Trade deadline is over. But you can still pull off DFA trades until the end of this month.

<font color=goldenrod>Even longer actually...teams can continue making DFA moves throughout the remainder of the regular season, although anybody not in your organization by the end of August 31st is ineligible for the postseason. So really the only reason to make a move is if you are in an extremely tight race and need an extra body to even get you into the playoffs, or if you are picking up a guy under contract for the next season, etc.

I seem to remember a couple years ago the Red Sox acquired Mike Stanton in the second to last day of the season for a couple of minor leaguers...a move nobody could quite figure out as he was ineligible for the postseason and only under contract through the rest of that year.</font>

Tazawa Mania!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sox needed a run in that top half though, they are running out of options with pitching here. Yanks still got a few arms in the pen - and the top of the order coming up

lol just said on ESPN A-Rod is a "True Yankee" now, shut the fuck up seriously. This true Yankee stuff is so retarded, he is the best player on the team.

Plus I'm pretty sure he's already hit a walk off home run against the Red Sox. I know for a fact he's at least hit a homer off of Papelbon in the top of the 9th at Fenway to put the Yankees a head.

Also on ESPN they played both local announcers when A-Rod hit the homer back to back. Just made the Yankee's guy sound so much more ridiculous, he is like a cartoon or something. AN A-BOMB FOR A-ROD! THE NIGHT THAT TURNED INTO EARLY MORNING!

So I walked away from baseball here in the last little bit as I have been realbusy and the Jays are killing my soul. So.

So...

So I find out today they traded Rolen to Cincy?

WTF?

Why did Cincy want him? What did the Jays get? Was it Encarnationne (sp?) ... is that it?... was there more to the deal??

Don't quite get it. Does Cincy have a chance this year?

Hmmm.

And the Jays put Rios on waivers, he was claimed and the Jays poulled him off. OK. Um... They just went through a big deal of signing him to a 64+ million dollar 6 year deal and they are fishing him? .... any idea who claimed him? Rios is a bit of a headcase. Can be very unfocused, but I would still say he has a lot of upside.

Sucks he gave up that HR to A-Rod but I mean he did do pretty well the inning before when they put him in during the 14th. He struck out Texeria with a running in score position among other things. I'll admit I never really heard of this guy before last night but some of my friends where saying they have been waiting for his debut so maybe he will stick around for a while.

They probably just put Rios on waivers hoping he would clear them, that way they could have some options later on in the season. It happens to tons of players, I heard the Yankees put Cano on waivers, and I'm sure if anyone made a claim on Cano they would just pull him off. I doubt the Yankees plan on trading Cano later on this month but it just gives them some options when he does clear them.

Clear them and then what? Put him in AAA?

I don't think so.

They did it to see if there was interest for him. Like I said, all that investment in himand celebration just a year ago and already looking to move him? Makes little sense.

Anywayz.

Don't understand the Rolen move. Unless it was Rolen wanting to move. Neither team is going anywhere and Rolen is a way better defensive 3B not to mention he's hitting really good (albeit not with much power) this year.

Odd moves by the Jays, from my perspective.

Jesus Shuttlesworth
08-08-2009, 05:12 PM
No I think if they clear waivers then they can just trade them to whoever without the waiver process coming into play.

So say if they put Rios on waivers, he clears them, they are now free to trade him to whoever they want. With the waiver process I think another team can make a claim on a guy and screw up a potential trade or something - to be honest I'm not 100% sure (obviously) but I think it's something like that.

Basically putting a player on waivers isn't a big deal, if the player clears them (most do) it just gives the team an option for trades for the rest of the month.

But that's just it. The Jays made sucha big deal in his long term signing. Now they want to trade him off? He's not doing anything different this year than what got him the big contract. Except a bit of a lower batting avg.
Maybe they (Jays) finally see he's peaked and the potential isn't there anymore and they are hoping others haven't figured it out yet.

Rios' yearly #'s have never been all that impressive but yet he's raved upon. I'm not calling him a scrub, I like him well enough, but people seem to think he's a 35/35 guy. Don't know why.

It just gives them some options, like I mentioned I heard the Yankees put Cano through waivers - 0.1% chance of the Yankees moving Cano - but just makes some options.

Also if a team claims Rios they are also claiming his huge contract, so maybe the Jays regret their decision with that?

<font color=goldenrod>Looking forward towards the offseason. Looks pretty bleak for the Mets tbh. Despite having a shitload coming off the payroll even when you account for the raises that guys like Santana and Wright are getting in their contracts, its being said there might only be around $20 million to spend and that they will need to have a smaller payroll than this year. Madoff is forcing the Wilpons to stay on a budget.

They are going to need a big bat. I was always against getting Holliday because his numbers would go way down outside of Coors, but he's been insane ever since he came back to the NL. Cards are hoping to re-sign him though. And with Damon/Matsui coming off the books, you can bet the Yankees will be a big player to sign him...especially if their offense falls short in the playoffs or something. Plus getting Holliday will cost the Mets a first rounder and I think they need all the draft picks they can get at this point.

Gonna need a starting pitcher too, but most of the really good potential FA starters have options that will certainly be exercised (Beckett, Lee, etc.) Probably gonna come by the way of a trade if they can get anything. Not that they have much to trade.

Hamilton's also real big on Jesus and his faith. When he was a Red he got them to start a Faith Day promotion. So this is kinda inconsistent with being a good Christian.

Also if I remember correctly his wife is really hot.

he is a born again, who got into religion as a savior from his addictions. So that has nothing to do with this. He lapsed, and religion was out the door.

its not like he isnt a good christian still. I mean, its not like he is fucking kids and still holding mass.

He really is. I can't believe how badly he fucked up with Halladay. He could have dumped him easily at the deadline and gotten some real value in return to build for the future.
Instead he decided to get a big head about the fact that he had the biggest asset of the trade-talks, and scoffed so much at deals that he didn't get anything.
I bet that's a regret. In a year he'll be on one of the teams that was bidding for him anyways, since they'll have the free agent dollars.
Only difference is they won't have shit for it

Evil Vito

<font color=goldenrod>Nearly every player in the big leagues is put on waivers, just for the hell of it, to gauge potential interest. Claims rarely ever occur though, mostly out of fear that the team could say "okay then, you can have him" like what the White Sox did with Rios. Back in the day the Yankees were forced to take Jose Canseco and his salary even though they only claimed him to keep him away from Boston.

My guess would be a team needing a bat off the bench would have claimed Sheffield. Really not sure why the Mets wanted to keep him other than that they are hoping they can get some sort of miracle run as they still have a ton of games against NL East opponents.

I also read that Manuel would be interested in bringing Sheffield back for 2010...which, as good as he's been this year, if he is on next year's Mets, something has gone drastically wrong. They need to get younger and more athletic.</font>

A. Sheff was having a very good year. his biggest problem was he is playing too much due to alllll of the mets injurys. he started breaking down himself as expected. most contending teams would love to have garys bat coming off the bench.

2. just to see what they could get probably...or they would have let him go but it as a team like the phils or the marlins and the mets didnt want him goin there

<font color=goldenrod>Vernon has more than likely already cleared. Like I said, teams often put their entire rosters on waivers for the sake of masking their intentions. But in most cases those players will go unclaimed because it's obvious the team doesn't want to trade them and would just pull them back in the event of a claim.

In Vernon's case, he probably cleared because nobody wants that contract. It's unfortunate but he seems like a case of "alright, got my big deal, later guys..."</font>

After the Ryan Church debacle there's no real reason to risk Wright feeling woozy even when he thinks he can play. If they were still in the hunt they'd probably let him play, but at this point it's not worth it.

That's dumb. Because if it's about the cash, the real cash is at free agencies. The longer you keep yourself off the clock, thelonger before the 'reamoney' kicks in.

Jesus Shuttlesworth

Not if you are getting a huge bonus up front because what if he doesn't pan out? Another Boras guy Craig Hansen got 1 million a year deal right off the bat and I don't think he'll be a very big player once he can hit free agency. I bet his initial deal will total more than he will ever for the rest of his career.

<font color=goldenrod>Mets activate Billy Wagner from the 60-day disabled list and release Livan Hernandez. Livan's overall numbers are misleading.

Hernandez was 7-8 with a 5.47 ERA for the Mets in 2009, but posted a 7.33 ERA in July and an 11.30 ERA in August.

He had a really good first half, but as I expected, he trailed off...didn't think he'd trail off THAT much though, damn. But it was time for him to go. They need to start auditioning guys who could potentially be on the 2010 staff, which they've already done with Bobby Parnell.</font>

Oh.

I'm sure they all envision themselves as stars but why be stupid? You never know what could happen, it takes a lonnng time to become a free agent. Even if you are a "super free agent" (that's a legitimate term in the world of the MLB) The MLB free agent rules are so complicated it's crazy, as are the anti-trust laws that are associated with them.

<font color=goldenrod>Yeah, I guess it was only a matter of time before he acted up...he's been a model citizen the rest of the year, probably just to angle for a new contract.

As good as he's been this year, I figured that if Gary Sheffield was on the Mets in 2010, something went horribly wrong during the offseason.</font>

I even read that if the Mets agree to pay the majority of the $3.5 million left on his deal, they might be able to net a decent prospect from Boston. Not a huge prospect or anything obviously...but someone who at least projects into a Major Leaguer.</font>

How is it in panicking? If the season ended right now the Red Sox are in the playoffs, well unless the Rangers come back to win cuz Red Sox aren't coming back tonight. The AL East is pretty much out of reach, especially with the loss tonight. They are right there for the Wild Card, will be real surprised if they lose their spot to the fucking Texas Rangers. Only thing I could see happening is the Rays making a run and jumping both of them.

What? did you say the same thing for the Red Sox and the White Sox prior to 2004/2005? why would a team "not be worthy of a single ounce of respect" just because they haven't won a championship. the Cubs have had good teams, been to like 7 WS since they last won.
