God damn Adrian Peterson.
Kris P Lettus
10-17-2010, 06:17 PM
No..
I'm not trying to diminish what Austin has done, I'm just saying that he reminds me of Lance Moore.. It's just that he is a "spotlight" reciever while Moore is a role player.. Do I think he should be higher on the depthchart than Colston, Meachum, and Henderson?? Maybe.. But I am not gonna question Sean Payton..
If Lance Moore was on ANY other team, he'd be top ten in stats every year..

Lance Moore is not in Miles Austin's league.
Miles Austin is not in Andre Johnson's league.
This is incredibly obvious. Why are any of you trying to argue differently?

No he's not. You might think so, and you're more than welcome to think that way, but your opinion is based on what jersey each player is wearing.
And you can try to argue that it's not based on your fan allegiances, but I wont' believe you.

Maybe because Roy Williams is shit and Dez Bryant is a rookie??
IC Champion
10-17-2010, 06:37 PM
Williams is tearing it up this year, and Witten and Crayton were on the team.
Kris P Lettus
10-17-2010, 06:38 PM
Witten is an awesome TE but he'll never have the numbers as a number 1 WR..
Crayton is a role player..
Supreme Olajuwon
10-17-2010, 06:39 PM
Ok Johnson is one, whos two and three?
I would take Andre Johnson, Larry Fitzgerald, Reggie Wayne, Brandon Marshall, Calvin Johnson, and probably Randy Moss over Austin. I'd put Austin in the next tier of receivers with Roddy White, Greg Jennings, etc.
Austin's very good. But he's not elite.
IC Champion
10-17-2010, 06:39 PM
Maybe because Roy Williams is shit and Dez Bryant is a rookie??
Also, wouldnt that make it harder on Austin? Couldnt you just focus the safetys on him, and double him?

No because y'all have other role players (like Crayton, Williams) at WR and an elite TE..

I'd feel worse for them if my team wasn't in the midst of a meltdown, I was expecting them to contend for a playoff spot with the Chargers no longer beign what they were.
FearedSanctity
10-17-2010, 07:34 PM
Can't believe the Broncos are only 2-4. They seem so much better than that.
They are. The problem is, aside from this game because I didn't see the first 3.5 quarters, they start slow because they insist on trying to run. The losses to the Colts and Ravens in particular can be blamed for this. I think both games combined total yardage for the first quarter would be something like 40-50 yards, with 60-70% of the plays called having been runs. Then throughout the rest of the game they insist on trying to get it to work instead of just throwing, which teams have had great difficulty stopping itself.
TL;DR Denver loses because they can't run but they keep trying anyway
Droford
10-17-2010, 07:42 PM
Ravens are 4-2..
Gotta think they'll win next week vs Buffalo..5-2 into the bye week with a winnable game vs Miami at home after. 6-2 through the first half is about as good as I expected. After that they have winnable game vs Atlanta on Thursday Night Football, and road games vs the Panthers and Bucs that should be wins easily, which puts them at 8-3/9-2 going into the tough part of their remaining schedule (pittsburgh SNF, @ Houston MNF, New Orleans). Im really hoping they flex that Saints Game to SNF (and dont say they wont because its 3 weeks of primetime games, Pittsburgh has 3 straight primetime games vs New Orleans/Cincy/New England)

I think we just saw the reinvention of the team that won 3 Superbowls inside of 4 years. Randy was nothing more than a deep threat that Brady was using as a crutch to draw double coverage so he could hit Wes Welker. If the random pass is incomplete it basically means you are punting on the set of downs.
The championship teams were all about short routes including screen passes that substituted for a real running game. Deion Branch seems to be fitting back into his old slot. Also winning by a field goal made me think back to all of those victories by Adam Vinateri game winning field goals.
The old pats were also about making great half time reads and coming back to dominate the last 30 minutes of the game. I know that it's only one game with Branch, but it felt like the Pats were finally back on track.
Tony Romo is horrible. If he gets any pressure, he shits himself. I honestly think Jeff Garcia is better then Tony Romo.

How in fucks name do you think you're going to beat the Chargers?
lollllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll. Love our defense so much. Bradford is going to be absolutely amazing in 2 years. Hell, he's pretty good already. Jackson looked good today too, really closed that game out with those runs in the end. Pretty excited about Rams football, feels phenomenal after the last 3 years.
I think Andre Johnson, Calvin Johnson, Reggie Wayne and Larry Fitzgerald are all better the Miles Austin.

http://cowboysblog.dallasnews.com/archives/2010/10/quite-a-16-game-run-for-miles.html
Over the last 16 games, Austin has 107 catches for 1,713 yards and 12 touchdowns. He had 76 catches for 1,239 yards and 10 touchdowns after being put into the starting lineup last year and through four games this year he has 31 catches for 474 yards and two touchdowns.
For comparison's sake, Austin's yardage total would be the fifth-best single-season total in NFL history. Only Jerry Rice (1,848 in 1995), Isaac Bruce (1,781 in 1995), Charley Hennigan (1,746 in 1961) and Marvin Harrison (1,722 in 2002) had more yards.
Of course, at his current pace in 2010, Austin would break Rice's single-season record for yards in a season with 1,896. He is on pace for 124 catches, which would be second-best in NFL history.
That's some elite company right there.
Shanahan already making a blunder by kicking off
Colts offensive line is terrible this year. I dont think they can go to the Superbowl as is. I wish they trade for one of those O linemen holding out or something.

Actually it's like 37% to more accurate.
Those numbers can be a bit deceiving though, since the Cowboys use alot of screen passes which are essentially runs.

He's hurt. There is no way Portis is the starter when he comes back though. Torrain is kicking too much ass right now to be benched.

I'm just sick of people saying that because of what he was never charged with doing, he's a worse quarterback than before.
Like I said earlier, before the Georgia incident, people DID put Ben in the Top 5. Suddenly noone would touch him and the whole suspension issue is complete and utter BS. Favre is gonna get nothing for "embarrassing the league" - you explain to me how that's fair.

I personally don't think he is a worse quarterback than before he was in trouble, but you don't get into situations like that, twice, by accident.
I would probably take him top five. I would take P. Manning, Brady, and Brees before him though. I dunno, I think he is a pretty good quarterback. Guy just wins games.

Ok, can someone confirm my beliefs in what I think is going on here please, it would be much appreciated.
What I have gathered is
- Coin flip determines kickoff, team who catchs it runs as far as possible towards the goal line (touchdown zone) when the player holding the ball is tackled play begins there.
- Players line up on the line of scrimmage and must be ten yards from each other, with 5 people on the line, 5 back and the QB
- The snapper snaps the ball back to a player behind (doesnt have to be QB, can be a hand off I think its called)
- Have to gain 10 yards within 4 downs to gain a new 1st down
- Can run the ball or pass the ball for the ten yards
- 11 players to a side
- Touchdown is 6 points, a tackle of player in touchdown zone is 2 points (safety) and after a touchdown they get a chance to
1) Kick a field goal (from how far out?) for 1 point
2) Make another TD (from 10 yards out I think) for 2 points? or is it 3?
If the positions could be defined as well, I would love that :)

IC Champion
10-19-2010, 02:31 PM
Cover 2 is a shell defense consisting of two safeties back deep each responsible for a half of the field.
Tampa 2 is zone defense, with the safties dropping back, like cover 2, but with the MLB droppin back and covering the middle of the field, with the rest of the coverage dropping back 8-10 yards from scrimmage.

If the positions could be defined as well, I would love that :)
1. Touchdown zone= Endzone. It's where you gotta go to get 6 points. After that you get a chance to kick an 18 yard field goal which is an extra point, you get 1 point for that. For a 2 point conversion, you get the ball at the two yard line and try to score another touchdown basically, you get 2 points if you get that.
2. Line of scrimmage is where the play starts, yes. There needs to be a minimum of 5 men on the line, yes, but you can also include a Tight End or two on the sides too. 5 men in the back does not happen, no. Teams can either have 1,2,3,4,5 receivers, depend on the formation they go in. Teams with potent passing attacks, like GB for example, often go into 5 spread formations (five receivers). Other teams that run, can have 5 men on the line, the QB, a fullback, and a running back lined up in a I formation, with 3 receivers. Remember, 11 on offense, 11 on defense. There is no rule that tells you how many men you should have in the backfield, but you usually won't see more than 3 (shot gun formation with dual running backs in there)
QB-Quarterback (guy the ball is snapped to )
HB/RB- Running Back (guy that gets handoffs from the QB)
WR- Wide Receiver (guys that catch the ball thrown to them from QB, although running backs get thrown to as well.)
TE- Tight End, they receive passes as well as get placed on the offensive line to block for the quarterback/running back to create time for the quarterback and create holes for the running backs to run through.
LG, LT, C, RG,RT= Left Guard, Left Tackle, Center (snaps the ball), Right Guard, Right tackle. All of these guys are on the offensive line and help protect the quarterback, or make holes for the running back.
Defensive tackles, Defensive Ends are on the defensive line, and try to get to the quarterback, or tackle the running backs, basically stop the opposing team's progress.
Linebackers line up behind the defensive line and are there to back up the defensive line. They are usually the hardest hitters in the game. LAURINAITIS BABYYY.
Cornerbacks cover the wide receivers and try to prevent completions from occuring, or they try to intercept the pass, which means they catch the ball from the quarterback and run the other way.
Safeties play deep in the defensive backfield usually, and are safety valves for any deep passes the quarterback might throw. They are there to help the cornerbacks with coverage, or they can blitz the quarterback. I dunno, it's tough to explain everything in football, I just gave you a basic rundown I believe.

The typical pro defensive set is a 4-3, or 3-4, with two safeties being on both the strong and weak sides of the offense. Rarely will you see five down defensive linemen unless in a short yardage or goal-line situation.

There needs to be a minimum of 5 men on the line, yes, but you can also include a Tight End or two on the sides too.
There needs to be 7 men on the line of scrimmage. The offensive tackles have to be "covered", either by a tight end or wide receiver.
What that means, Fallen Angel, is that you have your five offensive lineman. You have the center (the player who snaps the ball to the quarterback), two guards, one to each side of the center, and two offensive tackles, one to each side of the center. That is 5 men that will always be on the line of scrimmage. However, the two tackles, the outermost offensive line players, must be "covered" by another player to their outside shoulder. This could be a tight end or wide receiver. These players will line up at the line of scrimmage, on the line, to "cover" the tackle. Basically, the offensive tackle cannot be the farthest player to the outside in an offensive formation. There must be a tight end or wide receiver on each side that lines up on the line of scrimmage.
There can't be more than 7 players on the line either. For example, if two wide receivers line up on the right side of a formation, one of those players must be on the line of scrimmage, and the other will generally line up exactly 1 yard behind the line of scrimmage.

To further illustrate my point in my previous post, look at this picture. You have five offensive lineman. They are on the line of scrimmage. It may appear that the guards and tackles are slightly back from center, but that is allowed because they are going to be pass protecting.
On the left side of the formation, on the bottom of the picture, note how the middle receiver, of the three, is lined up on the 21 yard line, where as the other two receivers to that side are lined up on the 20 yard line. On the right side of the formation, the top side of the photo, the far most outside receiver is lined up on the 21 yard line, while the receiver in the "slot" is lined up on the 20 yard line.
If you look at this, you can see 7 men on the line of scrimmage. 5 offensive lineman, and the two receivers, one to each side of the formation.
I know this seems complicated, but it really isn't.
Gonzo
10-19-2010, 09:18 PM
Also, there are tons of variations for formations. You don't have to have a certain number of tight ends, wide receivers, or running backs on the field.

4 WR's, RB in motion out to the far left ( #33). No TE. It's classic Patriots football. They motion there RB out as a 5th receiver and spread the field.
too easy.
lol probably couldn't have picked a worse pic for a formation, empty backfield (no RB/FB's)
Not really. I mean he labeled them wrong, but it's obviously a motion of a RB coming out of the backfield and moving to far left as a receiver.
Patriots do that alot when there is 1 safety in coverage. If you show them a single safety look, Brady audibles the RB out to a WR spot and goes empty backfield.
