Well, congats Texas, definitely the better team.

Lee said he would 100% re-sign with the Rangers if they won the WS. Even if they don't I honestly think it'd be hard for him to leave after this. Rangers won't offer him quite as much as the Yanks, but he should still see close to a 9-figure salary to stick around on a contender.

I also think he may have too much fun beating on the Yanks to make a heel turn and join them. I've thought that in the past with guys like Damon and such but this just feels a bit different.

Kinda sucks that rooting against the #1 bandwagon team in all of sports meant that you had to side with Cowboys fans, which wasn't that bad until they played that retarded Texas song after the game ended. And I don't see how Lee signing with the Yankees would be worse than Damon, that guy played for their hated rival and was involved in the greatest comeback of all time against them and then went in front of the whole world and lied by saying "I can't see myself ever playing for the Yankees" when that is exactly what he did. Cliff Lee for the last few years has just been the guy that any team will pay a ton of money for just to have him dominate the second half of the season, I don't see why he wouldn't take all the money the Yankees are gonna throw at him.

Kinda like that stupid New York song the Yankees play?

You mean "New York New York" by the Chairman of the fucking board Frank Sinatra?

Congrats your team won, but you just called Frank Sinatra stupid? Really? Come on!

Fuck the Yankees, woooooo! The true kings of the AL East in the 21st century remain the Red Sox with two world series rings to 1 for the Yankees!

Offseason is sure gonna be fun.

The one bad thing about when the Yankees lose is you know that they are gonna re-load this offseason. Carl Crawford, Jayson Werth, and Clifton Phiefer may all be wearing pinstripes next year.

ClockShot
10-23-2010, 10:00 AM
Cliff Lee is obviously our primary target this offseason, along with about 5-6 other things that must be addressed on our to do list.

I see no reason to bring aboard Crawford or Werth.

Triple Naitch
10-23-2010, 10:22 AM
Just simple upgrades. The Yankees didn't necessarily need Mark Teixeira two years ago but saw the chance to upgrade and took it. Imagine Crawford in left, Werth in right, and Swisher DH? Pretty big upgrade over Gardner, Swisher, and Thames.

I can't see the Yankees being players for Werth, other than maybe to bring the price up for the Sox or Angels. Everyone says Crawford to the Yankees and the evidence points to them getting Crawford (they didn't go after Holiday or Bay last year) but I would never give Crawford 7 @ 100+. Once his legs go, he won't have anything. His OBP isn't great, I don't believe in the power and he's not a super high average hitter.

Evil Vito
10-23-2010, 11:07 AM
I can't really see the Yankees getting a big bat. Thames had a good year so I'd have to think he'll be back in some capacity. There's also a mutual option with Berkman but I don't think they'd want to spend $15 million on him. Plus Posada will be back and you have to think there's at least a chance he'll be the DH if Montero proves himself to be ready for the bigs.

The other spots are already locked down for next year except for SS technically, but we know Jeter will be back.

I can see them grabbing an extra bullpen arm and of course making a run at Cliff Lee. If they don't Lee I could see them getting Lilly or somebody.

What I suspect the Yankees will do:

Vazquez - gone obviously
Pettite - would return I suspect
Rivera - Will return on the "Yankee lifetime reward contract"
Jeter - Same as Rivera but this one could turn out ugly - he did nothing after the break
Burnett - Will be back - too much money and they'd probably have to pay $40 or so of the $50 million left on his deal to move him
Wood - Will be back in some capacity, dunno if they're going to pick up an 11 million dollar option for a setup man

I think they'll give Nova a chance to win a rotation spot next year. I think they will sign Crawford. They would look like:

Jeter
Crawford
Teixeria
Rodriguez
Cano
Posada DH
Swisher
Montero
Granderson

Sabathia
Hughes
Pettite
Burnett
Nova

Also, I wouldn't be shocked if Joba isn't here at the start of the 2011 season - be it in the minors or elsewhere

You know, I don't think the offseason is going to be as full of surprise and storylines as most people think. I actually think it'll go down pretty calmly.

Yankees will sign Jeter, there's no doubt, and will also sign Rivera. They have to let Vazquez go, they have to evaluate Burnett and see if he's worth keeping or if they should try to trade him. I don't see any chance of Lee going to the Yankees. I think he enjoys beating them too much, plus, he's found a home in Texas, they are doing pretty well, and what he really wants to do is win, so I think Nolan Ryan and Ron Washington will sit down with him and work something out. And if they win the World Series, that meeting will be even easier.

Offensively I don't see the Yanks doing much. I don't see them adding Crawford, and I don't see them adding Werth.

The Yankees really don't have that much to change. Part of that is just that a lot of the positions have guys locked in already. Basically, bring Jeter and Mariano back. Jeter will be signed for too long and too much money, thats pretty much inevitable. Earlier in the season Mo talked about how he wouldn't mind going year by year. But I'm guessing they'll give him a two year deal. And probably going hard for Lee. After thats its just smaller pieces like the bench, maybe bringing Thames back.

Seriously doubt they go after Crawford or Werth. They'll obviously be linked to them all offseason but I don't think they'll have serious interest in them.

I think he'll go to whoever offers the most. Haven't really heard of anyone passing up millions and millions of dollars because they enjoy beating up on a team. Sure, if Texas offers something in the same range as the Yankees he'd probably stay. If Texas doesn't offer the money, he's not staying. I dunno if its just the interviews I've seen with him or the fact that he's been on so many different teams over the past couple years, but I think he's absolutely just going to the highest bidder.

Just wanna state for the record that I like Brett Gardner in pinstripes. So, no thank you for Carl Crawford.

Also gotta remember the braintrust gotta make a decision on Girardi. He's done too. I'm willing to bet when he gets home he may have a message or two from clubs with manager vacancies. But I think Hal will keep him in one way or another.

Nova really? Would you care to elaborate on that? He is a good starter. But from what I see anyway he is a little better then Dustin Moseley. If the Yankees need a starter if Burnett or Pettitte go down next year he'd be a good fill in guy. If the Yankees need a sixth starter he'd be a good fill in guy. But is he really ready to be our fifth starter? Cause I just don't see it.

If we don't get Lee you should rest assure we are making a trade for a good starter maybe from the NL.

Here's how it will likely be.

CC

Lee (Insert traded for pitcher here)

Pettitte

Burnett

Hughes

I have not seen enough of Nova to say he'd be a good fifth starter. And by the way I don't think I even want Crawford. Now, Werth on the other hand I'm interested in getting him.

I have seen Joe Girardi for the last couple of months, especially in the postseason, and I don't know...I'm not saying he will leave and not come back (My guess is he will return), but I don't see him enjoying managing in New York. Now, don't get me wrong, it's not easy, and surely being Yankee manager must be stressful, but I just don't see him enjoying what he does. You see some managers, and even when they are in stress, you still see they are at least happy doing what they are doing. I don't get that feeling from Girardi. If he does come back (and I think he will), I don't see him sticking around for a long tenure. I just don't think he can emotionally and mentally handle it.

I think I might just take this with a grain of salt no offense. I mean all managers can't react to stress as easily as others. Being a Manager is a stressful job. Are you implying he'd be happier with another team or are you just saying he's just not cut out to be a manager? Cause I really don't know if a change of environment will really change the way he handles stress.

Evil Vito

I think Girardi is definitely coming back. Management seem to like him and I see no reason to leave if you have a perennial title contender.

He may have wanted to "go home" to the Cubs but that's already off the table. Shocked the Cubs didn't wait for Girardi to hit the market tbh.

When he was Marlins manager he didn't seem so stressed, so uptight. He was just doing his job and working with the young guys down there. He would smile, joke around with the young players, and he turned them from a losing team to an above .500 team. Now that he is in New York, he really seemed kind of...I don't know how to explain it. He seemed unhappy. Obviously managing in Florida isn't the same as New York, and the expectations were less. I read where he, last Tuesday, accepted that he had given thought to managing the Cubs, where there was an opening. So I just think that while he is a good manager, he's not cut out to manage in New York (emotionally and mentally).

That may be true and I would love for the Cubs to actually win a World Series I'm starting to feel bad for them. They have the team to make it to the playoffs at least.

This is me just hoping he doesn't go because right now there are no options other then Giardi as Yankees Manager.

I think that the Yankees have failed in terms of grooming Minor League Managers, or Major League Coaches, so they can one day manage at the Big League level, perhaps the same Yankees. Once Girardi is gone, it'll be interesting what happens.

Crazy how the World Series is set to be Giants vs Rangers.

Same thing with the Rangers, when they had Juan Gonzalez, Pudge Rodriguez, AROD, Palmeiro, etc. A lot of hitting, but no pitching and no small ball. It was said they couldn't win because of their ballpark, but they're playing in the same ballpark they did in the 90's and they are winning.

Nah, I don't hate teams BECAUSE they make the WS, it's just that I usually have a rooting interest. This year I can just chill and hopefully watch some great baseball.

2009: Obviously hate the Yankees, although this one would have sucked either way for me.
2008: Obviously hate the Phillies, plus the Rays would have been a great story.
2007: I don't HATE the Red Sox, but they had just won the WS a few years earlier and the Rox just felt like an amazing story so I was pulling hard for them. Sadly I knew the Rox would get squashed when they had to wait around for a week.
2006: I don't hate the Cardinals either, but I obviously had to root against them after knocking off the Mets in the NLCS.

So yeah, 2005 was the last time I watched a WS with no rooting interest, just a hope for a good series.

Supposedly Cliff Lee's wife was harassed while at Yankees Stadium and even though it was horrible, Cliff Lee says it won't harm potential deals in the future with the Yankees.

During the AL Championship Series games in New York between the Yankees and Rangers, fans were extremely rude to Kristen Lee, spitting and throwing beer in her direction and shouting obscenities, according to USA Today.

The ironic part is this whole incident occurred around the same time Lee's wife was talking to Sabathia's wife to find out the best places to live and go to while in New York since Lee and Sabathia are close friends off the field.

I think at some point during the game tonight we will hear something along the lines of

Cliff Lee reminds me of a pitcher I use to catch for. Steve Carlton "Lefty" of the Philadelphia Phillies. We called him Lefty, because he threw... Left handed. That's why Cliff Lee reminds me of Steve Carlton, because he throws Left handed.

I'd say me and Jayson Werth know an equal amount.

The Phillies did get some easy lobs, and they still couldn't hit them.

I hope these supposed Yankee fans really don't stop Cliff Lee from coming here. If we don't get Cliff Lee we could have a problem with AJ Burnett having a bad year and Hughes maybe coming off an excellent year. Hughes is a good pitcher but I can't see him doing as good as he did this year next year. Javy Vazquez being most likely gone and Andy 50/50. That's one reason why I am going for San Francisco if Texas doesn't win there will be more of a chance of Cliff going to where the money is at instead of signing for a discount back with Texas.

I think Cliff wants to come here. He wants to pitch on the same team as Sabathia. And Cliff and CC'S wife I have heard are very, good friends. So I think we have a chance but I am sticking by my guns and saying if by chance we don't sign Lee we will gather together a package and sending a good to modest package to a NL team for a good pitcher. We may have to do that even if we sign Lee. This off season will be fun I think.

It'll come down to money, like it does with almost every free agent. I'm sure millions of dollars will make up for a bad experience at Yankee Stadium. And he's been in Texas a couple months now, its not like he's been there his whole career or anything. I can't remember many free agents giving discounts to teams they were with for half a season.

Also, why do you think Hughes can't have a good season next year? Its obvious the workload this year was the reason for him trailing off in the second half. With a year of starting under his belt and not having to deal with innings limits next year I expect him to keep improving.

I never said he can't have a good year. Just not this good a year. Just hear me out this year he had 18 wins, That's insanely good. I hope that he keeps on improving of course, I just don't see him being a 20 game winner. Don't ask me why I just don't see it. Course he'll have a good year next year. Why? Because Hughes is a good pitcher.

I guess I read to many newspapers then . Almost every time I read a Cliff Lee article it keeps saying that Cliff is more likely to accept a discount from Texas if they win the World Series.

Wins are a terrible way to judge players years though. If wins actually related to how well he pitched this year he would have no where near 18 wins because he struggled a lot in the second half.

I'm sure winning the WS will definitely help in retaining Lee but I can't imagine he'll give a big discount either way. He has no long-term ties with Texas. He's only been there a couple months. I have no idea on what he thinks but most likely he'll do what every other free agent does and go to whichever team offers the most money. The one advantage Texas has over other teams is Texas is close to Lee's home.

Where do you think they'll be in 2011? In 4th place? They are real strong but unfortunately they are in the wrong league. Do you think they can finish above the Rays, Red Sox , or the Yankees?
