I think it's in the balance. Ronaldinho is probably the most talented player in the world, along with Zidane, but he does go missing for several games at a stretch, at times. Thing is, he could go out at Stamford Bridge, play to his best and he would destroy them.
Et'oo I am less impressed by. He's very tough for defenders to deal with. You might have seen him at the Nou Camp with your view, he pulls way out on to the wing and just zips inside. Defenders don't know what to do about it, he's so quick. Not a deadly finisher, though, in my opinion. Missed a golden opportunity near the end with the header.
Anyway, they get the credit, but I think Barca's strength lies in Xavi and the other midfielders. They are so good at keeping possession. You are right about Lampard having something to prove. In my opinion, any time I see him play good technical footballers who can keep possession, Lampard gets found out and the game passes him by.
Basically, it's in the balance. If Chelsea had Duff, Robben and Drogba, they'd easily be favourites, but with only Duff up there of those 3, I'm not too sure. Barca don't have to win at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea do. If Chelsea try to force it, Barca could pick them off.
Ronaldinho wasn't anything special yesterday, he didn't even produce any good tricks, and the way Robben and Duff run at defenders is much more threatening then the way Ronny did yesterday.
Lampard was inneffective yesterday, and Cole wasn't that much use either, Duff and Makelele were our only good midfielders.
I think it will be 2-1 at our gaff and we will do them in extra time or penalties, Jose knows the score. Trouble is I can see Gudjohnsen missing his penalty for sure, the useless tosser will just fuck everything up all match, I can well see Lampard getting brace.

Prutton getting sent off, being a disgrace by pushing the ref and swearing at the linesman, van Persie being a disgrace and stayng on, Pires getting injured, Cygan being useless as always and Arsenal scoring in like the 5th minute of a 3 minute stoppage time

Vieira has suffered too many injuries over the past couple of seasons. I think I posted in this very thread that Arsenal should have bitten Real's hand off when they offered £24 million for Paddy V, at his age and considering he has several recurring injuries.
It's the Roy Keane thing all over again. Vieira might have to adapt his game and become more of a holding player than the box-to-box man he has been.

"Rijkaard was in the referee's changing room with him for five minutes. I know because my assistants were at the door while the meeting was going on," Mourinho said in an interview with leading sports daily Marca on Saturday.
Rijkaard and Swedish referee Frisk have acknowledged they spoke to each other during the interval of Wednesday's game, which Barcelona won 2-1, but have denied meeting in the referee's room.

I saw the Chelsea fans cheering for Stevie G, that was pretty funny, in otherwise gutting day :(
Yeah I agree with you there Sid. It was frustrating really because all through the game we were making chances, but we just couldn't finish them, or couldn't quite find enough space. Before the game I always knew we'd win, but I gotta say that before Gerrard scored I really had changed my mind, Dudek played quality, he was your best player. None of our goals were good goals, and yeah after Riise scoring a goal like he did it was more worthy of a cup final win. Still, WOOOOOOOOOO. Also, Hyppie, Finnan and Kewell are cunts.

How come?
Kewell because of the way he reacted after pushing Gallas off the ball, and then the way he acted when Hyppia tripped up Cole. Hyppia for then having a go at the ref despite tripping up Cole and being on a yellow card already, he should have thanked the ref that he didn't take any further action. And Finnan after you equalised for us, when there was a little tussle when we got the free kick near the dugout.
Cactus Sid
02-28-2005, 10:06 AM
Kewell is always like that, so fair enough.
Did you see the TV replay of the "foul" on Cole? Joey did the old stick your leg into the defenders leg, Hyppia did nothing. Cole was lucky not to get a yellow for diving. As for Finnan, being a cunt for a little tussle? Something that happens in every single game up and down the country? Bit harsh don't you think.

My god, we're resting our world cup qualifying hopes on that lazy git. Get Kewell out of liverpool :nono:
No, its the way Finnan acted, otherwise I'd mention Didi Hamman and Carragher too, they were also getting involved in the tussle but I didn't mind that, its the way Finnan went about it.
And yeah I have seen the replay and I still think it was a free kick.
Cactus Sid
02-28-2005, 10:47 AM
Seriously, it was never a free kick, and even if it was, it wasn't yellow card worthy
Didi's foul on Frank Lampard before the own goal was genius, I guess the own goal was kinda deserved because it was so cynical
Anyway, as I say, ok, Finnan may have acted up, but players do it every week
But thats not the point, its the way he did it, and also, I was referring to when Lampard had the ball in the centre circle and was time wasting before taking the free kick after Makelele got stamped on, and Hamman ran in and barged into him and then a fight nearly erupted, but it didn't in the end. The ref was busy talking to Makelele and whoever fouled him.

I have never said that in my life, Dazz. That should provide you enough incentive to go and find it, to try and prove me categorically wrong.
Conveniently enough, I think it was in the big arsed football thread on the old boards which has now been deleted. As I recall I asked you if you'd ever supported anyone because I personally wouldn't follow football if I had never supported a team, and then you said about the United thing.
El Capitano Gatisto
02-28-2005, 01:25 PM
Well, Dazz, you're quite right that I said I did used to support United when I was a small lad. Mainly because all my mates did, and any family members who liked football (my extended family are all mostly Gaelic football people) supported them also.
It didn't take much imagination.
The reason I stopped wasn't really like a conscious thing, but because as I got older and started to learn more about the game and understand it, I realised I enjoyed seeing Manchester United lose and everybody cry about it more than seeing them win.
It is for this reason also that despite going to a Catholic school with a bunch of Nationalist and Republican kids who nearly all loved Celtic, that I actually enjoy seeing Celtic lose as well.
I was quite an arguementative young lad, so taking up a position opposite from the prevailing view (i.e. against Man U and Celtic supporters) was more important to me than any pretend loyalty to a club.
I'm sure that isn't the reason you said before that you stopped supporting them. Shame the old thread has gone, I had some good arguements with you and Rob Harvey :(.

Watched the cup final and taped the rugby.
Chelsea deserved the win really, but Liverpool had good chances through Gerrard and the Biscan headers, also Makelele pulling Gerrard down in the box was quite reckless, could've given a penalty for that.
I missed the Carling Cup final because I was at Lansdowne Road watching the lads beat England.
Wooden spoon.
You got a bit lucky with the decisions on the disallowed tries, but Ireland are ranked higher than England anyway, so expectation wasn't high. We'll beat Scotland and Italy, that i'm certain of.
Joe Cole is a diving cunt. Even Chelsea fans are getting embarrassed by him now. Hopefully he'll be at Spartak Moscow or Kidderminster next season. As much as I wanted Chelsea to lose yesterday, it would have been a crime if Liverpool got a win after that performance. Mourinho was funny though in a cunt sort of way. First of many Steven Gerrard goals for Chelsea though.

I'll give you one try, the beautiful kick out to the winger. That should have stood.
However, we were the better side and deserved it overall. Defended brilliantly. It should have been wrapped up well before the end, but O'Gara couldn't kick for shit yesterday. Missed a decent penalty and two easy drop goals. Even one of those after the try would have killed the game off.

Yeah i can't deny you deserved it, Corry's try probably shouldn't have stood cause O'Gara was being blocked off. O'Driscoll's try was superb too, glad we've got Murphy at Leicester, great hands in that move.
Back to football ( :$), Inter suffered their first defeat in any competition this season yesterday, and it had to come against AC Milan :(
Inter have had about 72 draws though so it's not as an impressive record as it seems.

Man U, Liverpool, Celtic and Rangers, or a combination, are by far the most common.
I remember watching the game 2 or 3 years ago where Arsenal went to Old Trafford and won the Premiership there in our student's union. It was ALL United fans, except for two of my mates who support Arsenal.

I'd give him 10 games for the tackles, anyway. They were both shitty, dirty leg-break attempts that could have kept players out for a lot more than ten games.
Viewed in that light, he shouldn't even have been mouthing off in the first place considering how chickenshit both challenges were.
Any Cardiff fans around Dazz?
Nope, which was odd, because at the end of October I went to see a mate at Cardiff uni, and I wanted to know the football scores when I got to the train station, and I asked if he knew the football scores and he just replied with 'City won' and I thought it was odd that he didn't ask what scores I wanted to know. Later on I saw many ore Cardiff fans in their shirts as I went to the uni, United lost to Portsmouth that day

I wouldn't say Prutton is a dirty player by any stretch though. 10 game ban was definately too harsh. He only got 1 for red card which means 9 for pushing the ref. That's bollocks. Maybe 4 at the most for the "pushes". Jesus, my missus pushes me harder just to wake me up in the mornings!
Well, the referee is meant to be treated with respect and stuff, it's the principal of what he did.
I doubt your missus (or anyone) treats you with respect ;).
Nah 10 games is right. He pushed the ref that has to be clamped down on hard. Di Canio got 11 iirc. Prutton was being a twat anyway. Its not even like he was fucked over he well deserved to go.
Wengerland
03-03-2005, 06:43 AM
Yep, Di Canio's was 11 games, 3 for the red and 8 for the push. Prutton's wasn't as bad but the way he was looking towards the assistant it would have been interesting to see what Prutton would have done to him. Agree with ECG about Alcock's reaction, there was maybe enough force to push him back, but not really knock him over.
Leicester have signed a young Irish defender, Patrick McCarthy, from Man City. Don't know much about him but he hasn't played in their first team, which is a concern, but Sunderland did something similiar with Stephen Elliot and he's done well for them. Also set to sign Kenton on loan, not really needed but he should be alright for this league.
Well, the referee is meant to be treated with respect and stuff, it's the principal of what he did.

Yeah they were bad tackles. Not debating that. What I am debating is that he got two yellows for the tackles so that's a 1 game ban. That means he got 9 games for "pushing" the ref which I think is too harsh. Personally, I think what Jaap Stam and the rest did to the ref at Old Trafford a few years ago was worse.

the referee (D'Urso?) shouldn't have backed off like he did, he should've stood his ground, told them to fuck off and booked them if they didn't. They only kept moving closer to him because he kept backing off, D'Urso should've taken control of the situation.
Prutton was pushing into the ref to try and get to the linesman after he had already been sent off. Its not really 9 games for the shove, its for the shove, the use of foul and abusive language and the failure to leave the pitch quickly after being sent off. Think of it like 2 matches for failing to leave the pitch, 2 for the language and 5 for shoving the official.

how will that work then, what happens if man u play palace & it ends in a draw? (man u will prob be in europe, dont think palace will so used as example) does it get settled there and then i.e on penacks?
but what happens if say stoke and mk dons were to play each other in 5th round/ qtr final and that ended in a draw, would they go to a replay as they arnt involved in europe, if so how is that fair? :?:

Don't know the ins and outs, but Stoke and MK Dons would replay it in your example. The Palace/Man U game would be settled on the night with extra time/penalties.
It's probably because of what happened with the 4th round replays this season, because there were internationals on the wednesday they couldn't be played in midweek and so the games (West Ham vs Sheff Utd is the only one i can think of) was played at the weekend, and that meant them missing a league fixture. If they want to get the league finished a week earlier then i don't think the teams in Europe could get a replay in, or something like that.

Yeah Wengerlands right, any team in Europe has enough fixtures as it is so it's settled on the night. Any team outside of Europ can play in midweek, obviously not when theres internationals but I guess the FA will not play the F.A cup ties around the times of internationals.

The teams in Europe already get a bye into the 3rd round of the League Cup so I don't see it being that big of a deal

UEFA Cup over FA Cup.
Glad to see our FA has it's priorities right again.
England has to look good in Europe, like when the F.A let United not enter the F.A cup to represent England in the World Club Championships. The better we do in Europe the more places we get and the better reputation we get in Europe.
Unbelievable really. He was looking a real threat as well. Glad George McCartney kept his cool, although he probably couldn't believe what Akinbyi as doing.
It's funny really. He took the elbow smash, turned around, took a headbutt the the bridge of his nose and then was choked and he STILL didn't go down :D My kind of player!
Where's Akinbyi's 10 game ban? He was far worse than David Prutton but I guess it's more acceptable to assault another player (because there wasn't a single attempt at a tackle) than it is to nudge a ref.
FA Cup is a friggin' joke. Between the teams still in the Champions League, there are only about 8 or 9 England regulars. Helps every other country with players in those teams just as much. Erikkson is such a tool. I hope he gets a club job in Spain or Italy next season just so I don't see his mug on TV or in the papers every week.

thats kinda the point i was trying to get to, most of our top teams are filled with people from abroad so why move the FA cup final, it'll only aid and rest the other countries players aswell so we wont be getting any real advantage.
i always like watching the cup final as it was the climax to a season!
out of cuorisity when does the spanish season finish as owen, beckham and erm woodgate (yeh world cups over a year away so he has an outside chance of being fit) must be key players for us (well owen at least)

Hmm, interesting, Silvestre keeps his arms down, ball hits arm....nothing.
Paulo Ferreira jumps up to head the ball, ball hits hand....penalty, yellow card, 3-1.
Giggs just hit post, should've squared it, Ronaldo was clear.

There's no way that wasn't a penalty, Ferreria jumped towards the ball with his hand up and then turned away at the last second. Stonewall.

Precisely....which is why Silvestre's handball should've been given, it prevented the ball from going into the box.
