Ain't happening. If Vazquez can continue to pull his weight, there's no point to go after Lee. If anything, we'll be looking for a bat around the trade deadline to fill in for Nick Johnson.
But it does baffle me that all the cash Seattle threw around this offseason they wouldn't be this bad.

I dunno about Lee, I'd be for it but he needs to sign an extension or a new contract, I don't want to give everything up just to get him for three months.
And where is he gonna go? Javy isn't bad lately, Hughes is awesome, and the other 3 are solid.

About that Cliff Lee stuff, I highly doubt the Yankees go after him.
They've passed on Santana, Sabathia (via trade) and Halladay in recent years. And those were all in years where their rotation was much less stable. Right now they have 5 solid starters. Barring a big injury to one of the 5 starters I see them passing since it really isn't even necessary right now. The way the lineup has been going with injuries I see that as their main concern.
I think its a given that they go after him in the offseason as a free agent though.
Dragon
06-12-2010, 10:19 PM
Also, what are the chances Lee actually signs an extension with a team that trades for him? Wasn't he traded from Philly because he wasn't interested in discussing an extension and wanted to hit the market as a free agent?
McLegend
06-12-2010, 10:30 PM
He was interesed in an extension. I think the Phillies thought his agent was asking for too much.
The Yankees can easily win the World Series without Cliff Lee, but if you get Lee that's like the best ever Postseason rotation. No way they lose.

I'm so glad this ridiculous Braves road trip is over. They've played the fewest home games in baseball, and have had one of the best home records so far this year. Not to mention they've played for 20 straight days...the off day tomorrow is well needed.
And I think its getting pretty close to the point where Chipper needs to figure his shit out or go home. At this point, I'm not sure he will ever get back to form...he's never had a slump this bad in his career.

The apology and him knowing he made a huge blunder helped Joyce a lot since it confirmed a lot of the reasons why he is well liked by the players.
From what I read, a lot of the players hate the antics Bucknor does on certain calls and strike-outs more than a general "hatred" on Joe West for his ego/eagerness to toss anyone out of a game.

Selig awards 2012 All-Star game to Kansas City which means Fenway lost out on celebrating its 100th anniversary with the All-Star game. I think another AL West team was the only other contenders.

Or not have an owner who is a penny pincher.
One reason KC had a new stadium built was the owner/group made a promise to bring an all-star game to the city since Selig has been known to give out all-star games to teams with new stadiums as an "econimic boost" to owners/cities.

Good for KC. I haven't been there, but my brother has and he say it's a great park.
As a Boston fan, obviously I'd like to see it in Fenway, but whatever. It will be back eventually.
I would contend that it would have been nice to have the 100th Anniversary gimmick, and then Kansas City could host it any other AL year...
Then again, Boston did host it in 1999, and as a baseball market we have plenty to be happy about, so I am happy for the KC fans.

Kaufman Stadium is a pretty ballpark. Good for them.
Looking at Wikipedia, Boston had it last in '99, the Royals in '73. The team going the longest without hosting, the Mets. Who hosted back in 1964.
I think a team should make a playoff appearance in the last 10 years to be able to host the All-Star Game, or at least post a winning record.
Looking back this sounds a bit ridiculous. Kauffman Stadium is a very nice stadium and I'm happy for the fans in Kansas City. Hopefully they get to see an AL victory since their team has been so terrible for so many seasons (except '03 :$ ).
As crazy as it seems, I dont think the Cubs are out of the division yet. 6.5 back dont sound so bad considering Lee and Ramirez havent been hitting. Fukudome and Soto have cooled off. I was just reading that Citi Field is favored to get it in 2013 by far, and Minnesota's new Target field in 2014.
I guess The Cubs are also making a push to get it in 2014, to commemorate Wrigley's 100th anniversary? That's an AL year though. I doubt they'd spring for that if they didn't choose Fenway for 2012.
The Marlins and Nationals are both requesting the 2015 game. Marlins have a new park opening in a couple years.

If they didn't have the allstar game at gay ass old Yankee Stadium in 2008, then it would make more sense for New York to get one in 2013, but if they do that in it's in New York twice in five years. They have to give one to Citi Field and of course the new Yankee Stadium, so that's gonna be 3 times in no more than 10 years that it's in New York.

You're right- I know we probably sound like the stereotypical never die Cubs fan, but in a division that the Cards could be running away with, with our win today, we're 6 back of the Cards, and 6.5 from the Reds, who I don't take as a real threat. Hopefully the Yankees get their #3 and 4 hitters back sometime this year.
Girardi needs to do something to shake up the lineup but there really are only 3 guys hitting at all right now. Moving Tex and his .220 average out of the 3 spot for a while would be a good start. Kind of amazing how bad he is still doing this late in the season.
I can't believe the AL East right now. The best record in baseball is shared by the Rays and Yankees, and the Red Sox have the 2nd best record and are only 1 game back now.

I can't believe the AL East right now. The best record in baseball is shared by the Rays and Yankees, and the Red Sox have the 2nd best record and are only 1 game back now.
Going to the Sox/Dodgers game today for my first interleague game. Hopefully they get to Vicente Padilla early since Wakefield will probably need all the run support he can get.
Even crazier is Torono in 4th place in the A.L. East is in the top 6/7 for records in the A.L. and around top 10/11 in all of MLB.

Current Record 1962 Mets 40-120-1
Record through 67 Games: 19-48
2010 Orioles through 67 games 18-49
The Os worst season ever was 1988 when they started 0-21 and finished 54-107. Through 67 games that season they were 18-49, same as this year. But at that point, the 1988 Orioles were 9-11 over their last 20 games, this year they are 3-17.

Pretty puzzling move on the part of the Mariners. I'm guessing their goal is to hope Branyan heats up and then they'll trade him for more than they gave up for him, but I dunno.

The fact that the Mariners traded for Branyan makes me think they are trying for one more run before officially giving up on the season. I don't exactly blame them, but it's a stretch to think they can crawl back into it with the way the Rangers have been playing.
I still think the Twins have the edge since Wilson Ramos is expendable due to being blocked by Mauer. Even if Mauer doesn't catch throughout the length of his contract, I'd have to figure he still has at least 5 years behind the plate.
I don't think the Mets will even try to make a trade for him until just before the deadline. They have to see if their starting pitching can continue to hold up, and if Beltran can come back full-strength. I'm extremely hesitant to give up Mejia, the guy got big league hitters out at 20 years old. It's been a long time since they had a legit ace in the making in the minors. I also can't see them trading Pagan unless Beltran came back and raked right out of the gate, which I can't really see happening.

Letting him walk and grabbing two top draft picks wouldn't be the worst thing in the world, even if you do have to part with Mejia.
2 (hopefully 3) months of Lee, Santana, Pelfrey, Niese (and Dickey if he continues his amazing run) is hard to pass up. Manuel is either gonna cave in from the pressure of the fanbase/media and add him on, or Bud Selig is gonna call him up and "convince" him to put in. Only thing that can stop Strasburg really is if he pitches the sunday before the game.

I hope Strasburg makes the team as he's pretty much the only thing interesting and fun to watch from the Nationals.
The entire baseball world is talking about him, so why not showcase his talent? Just a week ago, the AL starting first basemen was batting .230, so it's obvious (as it's been the past several years) that the All-Star game is all about marketing baseball's biggest stars, regardless of stats. I still think fan voting is retarded if the game is actually supposed to mean something. If you want it to be a popularity contest, that's fine...but don't put home field advantage on the line.
Anyway, all I really care about this year is getting Wright into the starting role. He'll probably be there anyway with Polanco just being put on the DL...but Wright he deserves more than the title of "fill-in". I'd also love to see Mike Pelfrey make the team, but I think Strasburg is gonna swipe his spot. Hopefully he can at least be a Final Vote candidate.
Guys like Pujols are so far ahead that I usually give my votes to a guy like Joey Votto. I also couldn't help but vote for Junior since he's still on the ballot. Would have been hilarious if he had won and his last game was the ASG.

Fan voting would be much better if it wasn't for the fact of MLB allowing around 25 votes per person/IP address and probably releasing an official voting list later in the season instead of at the start of the season.
It seems all MLB does with the lists is place the default popular names and then add a few new ones instead of waiting a few months then release the lists based on Top 10 or season stats.
NBA has a worse problem than MLB with fan voting to be fair but NBA is marketed all around star players than teams or players who deserve a chance that year.

It took 78 games for an Orioles player playing first base to hit a home run, but Wigginton did it tonight finally.
They are playing better over the last week or so, but against the As and Nationals so it doesn't count.

Emperor Smeat
06-30-2010, 11:05 PM
Delcarmen is good for only 1 thing and that is to end extra inning games so Francona can save his bullpen for a future game. He's such a weird player since most of the time he sucks but then once in a while gets hot or does a great job which makes it hard to just release him.
This is the same guy who complained last year about Billy Wagner eating up innings that might have normally been his when Red Sox made the trade last year.

Fuckin' out for another season. Snapped something in like his wrist or somewhere Tuesday night during the Minnesota game suddenly, as in just from throwing 1 pitch. And Joel Zumaya is like one of my favorite Detroit pitches right now, not just because of his pitch speeds, but also because he was the perfect set-up guy for us before bringing in the closer.
3 straight years, who the fuck would've thunk lightning would strike 3 damn times in a row? I hate to say this but I'm beginning if it would even be worth the bother to even keep him around next year.

Apparently Cliff Lee told his Mariners teammates that he's pretty certain Tuesday was his last start as a Mariner.
Twins don't really want to trade Ramos, Yankees aren't being aggressive, Dodgers and Rangers aren't financially stable. That leaves the Mets and Phillies...and it wouldn't shock me if Lee told the Mariners GM that he really doesn't want to go right back to the team that dumped him for Halladay.
Also, Lee pitched on the same day as Hisanori Takahashi, so he could go right into his slot. Tak is better in the bullpen, anyway.

07-01-2010, 02:08 PM
Peter Gammons has been saying the Reds might be willing to part with Yonder Alonso to get Lee. I don't think that's a bad idea. Mike Leake's gonna get shut down eventually, Homer Bailey's arm is still acting up, Volquez is coming back but he's a big question mark, and who knows what will happen with Harang. So really the Reds only have Arroyo and Cueto as set starters for the rest of the season. Plus Alonso has to move to left field to ever crack the Reds starting lineup. This could work.

The only guys Omar's taken off the table completely in terms of young players are guys already playing a major role on the big league roster (namely Ike Davis and Jon Niese). They also don't want to trade Pagan unless they know for sure that Beltran is back to normal...and even then, Pagan's a perfect 4th OF.
I think Omar will have to part with one of 20 year old RHP Jenrry Mejia or 18 year old 3B/SS Wilmer Flores...but I don't think he'd include both. I'm pretty sure C Josh Thole would be gone as well. There would also probably be a 3rd player, probably either RHP Jeruys Familia (if they trade Flores) or OF Fernando Martinez (if they trade Mejia).

Last night's game makes me wonder whether or not trading for Cliff Lee is even worth it. The Mets once again failed to give Santana any run support, it's disgusting. You're paying the dude $130M and can't even take advantage when he pitches his heart out. The offense probably would fold when Lee is pitching, too.
Fortunately, Strasburg's had the same problem the last two starts...hopefully that'll continue on Saturday. :o

lol damn. I'm taking a look at Monday's reveal of the ASG polling (polls closed yesterday). Assuming the voting tallies stay where they're at now, and everybody with injuries (Utley, Polanco, Heyward), get replaced...here's the lineups I came up with (I just used whoever was runner-up in the poll at each position):
National League
Starting Lineup
SS – Hanley Ramirez, Florida Marlins
2B – Martin Prado, Atlanta Braves
1B – Albert Pujols, St. Louis Cardinals
DH – Joey Votto, Cincinnati Reds
3B – David Wright, New York Mets
RF – Andre Ethier, Los Angeles Dodgers
LF – Ryan Braun, Milwaukee Brewers
CF – Jayson Werth, Philadelphia Phillies
C – Yadier Molina, St. Louis Cardinals
American League
Starting Lineup
RF – Ichiro Suzuki, Seattle Mariners
SS – Derek Jeter, New York Yankees
1B – Justin Morneau, Minnesota Twins
3B – Evan Longoria, Tampa Bay Rays
2B – Robinson Cano, New York Yankees
CF – Josh Hamilton, Texas Rangers
DH – Vladimir Guerrero, Texas Rangers
C – Joe Mauer, Minnesota Twins
LF – Carl Crawford, Tampa Bay Rays
---
AL lineup is downright scary and shits all over the NL one. Nothing like having a guy batting .230 in the ASG. I could also probably see Charlie Manuel making Ryan Howard his DH instead of Joey Votto, but fuck that noise.
Also with the AL lineup you're going to get three lefties in a row at some point no matter what, so I was tempted to flip Jeter and Crawford's spots...but I can't see Girardi batting Jeter 9th.
I'll be bored today, so I'll probably take a guess at the full rosters later on.

I remember when he signed his current deal he said he was planning on it being his last...but I'm not sure even he realized he'd still be this good at age 40. He could go another 3-5 years at max efficiency if he wanted to.

I'm not of the opinion that you can blame Hinch and Byrnes for the bullpen for being THIS bad. Because that's basically what this is. When they hired Hinch, I figured that he would be around for a while, trying to build something long term....they should have been contending for the NL West this year, but mostly because of the bullpen, they haven't.
That said, Jerry DiPoto (and Peter Woodfork) has been one of the more sought after GM candidates in the past few years, so it's good to see them get a little shine. And I can't complain about Gibby.

Manuel might end up with 5 first basemen on his roster. Dunno how you couldn't take any of Pujols, Votto, Gonzalez, Glaus, and Howard.
Evil Vito
07-02-2010, 03:49 PM
I think Glaus might be left behind or relegated to the Final Vote so as to not load up too much on one position, but I dunno. I expect the combo of Pujols, Votto, Gonzalez, and Howard to hold down the 1B and DH spots throughout the game. I'd also have to guess they will definitely be bringing along 3 3B, with Wright starting and Rolen/Zimmerman on the bench. Zimmerman pretty much has to go as the Nationals rep unless Manuel's decided he's definitely taking Strasburg. I kinda see Manuel letting the fans decide on Straburg via Final Vote tho.
