I hope 2010 isn't some lame 1998 ripoff

ALDS - Yankees over Rangers
NLCS - Padres over Braves
WS - Yankees over Padres

Funny though, all the other teams that were in the 1998 playoffs (Astros/Cubs/Indians/Red Sox) suck, maybe save for the Red Sox though they suck in terms of a Red Sox team.

didn't Clemens run off to clear his name to the Senate? He invited himself so to speak because his name had been mentioned @ 25-plus times. He walked himself into this mess... unless I'm misremembering.

It didn't help him either that the Mitchell report was very heavy in detailing the steroid ring that was occurring around the New York-Toronto area while other main reports focused either in the San Francisco-California area or Florida-Georgia area. I think Bonds got outed in the San Fran Balco report but forgot who was the big name for the Florida area report.

Majority of the players in those reports were related to those areas or played for teams near the area since those were the major steroid rings compared to players who only played in smaller areas like a Minnesota or Pittsburgh for example.

Emperor Smeat

It applies, but why would you say no to that trade if you were Johnny Damon?

It's because he is still upset at the reaction of Red Sox fans when he decided to leave and go to their hated rivals. He actually didn't expect his jersey to be burned and people to start hating him. It didn't help him that he kept saying New York was the best place to be in while ignoring his time at Fenway unless it was a Red Sox-Yankees series.

Original issue was about extra year or two on a new Red Sox contract more than extra money but the problem was his numbers were declining and he was getting injury-prone. Once Yankees made an offer, he bolted for the extra money rather than extra years on the Yankees contract.

Haven't watched a full Mets game since the one I went to a couple weeks ago. It's weird, last year they were even worse than they are now and last year I actually had playoff expectations for them, yet I still watched pretty much every game in full despite every good player being injured.

Guess I'm just tired of another year of the same poor play and off-field drama. They're actually on track to finish right around .500, which I predicted going into the year...but it still sucks cause they were 10 games over .500 and right in the thick of the race until the ASB.

Doubt 2011 will be much different since they won't be able to unload any of their bad contracts and are hamstrung by the budget...but I know I'll still be excited on Opening Day when they get a clean slate again (and hopefully Wally Backman in the dugout).

Best thing for the Mets is getting rid of Omar. If George was alive and ran the Mets, Omar would've been gone a long time ago, then brought back, then fired again.

Evil Vito
08-24-2010, 10:55 AM
Yeah, losing Omar would be huge. I think the rumors were that Wilpons have said he's already safe for next year, which is absolutely insane if true. Every year Omar seems to have a one-tracked mind, he'll fix the biggest hole on the team but then ignore everything else.

It's been said that the Wilpons are now in no financial position to pay people to work for another team, but the thought of Omar being around for another 2-3 years (whenever his deal is up) makes me want to vomit. I'll give him credit for taking the team to within a game of the World Series, but it's been completely downhill from there.

I remember after Beltran struck out looking I thought "well that sucks, but it's okay cause they'll be back next year!" fucking Mets.

Given everything that's happened in the 4 seasons after that, that game HAS to be the worst loss in Mets history. What's happened in these 4 seasons would have been awful no matter what, but it would have felt nowhere near this bad if they at least got a WS title out of this core.

Innovator
08-24-2010, 11:22 AM
The best thing for the Mets would be to break the core up. I know Mets fans are annoyed cause Francesa is calling for this for the last two years, but they aren't getting it done.

Evil Vito
08-24-2010, 11:43 AM
The problem is, what exactly in the core can they give up? Unless they got a ton of really good prospects in return, losing Wright and Reyes doesn't make them better. Santana is hardly to blame for the Mets' struggles, and nobody would take his contract on anyway. Nobody will take on Beltran's $18M+ for next year (and it's a contract year so he could be primed for a big year if he could stay healthy). Nobody will take Bay or K-Rod, either.

Thing is, I'm not sure the Mets' farm will produce enough winning ballplayers to put together a playoff run while Wright and Reyes are still in their prime. Santana's still good but I do fear that one of these years he's gonna get aging pitcher syndrome, his great years have been wasted here.

Evil Vito
08-24-2010, 11:49 AM
I mean shit, I remember in the offseason a Boston reporter had speculated that the Red Sox would be willing to part with Ellbury, Buccholz, Lowrie, and somebody else for Reyes. I doubt there was really any substance to those reports...but if I were Omar and I got offered that trade last offseason I would have done it in a heartbeat. I'd need a package like that to justify losing Reyes or Wright.

Innovator
08-24-2010, 01:13 PM
This past offseason? I doubt the RS would give up Ellsbury and Buccholz for a guy coming off injury.

Snowden
08-24-2010, 01:31 PM
With Ike Davis up, the Mets really only have Fernando Martinez and Mejia in the minors...and I can't say I'm too sold on Martinez (though he's quite young yet).

Sad part is that the Mets have plenty of talent on the team, and its going to be hard to "upgrade" a lot of position players. Beltran and Bay are entrenched, and the way Pagan is playing you want him in the lineup. Wright and Reyes are there to stay, Castillo's contract is too big for you to sign another second basemen (why the Mets gave him a long term deal is beyond me), and Davis is the first basemen of the future. Mets need a new catcher, yes, but they don't pop up on the free agent market very often.

Triple Naitch
08-24-2010, 01:36 PM
Martinez has been given so many opportunities with the Mets, I think they've finally run out of patience. It sucks because they know he can be a good player but he needs a change of scenery. Just like Felix Pie.

Snowden
08-24-2010, 01:45 PM
Worst part is that he's batting all of .250 in the minors this year...doesn't exactly spell big league success.

Evil Vito
08-24-2010, 02:17 PM
I think the front office is just as much to blame for F-Mart's shortcomings tbh. He earned almost all of his hype in 2005 when he slugged over .500 in the SAL at age 16, which is ridiculous. Then he got bumped to High-A, still at 16, and struggled to end the year.

The logical thing to do would have been to have him open up 2006 in High-A again (now 17, still really really young for that league) and instead they opened him up in Double-A. He hasn't been quite the same since. He's fallen on the Top 100 prsopects list every year since then. He was #77 this year. I'd be shocked if he somehow made it again next year.

The guy only turns 22 after the season and yet I feel about ready to give up on the guy as a prospect.

Emperor Smeat
08-24-2010, 07:13 PM
It did occur during the most heated time of the rivalry (2003-2007) although it didn't help that during his time with the Yankees, Damon would "trash" the Red Sox fans with how in love he was with New York after a few years earlier saying he would never leave or want to play for the Yankees.

Historically, usually the talent migration benefited Yankees more than Red Sox (ex. Boggs wins a title with Yankees, David Cone average with Red Sox after being pivotal piece in Yankees title years, Hinske sucked with Red Sox yet suddenly becomes a good player with Yankees). Jon Olerud is the only recent player to have been good while being on both teams.

It is actually pretty common thing to occur once every few years since most recent would be Lebron having his jersey burned in Cleveland.

Teary reunion for Logan Morrison, dad

Associated Press

NEW YORK -- Logan Morrison (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=30536)'s father remembers exactly what he said when the doctor told him he had inoperable lung cancer. "Am I going to be around long enough to see my son get his first big league hit?" Oh, he's seen that and much, much more. “ Anytime he's in the stands I kick it up a little bit. He's the reason I'm here. And with him being sick, there might not be too many more opportunities where he can see me play.
” -- Logan Morrison Morrison and his dad, both choking back tears, sat side by side in the Florida Marlins (http://espn.go.com/mlb/team/_/name/fla/florida-marlins)' dugout Wednesday trying to describe their emotions during a cherished reunion at Citi Field. Words, in this case, could never be enough. Not for a proud father who traveled 29 hours on a train to see his son play big league ballgames in person for the first time. Not for a boy who knows all too well it could be their last chance to celebrate his birthday together. Tom Morrison, 51, was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer in April and spent much of the summer fighting for his life in a hospital. Meanwhile, his son, Logan, earned a call-up to the majors July 27 and a spot in left field with the Marlins. "That was killing me, not being able to see him play," the elder Morrison said. "It's just nice to be able to sit in the park and watch him." Tom Morrison, finally well enough to travel, got the chance to do just that Tuesday night following the long train ride from his Louisiana home. He saw his son go 1 for 5 and score a run in a 6-5 loss to the New York Mets (http://espn.go.com/mlb/team/_/name/nym/new-york-mets). "It was an awesome feeling, for him to see that in person," Logan Morrison said. Logan Morrison was in the lineup again Wednesday on his 23rd birthday. His dad was back at the ballpark, too, purple-tinted sunglasses sitting upside down on the bill of a black Marlins cap, with about 20 other family members and friends in attendance. A birthday cake awaited after the game. "Baseball has kind of brought the family together," Logan Morrison said. Doctors' orders prevent Tom Morrison from flying, but that didn't stop him from making it to the Big Apple this week. And after all of the radiation and chemotherapy he's been through, sitting in the left-field stands watching his boy play was quite a treat. "It's probably the best recreation I have," Tom Morrison said, smiling. "I made him wave at me."

The rookie outfielder, selected to the Futures Game for top prospects during All-Star festivities last month, singled twice, tripled and scored two runs in a 5-4 victory Wednesday night. He's hitting .307 with no homers and seven RBIs, and nobody is happier for him than his father. "Anytime he's in the stands I kick it up a little bit. He's the reason I'm here," Morrison said. "And with him being sick, there might not be too many more opportunities where he can see me play." After the game, the Morrison clan met up in a corridor before heading out for a postgame dinner. "It's kind of surreal. The kid's living his dream," Tom Morrison said before the game. "He's a good kid. He deserves it." Logan Morrison said it's not hard to concentrate on the field, but he often thinks of his dad during batting practice and when he's away from the ballpark. He said his all-out style of play and perfectionist personality comes directly from his father, still active as a chief petty officer in the Coast Guard and based out of Slidell, La. "Now you know why when I get three hits and I get out once I'm mad," Logan Morrison said. "I'm never satisfied." Tom Morrison, who said he played college football at Kansas, watches Logan's games on his computer at home and plans to go to Florida in early October for the Marlins' final series of the season. The weather should be cooler then, which is important for the elder Morrison because he gets dehydrated easily. Next year, he wants to buy a special all-in-one train ticket that would allow him to hop on and off in different cities -- wherever Logan is playing at the time. That's how Tom Morrison wants to spend the days he has left. Sitting in the dugout at Citi Field, he could only hope he gets that chance.

Oliver Perez must have broken it by now or gotten close to it. He hasn't pitched since August 1st. The Mets have been using a 6-man bullpen ever since, even in extra innings Ollie has never seen the field. He just sits on his ass in the bullpen.

Aside from the fact that he's terrible, it's pretty clear that the idea is to send a message to him that he should have accepted his Triple A assignment when he had the chance. I think the only reason he hasn't been released yet is that the Mets are hoping they can get SOMETHING for him in the offseason. If a team is willing to pay $1 million of the $12 million he's owed or send their Single A backup catcher, the Mets would do it to get anything they can.

But when push comes to shove, I see no way that he is on the first base line on Mets Opening Day next year. The Mets will probably just eat his salary and whoever picks him up (surely somebody will still take a flyer on him) will pay league minimum. It's a sunk cost, anyway.

And once rosters expand in September - I doubt we'll see him at all. If I were Jerry, I would have spot started him at some point and let him throw 150 pitches - and watch him embarass himself.

I question that last part. I'd like to think the Mets would cut him but if they were, why not do it by now? In fact, rumor at the deadline was Zambrano for Ollie just so the Cubs could get out from under the contract - seeing that they didn't take it, that tells me they're very concerned about money and thus aren't inclined to pay a guy to sit around.

That said, he's gotta go - it sends the wrong message that being terrible and outright unwilling to improve yourself i acceptable. The only joy I take from this is that this is probably his last major league contract. I can't see anyone giving him a guarantee major league contract given his performance and unwillingness to do the right thing. And if he's unwilling to go to the minors, he probably wouldn't take a minor league deal with an invite to Spring Training. A reasonable fate for someone who didn't care enough to help the team or himself.

The batting average is going to be the hardest for him to over take since he's 7 points behind.

Right now of the top 3 in the NL race, he has the most at-bats which makes every at-bat worth less than a Votto or Gonzalez at-bat. If anyone ties or gets a lead in HRs and RBIs, he will change his swing like most batters do when chasing the Triple Crown.

Always find it pretty dumb when the batter charges the mound. The pitcher is surrounded by his own guys, so you are at a serious disadvantage here.

Lester improves to 13-0 vs the Os despite giving up 5 runs in the first two innings because the Os bullpen sucked and gave up 6 in the 7th.

Nyjer Morgan is insane.

I know. And i love it. Please trade him to the Cubs. Lets put this guy together with Zambrano. At the least, it would be highly entertaining while we lose.

Honestly, he took out a catcher, big deal. Then they get pisses cause he stole some bases ? Is it his fault that the manager didnt call the dogs off? If i'm Nyger Morgan and you're sad sack of shit catcher isnt throwing me out and my manager doesnt mind, i'm stealing fucking home if i have a chance. I love the aggressiveness.

Now of course the guy is gunna get bagged on by experts because he's been in a shit load of altercations the past month, but still. I love this dude. I love him coming out of the pile and throwing his hands in the air. ROFL.

The best thing about baseball is that even losing teams become really entertaining because of stuff like this.

Yah. It was only the 6th inning. They were down 10. It's not like he's doing this in the 9th. And the most fucked up part is that no one from ESPN seems to want to mention this. Its all like " OMG Nyjer Morgan so turrrrrrrrrrrible ! "

Yeah Nyjer Morgan seems to be a some steps below Ron Artest, and he's still young. I think you want to stay away from that, RP.

...The Yankees are playing so well without AROD.

U can look at it 2 ways: either the Yankees are so good that even without a 600 Home Run hitter, they can win...

...or...

...AROD isn't too important to the Yankees.

I'm talking about the fact that the Yankees are winning NOW, IN SEPTEMBER 2010, without AROD.

You want A-Rod playing if you are the Yankees.

I think it is just a coincidence that they are playing better now. They are playing better now not because A-rod is gone but because playoffs are in one month and if you're the Yankees you don't want to be team not going to the playoffs.

A-rod or no A-rod I think they'd be playing the same way. A-rod is very important to the Yankees. When it's September you need to play better if you have a very strong chance of making the playoffs and the Yankees do.

On the other hand I always thought the Yankees could play without him. It doesn't mean I don't want A-rod back we need all our players back for the playoffs.
