I'm really hoping Ahmad Brooks becomes a Shawne Merriman clone this season. He's got the same measurables as Merriman and had arguably as much success at the college level despite getting kicked off the team. He's gotta be the one to step up for the D this year because with Thurman gone again they need a playmaker to get things done or else it's 8-8 city again.

I think you may be right about Brooks, he was dirty in college but still it's pretty funny to see a team with discipline problems picking up a dude who was kicked off of his college team.

While the Bengals defense wasnt great last year and the obvious off the field issues. They did go 8-8 with the #1 or #2 SOS in the NFL last season and blew 3 games with errors that should have been W's (at TB, at Denver, and Pitt) Brooks does have a lot of potential to be great.

I remember hearing that the Panthers organinzation was livid that they did not even make the playoffs after being touted as a SB favorite. Id say one more 8-8 season or less and they will get rid of Fox. I think Fox would not be unemployed for long if he got fired as Id say thats who the Giants would hire if they got rid of Coughlin considering Fox used to be a coordinator for the Giants.

Hey guys i'm not sure if you knew this, but Odell Thurman is an alcoholic. And he got suspended this year.

Please make sure you credit Supreme for this info, I wouldn't want him to think you're trying to steal his tpww mojo.

I was very surprised Jerry Jones didnt make a big offer for Payton to be the Cowboys Head Coach considering he was an asst there and in 1 season as the Saints HC he led them to a huge turnaround and their best season in history.

It's tough to rank a coach based on the first season, a lot has to do with players the team already had, unless they make big free agent moves or draft picks, which in most cases goes to the GM or President.

Question is how would Payton had done if they didn't get Brees and Bush? Also, how does he do this year, better or worse?

Another factor is his contract, while it does happen, the NFL really frowns on Coaches leaving for another time while under contract hence why you see teams give up 1st round picks when it happens (Parcells, belicheck, although the Jets settled for a 4th round pick for Edwards).

Payton is a man of great scruples..

No way he'd leave NOLA..

Right now why would he? He makes decent money for a head coach and has a solid young team that is a contender.

But do you really think it a much better oppurtinity came along he wouldn't take it?

Let's say Belicheck or Dungy were going to step down and either owner offered him the be Head Coach & Team Preisdent with a double in salary... don't think he'd take it?

You could be right, neither one of us are in this guys head or personal friends that we could ask him, but I'd be suprised.

mrslackalack
08-04-2007, 02:39 PM
That is true in the NFL if a coach leaves for another team in the league they have to give up draft picks. Herm to KC and Gruden to TB were the 2 most recent examples.

Kris P Lettus
08-04-2007, 02:39 PM
Tom Brady would play for the Browns if the money was right but that doesn't mean it's going to happen..

Kris P Lettus

This was written by a guy I know who writes for the local paper here..

Forget 2001 — these are different Saints

By Rick Cleavland

Say this for New Orleans Saints fans: Over the years, they've developed a sense of humor, which we may presume has been essential for their sanity.

Each time I have written something pointing out a Saints' strength during this training camp, fans have responded saying that I am raising false hopes, that the Saints are setting everyone up for a fall, that would I please, please quit jinxing them.

Wrote one fan, who says he has watched the Saints since Day One: "Please, stop about the Saints. You're killing me. Yes the Saints improved from 3-13 to 10-6 and won a playoff game in their first year under Sean Payton. But have you forgotten that in 2000, in their first year under Jim Haslett, the Saints improved from 3-13 to 10-6 and won a playoff game? Same exact deal. We all know what happened next. They fell flat on their face. I wish it weren't so, but they may not win a game this year."

How's that for footballl fatalism?

My take: Two huge differences exist between 2001, when the Saints lost their final four games to finish 7-9, and 2007:

1) Sean Payton is not Jim Haslett;

2) Most importantly, DrewBrees is not Aaron Brooks.

Saints general manager Mickey Loomis, who was with the Saints then and now, would add a third difference.

"I think first of all this is a better team, period," Loomis said. "This is a team that is ascending. In some respects that 2000 team overachieved, played beyond their abilities."

PAYTON PURSUES PERFECTION

Loomis surely is right, but Payton and especially Brees are still the biggest differences between these Saints and those of six years ago.

First, Payton: The Dallas Cowboys have to be kicking themselves for letting this guy get away one year before Bill Parcells called it quits. Payton, last year's NFL Coach of the Year, has surrounded himself with an outstanding staff that follows his lead.

Payton is a stickler for detail. He's a perfectionist. Everything has to be just right. He will jump a star wide receiver who doesn't line up right in practice. He puts a huge emphasis on character and on discipline.

These Saints are disciplined; those Saints of six years ago were far from it. Haslett was a good football man, but he ran a loose operation. Those Saints often couldn't do the simplest tasks.

Think back: How many times do you remember those Saints being called for the same penalties time after time after time? So many times, they couldn't even line up right, and then, if they did, they often jumped the snap count.

It was like a broken recording in the Superdome: False start, New Orleans, repeat first down. . . False start, New Orleans, repeat first down. . . False start, New Orleans, repeat first down.

Haslett's biggest mistake: He hitched his wagon to the exasperatingly inconsistent Aaron Brooks, who eventually cost him his job.

IF BREES GOES DOWN, ALL BETS OFF

And that brings us to Brees, who is the biggest difference of all in these Saints and those. He gets the Saints in the right formation; he calls the right audibles; he sees the whole field; he makes quick decisions; he throws to the right guy; he carries out his fakes; and he is amazingly accurate.

And when Brees does make a mistake, which isn't often, Brees doesn't come off the field smiling like it was no big deal, which is probably what irritated me most about Brooks.

Brees makes everyone around him better. He makes the defense better because the offense stays on the field longer. He makes the offensive line better because he doesn't hold the ball and has such a quick release. He makes the receivers better because he so often hits them in stride. He makes the coaches better because of all the above.

Drew Brees makes the Saints better, period. These Saints won't repeat what happened in 2001 unless he goes down.

mrslackalack
08-04-2007, 02:46 PM
Bill Cowher is gonna be the big HC that every1 will want next offseason. I heard the Browns would prolly give him the President, GM, and HC role for him to go there which would REALLY tick off Steeler fans.

Depending on this year, I predict Payton will be our coach for a long while..

1) your Brady example is poor because you through out the key detail in my Payton example, it would not just be the money, but a same or better chance to win.

Now, if you said Manning retires and the Colts offer Brady double the money, that would be a fair example/comparison, but the Browns have a shit team and much less chance to win then the Patriots.

2) Nice prediction "depending on this year"... Well, I predict the Patriots will win the superbowl depending on how far they make it in the playoffs...

I don't think so. I can see this sticking to big games and special events (ie: Hall of Fame game). There would be far too much of an uproar (plus the NFL would lose a ton of TV revenue) because the channel isn't available to the widest audience. Still gay, but realilistically I don't think its happening.

Actually, if a majority of the games are on NFL network then NFL network will be free with basic cable.

The NFL makes their money of selling advertising, hence the reason to put games on their own network, they get the AD money instead of the networks.

If they make it difficult for people to watch the games and less people tune in the AD rate will go down.

TAMPA, Fla. -- Tampa Bay Buccaneers fullback Mike Alstott is expected to announce his retirement Thursday, multiple Tampa Bay-area media outlets reported.

The team has scheduled a 2 p.m. ET press conference in Tampa, at which the retirement is expected to be announced.

The announcement comes after Alstott missed a third consecutive day of workouts Thursday as the team prepared for its exhibition opener Friday against the New England Patriots. His retirement is reportedly not injury-related.

Alstott, who was entering his 12th year with the Bucs, is the team's all-time leader in touchdowns with 71 and rushing touchdowns with 58.

He is second in team history with 5,088 yards rushing and third in scoring with 432 points.

Palko did look aiight minus the two INT's.. I think he just doesn't have the "QB vision" yet.. Also, I don't trust left handed QB's.. I mean, everything changes when he comes in for Brees.. Does Jamal Brown move back to RT?? Etc..

Devery Henderson looked awesome untill he tweaked his hammy last in the first quarter.. Reggie looked amazing both inside and outside the tackles.. I marked out when the lined him up at WR.. Kevin Dudley, our second string FB we got off of the Falcons practice squad, is a beast.. Jason David won the starting CB spot over Fred Thomas but got burned by Roscoe Parrish like 3 times.. The rest of the D, atleast our starters, looked good..

Also, I f'n hate that Brian Simmons, the LB we got from the Bengals, is wearing the late great Sam Mills number..

Poz is looking like a beast. I know its pre-season, but he looked great against the Saints. That was a good game, both sides got some good looks at their backups. Poz had a great sack on Palko, and it seemed like he was around the ball all night. He is this years Demeco Ryans. He is really going to help the run game. Now we just need to find about 3 or 4 decent DTs and maybe we can stop the run before every racks up another 141 yards a game.

SammyG, I would focus more on the performance of your quarterback rather than the performance of your wide receivers if you want your team to do well this year.

Yes, the Rams got a defensive end and tight end in the offseason. Guess what, though? Every team in the league got a defensive end and tight end this offseason. Every team in the history of free agency has gotten a defensive end and tight end in the offseason. It is expected for teams (ie owners) to make what appear to be good signings that will make their team appear to be good.

But I've seen this oh so many times before, my friend. Fans tend to mush up good their team will be with how many recognizable players their team has signed before the season starts. It's psychologically satisfying until about week four when it is apparent that team will be no better than 7-9.

Let me just ask you two questions, SammyG. One, can your defense do well without the assumption that a big name player will have a big season? Two, can your quarterback make clutch decisions when they really matter and not hide behind the same statistical wall that he has been for over three years? If you answer no to these questions, then all of those free agent signings your team has made will just result in another year of mediocrity.

SammyG
08-12-2007, 07:20 PM
Our biggest weakness was defending the run last year, and the additions of Carriker and Hall will help stop the run, in my opinion. We are indeed hoping for some of the younger players to step it up, Fahkir Brown is gonna be out 4 games, so we need Tye Hill, Bartell, Walls, and our orther corners to step it up. But I am loving Carriker at Nosetackle, the guy is a fucking beast. Also, for Bulger, I am completely confident in him. Marc Bulger makes great decisions, ever since Martz stopped being coach. I am very confident in this year's team. More confident than I've been in a long time.

And neither of NE or IND's 5 are the New England vs Indianapolis season matchup. You know what, thats a fucking crime against football if you ask me. How does that game not atleast get put after week 11 so that they'd atleast leave themselves the option of making it a Monday night game. Seriously, as a football fan period, you have to agree with me here. Thats a fucking joke.

But, i love who we do have on the primtimers.

New Orleans- Probably beat them by 28. Reggie Bush will get "Lito'ed" about 3 times by Bob Sanders and Manning will torch there piss poor D.

Jags- Jags vs Colts divisional rivalry game on prime time is always good. One of the best division rivalrys in football. Next to the New England game every year, i really really love the Jags games. They're always good.

San Diego ( whales vagina )- What an epic matchup. This is the one i really really wanna see. Not just because it could show the world that the Chargers arent better then the Champs, but because i still have visions of Michael Turner streaking down the sideline for touchdowns and i want him deaded by Bob Sanders.

Atlanta- Basically, i'm looking forward to seeing MTH literally cry in the NFL thread. This will be a 50 point blow out. Mark my words. 50 points. Jim Sorgi will throw for 3 tds in the second half of this game. And Manning will probably have 6 in the first half. Its gunna be rediculous. It will be just like a game of 2004 Madden with your buddy, when he's using Vick and all he does is bootlegs and you obliterated Vick and injured him for the game and then proceed to drop 75 points on him. Yah. Just like that.

Baltimore - OOOOOOOOOOOHHH YAH! Lets start those diesle engines and surround the field with the Mayflower truck right now before that idea gets old and retarded. Oh wait.. That was old and retarded before they did it last year in the playoffs and got punked and out toughed on there home field agains the " finesse " Colts. If i could have one football moment to see in person, it'd be the moment the crowd started coming out of that stadium after the loss and the Mayflower trucks were backed away and taken back where they belonged having really served know purpous at all. lol How depressing of a moment that must have been.

DrA I feel you with the New York Giants thing, they are on FOX every fucking week here. I guess it sorta makes sense, since anyone who was a football fan before the 1960's is probably a Giants fan since the Patriots weren't around. However, the amount of those people alive is dwindling every year, I want to see a different NFC team every once in a while.

stima in all fairness you live in Mass, would you expect to see another team on Fox? Fox covers NFC teams, and the Giants are the NFC team in your area. I wouldn't expect to see any team other than the Pats, Bills or Jets on CBS because I live in New York. Its local coverage, it makes sense.

DrA I have no idea where you live so I don't know if this applies to you.

Well yeah I get that they are showing mostly NFC East games since I live "in the area" but why? I don't really care about the NFC East that much, just because I am a 4-6 hour drive from most of the teams in the NFC East doesn't make me want to watch them more than other divisions within the NFC. In New York its different, since there is team(s) in both the NFC and AFC. It's not like that here

I understand where you're coming from. But I mean, the majority of people in New England, if they aren't a fan of the Pats, are going to be a Jets, Giants, Bills fan. It only makes sense for Fox to air mostly Giants games in this area. It just sucks for people not in that majority.

Guess they changed thier mind.

From kcchiefs.com:

1. Audio/Visual enhancements including a 360 degree ribbon board
2. A “Hall of Honor” that will offer our fans a chance to experience the rich history of the Chiefs.
3. Significantly improved team training facilities comparable to the very best in the NFL.
4. A field at the Chiefs training complex available for youth football teams in our community.
5. A new “Horizon Level” on the south side of the stadium that will provide fans an opportunity to view the game from a festive, open-air concourse.
6. Additional seating at every vantage point in the stadium for our fans with disabilities.
7. And finally, architectural enhancements that will ensure that Arrowhead retains its status as the most beautiful stadium in the NFL

All of these improvements are focused on our two primary goals:

1. To augment Arrowhead’s reputation as the best gameday experience in the NFL
2. To have a football team that our fans can be proud of and one that is capable of bringing home the trophy that bears my father’s name.

IS KC considered Small market? Seems like the Old AFL teams were mostly what would now be considered small market. The Bills lost a good ally when the KC owner died, as he and Ralph Wilson were old school AFL owners. They were there for the merger, and with Cincy's owner were fighting for revenue sharing.

When the Giants owner died, as with KCs owner (im drawing blanks on their names, im sorry) there was a big hullaballoo. Ralph Wilson has been just as important to founding the AFL, and making the merger, and to this day still owns the team. yet he is overlooked in history. I think had we won 1 of the 4 Bowls, that would be different. Being 2nd best isnt good enough I guess.

Patriots released Josh Miller (P) today, leaving the job up to two guys who have never punted in an NFL game before. One of them is Tom Malone, who was pretty sick while at USC so I don't understand why he didn't punt for anyone last year.

Great points MAH. BTH the Giants owner name was Wellingtom Mara and the Chiefs owner name was Lamar Hunt.

Mara worked hard to preserve the overall NFL product. Owning a New York team (which can probably shit on everyone in terms of revenue, although I don't have any numbers in front of me) and advocating for revenue sharing was a wise move. Its either that, or be like major league baseball, with a pretty much total lack of parity.

Giants are only the 17th most valuable NFL team so it'd be pretty easy to promote revenue sharing when you're in the bottom half of the league.

You can sell out every game and still be small market. Ticket revenue is a small piece of the pie.

The Bills sell outnearly every game, have some of the most die hard fans but are considered small market due to a smaller surroundung populace that doesnt haveas much TV and radio revenue.

Teams like KC, Buffalo and Green Bay are all small market despite having top 5 or so fan support. They are some of the most die hard fans.

Teams Like Dallas, Washington and NY dont have as loyal fan base (seems like some of them are fair weather due to the large numbers of transplants in those major cities) but rake in the dough.

on a side note, I would like to point out that I think the best fans are in the small markets. They have that home grown local love, its like being at a high school game. They also are on average less wealthy than the "big City" fans. It takes someone special to fork over a paycheck to watch a losing team in the blisstering cold and snow. Ill get blasted for this one, but top 5 fan bases (not by size, but by loyalty to the team.)

This is not in order, but is all top 5.

1) Buffalo - Obviously I would put my team in here. The Bills keep WNY alive. 4 Super Bowl Losses, tons of snow, and losing seasons but yet we still believe. Alot of Bills players move to Buffalo and never leave.
2) New England - I fucking hate NE fans because they seem to forget the down years, and only talk about how great they are, but they are still die hard and like Buffalo sit through the snow. that playoff game i nthe snow was magical.
3)KC - Loudest Fucking Stadium I have ever been in. These guys are crazy drunks from the Ozarks and shit.
4) Eagles - You would think they play year round. They never sut the fuck up.
5) Cleveland - The Dawg Pound. 2 teams, one love. I think they might be starting to throw in the towel though.

Flame on, I know its coming.

MAH is exactly right DieselMac. KC is a small market but it doesnt mean its not a great franchise or has a lot of great fans. In baseball the Cincinnati Reds are considered small market and a low payroll but they have a great history with a lot of HOFs and great fan support even when they are losing. KC has a rich tradition in the NFL. And lately they have been an exciting franchise to watch with 2 great RBs in the past few years with LJ and Priest and a top 3 TE in the league in Gonzo.

Tailgating at Arrowhead : Kansas City loves football--and with one of the loudest football stadiums anywhere and being consistently voted the Top Tailgating City in the US--I get goosebumps just thinking about waiting in line to fire up the grill and looking at the plume of smoke over the parking lot. It's football season, KC--time to fire up that grill and as they say...the smoke will always rise at Arrowhead.

I am actually kinda tired of all of these new stadiums being built. Pretty soon every team in the NFL is going to be in a dome with a retractable roof and artificial turf.

oh yeah, and new stadiums are just horrible

the old Patriots stadium (Foxboro, Sullivan, Schafer it had a few names) was a dump, they built it as cheap as they could.

Gillete is unreal, now given last night it was 7.50 for budlight and $40.00 to park, but there is not a bad seat in the house, all seats are angled to the 50yd line, plenty of bathrooms, more types of food then you could want/need, just a great stadium and I would only hope for the money most teams get for tickets every fan has that great of a stadium to go to (even though we'll never get a superbowl because no dome).

The Krafts are also smart, they're building a mall where the parking was at the stadium and made more/new parking accross the street and they're also building a hotel, so you'll be able to watch the game and walk over to your hotel room and not have to worry about driving home...

As for KC, wasn't it KC who had the plan for a dome that was going to cover the football and baseball stadiums by being mobile? or was that somewhere else?

on a different story, they're saying Vick is trying to get a plea deal, but having trouble since everyone else has already turned a deal on him, so they're saying even if he works out a plea he still looking at a year in jail. good news, I just want to see him go to jail for this and not get to walk.

Well, we have a solid front 7, it's just that our D-backs seem to give up way too many big plays.. As I said, I didn't see last nights game but from what I've heard Jason David did an excellent job against Chad Johnson.. Also, I believe Roman Harper will be a beast as long as he can stay healthy..
