Bard needs to get good as soon as possible. Papelbon tends to have bad outings a few times a year like today (usually against the Twins).

Ever since Papelbon got hurt a few years ago, he refuses to pitch anything besides a fastball.

I don't think they'll continue to play like this. But, if things don't work out soon the Red Sox are gonna have to improve either their hitting or bullpen at the trade deadline, I wonder if they got what it takes to steal away Adrian Gonzalez from the Padres.

Right now they suck but they are gonna do something major if things keep going like this at the trade deadline

Supreme Olajuwon

Here we go. Marlins skipper Fredi Gonzalez benched Hanley Ramirez last night for not hustling after a ball that Ramirez accidentally kicked into the outfield. Hanley fouled a ball off his shin which probably played a part in his lack of effort, but he stayed in the game. Ramirez refuses to apologize to his teammates and had these two quotes for his manager:

"It's his team. He can do whatever he fucking wants."

"That's OK. He doesn't understand that. He never played in the big leagues."

Oh boy.

All of their pitching is locked up for the next few season & they have some other contracts coming off the books to offer to FAs next year. If they don't close the gap much by middle of June I don't see them making any moves at the deadline.

Dragon
05-18-2010, 02:02 PM
I think during the game yesterday they said the Sox are third in runs scored this year in the majors. It doesn't seem like its their offense. And it doesn't seem like they can do much with their pitching because of how many guys they have locked up. They just need the players they have to play better and guys to get healthy.

Jesus Shuttlesworth
05-18-2010, 02:23 PM
They are that high? Interesting

Maybe I am simply overreacting then. I didn't think the offense was doing too hot. I'm not worried about the pitching, that will right itself. Hopefully it does before they fall too far out of it. They do seem to "match" whatever the other team is doing a lot, like yesterday they scored 10+ when the Yanks score 10+ but then they lose games 2-1, 4-3, etc. I don't have any stats to back this up, just seems to be happening a lot.

Supreme Olajuwon

Evil Vito
05-18-2010, 03:47 PM
<font color=goldenrod>If for whatever reason the Sox don't climb back into it, I hope the Rays can at least stay this hot throughout the year. We all knew the Yankees were making the playoffs this year barring 2009 Mets-esque injuries, but I'd like to at least see a team challenge them in the division.</font>

Evil Vito

<font color=goldenrod>Mets have to clear a roster spot tomorrow for R.A. Dickey to make a spot start, sounds like Jenrry Mejia will be shipped off to the minors and begin to be stretched out as a starter. He's been good in the bullpen and I understand why they felt compelled to put him on the Opening Day roster after his great spring, but this is a good move. He's not going to be jerked around anymore, this is a permanent move from the sounds of things. Could see him back up in late June/early July as a starter if the rotation still is having major problems by then.</font>

The bullpen is a major issue. Also, even though the offense is producing I really think the lack of a huge offensive threat in the middle of the lineup hurts them.
It may only make a small difference on the surface, but when games are being lost in clutch situations and by small margins it hurts.
It has an impact on the pitching because it would take a lot of pressure off them.

Crapelbon sucks.

<font color=goldenrod>Jesus. Wright K's in the 9th with 1 out and the go-ahead run on 3rd. His third K on the night. 15 games in a row where he's K'ed. 55 K's this year already (37% of his ABs) and he's on pace for 225.

Then to top it all off, he threw the ball away to end the game. Another Santana start wasted.

Seriously worried about him. His stance has changed so radically and he's just swinging at way too many bad pitches, particularly the ones inside. I want to punch Matt Cain in the face.</font>

V-Mart wouldn't work as the permanent catcher since his defense and throwing runners out is near the bottom of the league for catchers. His offense is good though to help make up for some of his defensive and pitch selection issues.

Varitek still has huge value when catching for young pitchers (Buchholz) and Matsuzaka.

He would have actually had enough time to run to the infield and turn an unassisted triple play as a center fielder. Would have been epic.</font>

<font color=goldenrod>Oh joy, more drama in Met land. John Maine throws 5 pitches last night, never getting above 85 MPH when he usually hits 90. Jerry Manuel and Dan Warthen noticed something off about his motion, so they pulled him from the game. Fortunately, reliever Raul Valdes got the Mets through 5 innings.

Maine is all pissed off, saying he was fine and blasting Manuel for showing a lack of confidence (not that Maine has done anything to warrant confidence) that he could get people out.

But yeah, just more example of Jerry Watch being in full effect. I think if the Yanks sweep the Mets, Jerry should be let go on Monday...but he'll probably get to stay through at least the Phillies series.</font></font>

The Texas Rangers filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Monday in hopes of spurring completion of the stalled $575 million sale of the team—and maybe clear the decks for the new owners to make pennant-chasing decisions this summer.

The bankruptcy filing comes four months after Tom Hicks announced an agreement to sell the team to a group led by Hall of Fame pitcher and team president Nolan Ryan and Pittsburgh attorney Chuck Greenberg.

“I did not want to put the baseball future of the Texas Rangers in jeopardy or uncertainty for an extended period of time,” Hicks said. “This action is all about creating an end to the impasse in allowing this team sale to go forward.”

Under the plan to be presented at a court hearing Tuesday, the Rangers would pay the $75 million of the club’s debt tied up in Hicks’ financially strapped ownership group. That would remove the team from the additional claims by creditors against Hicks Sports Group that have held up the sale.

“We feel like this is the correct thing to do,” Ryan said. “We have some deadlines coming up that are obviously important to us as a ballclub, and feel like by bringing this to finality that we will then be able to do the things we feel like we need to do and push forward with the winning ways of the ballclub.”

In order for the AL West-leading Rangers to have financial flexibility at the non-waiver trading deadline July 31, the sale of the team will need to be completed. There is also the amateur draft next month.

A 21-page filing in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Fort Worth included the top 30 unsecured creditors, a list headed by Alex Rodriguez(notes), who is owed $24.9 million in deferred compensation six years after he was traded. The next five are also current or former players: Kevin Millwood(notes) ($12.9 million), Michael Young(notes) ($3.9 million), Vicente Padilla(notes) ($1.7 million), Mickey Tettleton ($1.4 million) and Mark McLemore(notes) ($970,000).

Even if the court approves the Rangers’ bankruptcy petition, the sale would take several more weeks to complete.

“I know it will be faster than the other alternative would have been,” said Hicks, who bought the team in 1998 from a group that included former president George W. Bush.

Since the filing was made by the team, not Hicks Sports Group, the group of about 40 creditors owed money by HSG could object to the sale. Greenberg knows that’s a distinct possibility.

“Given the way a couple of these renegade creditors have behaved, I’m not expecting an overnight personality transplant,” Greenberg said. “So, the odds are they won’t take this well.”

Greenberg said he doesn’t believe the court will disregard the process so far, “particularly since every creditor of the Texas Rangers will be paid 100 cents on the dollar.”

Young, the longest-tenured Ranger in his 10th season, is the only current Texas player listed in top 30 unsecured creditors. Others creditors listed in the filing include Tickets.com, Rawlings Sporting Goods Co., Clear Channel Outdoor and Stats Inc.

Hicks, Greenberg and Ryan met with the players before their flight Monday night to Kansas City, assuring them that they would continue to be paid on time.

“After a huge sigh of relief, the meeting went on,” Young said. “Once we knew (bankruptcy) was a way to expedite the sale, we knew it wasn’t that big of a deal.”

New baseball players’ union head Michael Weiner said he has “been assured that all contractual commitments to players will be honored in full.”

After an agreement in principle was announced Jan. 23, after more than a month of exclusive negotiations, Greenberg’s group had hoped to have control of the Rangers by opening day. But the deal was slowed by concerns from Hicks’ lenders after Hicks Sports Group defaulted on $525 million in loans last year.

Hicks said it became apparent about a month ago that the Chapter 11 bankruptcy would be the only way to break the stalemate.

The filing is not the first in baseball.

The Chicago Cubs briefly filed for Chapter 11 protection last year in a step that allowed their new owners to avoid potential claims from Tribune Co. creditors. The Baltimore Orioles were sold in a bankruptcy auction in 1993 after owner Eli Jacobs filed for Chapter 11.

Once the bankruptcy issue is settled and the sale proceeds, at least 75 percent of baseball’s owners have to approve the transfer of ownership from Hicks. In a letter included with the bankruptcy filing, commissioner Bud Selig said he intends to recommend the approval of the sale.

Major League Baseball has agreed to give the Rangers a new credit facility while it waits for the deal to be completed, the team said.

This is the 50th season of the franchise that began as the Washington Senators in 1961, and moved to Texas in 1972. The Rangers won their only three AL West titles in a four-year span at the end of the 1990s, and have never won a playoff series.

Court records show that the team’s cash flow problems began in 2005. Hicks provided more than $100 million to the Rangers in his tenure, but problems have mounted over the years.

“Due to the unprecedented downturn in the U.S. economic and housing industry and global economic recession, other commitments and contractual restraints, Mr. Hicks was no longer willing to provide the same material financial support he had in the past,” Kellie Fischer, the Rangers’ chief financial officer, wrote in a separate filing Monday.

Rodney Fort, a professor at the University of Michigan and vice president of the International Association of Sports Economists, dismissed the notion that escalating player salaries played a role in forcing the bankruptcy filing.

“That’s the silliest of all economic logic—to blame your employees because you can’t manage the asset in such a way that you can make a go of it,” he said. “It’s unlikely that even if it were true that high salaries were causing problems for the Rangers, that the answer is declare bankruptcy and sell the team.”

AP Sports Writers Ronald Blum in New York and Noah Trister in Little Rock, Ark., and AP writer Paul J. Weber in San Antonio contributed to this report.

I believe a huge reason is the starting pitching is eating up more innings than at the start of the season so no need to worry about the bullpen messing up if they are now pitching less than before.

Okajima pitching well last night was huge since he's been shaky since start of last season and needed that strong performance.

OAKLAND—Twenty-six year old Oakland Athletics pitcher Angry A-Rod Man threw the 19th perfect game in Major League history Sunday, striking out six and retiring 27 out of 27 Tampa Bay Rays batters. The Angry A-Rod Man, known primarily for being angry at A-Rod (above), accomplished the feat in only 109 pitches, 77 of which were strikes. "I had good stuff today," said the Angry A-Rod Man, who joined his grandmother Angry A-Rod Grandmother after the game so they could be angry at A-Rod together. "It's just cool to know that everyone thinks of me as the man who threw a perfect game." When asked for comment, A-Rod wished the Angry A-Rod Man well.

If Strasburg gets called up this week he'll make his debut against the Reds. Depending on when he gets the start he could end up facing Mike Leake who was drafted 7 spots after Strasburg or the spot that's open from Homer Bailey's injury. That spot was filled by a spot starter last time but the Reds could decide to call up Aroldis Chapman. Either scenario would be pretty juicy.

<font color=goldenrod>Here's a little boredom game to pass the time: Let's say you are forced to execute one trade (no matter how lopsided) with each of your division rivals. The only catch is: the trade must be based on position as determined by the official team depth chart (ie: no trading your #4 starter for another team's ace, no swapping a random middle reliever for a closer, etc.). What moves would you makes?

For the Mets:

-Phillies: Chase Utley for Luis Castillo
Absolute no brainer here. Getting rid of Castillo's contract and getting an upgrade that is approximately 1,000 times better. Not much else to say.

-Braves: Jason Heyward for Jeff Francoeur
In fairness to Francoeur, he is ridiculous when on a hot streak. But that's just another reason to get rid of him, those streaks are so frustrating. Getting Heyward is the much better move both for now and for the future, plus it would be funny to send Francoeur back to Atlanta.

Nationals: Willie Harris for Gary Matthews Jr.
GMJ might be finding himself getting DFA'ed soon anyway, so may as well send him out for another reserve outfielder. It would be great to not have to have Willie Harris make a game-winning grab every single time against the Mets.

Marlins: Jorge Sosa (or whoever is the Marlins' long reliever) for Oliver Perez
I think Sosa is the long reliever for the Marlins, the depth chart doesn't make it clear. He sucked with the Mets before, but I don't care - this move is just to get the $24 million dollar longman Perez out and let somebody else deal with him.</font>

MVP
05-31-2010, 01:07 PM
For the Red Sox:

Yankees: Phil Hughes for Tim Wakefield
They're both the #5 starters according to Yahoo. The pair of Hughes and Buchholz in the rotations in the coming years would be incredible.

Rays: Evan Longoria for Adrian Beltre
Beltre is hitting great right now, but he'll retract back to his mean numbers pretty soon. Evan Longoria is poised to be one of the best hitters in MLB for a long time.

Blue Jays: Alex Gonzalez for Marco Scutaro
Really the only feasible trade I can think of. Getting better defense out of Gonzalez and a little more pop, but Scutaro has been pretty valuable to the Sox as well.

Orioles: Nick Markakis for J.D. Drew
I was really tempted to go for Matt Wieters instead, but I'd rather ditch Nancy Drew and keep Victor Martinez.

Supreme Olajuwon
05-31-2010, 01:40 PM
Reds:

St Louis: Chris Carpenter for Aaron Harang.
Harang is the ace in name only now but he was still the Opening Day starter. I might be tempted to do Yadier Molina for Ramon Hernandez. Or Wainwright for Cueto. And I would do all these before Pujols for Votto.

Chicago: Starlin Castro for Orlando Cabrera.
The Cubs have a lot of good players that I'd never want on my team. Gotta go with the SS of the future. Chose this over Mike Fontenot for Paul Janish.

Milwaukee: Ryan Braun for Johnny Gomes.
I'm assuming we can't trade the same guy twice or else this would easily be Gallardo for Harang.

Pittsburgh: Andrew McCutcheon for Drew Stubbs.
The only guy who's better than his Reds equivalent on the Bucs so this was easy.

Houston: Matt Lindstrom for Francisco Cordero.
God the Astros are terrible. Not a single guy that I would want to trade for. I'll just say Lindstrom as a cost cutting trade.

Rays - javier Vazquez for David Price - Do I need to explain more?

He STILL refuses to go to Triple A to sort his shit. He seems to think he'll magically come back to form when he gets into a game, even though Jerry Manuel has more or less said he's unusable out of the bullpen. Furthermore, several members of the team are furious at him and have implored management to give Perez an ultimatum - either go to Triple A or get out.

If this gets any worse, they may actually so something very un-Mets-like and eat $20M to DFA him. Would be amazing to get him the fuck out. Funny thing is, I bet even if he is DFA'ed, he'd get claimed instantly since the claiming team would only have to pay him league minimum.</font>

In Perez' defense though, the Mets didn't have to give him a right to refuse a demotion in his contract. What's the point of putting it in the contract if you're not supposed to use it when the time comes? What other situation exists where Perez would want to use that right besides this exact scenario?

It's just horrible foresight by Mets management.

Detroit Tigers fantasy swap

From the Twins: Joe Mauer for Gerald Laird
From the Royals: Alberto Callapso for Brandon Inge
From the White Sox: Sergio Santos for Ryan Perry
From the Cleveland Indians: Shin Soo Choo for Ryan Rayburn

<font color=goldenrod>It has nothing to do with Perez' contract. Being able to refuse demotion has to do with service time. I don't know what the exact time frame is, but once you reach a certain number of years in the bigs, you can refuse demotion to the minor leagues. It's one of MLB's quality control policies to try and keep teams from sending down veterans, but in situations like this it looks really retarded.</font>

<font color=goldenrod>Yeah, I don't get why Perez is so against it. He'll still be getting paid and he may be able to save SOME face by going down. Steve Trachsel agreed to let the Mets send him down in 2001 after he became the only pitcher in team history to give up 4 HRs in one inning, and he wound up reinventing himself and having a solid career with the team.

Hell, even Jerry has jabbed him in the media:

Reporter: "Do you feel that keeping Ollie in long relief is a hindrance to the team?"
Jerry: "Only when we need a long reliever."</font>

Maybe he doesnt want to risk get nabbed on waivers?

Phils are down 3-0 in the bottom of the first and it's currently in a rain delay.

And I have 0 confidence that they can come back.

Didn't take long for Dontrelle Willis to find a new home.

Tigers trade D-Train and some cash to the Diamondbacks for Billy Buckner. The Tigers will also pay the rest of Willis' contract, which is about $8 mil.

<font color=goldenrod>The more I see Mike Pelfrey, the more I'm convinced he's for real.

If you would have told me before the season started that Mike Pelfrey would not only be really good, but actually look like a very safe bet for the All Star Team, I'd have asked you to pass over what you were smoking.</font>

Yeah I was watching the Dbacks yesterday and couldn't believe I saw Rodrigo Lopez. He looks so much older. Remember when the O's "young guns" were Lopez, Bruce Chen and Daniel Cabrera. What happened there

M's manager Don Wakamatsu says it's effective immediately, but I heard from Mike Kay during the Yanks game just now that he's done at the halfway point of the season.
