I hate this Reds vs Brewers series. I want the Reds to lose badly, but the Brewers are quietly red hot and creeping up the central.

Greinke and the Royals are getting fucking mauled by the Twins right now.
Brewers win. 8-2 in there last 10
Cubs still have 16 total games left against the Reds and Cards. Maybe they're not out. They need to win every single one though lol.

Dan Haren hurt in 1st game after being traded from D'backs to L.A. Angels.
Line drive hit back to him hits his pitching arm and forces him out of the game in the 5th inning.

It also led to Tim McCarver disecting AJ Burnett's pie throwing to Swisher when Burnett was injured...later to be found he punched a door.

I don't think that's what he was saying. I believe he was just looking for any reason to take a baseball story that does not involve the Baltimore Orioles to try to relate it to the Baltimore Orioles.

I just found it funny that the guy can go out and give up 4 hrs and 7 runs to the anemic Orioles offense that can't do shit lately and then come back 5 days later and pitch a no hitter vs a Tigers team that is much better offensively. You would think he'd pitch the no hitter vs the Orioles and get blasted by the Tigers. Its just funny how baseball works, no real explanation for it.

The Os are on the verge of losing to the Blue Jays again, moving to 0-11 this season. I cannot find the info on when the last time a team lost a season series to another team within their own division since they started playing unbalanced schedules and playing each other 18 times a year.
Rep for someone who can find out if going 0-18 would be a record or not.
Yankees went 0-12 vs the A's in 1990.

I only checked going back to 2003 with the Tigers and 2004 with the Dbacks since both owned the worst records (ESPN only goes back to 2002 for extended records), Diamondbacks managed 3 wins in 19 games vs Dodgers.
Tigers only managed 4 wins in 19 games while both teams did end the season win-less against a club but not to a divisional team. A few clubs matched the 4 to 5 wins in 18 to 19 games but nobody tied or went worse than the Dbacks in 2004 with divisional rivals.

I really wish the Yanks would just sack up and trade for Dunn. Do you realize what kind of monster they'd be unleashing on that right field fence at Yankee Stadium?
I really just want good things to happen for Adam Dunn. He's never hit in a good lineup in his entire career or played a meaningful game. Come on New York. Be cool.
I've been crossing my fingers for the Red Sox to make a move for Adam Dunn, but that probably won't happen until the offseason.

I think the White Sox are a top contender for him, and he'd probably be a great fit there for them.
They have Konerko, but they could slide Dunn to DH and have massive power in the middle of that lineup.

Yeah I hadn't seen Strasburg pitch yet so my friend and I decided to go "on a whim." We had no tickets and there were actually more people trying to buy then sell, but this one scalper tried to sell me two $10 standing room seats for $40 a piece. I was like fuck that and offered him $40 for both of them. Ended up paying $50. We got in right as they were announcing the lineup and the guy was like "And here's today's starting pitcher, Miguel Batista" and everyone was just like huh and I immediately started yelling to everybody that it's all a scheme and the Nationals are a fraud of an organization

Yeah. I was in Atlanta as well. Huge crowd. Made it feel like a playoff atmosphere which we haven't had at Turner Field in a few years. He is starting to turn into the traveling circus that the Yankees have become. Wherever he goes, whenever he plays, that ballpark will be packed with fans that usually wouldn't come out that night (including Washington). Props to yall guys for making it out there. He had a 1 hitter going til the 7th when he gave up another hit and they pulled him because it was still a 1-0 game at the time.
At this point with 61 games left, the Os are 31-70. I could easily see them not winning 10 more games to avoid the 40 win mark for futility. They're just that bad right now and I dont see any signs of them getting better if they trade guys like Wigginton and Scott away before the deadline since thats the majority of their offense gone and they barely manage to average 3 runs a game.

But, if they get Oswalt they'll probably win it. They are already on their way without him there. His W-L record sucks but that's mostly the Astros' fault.
It's not out of the realm of possibility that all 8 playoff teams from last year wind up there again this year. God that'd be boring.</font>

In Hessman's last game with the Toledo Mud Hens last year, he played an inning at every position in one game. Started at catcher, then moved around the diamond at each spot, then in the outfield. Then he went onto the mound to close the game out, blew the save, and took the loss.</font>

Jays deal Brett Wallace to the Astros for Anthony Gose.
Was kinda shocked to see this at first. Thinking about it though, I imagine the Jays are gonna move Lind to first once Overbay leaves, and have an outfield of Snider, Wells and Bautista with Lewis off the bench. Wallace has a lot of pop but is slow as fuck and terrible defensivley. Gose has a ton of speed which we lack outside of Mastronianni on the farm and is awesome with the glove. I can see what AA was doing there. Definitley a ballsy move that JP would never have done.

The Rangers still owe a couple of former/current Orioles players some money.
• Mickey Tettleton, $1.4 million (right): Using that memorable narcoleptic stance (http://us.lrd.yahoo.com/_ylt=AjSuWn8bIaYm5Q6yriurd5arO4d4/SIG=11mefsk55/**http%3A//www.battingstanceguy.com/2008/05/10/tigers), Tettleton hit 59 homers for the Rangers over two-plus seasons from 1995-97. Thirteen years later, the bill for his services rendered still hasn't come off the books.
• Mark McLemore, $970,051.97 (and not a penny less!): The old utility man has been retired since 2004 and hasn't put on a Ranger uniform since playing for the franchise's division winner in 1999. But he's still due a nice sum that's just a bit bigger than the Social Security check he won't be seeing for awhile.
• Kevin Millwood, $12.9 million: The pitcher was traded to the Baltimore Orioles (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/teams/bal/;_ylt=Akm07ZXa12UOk10XV3hCEzirO4d4) in the offseason. But let's presume he left behind a forwarding address just in case anyone found an extra $13 million lying around.

Hey I got a question...
...I remember that back in the day, in the 90's-early 2000's, nobody in the Home Run Derby hit alot of home runs in a single round...I think the record for a while was 13 by McGwire in '99...the Home Run Derby winner would win with just 8-10 homers in each round...but nowadays, we have guys hitting 10, 15, 20 homers in a single round...and to ME, that's weird, because the 90's is a big part of what is called "The Steroid Era", and the guys everyone associates with steroids (McGwire, Sosa, Canseco, Bonds) were active...yet none of them hit as many home runs in the HR Derby as some guys do today, when supposedly the Steroid issue is being taken care of...
...why do u think this is?
Emperor Smeat
07-30-2010, 04:51 AM
They changed the rules a few years ago that switched from only taking top 2-4 hitters per individual round to accumulated HRs over the entire contest. It ended up changing how batters played the derby since now if you have a dominating 1st round, you would need less in the 2nd round regardless if 2 other players hit more in the 2nd round than you.
In 1999 those derby hitters were not just hitting home runs but demolishing distances and the Green Monster since it was assumed leading to the contest the Green Monster might cut down on the total number of home runs. Once one guy managed to get it over the Monster it became a game of who could launch it over the farthest and into the next street.
Aguakate
07-30-2010, 04:54 AM
Yeah, but in '08 Josh Hamilton had 28 in ONE ROUND at Yankee Stadium...
...it's just weird to me that in ONE ROUND we have guys now hitting so many HR's, when in the 90's, the most one guy hit was 13 in one round, and it was McGwire at Fenway (a right handed hitter vs the Green Monster...short distance). It's just weird that during the steroid era no one was hitting 15, 20, 28 HR's, yet now they ARE, when the steroid issue is being taken care of, and when we have seen 5 no hitters this season.

I've seen Girardi do it a couple times since he's been here. But he micromanages to the extreme sometimes so its not really that surprising. Been far too many games I've seen where the Yankees will be up by 10 runs and Girardi will still be playing detailed matchups and using lefties for one batter and stuff like that.

This is because back then the players were juiced, but not the baseballs. I think they started making the baseballs a bit smaller and tailored for pop to appeal to the fans.
That's pretty obvious considering McGwire held the record with 13 homers in a home run friendly Fenway park, and then guys with far less prolific power started hitting 25 regularly.
It was at it's worse in the early 2000s. That's probably because the balls and players were both juiced.
Now it's mainly just the baseballs.

Occasionally I suppose, but not often at all. It's pretty rare that you'd want all your outfielders in the lineup over the designated hitter. I don't think I've seen it happen any time recently elsewhere.
The Yankees are probably one of the only teams you would see that happen with currently, because of what their outfield and DH situation is. Their outfield is pretty strong, and they don't really have a lot riding on the DH spot like lots of teams do in the AL.

Has he ever done it when the score was close? I would love to see what would happen if he did it and the Yanks blew the lead and the game went into extras. People would flip.
It's probably because the majority of the Yankees offensive threats are in the infield, and taking the DH out of the equation for a defensive replacement wouldn't take a huge component out of the lineup.
Texiera and A Rod are still in there. With other teams you'd probably be taking a middle of the lineup guy out, so you'd get second guessed way more.

Maybe I'm a little fickle, but the 2 deals the D'Backs have done so far I would say have netted them fair value. Daniel Hudson plus other pieces was what I was expecting for Haren. and they got that plus Joe Saunders and cleared Edwin Jackson off the books.
I've always liked Jackson, but he was way too inconsistent for me this year. I think the Sux will use him to get the Donkey.

Yeah, I remember a couple times where Mariano was in the lineup because of moves like that. Usually never came down to him getting up to bat, and if it did he's pinch hit for him.

Sort of surprised Yankees were able to get him for almost nothing for this season since Astros are paying $4 million out of the $7 million deal and don't get anyone of "quality" to replace his bat (even if he's having a down year). ESPN is reporting Astros might even be paying for part of his option salary next year as well but not confirmed.

So the deal is Mark Melancon and Jimmy Parades for Berkman. Parades wasn't in their top 30 prospects and Melancon was around #15. I think Melancon's gonna be a solid bullpen arm, but for some reason he's struggled this year. Also 25 years old, so not a huge loss. Yankees kind of killed his confidence the past couple years in the way they handled him. Never really got much of a shot in the bigs so a change of scenery should do him good.
Still, pretty absurd that the Astros traded their two best players and really haven't gotten anything significant in return. I guess they turned one of those players around and got Wallace but that seems like it. Not to mention the fact they're paying more than half of Berkman's salary and some of Oswalt's.
Seems like the Astros just waited too long to trade these guys and rebuild. It should have happened two years ago.

I know Vic Martinez is on the DL. But what about Varitek?
Varitek still on the DL list but this trade was more about overall depth for catchers since Varitek wasn't the everyday catcher for the Red Sox this year.
This trade allowed Red Sox to send 1-2 catchers back to Pawtucket who is struggling with a depleted roster. At one point in the season, Pawtucket was missing 11 players and played games with barely anyone available on the bench.
A few players injured at a time is normal for a season but not 11 which wrecked Pawtucket. They use Portland and the other minor league teams for specific development and not overall team play which is why no call ups went to Pawtucket.

So, as some of you may have heard, the Rangers are bankrupt. The auction for the team is going on today and only 2 groups are going back and forth. One is the group led by pitching god Nolan Ryan, MLB's "preferred buyer" and current Rangers president. The other is Mark Cuban's group, bad boy owner of the Dallas Mavericks.
As of right now, Cuban leads the bidding. And it'll probably go back and forth through the night.
Now think hypothetical. IF Cuban or Ryan wins the bidding. You think MLB will approve the sale? Will the Rangers be the team to beat come next year? Will Mark Cuban take MLB ownership to the next level?
Just curious. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand, GO!

I think if Cuban wanted, he could outspend the Yankees and Red Sox combined, but the problem is the fanbase isn't the same. If there wasn't a salary cap in the NBA Im sure he'd have the Mavericks spending a lot as well.
But it wouldn't be hard for Cuban, who already owns HDNET, to set up some sort of Mavericks/Rangers Sports Network similar to YES which would help expand the fanbase.

YES Network alone is $3 billion or based on the buying price when it was rumored for sale a few years ago.
Based on the team wealth list for 2010, Yankees are worth $1.6 billion and the stadium barely contributes to the value since the state "owns" it (in terms of 30-year payback deal to get money for the new stadium).
To put that all in perspective, Red Sox are #2 in the team wealth list but almost 50% less in value than Yankees while Fenway Park is worth some money but won't reach a top wealth level until it celebrates its 100th anniversary. NESN barely reaches $500 million in terms of wealth.

I had a dream about Nolan Ryan last night. I fell asleep watching Sports Center where the featured story was him buying the Texas Rangers..
So the dream...
He was driving his car in front of me and blew a tire. I pulled over and changed his tire for him and told him that I loved watching him play the game. He invited me back to his house and we played pool in his basement. End dream.

HORRIBLE call in that Phillies/Marlins game. And the umpire has the audacity after the game to reaffirm that it WAS a foul ball. He cost the Marlins the game and is so hard-headed that he won't accept he made a mistake.

I look at the National League, and it looks so weak in comparison to the American League...
...I'll go as far as to say that whoever wins the NL Pennant will lose to whoever wins the AL.
You look at the Yankees and Rays, for example, and then look at the Braves or Reds or Padres, and it's not even close.

Injuries are destroying the Braves right now. That, and Glaus hasn't shown anything at all since after the All-Star Break. Its sad, because he still leads the team by far in RBIs. The Braves pitching continues to keep them in games.
Mike Minor will be pitching for the Braves on Monday. Don't know what Kawikami did to warrant being sent down to the minors for three weeks. Losing Medlen is huge. He would have been amazing in long-relief for the playoffs. That is, if the Braves even make it there.
Thank the gods for All-Star Omar Infante.

The Braves are giving you the lead, you might as well take it. They just lost to the Giants, allowing them to score two runs in the 9th and 11th without getting a hit.

Also it's nice to see that the Braves erected a statue of Chipper Jones at 3rd base. Nice to see that kind of dedication from an organzation.

Wonder who's going down then. My hope says Francouer and Castillo...though Francoeur and Cora would do just fine. At least Cora's vesting option for 2011 won't be an issue.
Not really sure why they'd bother calling Tejada back up if they are just going to stick him on the bench, though. Omar hasn't got the balls to cut bait with guys like Castillo and Perez (or at least, the Wilpons won't let him). But it's better than nothing.</font>

Boston sorta kinda plays the desperation card and sign Carlos Delgado to a minor league deal.
If Delgado is not on the big league roster by September 1st, he can opt out and become a free agent.
24 days to get from Pawtucket to Boston, I can see it happening. Kinda curious if he's been keeping himself in playing shape or if he's got some rust on him.

I stopped watching MLB on Fox ever since they started to push the scoreboard too far up on the screen. I don't have a flat screen or HD style TV so all I get to see is part of the pitch count and the outs number (TV is maybe 5-6 years old itself).
They are horrible when it comes to the playoffs similar to ESPN and NBA playoffs since its non-stop talking about a select few players and/or Yankees and hyping up matches they only care for.

 I can see a lot of opponent fans and players try to say "hi" to him as the new taunt or way to get him distracted during a game.
So basically Berkman still sucks at hitting since the trade and needed someone to be distracted to get a hit.
