One of the best indicators that large groups of people are braindead sheep: everyone booing when a batter gets hit by a pitch. You just got a free base runner you morons.

Yeah, I really don't want the Dodgers to win the World Series period. It's not because of the same reason I don't want the Red Sox to win. I mean I of course would favor the Dodgers over the Red Sox. But, I really don't want the media and ESPN to go ape shit on the Yankees. The last thing I want to hear is how stupid the Yankees were for giving up Torre.
I love Torre just as much as the next Yankee fan but I guarantee you if the Dodgers win the World Series all we will be hearing for the whole off season is how stupid the Yankees were for getting rid of him. I would be willing to bet money that, that is exactly what's gonna happen if the Dodgers win.

I didn't want to bring it up. Since I'm not one of those cocky arrogant Yankee fans who like to rub their faces in it. But, yeah the Red Sox really have a great record against the Angels in the playoffs. I am trying to hold my head high and say the Angels will win this. But right now I can't see that happening. Remember this was the same team who was down 3 games to fucking zero and they came back and won the next 4.

Angels are coming into the playoffs quite a healthy team. The Red Sox on the other hand are not the same team they were a few years ago. They can and may still win this series, anything is possible. I'm rooting for the Angels myself in this series even though Ellesbury is quickly becoming one of my favourite players as well as the fact they've got Bay.
Sorry Miz.

Yeah, you never know with Beckett. But to tell you the truth I don't know which Burnett will show up tonight either. There's the good Burnett and then there's the bad Burnett. And unless Posada is the DH Yankees may have lost a pretty big bat since now apparently Burnett doesn't like Posada catching for him.

When your starting pitcher throws 100 pitches. 82 of them fast balls, the rest a combination of change ups, sliders, and curves, it should be easy to figure him out.
Atleast that's what was on the ticker on ESPN this morning.:o

Angels beat them, no doubt. But can we also talk about some of that umpiring?
The home plate ump was giving Lackey way more calls than Lester. Lester was getting fucked over huge.
There were a number of third strikes called balls. There were also a number of these with 2 outs. Then there were the calls at first base.
These had a big impact on the game, since they kept innings going and raised Lesters pitch count, and the Angels scored a lot of their runs with 2 outs.
Fucking innings should have been over.
But it happens in baseball. Frustrating, but the Angels win and that's that.
Still think the Sox will win this
Emperor Smeat

Sounds like the ump was making up to the Angels for all the times Angels thought umps favored Red Sox in their match ups in the playoffs. As dumb as that sounds, the Angels really believe in that idea even though they have home field advantage in most of the series between the teams.
When Lackey is pitching well he is almost unstoppable but was hoping he would fall apart like he does normally in the playoffs but last night he never did it.

Supposedly this year's postseason goes deeper into November than last year if the World Series reaches 7 games. MLB is the last major sport that should be even thinking of going deeper into winter since baseball was never meant to be played in conditions similar to last year's Rays-Phillies World Series.

Not surprised Nathan blew the save since he tends to stink against the Yankees in the playoffs but I'm upset that out of all the people who could have won a game or tied it in the 9th, it had to be A-Rod.
:foc: A-Rod. #1 player I hate in all of MLB regardless of the team (hated how he left Seattle, hated him in Texas & in NY).
Meanwhile Angels pitching has been much stronger than in recent years vs the Red Sox in the playoffs. Did not expect the Red Sox to be flat again. ESPN is saying that's 3rd playoff game in a row they failed to get more than 4 hits.

yea, but that's every single playoffs from every single sport. Everytime I look on one of the sports threads on here during the playoffs, there's always posts about bad calls. And that's pretty much the sentiment on everyone around the US. It's always going to be there. Unless you get instant replay for every single call, (which would be ridiculous) then that will never change

Yup. They just haven't shown up to play. If anyones to blame it's definitely the bats.
Beckett had a bad 7th but he pitched a gem up to that point. If the lineup scored the runs they should he'd have been out and Wagner would be in. Instead they were trying to stretch the pitching with a shitty 1-1 tie.
Just not enough run production and that's all there is to it. Hopefully they can show up for game 3 and turn it around.
Neither teams really hitting the cover off the ball, but the Angels style of baserunning lends itself to getting more runs from nothing.

Yea but dude, these are some REALLY BAD calls. I agree there's always bad calls, but these are headline making bad calls.
That Mauer hit was one of the worst fucking calls I've ever seen. The ump was 10 feet in front of it.
Granted the Twins had plenty of chances, and their failure to win was pretty much deserved. But wow to the call...
Then there was the call at first base in the Angels/Red Sox game which was unbelievably bad.
That's a first base call. It should be easy as hell. The guy was out by 2 steps. That call could be made from the upper deck.
I accept that bad calls happen but sometimes there's just no excuse.

Why not? Red Sox payroll isn't near the Yankees. The Yankees spend nearly 100 million dollars more on their team.
Mets and Cubs also have higher payrolls than the Red Sox. The Red Sox payroll is basically the same as that of the Tigers, Phillies, and the Angels who they're playing right now. They're all within 7 mill of eachother.
That's what the budget is for a playoff team. You have to spend money to win. The Yankees, though, are spending nearly double that of those playoff teams I listed. Over 200 million.
And...when did I say the Red Sox shouldn't be winning? They spend the money of a playoff team, and they're a playoff team. But, they should be playing better for what they spend too.
I just don't think it's nearly a comparison to the yankees.

Money doesn't really buy World Series champioships. We could have Pujols, Mauer, And any other young great guy that you can think of. But, no matter how much we spend there's no guarantees . That's why almost every single year since 2001 we have been beaten by the team that is making less money.
But, I have got to say that in a way I'm proud because the Yankees have a lot of farm pitchers and guys in the minors who I think will do very good. A-Jax, and Montero to name a few.
I've got a question just so I know what makes them failures if they don't win the World Series in your mind?
The Yankees just won 103 games, had the best winning record in Baseball, and won the American league to get to the playoffs.
I think the word "Failure" isn't really the word I'd use after all that.

It definitely doesn't buy world championships. The Yankees have been living proof of that since 2000.
The core of Jeter, O'Neil, Brosius and Bernie Williams played far better than any of their money free agents and dream teams ever did.
Same with the Cubs and Mets.
What I'm saying is that you have to spend some money to compete, in most cases. There's always suprise teams. That's awesome. It's part of what makes baseball great.
But in competitive divisions, teams need to spend money to compete and stay consistently good. There's nothing wrong with it. It's business.
I think it's far more noble to spend 100 mill on your team to be a playoff contender, than to trade everything away and pinch pennies like the Pirates.
What I'm also saying is, sometimes fans tend to liken the Red Sox to the Yankees in terms of money ball. It's not true. They have always spent significantly less than the Yankees, and about the same as other perrenial playoff teams (Phillies, Angels)
The Yankees payroll is almost double.
It's also important to keep divisions in mind. Some divisions don't have a 500 lb gorilla of a team to compete with.
The Red Sox spend more because the Yankees are their main rival. They have to compete, even if their budget is 100 million less. So the pressure is always on them to counter big acquisitions.
But yea, my general thesis here isn't that $= championships. It's that the Red Sox spend more or less what other successful teams do. The other point I'm making is that the Yankees went out this season and threw a shit ton of money around. Now, that doesn't = a guarunteed championship, but for the cash they put up at stake, they should expect nothing less than a world series. They obviously got fed up and went out and bought the hitting and pitching they needed.
The whole team has been great, but they wouldn't be where they are without Texiera and Sabathia right now.
I'm not even really knocking the Yankees here. I'm just stating some financial facts, and think for what they invested anything less than a world series will dissapoint.
I think thats fair

Not for me. I'm judging both cases on a seperate basis. I brought the real financial details up in response to Supreme. Didn't really mean to tangle the issues.
I say the Yankees failing to win the world series will be a failure just because of how hyped they are, how well they've played, and how much they've put into this season, both financially and on the field.
But that's baseball. Some may say "well they won 100 games, its not a failure"
Well, if you don't win the world series what does it matter if you win 100 or 80? Ya know?
I say this not only about the Yankees, but about all teams.
That's how I view it. If the Red Sox get knocked out, their season was a failure. Cut and dry. The ultimate goal is to win the world series.
Remember when the Mariners won the most games ever and then got bounced from the playoffs?
A professional sports season is all or nothing. You either win the championship, or fall short like the rest of the teams.
That doesn't mean the team sucks, or that all losers are equal failures. It just means "there's always next year". The season didn't work out.

That doesn't mean the team sucks, or that all losers are equal failures. It just means "there's always next year". The season didn't work out.
I guess I never really thought about the team that didn't win the World Series a failure. I guess it's just I never thought about 29 teams being failures. You really bring up some very strong points. I think if we continue to play the way we have up until now I think we could win the World Series.
It really depends on if these post season blues for CC and A-rod have really ended or not. I think that's a huge factor.

Actually, it is pretty impressive when you consider this expansion era to the other two. All four expansion teams from the 90s have made the World Series. The longest was the Rockies at 15 years. Compare that to the previous expansion teams:
Angels: 42 years
Rangers: never
Astros: 44 years
Padres: 16 years
Expos/Nationals: never
Mariners: never
Blue Jays: 16 years
Only the Mets, Royals, and Brewers made it to the WS quicker than the Rockies but even then, none of them come close to doing as quick as the D-Backs (4 years) and Marlins (5 years) who both won it.

Don't forget the Brewers won the Wild Card last year and it was slated to be a 2 team race between Chicago and Milwaukee.
Plus the Cards had so many pitching questions entering the season. Could Carpenter and Wainwright pitch full seasons? Who would be the #3? Who would close? They emphatically answered all three of those questions all while Chicago and Milwaukee stumbled.

Carpenter was coming back healthy. Franklyn showed last season in the 2nd half that he was a capable closer. They have a lot of offence. I personally didn't see Milwaukee being anything like they were last year. There's no reason they shouldn't have been, but I just didn't see them doing anything significant this year. The Cubs were a dissapointment, but I saw them and the Cards coming out of the division with one being the winner and the other the wild card.
Whatever though.

From the sounds of things, the STARTING point for Albert is gonna be the 10 years, $275 million A-Rod got. Wonder how close he'll get to $300 million.</font>

GOD DAMN! Pujols is a great hitter but I know who I am not gonna get when/if he is a free agent. That's just to much. And besides I unfortunately don't think he's clean. I think it's only a matter of time before he is tested positive for Roids.

This has been Hero's argument in the past and I admit back then I didn't fully agree, but now I do.
In the sense of sports not business (profit/loss) the goal is to win it all, not to win the WC, the Divison, the DS, CS... it's to be the World Series Winner.
So yeah, everyone else failed at their goal, now a team that goes to the WS and doesn't win had a more successful season then a team that didn't make the playoffs but they're still a failure.
Supreme Olajuwon
10-12-2009, 07:20 PM
I'd agree with that if everyone were on an even playing field but they're not. If the Pirates or Nationals have a winning record, nobody is going to call their season a failure because they didn't win the World Series. Certain fanbases are just spoiled and they get higher expectations.

I blame a lot of that on poor ownership. There should be more enforcement of teams that settle for mediocrity, sell off all their talent, and make no efforts to make a push and rally their market.
Not every market is going to be as big and profitable as others, but they can be successful and get the locals to care about their team.
They just have to go out there and do it.
It's just not fair to the fans, the players, and the rest of the league to have certain teams that intentionally suck to keep costs low and go for a small, but safe profit. I think there should be a league minimum on payroll. MLB should care more and say "if ownership has no intention of making their team successful GTFO"

he was on Rockies All Access fishing the other day and I wondered why he was fishing with his shoulder being freshly repaired

Let's just say he was testing the quality of work the surgeon did and hope for the best.

that also might have been the most boring episode of any show ever
"let's watch Jeff Francis and some dude fish for like half an hour"

Would of been great if he had gotten upset and unleashed a fastball upside the other guys head.
Then again that would be in the shoulder surgery area again.

there was something that confused me at the Rockies game yesterday
Ian Stewart was pinch hit for in the ninth by Eric Young Jr, but when Tulowitzki was up in the last at bat of the game Stewart was on deck. I don't understand why that was

I'm not sure, maybe they did a defensive switch and put EY2 in for whoever they switched Stewart with that way they could have both of them bat.

Street had Utley struck out at least two times that were called balls I believe anyway
Yeah I know the Phillies got a lot calls, but what those pitches to Chase Utley were clearly balls. A foot outside.
C'mon now.

DaveWadding
10-13-2009, 11:43 PM
uh, how about the fact that the Dodgers are no better than middle of the pack against the Phillies?
Dodgers batters versus Phillies:
.276 (8th highest out of 20 opponents) / .314 (16/20) / .413 (9/20) / .727 OPS (12/20)
Dodgers batters vs. Phillies pitching at Dodger Stadium:
.229/.265/.329/.594
Phillies pitching statistics vs. LA:
66.1 IP, 3.12 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, 48 K (6.5 K/9)

Um.. Dodgers and the Phillies are very evenly matched.
Phillies 3.12 era?
Dodgers had like a 3.14. Basically the same.
Phillies batted .229 against us this year I believe?
there is absolutely NO way it will be a sweep. I would bet you anything.

God I hope not. I think I read on ESPN that it had been a really long time since a National League team won 2 World Series in a row. And I am kinda worried that this could be their year to end that.

Hasn't been done since the Big Red Machine in 75/76. And wouldn't you know it, their 2nd WS title came against the New York Yankees.

Not with Vicente Padilla as the game 2 starter.
SammyG
10-14-2009, 07:51 PM
Um, did you see what Padilla has done since he's been a Dodger? Oh, yeah, go undefeated. Did you see him manhandle the St.Louis lineup in game 3 and get us the sweep?
Plus, is he really ther game 2 starter? I figured it would be Wolf.

Don't forget Padilla is Padilla and will go back to his old ways in no time.
