Even tho it is dominated by Red Sox players and I am a Red Sox fan, the fan voting is pretty stupid. Red Sox and Yankees obviously have the most fans in baseball so it isn't really fair at all.

Moose pitches a great game for the Yanks.
Has a complete game, giving up one unearned run in the 9th. Definitely something the bullpen needed because its been worked to death lately.

Great showing again by the relievers brought in from the farm system for the Sox (Papelbon obviously but Declaremen and Van Buren as well) Pauley started out alright the first innings. I mean 2 ER isn't terrible for your first 4 innings in the majors EVER but then he gave up 4 runs in 1/3 of an inning which was pretty rough.
Hopefully Pauley learns from this experience and developes into another good young arm in the Red Sox system. I can't wait for Craig Hanson to be ready to be a starter, they've been stretching him out down in double A ball since they obviously don't need a closer anymore. He was suppose to be one of the top picks in last years draft but due to signability issues the Red Sox where able to snag him late in the first round.

Is Papelbon staying their closer when Hansen comes up? Obviously he is pretty unhittable right now and doing great as their closer but I thought I heard Hansen was more suitable as the closer with Papelbon being able to contribute to the starting rotation more.
Seems pretty tough to take Papelbon out of the closer role if he is this dominant or anything close to it this year but I thought I've read many people thinking he'll be in the rotation next year. BTW, not sure how far developed Hansen is, how far away is he projected from being called up?

Obviously he will be their closer this year but I am talking about next year more or less.

Wow. Francisco Lariano had a no-hitter going into the seventh and he lost it on a horrible call. Last night there were a couple close calls against the Twins baserunners, but today, with a no-hitter on the line, they called Cabrera safe when replays clearly showed he was out.
Lariano is so good though. After that he got flustered and threw a wild pitch (runners move to second and third) and went down 3-1 to Garrett Anderson with one out. Lariano then strikes out Anderson and Kubel catches a crazy golf hit by Vlad right at the wall.
Twins defense has really come through today though. As I am typing this, Anderson just hit a deep ball and Ford made a great jumping catch against the wall. I thought for sure it was gone.

Well, as far as I know, if Papelbon continues to keep doing what he has been doing in the closers role they really aren't planning on taking him out of it. Francona said it is something "special" so you can't really pull the plug on that. Hansen was more suitable for the role when taking about potential, but Papelbon is doing it right now in the majors and Hansen was expected to do it.
Hanson has been getting "stretched" more and more this season in the minors, last I heard he pitched 4 innings in one game. I am pretty sure they are planning on getting him comfortable and putting into a starting pitching role. I really can't see him starting a game for the Red Sox until next season, but there is a good chance he could get called up to be a reliever at some point this season. He was already called up last season, so I would think the possiblity of it happening again is even greater.
Red Sox best pitching prospect right now is probably Jon Lester, he was actaully rated ahead of Papelbon last season. He is a left handed starting pitcher who could be called up at some point this season, they are really grooming him down in the minors right now though. He is suppose to be the next big thing, but we'll see if he pans out. Red Sox also have Abe Alvarez who was used as a starter last season and has been called up this season as well as a reliever. Plus the guy they had start tonight was only 22 years old, so the future could be pretty interesting pitching wise. Red Sox surprising still have a lot of good prospects left after trading away a lot in a couple deals over the summer.

Finally. I swear the Twins are going to pull an Oakland and make some sort of a run in the second half. Lariano and Boof Bonser have both been dominant along with Johan and if Radke can be decent...I'm not saying the Twins will even make the playoffs, and the world would be spinning backwards if they won the division, but I really think we can finish second in the AL Central.

Double plays seem to happen when you got the best fielding percentage in the majors though.
And Manny was doing okay in the field up until last night really, he hadn't commited error until the the past series with the Jays
I am more surprised the Red Sox won yesterday and did not win the day before. I figured with Beckett on the mound they would have won then last night Lily was on the hill for the Jays and he usually always shuts the Sox down.
Gertner

jays have lit up beckett though this year. yeah i was totally surprised lilly pitched bad. PErhaps the humidity affected his curveball cause that's his out pitch and it seemed to be slipping out of his hand

Sheff is on the DL again and will be out at least a couple of weeks and might need surgery if his wrist doesn't respond well to a splint.
Jeter hasn't played in a couple days because of an injury. Posada and Damon are battling injuries.
So, out of our opening day starters, basically A-Rod, Cano and Giambi are healthy. Thankfully Melky has stepped up in Matsui's place.
The thing is that the lineup has been great lately though, getting plenty of runs with A-Rod and Giambi heating up again. But due to Mariano feeling pain in his back today Farnsworth had to pitch the 9th, gives up two runs and gives us the loss.

Holy shit did Santana dominate. Saarloos was awesome too, each pitcher made only one mistake, but Saarloo's mistake came with a man on and Santana's came with the bases empty. Difference in the game.
A's pitching is flat out dominating right now. CG shutout from Blanton, 7 scoreless from Zito, 2 runs in 8 from Saarloos, 6 scoreless today from Haren. And Harden is coming back tomorrow. If they're going to go on a huge run like they always do the starting pitching's gotta be there.

I can't tell if the Twins/A's was good pitching or bad hitting. Probably both.
The Miz
06-04-2006, 01:27 AM
Definately both. Zito and Santana are obviously top pitchers but the Twins should be able to manage a run against Zito and the A's should be able to get more than 2 hits off Santana.
The Twins offensive approach vs. Saarloos was terrible. He had like 73 pitches through 7 innings or something like that. The lack of discipline was amazing, did they not have any idea that Saarloos walked 7 guys last start? If you work the count against Saarloos he will walk you because the sinker is going to be a ball low most of the time. He pitched well but Saarloos is not a guy who should ever reach the 8th inning without having given up a run.
Bonser looked really good but he clearly needs to work on locating the fastball. The pitches to Thomas, Kotsay, and Johnson were crap. His stuff looked good though. Liriano/Bonser/Nathan for Pierzynski is officially the worst trade in MLB history.

He just got called up to the A's actually because Mark Ellis broke his thumb. He's not going to play though, they called him up earlier when someone was injured and he never got in a game. But he has been hitting really well in AAA. His prospect status has taken a big hit the last three years because he was in AA from 2003-2005 and never hit well. "Lack of bat speed" has been the reason cited by most scouts. He's 26 now and his ceiling looks like that of a good backup catcher.

06-04-2006, 04:25 PM
This next series against the Red Sox could be pretty bad. We have won 9 out of our last 11 I believe (not counting the game right now) with a depleted lineup and bullpen which is impressive, but I don't see it happening against the Red Sox.
Our lineup in this game right now is:
1) Stinett
2) Cabrera
3) Thompson
4) A-Rod
5) Posada
6) Cano
7) Phillips
8) Long
9) Cairo
Pretty solid, lol. Granted, the game is a blowout so Damon was just taken out to get some rest, but Jeter was taken out with an injury.

06-04-2006, 05:48 PM
It's funny because the Twins upcoming schedule (which features the other AL West teams) is being called the chance to pick up some serious ground in the division. Bring it on Angels and A's.
So much for that. :p If the A's bullpen doesn't fuck this up its gonna be a 2-5 road trip for the Twinkies.

Red Sox back in first
Clement looked good (Gave up 3 ER in 6) but he had to come out of the game, said it was not due to an injury though. So I dunno what the deal is there. If the Red Sox could just get something out of Clement on a regular basis that'd be huge, because right now the #5 starter is pretty much an automatic loss. (Pauly is slated to pitch again on Thrusday in Yankee Stadium, that should be real interesting)

Doesn't he already have 10 ER?
I thought most closer usually finished up with 20 or less in the earned run department? Not saying he can't turn it around or that he is horrible but he looked pretty shaky thus far. Alteast stats wise, 3 blown saves and June just started. His season total was 4 last year.

haha you can't really blame them though, look at the American League All Star team fan voting.
I am sure they would the do same for a Tigers/Twins seriese if people watched, I don't really get why people complain. What do you want ESPN to put on games not a lot of people watch? That'd be a good idea, they'd get ton of interest from sponsors.

If the Twins could even go .500 on the road we would be the wildcard team. It is rediculous how bad the offense has been on this road trip. Hunter is cooling off, Cuddyer is ice cold and even Castillo has slowed down. We need Stewart back (but they say it's going to be maybe 15 more days) or else we need prospects to start hitting at the major league level.
By the way, I can see Ozzie Guillen taking a boat load of White Sox with him to the All Star Game, he said today he might take as many as 10. Now that might be high, but if he starts doing shit like AJ Pierzynski over Joe Mauer, shit is going to hit the fan.

Are you taking him serious? It was a joke in response to the question: "How does he feel about the possibility of coaching an all Yankees and red Sox starting line-up for the All Star game?" His response was along the lines of "Sure. That's fine. I'll coach them all. It's an honor to be able to coach an All Star game, but if they let me... I am not very smart in terms of college baseball, but I finally figured out how the tournament works. It was disappointing that Mizzou wasn't very good this year because we were preseason top 10 in one publication and beat No. 2 Florida right off the bat, but now things are really coming together. We swept Texas to end the regular season, dominated OU and OSU in the Big 12 Tournament and now just won three straight elimination games to be the first ever No. 4 seed to make the super regionals. I really think that Max Scherzer and Nate Culp couldget us to the CWS, which would be amazing, but Cal State Fullerton is damn good.
Anyway, college baseball is cool, but it is really hard to be very knowledgeable about it because it gets such little publicity and some of the best teams are from kind of random schools. Nonetheless, we have a pretty cool stadium at Mizzou and the games are fun to go to, it's just quality baseball when you're in a college town.
The Miz
06-06-2006, 06:22 PM

Do you know anything about Max Scherzer? He was Big 12 Pitcher of the Year and a bunch of other stuff last year, was in a who's who of baseball earlier this year in Sports Illustrated as the possible first overall pick, but then some injuries dropped him to 11. The only reason I ask is because I always figured he would be a starter, but the MLB.com scouting report said he might make the majors as a short inning reliever.

Prob. has nothing to do with the team at all, usually it contracted out to a company (possibly Aromark, that is what it is at Fenway) so your best bet would be to figure out which company it is contracted out to and try to get a job that way. This isn't a Yankee thing but like, Jeter hits for average, usually 300+, so if he's a roidhead why's he only get around 20-25 homers a year? Also he's well over 6ft, if he was packed with muscle, hitting with average AND power, surely he'd be getting extra homers just by virtue of a few fly balls and line drives going a bit further?

Sheffield is having surgery soon I believe. I think a lot depends on when he comes back from that, if he misses a lot of time you have to assume the Yankees won't resign him, especially if Melky continues to play well.
I think he'll miss quite a bit of time though, but even if he doesn't and Melky continues playing well it seems useless to resign him. I would definitely rather see Melky out there next year in right, so the only spot for Sheff would be DH. But we also have Giambi, Damon and probably Matsui that are going to need DH days. He would also be quite an expensive DH.

From my understanding, correct me if I'm wrong, but just taking steroids doesn't make you strong. Their biggest impact is that they basically speed up recovery, meaning that they allow you to lift a lot more etc. Maybe I am thinking of something specific, but I think that is one of the primary advantages.

Schilling pitched well tonight but still gave up 3 solo homers (Only 3 runs he gave up in 8) I dunno what the deal is but he has been giving up a shitload of homeruns it seems. Veritek hitting a homer was big, he actaully went 3 for 5 in tonight's game so hopefully his slump is over now.
Something I noticed about the Yanks, I like how a lot of people point out their injuries and how surprised they are with their success, I'm really not surprised at all. People even go as far as calling them the "Columbus Clippers" so apparently Damon, A-Rod, Jeter (been hurt for the last few games but has been playing/as far as I know is not on the DL?) Giambi, Cano, and Posada are all minor league hitters or something. You could even throw Berine Williams in there, he isn't what he used to be (obviously) but he is still a pretty decent player. So get production out of one of the "other guys" and you have a pretty ridiculous line up. Even with the other guys not doing shit the offense would still be pretty deadly.

Mike Rouse is the man.
It only took 47 pitches to get out of that inning.

i'll agree with the miz on that one. wells and ichiro over vlad.
But we can all agree that Chone "I play 6 positions and suck at all of them" Figgins and his .322 OBP from the leadoff spot should be the leading vote getter
Jesus Shuttlesworth

Yeah fan voting is pretty bad in all sports, but this baseball one seems to be really awful. You can blame the promotional departments of the teams though, have been advertising the all star voting a lot (Well I can speak for the Red Sox anyways) If I was MLB I'd just lie and say they were was a fan vote and not even count them

We do that shit at the store I work at, we get these "Give aways" from Budweiser, like Jerseys, Snowboards, Grills, all types of shit. Never even give them away though, I just laugh at people when they fill out the little form.

Josh Towers is doing really good in AAA and he'll be called up for Chacin's spot. The JAys have also called up a pair of bullpen guys since they've been using their bullpen a ton as of late.

Well Red Sox top prospect Lester did kinda what I expected him to do. Only gave up 3 earned, but could only get through 4.1 innings after throwing 100 pitches. Not really surprised since he has had some control issues in the minors and has always seemed to throw a lot of pitches to get guys out. Not bad for his first start in the majors though

I swear.... once the switch happens in the AL Central.... there is no looking back.
Tigers are hanging on by the skin of their teeth now.
Hey Toronto, do me a favor will ya? Finish these fuckers off. Bad enough I have to root for the Cubs next weekend.

David Ortiz is the most clutch hitter in baseball
3 run jack in the 9th...suck it Otsuka
He's also a fat heff;)
But yeah i like Ortiz, even though he's a red sock

Batting like .260. :(
Thats still a lot better than Frank "I used to be a 300 guy but now i hit like Jose Canseco" Thomas, poor fella
The Miz
06-11-2006, 06:23 PM
Why are you comparing Ortiz to Thomas? A 30-year-old in the prime of both his natural and chemical career vs. a 40-year-old 10 years past his prime?
And I cannot believe that there are still people other than Joe Morgan that don't realize this, but it does not matter what your batting average is if you get on-base at the rate that those sluggers do. But if you want a nice .303 hitter like Pudge Rodriguez (.336 on-base) over a guy hitting in the .230-.260 range with a .360-.380 OBP, be my guest.
The Miz
06-11-2006, 06:28 PM
And for $500,000 (not a typo), Thomas has provided 16 home runs, an OBP of .352, and a slugging percentage of .525. He puts up these numbers in the cleanup spot where he provides protection for Eric Chavez, who for the first time in his 8-year MLB career is getting off to a great start (.362/.518, 13 homers). He has single-handedly carried the A's the last month while Chavez and Swisher came back to earth and the rest of the team still couldn't hit.
If only he could get that average up.

Twins dropped the ball when they let Thomas go, those numbers would have fit in perfectly with us, and it would have been a hot-point when we play the Sox. Meh, at least we got Rondell White!

wow. a 6 run ninth and we get the winning run on deck after being down 10-2. a loss is still a loss... but if that doesn't jump start this offense, nothing will.

The only thing, Miz about your post is this. An Ortiz or a Thomas are not signed to draw walks. They're there to put the ball in play with power. Don't get me wrong, as you are correct... certain type of players excluded.
We could debate the finer points of this if you like, but you know what I'm saying.
The Miz
06-12-2006, 03:16 PM
What do you expect them to do when pitchers don't throw them strikes? There are two types of hitters that draw alot of walks, the big sluggers who are feared by the pitchers (Bonds, Pujols, Ramirez, Giambi, etc.) and the guys who have amazing plate discipline and will gladly take 1st if the pitcher doesn't throw them something they can drive (BGiles, Hatteberg, Youkilis, NJohnson, etc.). Thomas was signed to hit home runs and drive in runs, you are right. And he's doing that, 16 homers and 37 RBI. But what's great is when he isn't hitting the ball out or driving in runs, he's getting on base. And getting on base is never a bad thing no matter how big and slow you are.
If Thomas was getting on base at a great rate but not hitting with lots of power, I would agree with you completely. He was signed to hit home runs. But he's doing both things very well and that's why he's been extremely valuable.
You're right Miz, but i wasn't comparing them so much as having a pop at Thomas, but not a particularly serious one seeing as i like the guy.

I love the fact that Grimsely is now suspended for 50 games yet he is no longer in the league.

Know what's funny, the Twins easily could have traded for Thome or Blalock last summer or else signed Thomas. We are such cheap asses, we have pitchers galore in the minors, some who will be ready to pitch in the Majors real soon but we wouldn't trade Lohse or Baker.

I was making a general statement, not picking on anyone in particular. It only came up by me now, because it was topical. It seems to me, we agree on this point and have simply gone into finer detail about it.

Well it would be a stretch too far for the MLB to actually suspend a major player now wouldn't it

!!!!!
I was just reading the newspaper and I got to the end where they have the lines. I usually check just to see what the Twins are, and I was kind of surprised because we had the line over the Red Sox. Going to the game, I got excited because I figured Johan must be pitching, but then I find out not only is he pitching, but against Schilling! I've seen Johan pitch three times I think, but never against such strong competition. Looking forward to tonight.
That's my story.

Schilling vs. Santana tonight
I've always been curious as to why they're called pitching matchups, when you can't really pitch against another pitcher (apart from at bats obviously)...I dunno i'm a nitpicker:p

Fixed. I had Clemons in my mind because he is the biggest pitcher I've seen (long time ago when he was w/ the Red Sox). My bad. Still pumped.
Yeah it should be a good game. Hopefully it'll be on at the gym tonight.

Adam Kennedy is heavily rumored to be traded before the deadline, possibly to the Blue Jays. Jeff Weaver ( :| ) has also been rumored to the Jays but I don't see that happening
The Icon of Elisim
06-13-2006, 07:24 PM
Ya they've been talking about a Hillenbrand for Kennedy trade for a while, especially after the Jays moved Russ Adams to the minors and moved Aaron Hill to SS. Adams just got called back up and is starting at second. They arent going to give up on him but Im sure they would send him back to AAA if he struggles some more.
I guess if Hillenbrand is traded we'd have Hinske as our regular DH which is pretty bleh
