I had her at 7 and Dojima at 8. Seems to be built that way by design since both get locked by multiple social stat checks, just the game's way of kicking you while youre down I guess.

I maxed dojima but I couldnt get my expression maxed before i lost her...

I was stalling them both even after my stats were good enough because they gave free affinity through the story and I thought it would be enough to tide me over until end game. Then that first note arrived.

I dunno.... I answered how I felt...basically told Yusuke that we didnt have enough info (Ive have a suspect as to who is really behind it) and I yelled at him at the end...that was prolly a mistake but they were trying to murder a guy by committing the crime they wanted to kill him for...it FELT right. It was probably wrong.

You got it right, I said the wrong thing about motives and everyone just kind of broke down and left. If you get that bit wrong the game immediately skips to Yu going home with no resolution, so if that didn't happen you're on course to the good ending.

Ultra Mantis
05-03-2018, 08:47 PM
That stat check before her dungeon is a false flag, if you have high enough courage to ask her she just turns you down and the game says you'll have to wait for an opportunity to become closer haha. There's an NPC you need to find before she'll hang out with you, not sure if he's still there in December though.

Mother link is just really lame tbf.

Finished the main quest line of God War. What a god damn game. Phenomenal narrative. One of gaming's best, easily.

Definitely going to be a sequel

Thor and Odin, while talked about throughout the game, never actually show up. This game focuses on Freya and Baldur. Thor's sons Magni and Modi show up as Baldurs underlings. End of the game reveals the kid to be Loki.

I imagine the next game will feature Thor as the main antagonist, with Odin rounding out the new trilogy.

You'd think I'd be disappointed in Thor or Odin not even appearing, but they are talked about enough where they definitely still feel like they have a presence. But mainly I'm not upset because they did such a great job with Baldur and the overarching conflict with him throughout the game. I'm glad they dedicated all that time to him and saved the others for later, because he's an absolutely fantastic antagonist throughout.

There's a post game now. Complete different activities to get the best armor sets in the game game so you can stand up to the special enemies which I assume lead to a special cutscene if you beat all of them.

Almost as mind-blowing as DAMN iNATOR's hyperlink shaming, anti-accessibility stance. There is just no place for this sort of behaviour in 2018 :nono:.

I found out about the final dungeon because I looked up what I'd done wrong when I got the bad ending and it said something about going to Junes instead of going home on the last day. Would not have figured that out at all on my own. Thought that NPC was suspicious as hell (doubly so when no part time job actually came up) but then like the first three or four NPCs you meet are all pretty dodgy, figured it was a red herring but nope, was really happy that paid off.

Haha Chie is my least favourite of the golden gang and it's definitely a lot to do with the voice. The Kanji stuff is pretty odd because he just doesn't sound like Kanji in a couple of scenes, most of the time he's fine. Even when he's chill he's usually got this brash "loudness" to him, but his Rank 10 scene in particular he's so soft spoken it just doesnt feel right.

Agreed, P5 soundtrack is leaps and bounds ahead, nothing wrong with P4's at all but it's nowhere near as epic. That moment when Signs of Love doesn't play at home anymore is the one place P4's sound design really got me.

Played a little Splatoon 2 this afternoon, it's a lot of the same from the first game which is great. Loved the remixed music with similar motifs, noticed some slight improvements, though I did also notice that the lack of Gamepad really hurts. Splatoon 1 really was one of the few games that really utilized that gamepad well, how it had the map displayed on the gamepad and you could take a quick look at it to see which areas need to be inked and you could tap it real quick to travel to someone else's spot. Having to pull up the map on the TV is a whole lot slower.

Just started it last night and really enjoying it.

As am I. Still has some of the... annoyances... of the first, though. A friend of mine said "If they spent six more months on it, it could have been Game Of The Year." I'm inclined to agree. Already had some issues with graphical/engine hiccups... including an instance of teleporting through a ladder I was climbing into the building's interior and becoming stuck on furniture. The only way out was to join a friend of mine's multiplayer game and go back (after helping him out a bit, of course).

It does appear they did away with the "game world still runs while you're not playing" mechanic, which is nice on one hand, but also means you can't start a major construction project before you turn the game off for the session and expect it to be built when you start playing again tomorrow.

Multiplayer is handled fairly well and cool in a number of ways - chief among them is you actually aren't stuck with your initial pick. You can swap talent with anyone from YOUR own community reguardless if you are hosting or not. Just anything you put in storage goes to the host. Anything you get from storage comes from your box. So if you load up on painkillers and ammo, and then decide you don't need it, you're better off switching characters, or you're going to basically give up your own goods.

Items are sharable if you place them on the ground for another player to pick up, and the dropped item(s) are clearly marked.

Also, every player becomes color-coded, and different parts of the same environment become searchable to the person of the corresponding color (host is yellow, player two is blue, player 3 is green. I am assuming player 4 is red, but never got on with a fourth yet.) So, a house that originally had 3 diffrent pieces of searchable furniture can end up with like 10 or so.

You do have to stay about 400m in range of the host, though, or you'll disconnect (represented by a big orange ring on the map screen that, ironically, the host can't see). Kinda stops everyone from running to four corners of the map and doing their own thing, but isn't so restrictive that you're joined at the hip or within eyeshot.

Yeah that is one of my few complaints as well. Like half the boss types become semi-regular enemies too and all of them are fairly routine for the rest of those fights except for maybe the Dark Elf Sorcerer. Also wish the last boss was different. It was an epic fight, to be sure, but I would have probably used someone else (even though there weren't many options set up, tbf) at that point and saved that moment for the sequel.

I also get why making the comparison would be hard. The games are very different. But the formula/gameplay/world for this one as well as the way the story is told are just so far beyond what came before that it puts this one way beyond the previous games for me. And I loved those games. This one is just something else.

It dropped down to £20 so I picked it up, played the demo last year and liked it. It seemed like a Shinto / Samurai based Dark Souls, if Dark Souls was a lot less polished. Kinda more campy, kinda less fair. I'm interested, but not in any rush to play it either haha.

You know there is an "unstick" option on the radio that rewinds you about 10 seconds?

Bloodstained Curse of the Moon

Saw the vid, and as I didn't kickstart RotN, this was an unexpected surprise for me. Looks like CV:III but with the bonus of being able to swap all characters instead of sacrificing one for another, and that got my attention. Does it play like it? If so, I'm sold.

Also to your rep castlevania 2 was my first too and that game gets a bad rap thanks to that avgn vid. Its underrated

No, it gets a bad rap because it is severely flawed. AVGN played it up for comedy, but it was pretty shit.

I liked the concept of the game too, and they thankfully eventually honed this primative idea into the outstanding Symphony of the Night, but there was a lot you had to "figure out" not because the puzzles were clever, but because the dialog with ANYONE or the clues found ANYWHERE really didn't help jack shit and the whole idea was so far removed from the first game. I had to use three different hint books (pre internet) to try to play it front to back without cheat codes that give you everything at the beginning. There is a lot of click adventure logic (use item x in right spot) at work without the added benefit of being written well enough to let you know where the right spot is. And figuring out how the map worked... not intuitive at all.

Castlevania 2 was one of the first games that I liked in concept of to keep playing in spite of the bad execution. Like an early Skyrim. They were just a couple decades early for the patch culture we "enjoy" now. If at least the localization was up to scratch, then I would prob'ly hand you "underrated".

But I will say, the "suffering" was worth it if only for being a crucible old gamers like us were forged in. That, and the easter egg in Dust: An Elysian Tail.

It def plays like it and if you have a castlevania itch that needs scratching this should do it. Some of the staff from the original Castlevania games worked on this and it honestly feels like it.

As far ad Castlevania 2 goes think of the time frame. Really ambitious and innovative. Flawed? Of course. But when i first played it it blew me away. So many things that built the immersion of that game.

Its far from perfect but gaming was in its infancy.

Obviously 3 is better on pure gameplay but 2 felt like a world. Towns felt alive and large. Night was tense are the fear of sunset was ever present. The setting, at the time, was a cut above anything out at the time.

It has a lot of flaws, and it would take a bit to list them, but no one ever talks about what it got right. Underrated game is all.

Have faith in Talos.

And F04 is by no means a bad game, its a bad Fallout game that really went off the rails with story, or kinda railroaded us (pun intended) with the story, compared to NV.

The wasteland sadly, was mostly boring. I loved the settlement building but Preston made that as annoying as possible as well, and wish there was more to do with it.

Mods made it quite fun on PC, as it normally fixes any issues with things that bother you. I barely touched the story, settlements were always fun to build up more than the rest of the game.

I liked the boston wasteland more than FO 3 and New Vegas.

The latter games came out during a time when draping everything with a dogshit brown and gun metal grey tone to it. While you could certainly argue that it was fitting for the setting, I was sick of it at that point, and it slightly affected my enjoyment of those games.

FO 4 added more color while still keeping the post apocalyptic feel to it.

But like each TES since morrowind each iteration has lost roleplaying elements until you're left with something that isnt an RPG at all.

With TES it is def kind of the same issue. I never really played Morrowind so I can't gauge what it was like, but I feel like Oblivion hit the RPG sweet spot a hell of a lot better than Skyrim did.

In Oblivion I felt like my skills and stats mattered a hell of a lot more and combat was more....I dunno how to put it, pressing maybe? Felt like I had to think out my strategy more and prepare appropriately or I was going to get crushed. In Skyrim I felt like I was playing a first person action game; my stats mattered a little bit, more so with things like sneaking and lockpicking, but when it came to combat I could get by any encounter with appropriate movement and timing on parries and attacks.

TBH I feel like TESO feels superior as an RPG to Skyrim in nearly everyway. Not superior as a game overall, but definitely as an RPG.

If you liked Oblivion, you'd LOVE Morrowind. If you have an XBOX 360 and can find a used copy of Morrowind on the cheap, I highly recommend picking it up. The only minor issues would be you might have to download a patch on 360 if you don't have an original XBOX, to allow it to be played as a backward compatible game, and also there's a bug in the game that literally due to one line of code left out, your game could randomly crash with a bogus error saying your disc may be dirty or damaged and to press A to retry, but it's patched with a solution that creates a backup save from immediately before the game crashed.

With morrowind the RPG aspects were much greater in the sense that your race attributes and class governerd not only how you played but how people treated you and what mission you could do and how you solved them.

Having a high acrobatics or being argonian (or having alteration magic) would def change how you approached (literally) a situation.

FO3 and FO:NV were similar. Having a high explosives could let you do a mission completely different. You felt like who you were was impacting the game.

With Skyrim and FO4 none of that means anything. A worrior who knows a single spell can be arch mage.

Thats not what role playing is...at all.

If you are going to start a legacy campaign...

... equip the three folks you are planning on using again with all the gear, base mods, and ammo (and at least one gas can between them) you can load them up with, even if it encumbers them before you do the last leader mission.

Unlike when you run the first game on endless, your shit doesn't transfer here, and once you complete that final mission, the game isn't kidding about not being able to access that base ever again. You can't even switch characters from your leader. So, if that person isn't one of the three, you're totally hosed.

You lose everything you saved up in the box on the restart. I had a LOT of good guns and ammo that got wiped.

Have gone back to playing Fallout 4 after discovering the Sim Settlements mod and its accompanying expansions Industrial Revolution and Rise of the commonwealth.

Sim Settlements adds elements of sim city and is meant to make settlements more fun and engaging, as well as making them fit in with the rest of the game better. You lay down plots based on residential, commercial, industrial, etc. Then the settlers start building on those plots themselves based on preset models. From there, you can upgrade those structures over time and your communities needs being met. The settler needs system is far more dynamic and there's even a taxes system.

This all makes settlements feel like more of an organic part of the game as you see these communities grow bigger with your guidance rather than you doing everything for the helpless fucks.

Industrial Revolution adds a ton of new industrial options including branching upgrade trees for industrial plots.

Rise allows you to assign a leader to a settlement from your list of companions and they will build an entire city on their own provided their needs are met. Like the plots in the base mod, there are upgrade levels that make the city bigger and more elaborate. Once fully upgraded they are comparable to cities like Diamond City and Megaton. To achieve this the guy making the mod built a team consisting of the best settlement builders in the community.

I'm only really scratching the surface here. The mod is incredibly deep and has a ton of customization options so you can be totally hands on or let settlers do everything themselves.

It really is a lot to manage at the start. I had having to constantly have food. Also I'm not sure if my characters are going out into the world to scavenge on their own or if I have to send them to do that or if I can. Lots of unknowns for me about the game right now. I get that for some players it's just fun to run around the open world fultoning things and clearing outposts, making your own narrative as you go. If this wasn't mainline MGS then maybe I wouldn't view it as harshly or held it to such a high standard. But it is.

The pacing is terrible, the intro starts with such promise and then it falls into the usual open world trap of sacrificing storytelling for meaningless side quests and endless title sequences or end credits. Repetition upon repetition upon repetition.

Snake isn't Snake, He has barely any personality. He's a passive, mostly silent avatar and that makes the info dump you constantly get from Miller and Ocelot even more obtrusive than the codec spam from previous games. Stunt casting Keifer actually harmed the character, not because he's bad at all but because he's a gimmick and he's barely present. They then double down on this by making your only human support character a mute.

Boss battles are forgettable filler, nothing here even comes close to previous entries which were stacked full of creativity.

The Big Boss heel turn is completely handwaved. The pay-off for the main plot points storylines are rushed, flat, or in some cases entirely unresolved (not entirely Kojima's fault tbf). Narratively it is a complete failure and to me that makes a poor Metal Gear experience. The story beats don't even top Ground Zeroes ffs. The drop in quality from the other numbered games is severe and incredibly disappointing.

Forgot a bunch of details surrounding the big death. Cait Sith "dies" immediately before Aeris and for some reason I found it sadder, there's absolutely nothing sad or even dramatic about it since he's a robot but the scene just plays really weird like it's a major event. Odd.

The last interaction of Cloud / Aeris prior to her leaving the group is him literally beating the shit out of her. That's going to be an interesting scene in the Remake, definitely expect that sort of thing to be changed haha.

I never really got behind CloudxAeris, it seemed like that was the narrative the game wanted to take, Cait Sith pretty much says it outright that they are the OTP, but I guess at this point Cloud is Zack, so there actually never is any CloudxAeris, its all Zack and it was always Zack. Startling admission time: "the big death" wasn't so much of a blow for me as it was many, as *I* was one who assumed Tifa in the first place. You have your big breasted, badass fighter, childhood friend on one hand and some random chick you just met who oozes that annoying, tropey "tee hee hee, look how frail and innocent I am" thing that is apparently culturally sexy, but I never got on board with finding that appealing so I never "got" it. Hell, I didn't know the Gold Saucer date scene was flag dependent, and got Tifa my first time through even though the game is set up to funnel you towards Aerith unless you knew how to do otherwise.

I didn't even use the flower girl all that much, and when I started using her a bit more, it was when she gets her best weapon with all the extra materia slots... which isn't all that long before she bites the dust. I was a bit more upset that I bothered starting to use her more RIGHT BEFORE she goes all Obi Wan. Could've been leveling someone else. Character wise, though, I wasn't really supper attached at all.

I forgot about Cait as well. And I actually remember thinking, when they revealed who he actually was, that the actual person would be joining the party for awhile. Then that never happened.

Definitely one of the most interesting. When I played it when I was young I didn't really feel that way but on subsequent playthroughs as I got older I started to appreciate the conflicted nature of his character more and more.

Tifa was always the one for me. Aerith always seemed somehow distant and too carefree, like she wasn't really interested and was destined for something else. Still didn't soften the big blow when it happened though as I had grown to appreciate her for other reasons. That is still one of the most gut-wrenching moments in gaming history for me, up there with the death and resurrection of Crono and the subsequent scenes with Marle in Chrono Trigger.

Don't know if you guys ever experienced it, but the best Saucer scene is if you somehow get the date with Barret. That was glorious.

I did the Barret date on this playthrough, dude called me a spikey headed fucker and chastised me for not being into any of the girls. This was preceded by 20 seconds of awkward silence during the fireworks display and it totally cracked me.

Was pretty interesting that Cait Sith was the only hero who really called Barret out on his bullshit moral high ground, what AVALANCHE did in the opening was pretty fucking horrific but Aeris/th, Cid, Yuffie, Nanaki and Vince never even touch on the subject of joining forces with a terrorist cell.

Cid was too busy verbally abusing his wife to be on any moral high ground about terrorist cells.

"SIT YOUR ASS DOWN AND DRINK YOUR GODDAMN TEA!!!"

I do like his reaction to wanting to make him party leader after that whole lifestream thing... "Pain in the ass! Forget it!"

lol Cid is such a selfish arsehole, dude was willing to sacrifice the huge materia you've been chasing around Gaea for an entire disc if it meant he got to go into space, but he wasn't willing to burn Shera to a crisp so you know he must really care about her deep down.

So I decided I need a break from heavy gaming and downloaded a few little titles to toy around with.

Yoku's Island Express is super fun. It's like Metroid combined with pinball. I realize that sounds weird but that is exactly what it is. You are a dung beetle rolling your ball around the world, doing quests for other island inhabitants and searching for powerups. Navigation is done by rolling around the world and engaging a massive number of pinball flippers that are everywhere in the environment. Some are just a flipper here or there, other areas have fairly complex puzzles involving tons of them. There are also pinball boss fights. It does have a pretty light hearted story component to fuel your adventure, and it does enough for what it is. Pretty fun game, really liked it and was kind of sad when I finished it. Would definitely play more of the style. It was just so charming lol.

Also got Hot Lava. Remember being a kid and pretending the floor is lava? Yeah. This is that. First person mirrors edge style parkour.....with lava. Hot lava. Straight forward game but surprisingly challenging. Still in early access but there is a pretty good amount of content already. Only 9.99 right now, and it gives you an extra copy to gift to someone through steam. Gave it to my oldest son and now I'm dad of the year (for the next week anyways until he wants something else).

Also saw this little game called Ballistic Golf, also in early access.....but it was only 2.99. 3 bucks, what the hell, I'll give it a go. Typical PC mini-golf game, little rough around the edges in terms of some framerate issues (doesn't effect your play though), but a TON of content for 3 dollars. I want to say there is like 250-ish holes so far, broken down into 9 hole courses, and they constantly add more and more for free. Theres some easy holes on the beginning courses but it ramps up in a hurry. I just played a 9 hole course that was par 157. One hole was like a par 35 LOL. You will get blindsided by some crazy traps you weren't expecting from time to time, but it's hardly upsetting most of the time. But yea, if you want a little mini golf game that you can kill a few minutes here or there with, it's a steal at the price. I can see it being my go to when I only have a little time to play something, at least for the forseeable future.

Also, said this before but

That entire sequence from when Atreus gets sick to the first fight with the chaos blades is one of the most incredible moments ever. They set the tone and built to it so beautifully

Destor

Getting the chaos blades was intense and mark out worthy the whole way. The sequence that got me the most was when Atreus was becoming arrogant. It was breaking my heart to see him behave that way.

Some other things i loved:

valk fights. Cool. Tough. Rewarding.

Baulder and Freyas arc was written very well. The writting of the entire game was brilliant.

The build of Thor was really great and the reveal was pretty rad. The cut to Mjölnir was HYPE.

The Laviathan Axe mechanics were bad ass too in general.

Great puzzles. Some of the optional chests were very tricky. The zelda based items progression fit very well.

Awesome game. I could easily keep going.

Tifa was awesome. I just think the music after the bastard stabs her is what makes the moment for me. The first time I played it I was like 12, just having a blast playing the game, wondering why Cloud was mentally messed up. Then Sephiroth drops from the sky and stabs her through her heart and you are like..........wtf just happened:'(

Haven't hard a game or expansion pack crash this much while playing since either Saints Row II or IV.

Already encountered a puzzle that can become unsolvable and make the DLC unplayable if you quit to the main hub. Another 2-3 random game freezes with one happening during a boss fight.

Ive been playing spintires: mudrunner to hold me over for octopath. It's literally a trucking simulator...with a whole of mud. Everywhere. I end of relying on my winch to get me out of the muck an awful lot. It is a really good sim for what it is though. Some very difficult runs you have to make in that game and I've hardly scratched the surface.

It was kinda funny how I got it though. It's basically the definitive edition of spintires. The original retails for 15ish and the new version retails for 30. Both were 40% off for the steam sale though. And if you own the original, the new version was 50% off....and for some reason those discounts stacked to 90%. So I bought the original for like 8 bucks on steam, then got the new version for 3 dollars at the 90% discount, then immediately refunded the original game. Surprised it worked....but it did lol

I've reached a "stopping point" in Nier Automata, got my first (well, technically second, don't eat the fish) ending at around 30 hours, there is no way I'll finish the next part before Friday so I'm going to have to pick this back up after Octopath. From what I gather it's probably best to take a break now anyway and treat it like a NG+

Really like it though, it's weird as fuck and I'm not sure I have a clue what's going on, but as open worlds go it's really on point. This is a MUCH better game than Horizon Zero Dawn, but Persona 5 of course is still 2017 #1. Soundtrack is also weird as hell but very pleasant, reminds me of Final Fantasy XIII in some ways.

You would've never been able to have defeated Dagoth Ur and saved Vvardenfell to become the Cheesevarine in that amount of time. Therefore, it's a good thing you didn't bark up that tree or you likely would've had to just kill poor Caius Cosades at his Balmora house and severed the thread of prophecy and doomed all of Vvardenfell long before the Red Mountain erupted. :(

Portmanteau word of "cheese" (from Destor's user title) and "Nerevarine". The latter is what your adventurer ends up being named by the 3 tribes of Vvardenfell in Morrowind after completing a set task or trial by a tribes Wise Woman who is their leader. It's also the title bestowed upon the adventurer by the Dædric goddess Aura once you successfully claim a certain ring. You then go on to get what you need for a fight with Dagoth Ur in his own area. Defeating him cements you as the Nerevarine/Lord Nerevar/Nerevar Moon-and-Star.
