I like completing things 100%. It doesn't take as long as it seems as I can skip earlier missions I have already completed 100% and start later into the story, and then quickly go through easier missions, not wasting time exploring stuff. Plus just knowing the basic story helps in knowing what I need to do and what is optional....

Yeah you have to set your chips to accommodate your playstyle or you have a pretty rough time. All the weapon types are viable though and have different move sets so it's all about finding your own preferred style.
Though once you reach a certain point you will be OP as fuck and be able to take down bosses in three hits so it doesn't matter anymore haha. I think there are superbosses out there somewhere but I haven't gained access to them yet, probably have to beat the final boss before you can get to them.

If you can get over the combat the story and characters will make a big impression. Side quests are all pieces of the bigger picture too, almost everything ties in. It's great / super depressing. I wasn't huge on the combat either tbh, but my chip set up in my first run sucked and then by the time I realised I need to fix it I was OP. Doesn't come close to dethroning Persona 5 but i'd comfortably put it as my #2 of 2017 (haven't played the Nintendo big boys yet but this is probably more my kind of game anyway).
The soundtrack is so good though, I can see why it got the nod over P5 in that department even though I prefer P5s music. Everything is so weird and alien, the overworld map theme evolves as you progress through the story to reflect the feeling of what's happening. It's really well put together. Also fucking weird.

Ultra Mantis

1 and 2 are also not like the others, there is no social sim side of the game and they are more in line with the rest of SMT. Heard 2 has a great story and theres a PSP version which might not be as horribly dated, don't know for sure though.
Any version of 4 is fantastic, if you have access to a Vita / PS TV I'd highly recommend Golden for the additional QoL features, but vanilla is fine as is.
3 you have a choice of P3P on PSP or P3 FES on PS2 or PS3 digital store. I've played through FES and the dungeon crawling with AI party members is quite jarring, which is rectified in P3P, however you lose a lot of the daily routine side of things, instead of walking around town you just click through options. Dungeons aside, 3 is very good and I'd recommend trying it out before going to 4, because it will look bad in comparison.

With the most recent DLC, I'm back on State of Decay. The defense/survival of Daybreak is interesting, but really hard to solo as the AI is kinda stupid on prioritizing targets if there are any wall breaches. I tried once with randos, but I had a super laggy connection to the host and kept shooting at zombies that were already dead or in a different spot by the time I actually fired.

Just platinum'd Spider-Man. All the reviews are correct. Some of the tasks can get a touch repetitive and it takes longer than you'd like to learn the controls but it's really good. 8 hours into Ni No Kuni 2.
The game has now become all about kingdom building, which seems pretty good so far. I have to recruit people via sidequests and assign them to jobs, then you can research new equipment / tactics / pikmin etc when you have high enough skilled workers. Its oddly familiar and given what has happened over the past 8 hours I would not at all be surprised if my cute chibi townsfolk go insane and violently murder each other thanks to vocal chord parasites.

Especially the first game. I didn't even so much pick it up on the cheap (~$5) for the story so much as I was really just interested in gaining an appreciation for the one game that didn't seemingly try to be just another GTA copycat.
Speaking of GTA, I'm debating whether it's worth it to keep it just for SP so I can occasionally try to do collections for various trophies I haven't done yet and also randomly switching to Trevor and seeing who I can goad into fights/how much chaos I can sow with him. Online feels way too bloated with content and very grind-y. Might bump it and my saves off sometime next month for those reasons as well as to try and give myself additional space juuuuust in case RDR II needs an inordinately large chunk of my storage.

I mean, I did like the cut-scenes and the story was solid, but I didn't feel compelled to engage in side missions or the races that become available after a while. Also, I don't know for sure but maybe I irrationally soured on it way more after my final decision netted me the ending I got.
Additionally, III brought back items to collect. It brought back Playboy magazines to collect from II, which I didn't feel bothered to collect in either game, plus III adds the things you need to wiretap the junction boxes. This shows collectibles in a certain area. Then you had album covers, Vargas paintings, REPENT Magazines and HOT ROD Msgazines. After II, all the collectibles in III just felt shoehorned in to me.
Not a terrible game, but if I had to recommend the games in a given order I'd just tell anyone to play them in order as that's how they seem to me to be in terms of quality. III just feels a tad uninspired but still an interesting story. 7/10.

Finished Ni No Kuni 2. Honestly...
really disappointed with it.
Outside of the main two characters, none of the party have any development whatsoever. The main party character designs are lazy, almost every single NPC you can recruit has a better design and some of them even get more screen time. Similar to Octopath there is "party banter", but it occurs in a very small text box on the bottom of the screen that doesn't even give you time to read it. None of the banter is voiced either, which would have been a solution to this problem. In fact, hardly anything in the game is voices. You could probably count the number of voiced scenes on your fingers. One third of the party join and then do absolutely nothing, another joins for absolutely no logical reason after his entire plot arc plays out within one short Skirmish. It's just... off.
Speaking of Skirmishes, they are a decent little mini-game but for some reason there are 50 of them and they never really get any more complex or engaging. The rewards for beating them are virtually non existent. There is really no reason to play them unless you are forced to.
Two of the original continents are also "just there". Autumnia and the Winterlands have minute relevance to the entire game (including optional sidequests) and it just makes the whole world feel a bit empty.
Monster designs are also weak, there are literally 16-20 different monster designs. In an RPG. You see the same thing in hour 1 as you do in hour 100. No variety. The ones they do have are also boring as shit. There's a jellyfish, which I guess is the most interesting one there. Hamster, slime, skeleton, dragon, small dragon, fairy, wolf, bird, pig man, robot, golem, other robot, giant mushroom, yeti, giant eel, mouse soldier. No imagination at all. Huge step down from Ghibli's creature design. The bosses are cool I guess?
The loot system is dreadful, if I'm getting a new sword for every other monster I kill why would I need any of these upgrade materials to upgrade my current sword? It doesn't make any sense. Not that it really matters anyway because the combat system is just mashing a button and hoping you don't get one shotted by an telegraphed attack. There is a dodge and a block button, but everything will either do chip damage or one shot you regardless (I was playing on Hard mode, which isn't actually that hard anyway).
I DO really like the Kingdom building aspect of the game though, it's really the only positive other than the soundtrack and art direction (and Ding Dong Dell) being the only real link between this and Wrath of the White Witch. Unfortunately it all becomes moot in the post game, because there is no actual post game content other than a Mementos / Tartarus style 40 floor dungeon. So you finally get your awesome fully maxed out Kingdom so you can, uh, look at it I guess? I thought it was done better in Atelier Meruru tbh, there it felt like everything was earned. This was more Mother Base style, wait for my free credits to come in while I idle on the throne and my programmed citizens do all the work for me.
Overall it's hard to really recommend, its alright. Maybe it's good. But it's not great, and it does not live up to the first game in any capacity.

Its hard to measure, Phantom Pain trailer got my hopes sky high but my expectations had already been shattered into a million pieces before I even got to touch it. I read a lot about it being too easy on launch difficuly and everyone was recommending the patched in Hard or Expert. Expert pretty much makes everything one shot you so I went for Hard mode, both up the drop rate as a trade off for being "harder" and as a result you end up never needing to buy or upgrade your gear but this means youre also heavily relying on RNG to get a drop that is actually worth equipping and you really need good gear or you will be getting one shotted anyway or doing chip damage. Combat was really disengaging IMO, not a fan of the system they went with, not sure if I would have enjoyed it better on vanilla.
It's an okay game, it's not great, its not bad but it definitely doesn't hold up to any of the other RPGs I've played over the past two years. It was a personal disappointment to me after the first game, glad you didn't have such a bad experience with it though. Maybe there is hope for Destor after all.

I never had to rely on rng for drops in order to survive. I was fine with whatever equipment I had at any time. Im wondering.....did you not engage the higgledy system much? Its not explained very well and I disnt get it for the longest time and ignored it....but good God if you learn what all those different moves they have do and choose the right team they can becime godly. Some of the combos they can unleash can pretty much single handedly destroy even the post game super bosses.
Sepholio
10-25-2018, 08:37 PM
For instance, get one higgledy that spawns the cannons, one that summons the knights, and 2 with the me too me too skill. Or sacrifice the cannons for a second one with the Knight summon. The summon happens and one of the others with me too auto copies it and summons a second super soldier. And those knights do massive damage. If You get 4 of them on the battlefield at one time you will be doing MASSIVE damage to anything.
Ultra Mantis
10-25-2018, 09:30 PM
Reliance is probably the wrong wording because the only battles I ever struggled with were some of the optional tainted monster quests and dreamer doors, it was more of an annoyance than a progression halter. The Borderlands comparison came from being constantly bombarded with shitty outdated gear for pretty much the whole game.
I used the higgledies a lot early game then end game but not much in between because most battles became trivial. Had the healing one, the gravity bomb guy and the special water / wind attack ones mainly. Ended up just running all four knights because they add more targets to the field and you spend less time healing / reviving your idiot friends.

That's what I'm talking about though. The Bloody Baron story is pretty small potatoes in the grand scheme of things, but it's a fantastic story. Even great games like Spider-Man and Horizon fall into that trap on a number of occasions. Witcher 3 never seemed to.

iirc ultemecia's difficulty depends on how much you handicap yourself in the final dungeon
Ultra Mantis

Yeah, if you are grinding you're only handicapping yourself, since your stats come from junction and not levelling. It makes monsters stronger, but not your characters.
Ultra Mantis
11-03-2018, 01:10 PM
I think there are junction skills you can learn that give you bonus stats upon levelling, but you definitely don't have them that early so it's counter productive to level without them. You're just lowering your growth cap.

Going to assume it was revealed in a prior game that the Wild Hunt are just some shitty elves in big armour because they just dropped that in there out of nowhere after calling them wraiths for the first half of the game.
The other thing that bothered me about the finale was the end of the war questline, specifically Dijkstra suddenly abandoning all of his smart guy puppet master routine and trying to kill a witcher and two veteran soldiers head on with the help of four shitty guards (and one good leg). Had no hesitation opposing him but he double crossed a double cross and THAT was his gambit. What?
My ending:
I was a great Dad so Ciri survived the white frost, told Emyrh that Ciri never talked about him because I figured that would hurt him the most, fuck that guy. Then gave her a fancy silver sword and she became a Witcher. I think this is the "good" ending, seemed very fitting to me.
Nilfgaard won the war, but Temeria was kind of free(?) and I guess Temeria is where all Geralt's buds are from so, good? At least Radovid got fucked up.
Baron survived and went to find a way to cure his wife. As a result Crow's Perch is now rape and pillage central, so I guess he was actually good for the place. That character is so many shades of grey it's brilliant.
Chose Yen over Triss, never really needed to give that one much thought. Seemed obvious from start to finish.
Cerys rules Skellige, another obvious choice to me. She was the best.
Disappoined Geralt had his banging limited, should have banged at least 6 more named characters. Let Geralt Bang.
No update on Priscilla, Dandelion doesn't even mention her now. How could you, Witcher 3?
Going to "plough" through the DLC now, great game.
Lambert, Lambert, what a prick.

Yeah that pairing was unexpected, I had previously thought Lambert was gay due to his personal quest. Oh well, she was the worst sorceress Geralt banged anyway, actually since Geralt already banged, Lambert is hopefully mad about it.

Dont make me choose between Gwent and Triple Triad :(
At least Gwent can be played in a standalone game. I would buy the hell out of a Triple Triad game from the XBL Store. Or on my phone. Or on my work computer...

Theres a fan made rom you can download...somewhere.
I dont know where to put this questions so i'll do it here.
I recently had to buy a replacement AV cable and AC Power adapter . I paid 8.99 on ebay. I havent tried it out yet, but the power adapter is 9V and I thought the original SNES power supply was 10v.
I have the very first model of SNES. Is 9V plenty enough or can this fuck my old system?

There is a good chance you could fuck it regardless of voltage. Go online and get yourself an original snes power adapter. They're not expensive or hard to find.

I went online and purchased the best available. The power adapter came from Retro-Bit.
If finding the original SNES gear was that easy and cheap, I would have done it in a heart beat.

Finished the main questline of the Blood & Wine DLC last night (I already did Heart of Stone) and apparently I got the bad ending... But I personally think it was the best ending.
Basically all three antagonists end up dead, and yes I am calling Anna Henrietta an antagonist because the massacre at Beauclair was entirely her fault. She definitely did not deserve a happy ending after blazing a path of destruction and wanting to execute everyone linked with the murders by circumstance but protected the one who actually ordered them. She even threatened me with treason for pointing out vampires are fucking immortal killing machines, but when presented with evidence that her sister wanted to murder her and she greets it with a hug (and dies like an idiot). Anna Henrietta deserved to die. Any ending where she doesn't answer for her tyrannical decisions cannot be considered good IMO.
Detlaff and Syanna were shitheads too. Read that in one ending Syanna dies at the ruins and you go to jail. That sounds worse. Worse still is the "good" ending where the sisters make up and all those murders are laughed off and swept under the rug. How dare you disgrace the good name of Ser Milton de Peyrac-Peyran like that.
Just going to tie up some loose ends (Skellige Gwent!) and then it's back to Persona 5.

My god Ubisoft needs to just end the Assassins' Creed series or they need to spend like 3-4 years working on the next one.
I'd figure they'd get some things right in Odyssey. Instead, it's worse.

You do "The Wasteland Survival Guide" side quest yet? I found (back when I originally played it) that I got the best results by doing all the optional parts and not using skill checks to answer her questions and also not telling her that the guide idea should be scrapped or that there was enough already when there was more to be done.

Secret of Mana And Dragon Quest Echos.
Secret of Mana remake has not impressed me yet. Probably wont complete the game.
I hate to admit this, but I never played Super Mario World. And I found my SNES and picked up some games and i'm playing Super Mario World and to be honest, It's not easy. Took me an hour to figure out how to get out of the first ghost house. I'm pretty sure when i was a kid, i got stuck at the first Ghost House and gave up and played NBA Jam and Mortal Kombat.

Secret of Mana was good for what it was but it was not the remake I was expecting. If all they were gonna do was update the graphics they could have done a bit more with it than they did. It was still a decent trip down memory lane though.
