lol I like how now that the Red Sox are done ESPN has to create off-the-field stories about them. Like today IS MANNY INJURED OR IS MANNY BEING MANNY?!?! WHAT DOES BIG PAPI HAVE TO SAY ABOUT HIS DISGRUNTLED TEAMMATE? PLUS MORE FOOTAGE OF TERRELL OWENS RIDING A STATIONARY BIKE WOOOOO
ROFL. yea the Owens bike thing is hillarious.

If the Phillies end up making the playoffs Ryan Howard has to be NL MVP.

NL MVP is pujols
Gertner
08-25-2006, 10:51 PM
Back from the DL, Chacin still as terrible as usual. 5 ER in 1.1 innings, I think that might have actually been better than his 5 rehab starts in AAA. So with no injury anymore what's your excuse now, Gertner?
first start after being on the dl for ages. give him another start . he'll be back

Twins overtake Chicago for the WC lead, they've got the potential to tear it up in the playoffs if Liriano, Santana and Radke are all healthy and doing what they've done this year.
Joey Slugs

They have a 1/2 game lead now. Let's not jump the gun here.
Notice the word potential Joey:p
I think the Twins would do more in the postseason than Chicago as things stand, but there's a month to go so who knows, I can't see Detroit going all the way this time, I reckon it'll be between the WC and East winners when it comes down to it, assuming Detroit do win the Central. Although the A's are on a tear right now, 22 of 28 or something, they might finally do what they've been threatening to for a decade...

Lots of time left for the Jays to win this game, but come on!
Nah man the Jays won't fall off

Nick Punto.
The Twins are playing White Sox of '05 ball right now. We are winning the close games and just getting all the breaks. This series definately isn't going to set the wildcard, I think it will come down to the last week, but if the Twins continue to play at this pace, even without Liriano, I think the Twins would be the best bet. Garza will only get better win more starts, as long as Radke doesn't break something he is very solid, and the bullpen is probably the best in baseball right now. Also, the batting order is good 1-9 right now, even the Tyner, White and Bartlett's are connecting. The only problem is if the starting pitching hits the wall before the break, with Garza being a rookie and Radke batting shoulder problems. It is going to be a fun last month though, as I am pretty sure the Tigers, Twins and Sox play each other quite a bit.

I know it's cool to bash Beltre because his offensive numbers have nosedived, but he's not *that* bad.
Saying they nosedived implies he was an offensive powerhouse, he was infact a one-year wonder.
And yeah he's not THAT bad, but come on what the fuck was that season all about?

ct2k, his 2005 numbers were better than those in 2003, what's your point?
Jesus Shuttlesworth
08-28-2006, 03:55 PM
His numbers are pretty similar in 2003/2005. So 2004 was a fluke, pretty obvious what his point was.
His numbers besides 2004 are incredibly average, 290 OBP? Come on. He has been better this year, but still, I don't get it. To me a fluke is Orlando Hernandez hitting a grand slam, Beltre must've had a season full of flukes:|

Beltre has been that bad. He ranked 10th in both OBP and SLG last year out of 11 AL 3B, beating only Aaron Boone. This year he is currently ranked 9th in OBP behind Crede and Inge, who unlike Beltre, play stellar defense. He is one of the 2 or 3 worst third-basemen in the AL, offensively and defensively (thank god for Beltre third base is one of Figgins' 57 positions).
I don't think I have to bring up the kazillion dollar contract
I bet he's fucking brilliant on triple play 2007 or whatever

The Red Sox lineup is hilarious, Loretta the DH with Lowell batting clean up.
Injuries hit right at the worse time, they where playing pretty awful anyway, then they get hit with the injury bug. I was pretty wrong about Veritek though, I thought he wouldn't be that big of a loss because his offensive numbers where pretty shitty but the pitching has been pretty awful without him behind the plate.

Yup, A-Rod is like 1-for his last 23 or something like that. I don't even know what to think because the fans have been actually supporting him at home lately.
The good thing is that his defense has been solid lately. The thing that gets me mad the most is that he can't get a man in from 3rd with less than 2 outs, he can't get a long fly ball most of the time. I think he's second to last in the league behind Michael Cuddyer in that category, he could be last now. Just ridiculous though when a good game for him is not making a couple errors. People are happy when he only makes one out and doesn't ground into a double play which is ridiculous.

Also, yesterdays game was ours to take but we get a glimpse of what life is without Mariano. Torre brought in Proctor for the save because Rivera pitched the earlier game, and Proctor proceeds to give up a 3 run home run.
Mo had a quick inning the first game so he could have went out in the night game. But Torre does weird stuff like that, I remember a week back or something he said he wouldn't use Mo in two innings again during the regular season and then the game that night he used him for two innings lol.
I dunno, the day Mariano calls it quits is gonna be a tough day for Yankees fans.
We need a 1-2-3 punch like we had with Quantrill and Gordon in the bullpen, those guys were workhorses, Gordon was almost as lights-out as Rivera.
Villone has been solid for us this year, and tbh Proctor and Farnsworth have done a good job too, Myers is a great guy to have for the lefties too. It could be worse :-\
But I agree, Rivera only threw 14 pitches in game 1 so I dunno why he wanted to rest him so badly, he's thrown triple that number in outings before and done consecutive nights work.
Dragon
08-31-2006, 01:38 PM
Yeah, our bullpen is really solid but they falter when they get overworked so much. I think Proctor, Villone and Farnsworth are in the top 4 or 5 in appearances which is crazy.
Proctor was lights out in the beginning of the year and then he got tired and was bad for about a month, he's been much better after the break and some rest. Villone has been solid all year but you can tell he's tired now which isn't good for the postseason. He pitches like 2-3 innings a couple times a week. Farnsworth has never been consistant this year so I don't know about him.
Mike Myers seems like a waste, a lot of the times I've seen him come in he walks/gives up a hit to a left-hander he's supposed to get out and then is taken out because that is all he can get out.
Torre's weakness is definitely in how he handles the bullpen.
Dragon

Also Jaret Wright doesn't help the pen by going 4-5 innings in his starts. He saw unchartered territory by going into the 7th yesterday lol
I reckon right now pitching wise we're doin good, hopefully Pavano will get a few appearances and settle in before it comes down to the playoffs. But even if Pavano is rocky, having him, Lidle and Wright to choose from for 4th, maybe put one in the bullpen, that could be a lot worse.

The earlier, more legit rumors were about a catcher named Geroge Kotteras, supposed to be one of the top 2 or 3 catching prospects in baseball. Dodgers offered Andy LaRoche who is an elite prospect. That would've been insane to give Little LaRoche up for one month of Wells.

Yankees–Red Sox Rivalry Running Dangerously Low On Storylines
August 24, 2006 | Onion Sports
BOSTON—As the long-running Yankees–Red Sox rivalry nears the end of its 104th season, the popular feud that once provided fans with visceral, emotionally charged drama, larger-than-life heroes and villains, and compelling subplots carefully woven throughout its overarching story arc could only offer those who tuned in last weekend a series of five baseball contests between two American League East teams vying for first place.
"This rivalry has stayed fresh and unpredictable for a long time, and gave us a lot of memorable moments, like the trade of Babe Ruth, the heroics of Bucky Dent, and Curt Schilling's bloody sock, but lately it has resorted to using recycled content from its own history," ESPN analyst Buster Olney said, referring to this past weekend's devastating second-half Yankee sweep lifted directly from the 1978 season. "It has simply run its course."
The first 100 seasons of the rivalry were carefully crafted to build toward one defining moment, which occurred in the 2004 AL finale when the luckless but lovable Red Sox finally defeated the rich, cocky but undeniably talented Yankees in the ALCS before winning the World Series and ending the "Curse Of The Bambino" story thread that was written into the series in 1918. Experts, however, suggest that since that moment, the rivalry has struggled to regain the dramatic tension and nuanced conflict that was once intrinsic to meetings between the two teams.
"Plot points such as Wily Mo Pena's multi-hit game, Johnny Damon's much-heralded 'third return' to Fenway Park, and [Red Sox third-baseman] Mike Lowell's unlikely statistical dominance over Mike Mussina are simply not resonating with the fans the same way that Pedro Martinez grabbing Don Zimmer's head and throwing him to the ground once did," Peter Gammons said. "Fans are growing weary of having every game end the same exact way—the third and final out of the ninth inning being recorded."
"I guess the one big story you could take from this series is that Friday night's matchup, at nearly five hours, was the longest nine-inning game in major-league history," Gammons added. "And believe me, I felt every minute of it."
Sensing that things needed to be shaken up, the Yankees brought veteran Bobby Abreu onto the cast as a midseason replacement for right-fielder Gary Sheffield. However, while Sheffield was a central figure in many conflicts—including the 2004 episode in which he took a swing at a Red Sox fan in the right-field bleachers—the most noteworthy thing Abreu has done in his stint with the Yankees is double home the go-ahead run in Monday's victory.
"Some of the ideas for the subplots have potential, but the execution is all wrong," New York Daily News sports columnist Mike Lupica said. "For instance, in the game entitled 'Cory Lidle Earns His Pinstripes,' it would have been far more interesting if he cemented his place in Yankee lore by decking a Boston batter who was charging the mound, rather than simply pitching six quality scoreless innings en route to a tightly played, nine-inning victory."
"That's not what people tuned in to see," Lupica added.
Fans have called for increased production of serviceable storylines, saying they don't want their last memory of the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry to be the May 2006 incident in which Doug Mirabelli was escorted to Fenway Park by a Boston police car 14 minutes before game time so that the newly acquired backup catcher could make his Red Sox return and prevent passed balls during the first seven innings of a Tim Wakefield start.
"Before the final out of Monday's routine 1-2-3 ninth inning, I was waiting for some sort of disputed play at the plate, fistfight, bench-clearing brawl, fan interference, overturned home-run ruling, bad managerial decision, heroic walk-off hit by a virtually unknown role player, blatantly missed call, blood—something to talk about around the water cooler besides the events that occurred on the field of play and the game's final outcome," said Red Sox fan Tom Mizone. "If original scenarios like these stop occurring, there's nothing left but two major-league teams trying to win ballgames. Why would I want to see that? The pitching? The delicate balance of raw power, speed, and agility?"
"True fans of the series know those are no reasons to watch a Yankees-Red Sox game," he added.

Ken Griffey Jr. Diagnosed With Hamstring Cancer
August 24, 2006 | Onion Sports
CINCINNATI—Just days after the Reds centerfielder learned that his father Ken Sr. has prostate cancer and his mother Birdie would be undergoing surgery for colon cancer, a routine medical checkup Tuesday resulted in more bad news for Ken Griffey Jr., as doctors found a large malignant tumor on his right semitendinosus hamstring muscle. "This is the rarest and deadliest form of hamstring cancer," Reds trainer Mark Mann said. "The only way to eradicate the cancer is to go in and slice the three hamstring muscles completely in half and permanently remove them—as well as the three titanium screws holding them in place—from his leg." Next Wednesday, Griffey Jr. and Griffey Sr. are expected to become the first father-son duo to undergo chemotherapy together.

Also, Torre has no sense of how to use the bullpen. We have a 7 run lead and he keeps putting Proctor (our 2nd best reliever and the most worked reliever) in these types of games. Ridiculous, our pen is gonna be shit in the postseason if this keeps up. It's especially stupid when the rosters have expanded and we brought up some relievers for just these situations.

Yeah man errors are an awesome way to determine the gold glove. Chavez is so much better than him its ridiculous, Lowell is definately above average but Chavez and Rolen are just in a league of their own, best defensive 3Bs since Mike Schmidt. Joe Crede is also better.
He had a nice offensive season but his numbers are not that of the other candidates. Jim Thome, Frank Thomas > Mike Lowell

Why does Gibbons keep pulling Halladay once he gets the lead? For the life of me, I can't understand this guy. IN Halladay's last 3or4 starts, the bullpen has blown the lead he fought all game to get. Oh, or Rios throws the ball into the stands after semi catching it, causing it to become a 2 run HR. I know wins aren't the true measure of a pitcher, but I feel for Halladay, because he's deserving of 20 win seasons. He's deserving of those traditional milestones.

Why do people care about the MVP? If it comes down to say 2 guys, and "Guy A" wins it, and "Guy B" doesn't, it doesn't make "Guy B" anyless of a player. I really don't care about what a bunch of writers vote on, personal awards are pretty pointless in team sports anyway.

Just checked out the stats since I hadn't looked yet, Lowell has .987 FPCT (.004 behind Chavez) with 53 more chances. Not saying this makes him a lock or something since it doesn't, but I still don't see how saying Lowell should get the Gold Glove is ridiculous.
Jesus Shuttlesworth
09-05-2006, 11:19 PM
I just noticed I am in a discussion about a Gold Glove while saying I don't care about the MVP lol, kinda weird
But like I said about the MVP is true about the Gold Glove, people aren't gonna think Chavez is miles ahead of Lowell or Crede if he wins or vice versa - so even that is kind of dumb now that I look at it.
FakeLaser

You're just saying all this because David Ortiz isn't going to win it again.
The Miz
09-05-2006, 11:27 PM
It isn't even close. Chavez and Rolen are in a completely different class among third-basemen; they will go down as 2 of the greatest ever. Lowell is good but fielding percentage stats aren't going to tell you how good a guy is at turning a double play, how his range is, etc. All things that anyone could see Chavez > Lowell.
Fielding is not hitting, there still aren't any good metrics out there.
Jesus Shuttlesworth
09-05-2006, 11:28 PM
Nah I already stated I don't care if Ortiz even won it (pretty sure in this thread too) I don't think Ortiz would get enough votes to win even if he did have a monster season since he is a DH.
Actaully the only reason I'd wish Ortiz would win it is so a player from the Yankees couldn't. If Jeter does end up winning it though, hopefully he comes off his MVP season by leading the league in errors the next season.
Jesus Shuttlesworth
09-05-2006, 11:31 PM
Chavez and Rolen maybe 2 of the bests, but saying Lowell isn't a canidate for the Gold Glove this season is pretty dumb when he has been making pretty amazing plays this entire year.

Wow, I seriously don't know what goes through Joe Torre's mind sometimes when it comes to the bullpen. The pen is going to be dead when the playoffs come around.
Here we are with an 8-0 lead against the Royals and the most logical choice for Torre is to use our best available and most overworked bullpen guy in Scott Proctor, even though we have about 6 other relievers that don't pitch. With Mo down for a bit and Villone's arm ready to fall off I guess its Proctor's turn to again be used in every single game.

Is there a reason why Howard is a bona-fide clean player? MLB's apparent crackdown has been a joke, so I don't see why Howard is automatically percieved as the first "clean" player to do it.
Another thing, I just saw a column on ESPN.com that said the Yankees will go far in the playoffs because they have good pitching. It then went on to show statistics with the Yankees team ERA being fourth of the five AL playoff contenders, and made a bunch of other rediculous claims. One being that the Twins can't/won't make the playoffs without Liriano. Umm...that argument really hasn't held up. It also implied that Brad Radke was a burden, ok guy. What would compel you to write that the Yankees pitching gives them an advantage in the AL playoffs?
Radke's not exactly been Mr Consistency through the years but he's been great for the Twins this season and I sure as hell don't wanna face Santana/Liriano/Radke in the first round:|
