Damn, I'd pretty much forgotten who most people were. Should probably have marathoned the first two series to refresh my memory. Far too many old, white haired guys for my liking.
Glad Obi Wan saved Daenerys though, she's a beautiful shining light amongst the smelly, tramp looking people on the show.

In the books, Jaime and Brienne fight for a while, and he is legitimately surprised that she is so good. He was actually trying to escape, and she defeats him and tries to make him yield. It's been a little bit since I read it now, but I seem to remember him being legitimately defeated by her. Granted he was shackled and malnourished, but I do recall him being incredibly surprised by her skill, and not necessarily 'holding back' for any sort of mutual respect. He's Jaime Lannister, the guy isn't a saint and doesn't have very many qualms about honor when his life is concerned.

Dont understand people complaining about it being different. It is a 1000 page book, there are 10 episodes, that means roughly 100 pages to fit into 60 minutes. Even at best, you are giving each page 36 seconds of screen time.
I especially liked the scene in question though, Jaime is easily the best developed character as ASOS Spoiler he is one of the few to deviate from what he was like the first time you read about him and gets really interesting after a certain major event.

The first series mirrored the books almost exactly, so I can see why some people would get annoyed at the changes made then to the story of the second books. That said, I think the vast majority of the changes they make are for the benefit of the television plot and much of the book wouldn't work on screen.
SlickyTrickyDamon
04-13-2013, 07:25 AM
It's the Bible for the rest of the series, so trimming that down wouldn't do much good and would have done some harm. I didn't expect the other books to carry that on.
They need to trim the fat a bit and the novels have way too many characters. I guess the only major difference in that respect is the city of Qarth. No real idea why Robb's wife has a different name in the novels and in the TV series. I know they changed Theon's sister's name because of how close it was to Osha.
whiteyford
04-13-2013, 07:48 AM
Honestly haven't noticed that many changes, certainly none that have leaped out at me as series ruining changes, more certain characters not being as developed but like ECG said, it's for the benefit of the show.

What STD said reflects my opinion, though id like to add there are far less significant events in the first book that needed to be shot, so Id assume more time for other stuff to be put in, with this season there are a lot of significant happenings so things really need to be condensed.
Wish they would just extend to a 52 week season.
The whole bit with Arya and Tywin Lannister last season wasn't in the books, and it was pretty fantastic stuff.
I had a love hate view on that because as cool as it was, I hate when things are added when other canon stuff was left out.

I love the Kingslayer, but i dont understand where they're going with him. The entire series seems as though people kind of mock him and think he's a coward or something, but then you get scenes where people talk about his legendary sword skills. So i'm watching, thinking, Jaime is the reluctant hero who's about to rise to the occasion and prove how much of a bad ass he is.... then he gets his hand cut off...
I'm going to be pretty annoyed if Jaime doesnt become some incredible one hand swordsman. I'm also going to be kind of annoyed if he doesnt fist fuck every one of these dudes with his severed hand.
The guy playing Jaime is fantastic. These last two episodes, listening to him talk. The acting. The writing of the character. It's all been fantastic. Then they chop his hand off...

I say this a lot, but I think he's one of the most admirable characters in the series, honestly. The books really humanize him while respecting the fact that he was an incredible fighter.
You get to see his perspective a lot clearer and get to really know what was going through his head when he killed the mad king. People in Westeros are so caught up with this facade of honor that doesn't mean shit once you're dead, that they can't appreciate how truly grateful they should have been toward him. He knowingly dishonored himself and his family because of the kind of man he was that he couldn't stand idly by with all that he had heard and seen the king do. He took action, not seeking fame for what would ultimately earn him the nickname of Kingslayer, but because he truly believed what he was doing was right. Unfortunately, he will forever be known as Kingslayer.
At least, that was my understanding of his perspective. It's been a bit since I've read them now, and I realize my knowledge is starting to fade a bit.
One of my favorite parts is later when he is reading through the pages of the kingsguard ledger, or whatever it is. The history of each of the kingsguard, anyways.. and he reads through Ser Barristan's entry and there's all these things of note. And he realizes his legacy is that he was a Kingslayer. He's done nothing else of note, and everything that was, was completely overshadowed by what he had done to the king. You can see the gears turning, as if he really wants to right himself and create a legacy worth remembering.
Again, that's a shaky memory of what I read. It's been a while now and I can't recall the exact details.

Yeah, I don't necessarily think he 'knew' they would stay. I think he had to take the chance because Karstark forced his hand. He put Rob in a bind and forced him to make a decision that any honorable man in his position would have had to think very hard about. In the end, he did what his father would have done. Granted it had severe short-term consequences, but imagine the reputation hit in the long run if he had given him a slap on the wrist?
Instead, he did what he knew was right. Karstark had betrayed his trust with an emotional decision to murder two Lannister boys against the King's will. I can't really fault Rob at all for his decision. Would Karstark truly have respected Rob if he gave him a slap on the wrist? You could see the disrespect brewing immediately when he was brought in to face Rob. He acted like he knew exactly what was coming; a slap on the wrist from the pathetic king who wouldn't give him what he wanted.
This is slightly similar to the Umber situation, except that Umber had the good sense to know when he was put in his place and to pay respect when it was due. Karstark had a chance to put his faith in the King and trust that when the time came, he would have his revenge where it mattered; on the battlefield. Instead, he just gave the Lannisters the upper hand by getting himself beheaded and Rob losing his army and lords. Karstark did exactly the opposite of what he intended, by being a hotheaded idiot.

Well explained

Littlefinger is smart, unfortunately. That sly bastard...
Book spoiler:That fucker is brilliant. He started this entire series of events by getting Lysa to poison Jon Arryn, causing a chain reaction of people blaming other people and people preemptively reacting to that blame even though they didn't do it.
Also, Varys is smart enough to know everything about everyone while still managing to appear neutral to all of them.

Episode spoilers Wow, that brief scene with Joffrey and Ros was brutal. Totally didn't expect it, and she's been such a pleasant addition to the show, such a nice person, a whore working her way up from nothing. She had Lord Baelish to protect her, and then as soon as he's done with her he moves on and she has nothing again.
Wow.. just seeing that and realizing who it was made my jaw drop. Made me hate that cunt of a boy even more.
Edit: Its been brought to my attention that I missed what really happened. Apparently Littlefinger found out that she had been a spy for Varys and sold her back to Joffrey. Wow. :(

Knowing Joffrey, he probably saved the arrow to the chest for last.
I was reading a post on reddit that drew connections between some of the scenes this episode too.
Arya shooting her arrows at the straw man in the same places that joffrey shot Ros. Both for the same purpose, but both with different intentions and reasons.
The 'skinning' argument between the two women and Theon being skinned.
And more, but I can't think of them and I lost the comment.
But ugh.. that scene literally made me instantly sick to my stomach. I could watch Theon get flayed because he deserved it. It was cringe-worthy and you feel bad for him after the last couple episodes revealed an aspect we didn't get to see in the books. But seeing that brief reveal of what Joffrey did made my stomach drop and feel genuinely sad. :(
So wait, is that guy really a Karstark or did he lie about his identity/place they were as well? Anyone who has read the books understands why I ask this.

Yeah, he is definitely Ramsay Bolton, the Bastard of Bolton. I liked the little hint also when he told Theon 'That would be quite the hunt' when talking about the Stark boys, because part of his whole thing was live hunts followed by torture, rape, and dismemberment, which Roose 'tolerated' and 'chided' him for but never really cared about. His comment is a little more twisted when you realize he's not interested in hunting them simply to find them.

Also the scene where he lies is so much more fucked up since you know who he is. He is toying with Theon in twisted fashion, leading him on to believe that he's guessed right. Actually acting disappointed that he figured it out, when in reality he didn't guess anything. Then he pops up suddenly.. man, just standing so abruptly like that is enough to make your skin crawl when you know what he's about to do to Theon.

Something I've been wondering for a while:
How is this show directed? Each episode is attributed to a single director yet there are scenes set all across the fictional land and filmed across various locations. Read an article a couple weeks ago. Home base for the bulk of the seasons is filmed in Northern Ireland. Wall scenes are in Iceland. But these days since they're exploring more lands in they book, the production crews have hit Morocco, Malta, and Croatia.
Also, there's 3 production teams scattered across the continent/world shooting at the same time, codenamed "Dragon", "Wolf", and "Raven". 257 cast members, 703 crew members total. (credit to wikipedia.com)
I assume all production team heads report to whoever is directing the episode and he/she eventually calls the shots.

There are many theories that she was whisked away due to her supposedly being pregnant, suspected because of conflicting descriptions of her hips before and after she slept with Robb.
I would guess then, that it was done to dismiss such theories.

Read that George Martin wrote this scene last in the book. He skipped it when he was writing, finished the rest of the book and then came back to it. Also said he purposely didn't want to be involved too much in this episode because it hurt so much to write the first time that he just couldn't do it again. That's why he didn't write this episode like he has for a couple through the show's life, and like people thought he would since it is such an important episode.
I think the show did it justice though.

I'm assuming they will combine the events of Book 4 and 5 into the same seasons. The events in the books take place concurrently, and eventually combine somewhere through Book 5. They're just split into two books because there was so much content that he decided to split them like that.

I just really vehemently disliked the decision to kill off Robb and Catelyn. After reading like two and a half books, the driving impetus behind the whole thing felt to me for the remaining Stark clan to finally reunite and to give the Lannisters some comeuppance (perhaps with the help of Danaerys). Gets you all invested in the characters and then kills them off for little return other than the "shock factor", and a big part of the reason to actually keep reading the series is gone.
Requiem
06-04-2013, 12:45 AM
I never felt there was any singular plot driving the world or the books. There are so many stories happening, and we still have Starks left who are all performing their role in this whole world-altering struggle going on right now.
The Starks are obviously the 'hero' types, and we want to root for their family as they struggle to get by and as horrible things happen to them. But the rest of the people in the world are just as important. It's sort of the whole point of the series really - life happens, things don't always work out the way you hope. What goes around doesn't always come back around. They made a lot of stupid mistakes (Ned and Robb) based on values they put ahead of others. Were they wrong? No, but look how far it got them.
We get to see the contrast of that in people like the Freys, Boltons, and Lannisters. Money and power is worth more than just living and loving to these people. Even their own families are practically expendable at the drop of a hat.

Sounds like Lock Jaw just doesn't agree with this happening at all, not necessarily any differences. So what is it you don't agree with?
As someone like yourself who is up to date with the books, it honestly could not have gone smoother. The only thing that I think they SHOULD have done differently for a more (somehow) epic feel was
Season 3 Episode 9 Spoiler Below
Have Roose slide the sword through Robbs back and say the line
Heavy loading most of A Storm of Swords into this season. All of Dany's story from the book is pretty much complete.
So,
Since she's not even in book 4 is this the last we will see of Dany for two full seasons? I don't like the sound of that at all.
Chances are, they may include bits and pieces from her, remember that the show doesn't necessarily have to follow the narrative of the books since you are reading some POV chapters that may have took place a long time before the previous chapter.
I'm assuming they will combine the events of Book 4 and 5 into the same seasons. The events in the books take place concurrently, and eventually combine somewhere through Book 5. They're just split into two books because there was so much content that he decided to split them like that.
A Feast For Crows Spoiler
He could have at least left Tyrion in Book 4
I just really vehemently disliked the decision to kill off Robb and Catelyn. After reading like two and a half books, the driving impetus behind the whole thing felt to me for the remaining Stark clan to finally reunite and to give the Lannisters some comeuppance (perhaps with the help of Danaerys). Gets you all invested in the characters and then kills them off for little return other than the "shock factor", and a big part of the reason to actually keep reading the series is gone.
No it isn't. If you think characters you love dying is something that will cause you to stop reading, best do so now because if you think its all sunshine and lollipops later, you are sadly, sadly mistaken.
The Starks of course are looked at as the main plot characters, mostly due I think to the actions of Jaime setting off the chain of events. However that isn't to say that nothing would have happened without him showing Bran out the window.

And now, a terrible joke.
Why doesn't George RR Martin have a Twitter account?
He killed all 140 characters.

The major plot of the series is Ice vs Fire. Whatever else is going on in Westeros and Essos is going to play second fiddle to Dragons and the White Walkers.

I personally think it is just fantastic writing. If you really pay attention to the details, you can see it coming so long ago. It's like everyone secretly hopes that people wont receive consequences for making stupid decisions. We all want the happy storybook ending all the time, and here is a series that just won't give it to us. Characters are forced to live with every decision they make, good or bad. Others are just bystanders in those decisions and are affected by them.
Robb wasn't even TRYING to become king. He was trying to exact vengeance on the Lannisters for his father. There was his first mistake. It was a war of passion, not one where he bothered to really think about what he was doing and what it would lead to. He was fighting passionately against people who are thinking critically and treacherously to stop him. They were fighting for totally different reasons, and his just happened to keep him from doing what it took to truly be King. He thought once it was all over he could just hand the city over to someone and go back north and live the rest of his days. Come on, that's too perfect. That kind of shit never happens realistically.
