they'll only blow it again. Though to be fair, they were screwed against South Korea in 2002.
England have a great chance of winning it next year, or would do if they had a manager with some tactical and motivational know-how.

Fuck sake, we should've won that game, they were shit
We made so many simple little errors that if we'd not made, we would've buried them 5-0. We had so many good things about the performance, but no killer touch. We shoved Cisse out on the wing, when he should've been in the middle, and we took off Morientes when we need his presence.
Lord only knows why we are selling Baros, we better be getting Owen, because there is no excuse for selling him.
We need a right winger signed and sealed by next saturday, and we certainly need a centre back, because as great as Hyypia is in the air and at tackling, his lack of pace is gonna be a liability by the end of the season.

Did Jenas get the ball - Yes. Did he take him from behind - No. Was it two footed - No. Could the Ref even see - No.

Arsenal totally dominated the possession, but rarely looked threatening - like the Chelsea game. Arsenal have problems when the opposition parks the bus in front of the goal, and I couldn't see a goal coming.
Aliaksandr Hleb was outstanding, and has already settled into the team - he could've scored too. Surely, he has to start against Chelski.

Whats up with all the hate for wigan in this thread? They were unlucky and played well, so what if they're supported well financially?I don't see why that should be held against them, they have a good manager i think. The only thing i hold against them is that most of the fans aren't real football fans, but that is nothing to do with the team, i hope they do well.
As for newcastle, i didn't see much of the game today(just some of the highlights) but from what ive heard the ref once again showed us that the refs do infact give decisions in favour of the big three in the premiership, it's so obvious these days it not even funny anymore. I'm glad it wasn't a 5-0 thrashing or anything though.

I've got nothing against Wigan as a team either, they did well and were unlucky in the end, but it's the fact that they gained so many "fans" just because they're in the premiership. They probably more than doubled their average attendance from last year, and i'd have thought watching your side rape teams on the way to promotion for lower prices wouldn't be so much worse than that.
But yeah, they're not as terrible a side as people make out, certainly won't go down as easily as most have said.

OK me and TL were discussing this in a topic that was pretty offtopic, so I'm bringing it here. Here was the last reply
Nah it would totally destroy the structure of the game in this country and people would lose interest in football if every team was in one league, there is already too many games anyway so that would be impossible considering the demands of the fitness levels on the players. Would you change something that has worked for over a 100 years?
But yes there are only 4 teams that can realistically win the league, but that's the way its always been. And it makes the teams more competitive when it comes to the European cups. When people say there were times when anyone could win the league, they're talking rubbish. I hope someone who thinks that can tell me exactly when that time was because i sure as hell can't think of when it was.
Btw i just noticed how totally off-topic we are. Maybe we should continue this in pm or the sports forum?
I guess you are right but I don't see how it is working. There are tons of teams, yet only 4 can win.
Well what I don't get, is if only 4 teams have a chance, then what hapens to the other 34982947 teams? No doubt nobodys going to want to see a team who has no chance of "winning it all". Wouldn't they lose fan support, lose money, and if you're losing money what is the point of even having the team? It makes no sense.

Well what i didn't mention before was that, the top four teams get a place in the Champions League, the 4th spot is usually the one that mid/lower-table teams are after, everton finished 17th(one place above the relegation zone)the season before last and finished 4th last season, so if they qualify into the CL they will get about £30m or something i think, depending on how far they get that will determine how much of that money they will get.
Just incase i didn't make that bit clear btw the 3rd and 4th place teams have to play one match to qualify for the CL.
Then the 5th and 6th place teams qualify for the UEFA cup which is another european cup, only lower in status/money but it's good enough for the mid/lower table teams.
Obviously teams will lose money, but they do get a certain amount, but if you don't finish high enough you don't deserve the same amount of money as the champions do you?As for support, usually if teams go down they lose SOME support naturally, but most premiership teams sell out week in/week out. There are some well supported teams in the lower leagues, even non league football gets appreciation.I support Hendon who play in the Ryman Premier league for example. I also support newcastle in the premiership even though we havent won anything for about 50 years, and i still would even if we got relegated.
With all due respect to NF, do you think you are seriously going to convince any American sports fan our league system is better (even though it totally is)?
Londoner
08-15-2005, 08:36 PM
Also, its about building your squad up, the depressing thing at the moment is that Chelsea have a Russian billionaire who brought thme a couple of seasons ago, and they can spend as much money as they want and surprise surprise they won the prmeiership last year aswell as the league cup, it wont last though because everything falls eventually.
There are also other competitions for lower league clubs which i didn't mention, and they can get money from fa cup/league runs to, there's always a few shocks in the cups when lower league teams somehow beat the premiership teams, but i ain't hiding from the fact that there are deginately some teams struggling for survival, some have even collapsed. Most are insecure though.Ther eisn't really anything you can do about it, it's mainly due to ITV fucking up football finances in this country. They stupidly splashed out loads of money on the leagues below the prmeiership and though everyone would buy there new digital thing like sky have to see it, the clubs spent the money before they even ahd it and that's mainly why they're insecure financially.

What i meant about the clubs/states thing was that there are less states than clubs, a club can be set up really easily in the tiniest place possible, yet a state is one big place. Therefore that allows us to have more clubs. But yeah the thing you brought up is also true.
Mr. Monday Morning
08-16-2005, 06:27 AM
There are still some states without NFL teams. The owners just generally go where they think they can get the highest revenues, hence more teams on the coasts (2 for NY, 3 in Florida, 3 in California)
But yeah, America = 250m population, 32 teams
England (and Wales I guess) = 60m population, 92 professional teams. And then there's the conference, and the conference feeder clubs, and then the ones below them...etc.

NF, I support one of those teams that has no chance of winning the league so maybe I can help a bit.
Two seasons ago we got promoted to the Premiership from Division 1 and in our first season our main target was to just stay up for another season. By staying up, for us it was nearly as good as winning the league was for Arsenal that season.
Its all about expectations. Arsenal, Man U and Chelsea have lots of money so their fans expect them to win the league. My team was new to the league so we expected to stay up, we achieved that and we were very happy with our season, even though we finished no where near the top and lost a lot of games.
The 20 clubs in the Premiership are given a lot of money from Sky TV for their TV rights. This revenue is A LOT more than the leagues below the Premiership get, so just by being in the premiership, even if you finish 17th every season (the lowest you can finish without being relegated) you make a lot of money.
After staying up a few times, this money can be revinvested and the squad can be improved slowly and you can start to aim slightly higher. Instead of just staying up, maybe push for a UEFA cup spot, then a Champions League spot etc.
Almost every town and city in the country has atleast one team and the shit ones (like my team :D) tend to rely more on the support of local people and fans from the city and surrounding area. Where as the big, successful teams like Man U, Chelsea, Arsenal that have a chance of winning the league often have supporters that have never been to a game and live hundreds of miles away (not all of them, they do have a lot of local supporters too) and they get labled "glory supporters" who only support the team because they're big and successful.
So yes, the more succesful you are, the more fans you have but even the shittiest, smallest clubs have a few supporters just because they live locally.

No, Bolton are shit with dickhead fans and a dickhead manager who nearly ran me over and dickhead players who only ECG likes because he loves dickheads.
Spurs are Arsenal's rivals. Spurs fans are dickheads too though.
I might start supporting Bolton. They signed Nakata

My mate is a spurs fan but he's alright, though his brother is abit of a dickhead. It's funny hearing them go on about how they will qualify for europe though, my friend thought they would finish in the champions league spot last year.

Most fans do big up ther own teams though, its a bias opinion as they think 'o we've signed (insert player here) and he'll get us 20 goals this season, so we'll defo get into europe this year' while forgetting that they have a crap defence and no strength indepth should they get injuries.
On a seperate note, transfer news is:
Newcastle are set to put in a late bid for Fredi Kanoute who is in talks with Saville.
Carvahalio is unhappy he didnt play on sunday
Boro are in talks with Abdel Xavier
West Ham have signed David Bellion on loan.

Kanoute has already signed for Sevilla on a four-year deal.
Players are always unhappy when they don't play, that isn't news.
Xavier is shit.
And so is Bellion, he isn't even fit enough yet.

That sounds so much like my friend who supports spurs, I used to be like that, but then i woke up to reality. The depth of the squad is definately key, that's why teams go on good&bad runs and the top teams stay consistant through out the season. Everton got lucky last season with injuries, so that proves that most of the teams are good enough if they stay fit. I bet spurs finish 8th this season.
John Terry gets skinned by fast players all the time. He's just lucky he has a fast black athlete in William Gallas to sort him out, and a beast of a goalkeeper in Petr Cech.
Wouldn't say all the time, but he does sometimes. Thats why I prefer Gallas to your boyfriend, and it's good to see he has started to drop him in favour of Gallas, as he was shit from Feb - May and doesn't deserve a place at the moment.

Just a couple of points:
I enjoy watching great players, Nakata is a great player.
I do also enjoy pornography featuring small Chinese women of indeterminable age.

Nakata was the shit back in the day - hopefully he'll recreate that at Bolton even though I don't like Bolton at all.
And lol at Carvalho going off on one.

He just finds new ways to plumb the depths doesn't he?
Still, never mind. Kenny Miller scored
And he played probably his best game for us either. Nigel Quashie was his usually awesome self too.
It was totally worth us losing two goals in the last 7mins just so Rab Douglas NEVER plays another game for us again.

hahaha good old Rab, and the keeper we signed as competition conceded 6 against Pompey's reserves.
Pretty abysmal from England, complete lack of passion from all but Ashley Cole and Wayne Rooney, and Joe Cole at a push.

Douala from Sporting Lisbon, he put it down to not being able to play european football coz he's cup tied, roughly translated to we didnt offer enough money!
Pogatetz has finally been cleared to play for us I think, news is his 24 week ban was reduced to an 8 game ban & as the team he was playing for has played a few games and he was unavailable for the liverpool game for us, he can now play. However this is yet to be confirmed by russian fa or boro.
Is this the biggest farce ever over a ban and appeal against a ban ? It makes the Jenas decision look reasonable!
I only caught some of the England game, Im so glad I didnt see it all, we looked Shite !!!

I've been having an argument on another forum that sven should be sacked due to the way he treats players in friendlies+ he hasn't won anything after two tournaments, and mostly they're defending him!(though a few are on my side) Fucking amazing if you ask me.We'll probably get lucky with a victory against wales, but there is a wake up call right around the corner in the qualifiers...

4-1 to Denmark? I walked out the pub with a quarter of a pint left after the 3rd goal because it was so sickening.

that quarter of a pint would have made the 4th goal easier to take if you'd have stayed!
