Finished up the first mission and now I'm in the middle of exploring the Citadel. Controls for combat are giving me a rough time but I chalk that up to being used to other shooter setups. The way the conversations work is great and you can feel the effort they put into this universe.

And amp up the difficulty if you want a better (IMO) experience. Becomes too easy to wipe out mobs in fights when you get the mechanics down.

Adding difficulty will give them barriers, shields, etc. and FORCE you to coordinate skills and combos.

Had the most epic game of Battlefield V and don't think I will ever replicate it.

We were on Aerodome and it was Strategic Conquest (big vehicles, bigger maps, bigger all the things).

I played support and everyone but 1 other squadmate left the squad. We were in proximity to Objective C (dead-center of map, lotsa heated battles) and there was 1 squadmate in a tank, and another random tank.

Support in Battlefield traditionally leans towards restocking ammo and repairing vehicles. There are also support stations where vehicles can refill their ammo, and support is the fastest "building" class.

I kept both tanks repaired, kept rebuilding the supply station as it would get destroyed. Repelled a few attacks with errant bombs strapped to vehicles and lunged at us. It was ordered chaos and absolutely magnificent.

End of the game saw my squadmate with 39 kills - 0 deaths. I was 3rd or 4th (in score) with only 4 kills, but I played the fucking objective and role. No doubt the other team unquestionably thought the dude was hacking, but we just perfectly synergized.

Wish I would have been able to record the whole round, but I settled for the scoreboard screenshot at the end of the round.

Finished Horizon: Forbidden West last night.

Ugh. Can't believe Guerilla botched the ending. "Transcendence Johnny Depp" is the bad guy coming. They could have done something way better like make Hephaestus more powerful than Gaia or even have Ted Faro be alive and well. They botched that too.

They sorta put themselves into a corner because I don't know where they would go next. We reached the west coast. So, unless some future DLC is going to take us somewhere else (Pacific Northwest/Seattle or South to L.A, San Diego, Mexico). Perhaps Aloy works her way back East?

Didn't bother with the Strike board game or the races because I felt like they were shoehorned in because all other open world games have been or are going that route. Did what I had to for the trophies and walked away.

I kinda agree with Seph's assessment of a crafting system. It was a pain in the ass of hunting down the same machines over and over again for parts for my legendary armor and weapons.

Started Metroid Dread. Had to use a guide after the first boss. Basically locks you into a small section of the first area, forcing you to head to the second and then that area looks as if you are completely stuck as well and you have to realize there is one random hidden destructible wall in the first room that lets you go another way. Guess it was one of the few walls I didnt shoot because it looked the least likely to be a secret path. Ridiculous.

Reeks of that Castlevania II nonsense.CV2 gets a bad rap due to its localization. theres at least one npc that basically tells you how to solve each puzzle somewhere in the world...in the JPN version. there's a fan port that redoes the translation and it fixes how obtue the 1st outing felt.

its a real shame too. CV2 should be considered an absolute trail blazer of a game. day/night cycle. for an 8 bit game a genuine crack at an open world as could be done with tech. among the best OSTs of all time. there's a lot to be said about it. instead we talk about the cryptic puzzles that werent meant to be half of what they were.

Was there no way out through the door on the right that you remember? You definitely sequence broke like Fignuts said but most of the sequence breaks end up with alternative, albeit difficult, alternate routes out. I'd maybe bomb jump back up there (I know, timing is painful, it still is in Dread) and check out the other room again for a destructible block somewhere or another place you can bomb jump too to proceed.

Or hopefully you have a recent save like Fig said. What platform are you playing this on? If you are emulating you can always just edit your current save to refill your super missiles.

Y's IX down. If any of you play it, mainly RP because I know he also enjoys Y's, play it on one of the harder difficulty levels. They have scary names but trust me, normal/hard are wayyyyyy too easy. No one died in my party for the entire game and while I am good at these games, I in no way think I am just magically good enough at this game to explain never even fearing a KO. I only went below half health one time and that was due to not dodging an instant death move in time (tbf I didnt know it was an instant death move) and only survived because I was set up to take one fatal blow and survive per battle.

Otherwise the game as a pretty interesting story. Not cliche like most RPGs at this point. Gameplay is fun and it controls good and the exploration mechanics work nicely. You are gated from going to areas by story progress though so you can't just freely wander wherever you want from the start, though every chapter the area gets bigger and bigger. Soundtrack is standard fare for the jrpg genre. Nothing great but also not bad at all. Just way too easy lol.

In the end it's more Y's and I like Y's. The unique story helped this one a lot. Looking forward to the next one.

Say what you will about Call of Duty as a series, but they've easily got the best free to play game on the mobile market. Bioshock Infinite is probably my third favorite FPS ever made, behind Half Life 1 & 2, and Bioshock 1 is probably only behind those three and the two Portal games for me in the FPS genre. Assuming you don't count Fallout New Vegas and Fallout 3 as FPS. Though maybe Portal should be thought of as more a puzzle game than an FPS, in which case my top 5 fps would probably go:

1. Half Life
2. Half Life 2
3. Bioshock Infinite
4. Bioshock
5. Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare

Clan was ranked anywhere from #1 to #3 a few weeks ago and then the leadership I guess flaked off back to WoW. The algorithm somehow decided I'm it. Prob because my level is obscenely high and I have the highest shadow rank of anyone else atm, but still its weird because in terms of raw power I ain't it because I won't give them my money. Finished Octopath Traveler finally on my 2nd playthrough. My switch originally completely died right before I finished it (grinding between finishing all the characters stories and doing the true end game) the first time through so it was nice to finally get the real ending. Didn't like it as much the second time through honestly, the story and whole progression of the game just don't do it for me, but the battles and gameplay are still choice. Please give me new Chrono in this engine with these systems and a touch of refinement NAO.

Started playing Edge of Eternity. Enjoying it so far, but I'm barely into the game. Lots of potential for the battle system here. Seems like it will end up relying a lot on elements and statuses and it has a very basic movement grid where positioning can matter at times. Interested in seeing how it develops as the challenge increases and I get access to more abilities and characters. Think of it kinda like turn based tactics-lite w/atb and you'll have a good idea.

Graphics are pretty in a xenoblade way. Very similar looking in fact with some wild environments at times. Can def tell its made by a small team though because some of the animations get a little jank at time, especially in the distance. Sound is surprisingly great so far. Can't really tell you much about the story quality yet because I don't know much, but from the opening it seems like it may be fairly cliche. We'll see if some plot twists develop to set it apart.

Fired up Battlefield 2042 again for the first time since they dropped the first season. It ends in 4 days.

The shittiest thing is that without cross-play, it is nearly impossible to get into games with other people. Naturally, KBM will dominate controllers without even needing to try, doesn't make things very fun.

So I played bot rounds. The bots on harder difficulty are FUCKING INSANE. Can't remember the names of the difficulties, but going from "normal" to "medium/hard" is a HUGE difference.

Anyway, the reworked maps are actually excellent. There is more cover, it actually looks like a war zone, etc. Before, sight lines were so long, 85% of team comps were snipers.

The drip feed of reworking maps will not result in bringing back a decent player base at all. In addition, at the start of season 3, they are going back to the dedicated class system that makes Battlefield great. Specialists will still exist, but will be listed as a certain class, with gadget restrictions based on class. Finally. But that's the future. They are continuing to re-work maps, but at a slower pace.

The player base on console is nearly non-existent. At least there's bots I guess.

Witch queen is excellent. Both from a narrative standpoint, and the fact that theres none of the usal filler missions. Legendary difficulty adds more replay value to it as well. Hoping they add legendary versions of Shadowkeep and Beyond light as well. New smg exotic is loads of fun. Crafting is pretty cool. I mean I just started chapter 6 of XB2 and I'm approaching 130. Mind you a lot of that rn is downtime and mindless farming and working on affinities while running out merc mission timers. I am obscenely overpowered for the story at this point because of this. It is. I was running around with no aux cores and turrible accessories and didn't even notice just because of the raw power difference.

I just got done grinding Tiger! Tiger! for what must be the last 10-12 hrs of gameplay. There is only one rare drop out of stage 5 that I am missing (Double Attack 3 I believe, maybe 2, I dunno, the good one) and Poppi is now a monster. Especially Waifu Poppi. Man Torna: The Golden Country really refined the XC2 experience. They just about completely addressed every issue from the base game, but most importantly, the pacing. Love the whole game but this DLC is peak. And while I do miss having 3 blades engaged at a time, the way they changed the switching mechanic is so much better.

In terms of base game, I have beaten the story and other than a couple super bosses and completing affinity charts, I am pretty much done. Decided to break up the farming by jumping into Torna...which I am now just short of the final boss and farming super bosses here to try and get to the level 100 one before I finish the campaign and prepare to move on to XC3.

Sepholio
09-15-2022, 05:00 PM
In regards to how to good Torna is: Even though I love the XC series as is, if they decided to stop making the huge games every 5 years and instead more frequently release shorter but still complete experiences like Torna I would be all for it. Feel like they could actually use the format to tell a lot of stories within the overall universe to flesh it out. Like do one that leads up to the "final battle" before the world is destroyed and recreated prior to the current games. Show us how the whole situation came to be in the first place (assuming they don't do this in 3 because I dunno yet). You could even do more in the pre-torna time with XC2, like a scenario about Addams dad and uncle and Amalthus when he first awakens Malos and the war with Coeia starts. You never get to see that Titan so theres another new environment there until it gets obliterated in the opening of Torna.

Ripped XC3 from the switch to my PC and have set up a bunch of mods to make it run faster with more graphical flourishes. Can't wait to dig in tonight.

Btw, dunno if you have a beefy PC, but ripping your switch games to PC makes the vast majority of them so much better. I mainly do it so the kids can carry on with the switch and I can play my games without the fear of them wrecking/deleting them or having to fight with them over playtime.

Sepholio

Sepholio
09-16-2022, 09:21 PM
Its not entirely without issues on the very high end of titles, XC3 being about the peak of the switch pyramid rn. Makes emulating it more difficult because of random programming tricks the devs use to squeeze out every extra drop of power. I get some rare texture flickering in very small spots, things like that. But when I've changed the depth of field, upgraded the textures in general, have superior lighting enabled and its run smooth at 60fps in a much higher resolution, well...yeah Ill have my occasional graphical bug and be happy about it.

Sepholio
09-16-2022, 09:25 PM
I used to love the switch. That was before my 2 youngest both gold old enough to join the fray over it. I don't want no part of that lol. They can sus it out, I'll just the old busted switch (screen is borked) to run a hacked OS so I can rip my carts to the PC and play in peace lol.

Sepholio

lol getting rid of the item harvesting animations and all the field skill stuff (at least so far) is such a great QoL improvement that it alone makes this better than XC2.

Holy ballsack the world in XC3 is huge. Feel like I've covered as much ground as the original game and I'm just getting to the first settlement other than the one in the intro chapter. Kinda reminds me of XCXs world more than either of the 2 main line games, although from the scenery I have a really good idea of where I am in relation to earlier entries. Haven't even started the super bosses yet, although I could probably drop the first 2 at this point. I'm not even trying the 105/110 ones yet. I was hyped for it because of how much I love Xenogears but I found xenoblade to be pretty lame... similar to ff12 the battles were okay and locations/music were nice, but i found every party member to be insufferable. the premise of the story with the bionis/mechonis feud was cool but not executed well i dont think... still to this day want to vomit if i hear the word "the monado."

Also Xenoblade X was like 15 hours of really boring tutorials...never got past that

Would like to enjoy the series but was kinda turned off by my guys going ITS REYN TIME! and THIS IS THE POWER OF THE MONADO! every 5 seconds

Also been trying to play xenoSaga for years and have barely made it 10 hours into the first game... i always fall asleep

Simply put Xenogears da bess

It sounds like xeno may not be for you honestly. I played xbc1 after xbc2 when it dropped on the switch so its hard for me to say how id had taken it as a stand alone title. 2 hooked me not 1.

That said xenoblade 1-3 concludes the xenogears story in a very satisfying way:

what hooked me is the ending of xbc2. I liked 2 well enough. Combat was whatever. World was real cool. I liked the characters and the big ole anime tiddies were a huge plus. I enjoyed it. I didnt gush for it, but definitely enjoyed it.

When i got to the end i was blown away and slightly confused. It was a different game. i could tell it was, for the 1st time, calling back to xb1 but there was this other level that felt very familiar.

I went to Google, because the copies of xbc1 on the wii were outrageous, and read on the ending of xbc1. It was literally Klaus' story from xenogear continued. My mind was shattered. When xbc1 one dropped on the switch i played it and loved.

And xbc3 ties a bow on the whole xenosaga (see what i did there?) perfectly concluding this Klaus story in some really beautiful games.

Are Xeno gears, saga and blade all connected or is it kind of a final fantasy type of deal?

Destor

Written by the same guy who doesnt have the rights to the past entries. Saga hasnt been tied to blade yet but id imagine now that this arc is over it will in xbc4. Theyre connected unquestionably but youll play these 100+ hour games with zero connection and the last 5 hours will make no sense unless youve played the other games

I think Im gonna run through Origin tomorrow tbh. I've cleaned up all the quests I can find and only have 2 colonies left to max and know thats gonna be handled post game.

And yeah, I will for sure be back for the expansion but I'm going to wait to play the wave 3 content until it comes out so I can use that to get reacquainted with the mechanics before hitting the expansion. Unless of course it ends up being a standalone expansion again, in which case I'll prob hit wave 3 when they confirm that.

I imagine the expansion being about the cities founders

I know its a cultural thing, but I hated how everyone in the beginning treats you like dogshit because you had the absolute gall to prevent a woman from getting raped.

Yeeeeeeeah, that was a bit off-putting.

My kids were eating lunch, and as soon as I saw the jiggles, I knew where they were going. Thankfully, the 7 year old did not.

Sepholio
10-26-2022, 05:47 AM
I honestly didn't tinker with lifesage much, but from what I did it seemed fairly OP. I prefer the support healer classes more though (signifier and troubadour) but I know if I ever was to hit a battle where I was struggling that I'm calling in a lifesage or 2 to rectify that situation.

Between the class and Nias chain attack abilities its basically auto win.

Sepholio
10-26-2022, 09:39 AM
I dont think I ever used her chain attack ability tbh. Everything was already trivial anyways with the time I invested into the soul hacker class. So. Much. Damage.

Destor

She revives all fallen allies and they can participate in the chain attack. So heals are garunteed. Soul hacker is def legit once you get the high lvl skills

SMT5 seems extremely weird and I am totes mcgotes here for it.

Again I would like to praise the ease at which you can rip switch games to PC. SMT5 and XC are clearly held back by the switch. Its really noticeable in SMT5. The shadows and the jaggies made me go straight to ripping this one as well. Now instead of 720p/30fps I am playing in 4k/60 with upgraded textures/shadows and increased LOD. Also scaled back the ambient occlusion that made some things look...weird.

Honestly all of this is making me think about a steam deck so I can still kick back elsewhere and play but also get better settings.

About to be heading to Bayonetta 3. So the breakers is finally gonna get a break.

Also is the steam deck worth it. Been considering it even if only for Fire Pro.

Destor

I purchased the steam deck because i wanted to be able to play steam ttiles on my tv. For that alone i think its worth it. As far as the handheld devide its very well built and has all the functionality youd expect from what is essentially a gaming laptop. If you play exclusively on desktop there's no need for it but i love the device a lot.

@figgy I have the latest fire pro but i havent had time for it. Huge backlog atm.

@seph you should be fine with smt5 then. QOL alone make it the best in the series for my money though the super boss is more cheap than difficult.

fyi wait for a sale on fire pro dlc. They are definitely overpriced, but worth it if you can catch them on a discount.

Currently "engaged" in:

XenoGears
Secret of Mana with my friend
Final Fantasy 13 (already beat it and characters are maxed out, but I am trying to finish the last 2 hunts)
Super Mario Galaxy 2, only need a few more comet stars

Started but have not finished/played in a while:
Star Ocean: The Second Story (have been on the final boss for over a year)
Valkyrie Profile (stuck in some ridiculous fucking tower)
Pikmin
Shenmue
Super Mario 64
Earthbound Zero/Mother

Am going to play once I finally finish all these fucking games:
Rule of Rose
Final Fantasy 12 again
A bunch of stuff
Update on this post from 2010: I beat rule of rose 2 years ago on emulator after letting my friend sell my copy for 200$, and it's now up to about 600$. And i'm 50 hours into my 2nd playthrough of Final Fantasy 12 :y:

man i was at the store to get it as soon as they opened and these fucks dont have it out yet and wouldnt go get it from the back. Too busy standing around looking at their phones.

I wonder if they'll like it later when one of their bosses gets on their ass about it because they were behind schedule and refused to take 60 seconds of their time to help a customer that just so happens to be her husband lmao. I told her not to worry about it of course because it's not a big deal but shes the kind of person that will use it to go make a point lol

No clue how late to this dance I am, but Godfall.

God damn, how did I NOT hear about this game before now?? This shit is AMAZINGLY fun and I find it rather unique when trying to compare it to similar titles.

I get a lil bit of Destiny, Elden Ring and World of Warcraft//Diabloish vibes from it. The combat is so fucking fast and furious and GORGEOUS.

Only gripe thus far is the main characters voice is so LOUD compared to every other voice in the game. Seventh Sanctum nearly whispers in comparison.
