Also, was cool to learn how Littlefinger is The Higher Power that has been manipulating events from season 1....
They've been doing a slow build with him, but I can see him eventually becoming the biggest heel in Westeros.

good that you're back to reclaim this throne of a thread. I had to tell myself that they have to fit a lot of the book into these episodes, these last few eps are the first ones I have read ahead of and it adds a totally new joy to my viewing. The show feels condensed, but in a good way. When Peter and Sansa were on their way to the Vale(sp?) it was way longer and had an added stop to it, but I loved the way all those guards had arrows ready to fire if someone were to fart on their way past the Bloody Gate/Vale

Also - Not a book reader so dont spoil this at all for me, but I really want to get behind Tommen and Ser Pounce. Really hope he ends up as a force as king. Im sure it will take a years of being told what to do by Tywin and Cersei but when he finally says "NO" and drops stunners on 20-30 people in the Royal Court it is going to be epic.

Hanso Amore

I dont remember her acting like she did but it was so long ago.
My guess is if she did, its not to tip her hand. If she "could" kill Jon Arryn then she "could" kill Ned. If you are thought to do something horrible why not use that as a weapon?

So right now Littlefinger is both the Lord of the Riverlands after it was handed to him after the red wedding, and is also now the Lord of the Vale...So he has 2 of the 7 Kings under his control?
And with Sansa in theory being the Heir to Winterfell, if he finds a way to marry her he will have the 3 northern kingdoms on lockdown.

Yeah a lot of the far east stuff apparently doesn't even appear in the books, it's from a map collection that came out a couple of years ago.
Valyria is on the large map Jura posted, it's the brown/grey bit in the south about half way across the map with a reddish diagonal line thing across the top.

Fignuts

In that case, I definitely want to see Ulthos in the new books.
Asked whether this (Ulthos) was another continent, Martin replied, "Well, it's a large landmass. I am a little unclear on the formal definition of 'continent' as opposed to 'big island.' Also on the size of Ulthos, which after all sits at the edge of the known world. Terra incognita and all that.
Guy has no clue himself about it at this point. The 3rd continent, Sothoros, is more or less the Africa of that world.

The Jade sea has been moved up to be right of the Red Waste and whatever's to the right of it doesn't exist or isn't explored yet and Sothoryos the continent to the south is moved closer to Quarth.

Also, while I am already talking about book spoilers, I wonder what they are doing with Ser Jorah. By this time in the books, Dany had already exiled him from her company. I have a feeling that this week's small council with Tywin asking for some quill and parchment will lead to Jorah's downfall.

Some twisted perversion during one of the scenes, the Jaime/Cersei lockup by Joff's lifeless body in the audiobook I listened to. The old guy that narrates goes way too into it. Definitely a cringeworthy performance.

Either a big ass sword or Lena Headey is tiiiiiiny
The dude is about 6'9" and she is 5'5" so I'm guessing the sword is almost 65 inches long and the guard and hilt were probably made to fit his huge hands so it's bigger than normal. Swords back then were probably between 45 to 50 something inches long.

Back when dragons roamed the lands
Really? If you think I was saying "back then" as a reference to Game of Thrones being non-fiction then you are mistaken. I guess swords don't exist in real life. The influence of swords in almost every show or movie must be pure imagination. GoT is obviously influenced heavily by Medieval times of which I was referring to when I said "back then".

He was introduced at the beginning of the season. But yeah, someone mentioned something about the "twist" of who was going to fight for Tyrion.
Not such a huge twist that the guy who wants to kill The Mountain will go ahead and fight him.
Though I guess in the show it is more of a "twist" because Bronn was still around. In the books he was already off married.

It's a "twist" in the sense that Oberyn Martell hates and wants to kill all Lannisters, so the idea of him defending a Lannister in any sense is "unexpected."

Actor who plays Grenn was really underrated. His acting in the tunnel was brilliant. You could just see the fear in his eyes, and his speech was really heartfelt. I teared up when the giant was charging, because I knew what it would mean. Whole episode was brilliant.
As a book reader, I was pleasantly surprised by the combination of both wall attacks. They handled it really well, and it worked in a way that didn't ruin anything.

Thought that was all a bit boring for me, to be honest. Whole episode dedicated to a part of the story I don't care about at all. Some good action stuff obviously, but none of it really meant anything to me because they could've blown up every single person/giant/bald thing there and I'd have shrugged.
Like Triple A said, whole of season 4 seems to have gone by really quickly without anything really happening. Obviously that's an exaggeration but it seems to have just plodded along for 9 episodes.
Joffrey's death, Tyrion's death sentence, Daenerys capturing all of Slaver's Bay wasn't enough? Remember this was half a book and there are still an episode left.

All the Joffrey stuff which lead into the Tyrion stuff was great. Everything else very boring (again exaggerating as there's been some great scenes here and there).
I'm underselling the show a lot, I'm aware of that. It looks great and it's extremely well acted etc etc but it has a huge tendency to have 30 minutes of dreary, boring, interchangeable characters blabbering on and 20 minutes of amazing television each episode.
Requiem
06-09-2014, 07:07 PM
While I can see some of what you're saying as far as this season goes, this episode was anything but boring. Dunno how you can't be interested in what's going on at the wall. They're the unsung heroes of Westeros. You're falling into the same trap that the rest of Westeros has. Nobody there gives a shit about the wall, or their plights, struggles, or drama. But their struggle is the most real of anyone's. This episode was a way to show how legends are MADE, while the rest of the show has been about legends that already exist, or that already had their day in the sun.
We got to see two living legends duel to the death last episode, which ended in disappointment. While the lords of Westeros are playing their games, enjoying feasts and laughing amongst each other while painting Tyrion as their scapegoat, we get to see who the real men of Westeros are. The real heroes.
We see a group of forgotten boys and criminals, fighting not only for their lives and the lives of their brothers, but for all of Westeros. We got to see a boy fight a hulking monster of a man (Jon vs the Magnar), and come out alive on the other side. No disappointing end like the Viper vs Mountain fight. We get to see real retribution when Jon buries the hammer in the Magnar's skull. We see an army of a hundred thousand wildlings fighting for their own survival, and a cause they believe in wholeheartedly. Versus a group of dwindling soldiers who forsake their own desires in the name of brotherhood and sacred oaths.
Grenn dying in that tunnel like that was one of the most noble deaths in all the series up to now. His conversation with Jon when Jon sends him down there, and then the pause where Jon says that he has to hold the tunnel no matter way, was heart wrenching. You knew right then that Jon was ordering him to his death, but that it was for all of their benefits, because Grenn was the only one Jon could trust to get it done. Grenn was ready to die out of loyalty to Jon and his brothers, while Janos Slynt was the polar opposite and was off cowering in fear because he wasn't a true brother of the Night's Watch.
We get to see the different kinds of men that populate Westeros, in all the different places, in all walks of life. Even Alliser Thorne had his moment, going from someone we all hated, to someone you can't help but respect after his speech to Jon. Then we see how wholeheartedly he gives himself to defending The Wall when he throws himself fiercely at Tormund Giantsbane. He is a brother of the Night's Watch and takes his vows seriously.
I honestly thought this was one of the most well done episodes of the whole show, on so many levels and regardless of the liberties taken in things changed from the books (of which there were quite a few).
lol this was supposed to be THE episode of the season too.

They should've shown the guys holding the gate putting the Giant through a table and then rushing out the gate into the fray. It looked kind of sloppy to cut out and have Jon Snow find everyone dead at the end.
Requiem

Nah, that was the only way they should have done it. They left Grenn and the brothers as legends, dying while defending the gate from the king of giants. If they had shown it it would have just been another fight. Leaving it like that was a thing of beauty. You saw the fear in their eyes as the giant bore down on the them, and you just instantly know what happened.

Strong Belwas was a badass. The fact that Ser Barristan Selmy chose to disguise himself as the guy's squire speaks loads about how good Belwas is. Mother fucker allows his enemies to cut him once before he slaughters them.
Taken from the wiki of ice and fire.
When Daenerys besieges Meereen, Oznak zo Pahl rides out of the city on a white charger with a fourteen foot lance, challenging the besiegers to send forth a champion. Daenerys decides that Belwas is perfect since she can easily spare him, his death as an ex-slave would not give Oznak prestige, and a defeat to an ex-slave would be an insult. Belwas wounds Oznak's horse in the duel, leading to a sword fight. Belwas allows himself to be wounded in the stomach before he kills Oznak, severs his head, and holds it up high for those in Meereen to see. The defenders of the city fire arrows, but Belwas is too far away. He squats to defecate towards the city, wipes himself on Oznak's cloak, loots the corpse and kills the horse.
Later in the siege, Strong Belwas, Ser Barristan Selmy, Ser Jorah Mormont and twenty other men enter Meereen though the sewers to take the city. Some of the freedmen in the group are afraid of the huge rats until Belwas bites one of them in two. When they enter the city, Belwas leads the group to the nearest of the fighting pits, where they raise the fighting slaves to revolt, enabling Daenerys Targaryen to take the city. Later, when Daenerys dismisses Ser Jorah from her service, Belwas drags him out of her throne room.
He is later made a part of her queen's guard and is no less of a badass there either.

I didn't like that the reveal about Tysha, Tyrion's first wife was left out. I mean, I can understand it, I guess. He did mention it on the show, but it was so many seasons ago that the tv viewers probably don't remember/care anymore.

Ha ha, didn't even realize the irony of this airing on Father's Day.

How long have they planned to have that episode on Father's Day?

One thing about the ending,
Book Spoiler
I didn't like that the reveal about Tysha, Tyrion's first wife was left out. I mean, I can understand it, I guess. He did mention it on the show, but it was so many seasons ago that the tv viewers probably don't remember/care anymore.
If I recall correctly, though, Jamie reveals to him his role in it, and that it was a lie that Tysha was a whore... which is what sets him off. Feels like a much more powerful motivator, and he is also left hating Jamie.
Wherever whores go.

Haven't seen the episode yet, but wow. That's kind of his whole motivation for doing it.
Brienne is what 3-0 now? Loras, Jamie and the Hound.
