I feel bad for all the coaches, fans, and owners who had to endure 20 innings of eating sunflower seeds and watching baseball. How can they go on after enduring such a trial?

If it was a playoff game then it would be acceptable since you could argue both teams want to win it more but as an early season regular game probably not even worth it to go past a few innings into extra innings. The bullpen alone for both teams pitched well over 400 pitches.

Evil Vito
04-18-2010, 01:50 AM
Yeah some people think LaRussa pretty much gave up the game by bringing in position players to pitch as opposed to letting a starting pitcher go, but I dunno. Pelfrey only pitched because he pitched 2 days ago so it was his throw-day anyway.

Evil Vito

This is why baseball is clearly the best sport. Today featured a 20-inning game and a no-hitter on the same day......and it's not even the first time in baseball history that that's happened.

My congrats to Skippy and his Rockies for Jimenez's no hitter.

Jerry Manuel got a stay of execution for that game. 20 innings just for a 2-1 win? Come on. I feel bad for the bullpens who gotta do this all again today, whoever are the starters for this game better go deep.

Shit, yeah...John Maine is pitching. Probably the worst guy on the staff to throw out there after such a long game last night. Even when he's pitching well I feel like he reaches 100 pitches by 5 innings. Feliciano and K-Rod were the only two bullpen guys to not throw at least 30 pitches in the game, and even then K-Rod estimated that he threw about 100 warmup pitches in total, so even he may be unavailable.

Maine's rotation spot is on the line, so I hope he brings it tonight.

Evil Vito
04-18-2010, 11:31 AM
Well, that solves it. Mets will get a fresh arm in the bullpen for tonight's game by recalling minor league starting pitcher Tobi Stoner. Fantastic name.

I'd guess Maine and Stoner will both be pushed to the limit tonight, even if they get rocked.

So the Cardinals could score 20 tonight?

I think it'd be hilarious if the Mets used position players on the mound.

OssMan
04-18-2010, 02:27 PM
Felipe Lopez's 1-2-3 18th inning was one of the most obnoxiously hilarious things I have seen in recent sporting history. The fucking dumbass relief pitcher on the Mets swung at like 6 straight balls and then somehow actually got a hit and the 3B or whoever overthrew first by a mile so the dude starts jogging into second and Pujols guns him down cause he didn't slide.

Wow, that's a bit surprising. Mets DFA Mike Jacobs to make room for Tobi Stoner. I assumed they were going to just send down Raul Valdes or something.

But it looks like the Jacobs experiment is officially over, and I'd expect Stoner to only be on the roster for tonight, and then either they give Chris Carter a chance...or they've realized it's time for Ike Davis to take his place. Poor Murph might not even get a chance to start regularly this year if that happens.

A) A pitcher

Tbh, I think the main reason it would have been funny if it were a Yankee (esp a really high regarded one, like Jeter or Rivera) would be listening to Francesa. I guarantee he would turn a blind's eye to it. "They are under e-naw-muss presshuh". Whereas if it were a Met he'd rip them to shreds.

According to Jon Heyman, it's Edinson Volquez. 50 games for PED use.
But he gets to serve it while he's on the DL so essentially he's just losing 50 games worth of pay. They should make him wait to serve it til he comes off the DL. Not right.

Supreme Olajuwon

But he gets to serve it while he's on the DL so essentially he's just losing 50 games worth of pay. They should make him wait to serve it til he comes off the DL. Not right.

Is this the way it works? You would think there'd be something in place where the player couldn't serve his suspension while he's on the DL and not able to play anyway.

Dragon
04-20-2010, 05:01 PM
I actually think he has to wait until he's off the DL to serve the 50 game suspension. I know Cliff Lee was supposed to serve his 5 game suspension when he got off the DL (think he got it overturned though).

Dragon
04-20-2010, 05:05 PM
Ah, just read that his suspension begins on April 21. Pretty huge loophole there then. So if suspended for throwing at a batter or something like that you have to wait until you're off the DL to serve the suspension but if you fail a drug test you can serve it while you're still DLed? Kinda weak.

WOw, Heyward looks like the real deal.

He could have a Pujols like rookie year.

Boomer
04-21-2010, 03:04 PM
He has essentially been the Braves' motivation all season. Every time he hits the dugout, I get the feeling that even Chipper feels like he has to perform better to match this guy's intensity.

I haven't seen many guys fly around the bases like Heyward did last night on his home run. And that's the second bottom of the 9th, two out home run he's hit already this year, though the first didn't end up meaning anything. He was 1-4 last night, but nobody cares because he brings it every at-bat. And two nights before he won the game for the Braves. I'm just not sure what else you can ask for a rookie in the first 15 games of the season.

Boomer
04-21-2010, 03:06 PM
And the funny thing is that all Braves fans were talking about before the season started was whether keeping Heyward in Gwinnett for two months would really have an effect on the Braves season.

But he answered that question almost immeadiately.

Wikipedia used to have the whole list of no-hitters and perfect games in a nice organized list but I believe the game did in fact go into extra innings and either an error or a few walks was the difference between the winning and losing pitcher. Its defiantly in the earlier years of baseball though (pre-1950s).

Is it related in any way to him being hit in the head last year by a pitch since when it occurs with pitchers, they tend to change their whole style during the season or the next season (ex. Matt Clement on Red Sox) ?

Yeah, seems like he's peaking out at around 88 this year so far. Hopefully he's able to get his arm strength up to par soon. He obviously isn't gonna have the season he had last year with Atlanta but I still think he'll be solid.

The guy has a huge amount of pressure for his next start though. Pressure he shouldn't have this early in the season but its gonna be there. A lot of people in NY still hate him for when he gave up the grand slam to Damon years back so he definitely isn't gonna have it easy.

Dragon
04-26-2010, 08:02 PM
Also, Girardi really needs to stop playing Marcus Thames in the outfield. He makes Damon look like superman out there. Not really sure why he feels the need to platoon Gardner anyway, the guys hitting great so far. I don't really like Thames that much in any instance but if Girardi really feels the need to play him then let him DH once in a while.

He looked like a clown on that ball Wood hit yesterday that let a couple runs score. He literally stood there for 5 seconds before he tried to get in position to catch the ball.

MLB has decided to tweak a few things in the all star game.

Starting this year:

Both leagues now play with a DH. Even if a the event is held in a NL ballpark. The NL DH will be chosen by the Manager.

Elected pitchers who pitch on the sunday before the all-star game will not be able to participate. They will be replaced.

1 more position player will be added to the rosters.

And a re-entry rule is in effect. If a player has been injured during the game, a player who has already been out there can go back out and fill in.

Being smoked by a baseball was nothing after that.

I think that there will be a significant increase in black players within the next decade. Selig's aim is to create an RBI initiative in every major city. Once that is complete, more kids will be playing baseball in the inner cities. It's a shame too, because more kids get drafted in the MLB draft each year than the NBA and NFL drafts combined. If you're looking for a pay day then baseball is the way to go. The only thing is that there are not as many scholarships available for baseball as basketball and football.

There is also an economic reason behind the surge of Carribean/S. American players on MLB teams since its cheaper to run development camps and sign players than creating and signing domestic minority players.

MLB gets its diversity in players but at the cost of African-American players more than other groups.

Granderson probably headed to the DL. Gonna be an adventure with Thames in LF every day.

Curtis G to the 15 day DL. Gardner will take over centerfield for the time being while Winn and Thames split leftfield duties.

Just traded Vasquez, bit of a gamble, because I don't believe he's this bad, but I'm so low in the standings, gotta do something. Too many pitchers under performing.

Teixeira has 5 hits the past two games. He had 11 all of April. Pretty absurd how quickly he changes as soon as May hits.

The Braves are fucking terrible. I don't think I have a reason to post in here anymore, at least until Heyward stops slumping or something.

I have returned.

Adrian Gonzalez says he will not play in the 2011 All Star Game if it remains in Arizona.

If more top-flight Hispanic players follow suit I'd have to guess it gets moved eventually.

Swish the Dish and Cano doing mega damage these past few games. That and the fire under Teixeira's ass has been lit yet again.

Love it.

If Aaron Hill can get his bat going, the Jays will be offensively dangerous.

Wrigley Report

So we drove in saturday morning. Checked into the Marriott on the Magnificent Mile. We took the Red Line ( hated this ) to Addison and practically walked off and right into the whole Wrigley area. This was amazing. It's like a tiny city built for Cubs baseball. We ended up going into the Sports Corner until the game. Once we got into Wrigley, our seats were literally the very top along the 1st base line, but the thing is, they were great seats. You could see everything. And no one really bought seats up there so were just getting drunk, shooting the shit with other people in the stands and watching big floppy titted hotties walk bye constantly. Honestly, there were so many gorgeous females at Wrigley. Tits flopping and bouncing. It must have been no braw day and it was fannnnnnnnnnntastic.

The game itself was great if you could get past the Carlos Silva stinch that was smellable from where we were sitting. Several lead changes. The epic moment was obviously Soriano's 2 run HR. Everyone was going nuts when he didnt get the ball 4 count, but then he crushes it and it was bonkers. When he went back out to the outfield the next innning, the crowd was going nuts for him.

After the game we hung out for a bit. Got some subway. Then got on the Red Line and headed back. Every place around our hotel had big time wait times. We tried PF Changs, ESPN Zone. We ended up mixing in some intense air hockey when we were at ESPN zone. Two of my buddies went to some chinese place and me and another buddy went to California Pizza Kitchen . It was decent.

Great time. Chicago is huge!!!!!!!!!!!!! The buildings where everywhere. It was kinda awesome and i cant wait to go back.

We also debated who would be the celeb who would sing Take Me Out To the Ball Game. We were all convinced it would be a B list celeb. I was rolling with Billy Dee Williams as my guess. We were pumped when we saw Vince Vaughn singing it. And the 7th inning stretch was every bit as awesome as I thought it would be.

I'm definetly catching atleast 1 more game this year. Maybe more. I had so much fun.

Little meaningless moments like getting tanked before the game at Sports Corner and making fun of all the douche bags doing there different stupid poses for pictures at the Harey Carey statue, that make this 3 hours trip awesome.

I cant tell you how close i was to buying a shirt that said " Puljos mows my lawn ". If we hadnt gone into the stadium when we did, that transaction was happening.

8 in a row  No matter what happens to the rest of the series, coming in there and totally clobbering them tonight makes the series a success IMO.

Don't think I've been this happy with the Mets since their 10 game winning streak in mid-08 that vaulted them right back into contention.

Good for the Mets that they could beat the Phillies worst starting pitcher :y:

Great series for the Mets
