Can't say I'm too surprised, but Flip Saunders got fired as the Pistons coach. I kinda saw this coming since Pistons went to the finals in 04 and 05. But when Flip came in 06, they haven't been back since. I didn't mind him as a coach, but when a team is at the top and he couldn't keep them there, something is wrong.

Flip Saunders is to the NBA as Marty Schottenheimer is to the NFL. They can kick some serious ass in the regular season, but somehow seem to fail during the playoffs.
Flip only had a year left. Maybe if Dumars went and found a big name, Detroit could go back to the finals.
Coaches getting fired left and right. Does Phoenix and Dallas still need a coach? I think Chicago is hiring Collins or already did. I haven't heard anything lately.

Detriot suffers from lack of motivation, and their one big man doesn't show up half the time. Saunders shouldn't have been fired. He'll go somewhere else and win I'm sure.

Jackson wants this one bad, and he wants it in Boston so he can light a cigar in the Garden like Red used to.
He and Red never liked each other, Red made some comments a few years back how Jackson doesn't stick with a team when they get bad and try and rebuild, how he was just picking and choosing a team that would win and make more money, where Red turned down a lot of money from the Knicks to stay with Boston.
Also in fairness the "player coach" championships were as much Red as they were Rusell or Heinson.

I'm not looking forward to ABC's glamorized, bush league style coverage of the NBA finals.
We need the NBA on NBC back...

There are rumors of D-wade going to Chicago for the no. 1 draft pick and some other players. So D-Wade plus Beasley or Rose unless the Heat can get both draft picks and have Rose and Beasley on the same team. That'd be interested if any of it is true. Also the finals are starting tomorrow!

I think they'll do ight tonite, they've beaten some of the best teams at home on the road these playoffs (ie. Utah & San Antonio), they just have to be able to contain KG and pierce which is no easy task mind you, but if Pau can actually be aggressive, Odom and fisher consistent and Kobe simply being kobe, i think we can take this one.

Kareem was always a bitch.
I'm really pumped for this. The only thing that would be better is if KG dunked on someone and then screamed and flexxed and then got speared by Bob Sanders at mid court.

How did Pau Gasol help turn the Lakers around in the regular season, when we were already the best team in the west?!?

WHEN GASOL WAS GIVEN TO THE LAKERS. KWAME WAS PLAYING, BECAUSE BYNUM WAS INJURED. THE GASOL ALLOWED THE LAKERS STAY ON TOP.
SERIOUSLY.

As heartbroken as I am right now, I have hope for game 2. The Lakers simply missed shots down the stretch, 5-23 or something, come on now. We could have had this game, that's what hurts the most about this. Garnett was a monster, as usual. It's frustrating right now, but here's hoping to winning game 2. Kobe really let me down in the 4th, completely non-existant. Big ups to Fisher.
EXACTLY MY FUCKING POINT.

SERIOUSLY.
Key words STAY ON TOP. The douche on TV said that Gasol helped the Lakers turn it around. Turn what around?? That was my point.
I see Phil making the proper adjustments for game 2. The Lakers couldn't get a shot down at all in the 4th, that's probably not gonna happen again in game 2. I'm still optimistic.

The Lakers were like 3rd or 4th in the West when they got Gasol. When Bynum went down no one thought they would compete in the playoffs let alone get to the finals. Then low and behold Lakers are given Gasol, and everyone picks them to win the Championship for this year and the next 5 years.
Isn't that turning it around?
Even if the Lakers were 1st in the standing... Can you truly be on top when Kwame Brown was your starting Center for those games after Byum was injured?

that all said, great game. Did LA miss some shots? sure, but so did Boston.
I tell ya, when Pierce was down at first it was like no big deal, they bumped knees, then when he grabed his knee... fuck... the guy trying to block the camera and michelle tafoye chasing them were funny.
The rebound dunk by Garnett near the end was sick.
can't wait for game 2, this whole series will be a dog fight... the NBA is thrilled, TV is thrilled and Basketball fans are thrillllllllllllled!

Fuckin Celts baby. Peirce is the real star. I mean, Allen is wet and KG is a monster. But I really think the focus, if there has to be a focus, should be on Pierce vs Kobe. That's the Magic/Bird logically if they must create one. It's about 2 team leaders who've been there the whole way.
Nothing away from KG, I've been ecstatic ever since getting him.

Granted theres a lot of basketball left to play. You should have believed me about how good the celtics are, and how good their D is. It's all about depth. I don't doubt Kobe could play better, but a lot is the pressure of our D on him. He's not gonna run all over the Celtics D. It's not about stopping him, thats impossible, but they can contain him extremely effectively.
Also, the Celtics didn't play their best. Honestly, they played as bad as they will. This team is fucking good. I've watched nearly every game of theirs. They're being severely underestimated, and they can and will play better.
Jeritron
06-06-2008, 05:39 PM
lol at people thinking the Peirce injury was some kind of work. Anyone who knew anything about basketball and/or Peirce they would know theres no way he would want to be out of the game for a moment longer than he had to. He walked out there on a sprain and played on it. It was a precaution.
Unless he had to it never would have happened. The dude's like Cal Ripken.
Only the supporters/media of the team who lost would say something like that
Jeritron
06-06-2008, 05:42 PM
Not that it matters, because he came out and dropped two 3s that pretty much meant the end of the game.
I think the LA fans just didn't like it because they got excited about the prospect of playing a lessened Celtics and then had their hopes shattered
It would be a good idea though. If your team needs that big push, faking an injury and then coming back like you are on top of the world would turn things around/in your favor.

Nah, Lakers got this shit tonight, you gotta have faith Sammy.
I'm almost afraid IC if you don't pick LA for Sunday night it's going the jinx Boston...
Rivers has been outcoached at almost every turn in the playoffs.
Which has been true 100% (ok, maybe not against Detroit), except game 1... how the fuck did Doc out coach Phil Jackson, and I'm not saying that because the Celtics won, that doesn't always mean out coached, but the rotations on Kobe, the use of Cassell then pulling him out when needed... Phil putting Kobe on the bench in a key situation for a few mins...
If Boston wins the title are you going to cry Sammy?
in fairness, he's a die-hard Lakers fan, win or lose he wil probably cry... but wearing your heart for your team on your sleve is nothing to be laughed at about.
I think in 1985 I cried when the Pats lost to the Bears... of course I was like 9 or 10...
I completely think that that injury was exaggerated ridiculously.
That is by far the dumbest thing you have ever said.
Yeah, I don't think he FAKED the injury, but like Sammy said, it was way EXAGGERATED. He came out hopping up and down FFS.
join the club.
Has either of you ever twisted a knee? It's a sharp pain and you don't know if it's a sprain or a blown ACL at that point, you have your adreneline going masking some of it and a sharp pain in your knee area and it hurts to move it or not move it... now take that and your a pro-athlete, who has never had a serious knee injury and felt that type of pain (Pierce has never had a major knee injury) your in the championship series and besides this pain, flashing through your head is it's all over... As said before, Pierce never would have left the floor if he thought he'd be fine.
Interesting note, he's refusing an MRI. "Either I can play on it or I can't, what the damage is or isn't makes no difference at this point". Hope he doesn't find out after the series he did permanent damage... but my guess is it was just a spain and he'll be good.
that's because phil jackson is the best coach in history.

Are you simple VEL? I didn't say Jackson outcoached Rivers, though Rivers is an idiot. If you had any intelligence at all, you would know that I said that before the game. I mean, I know you like to look like you know what you doing, and saying but come on.
Using Cassell, lol. Rivers got lucky that cassell made a couple shots, which seems like alot considering how badly Cassell sucks in these playoffs. It was game one, with Boston at home, they should have won.
And when Kobe went to the bench, Lakers actually got closer, and you know, he needed a rest. I suppose you would have played him for 48.
Now VEL like everything else in life, you know little about the sport of basketball. You don't really know what a foul is, or a carry. Your just some retard from Boston or somewhere in the North East who hopped on the bandwagon this year. You just watch the game and hope that Boston scores the most points.
Maybe you've forgotton the first two rounds in the eastern conference, but I have't.
I just find it hard to think that a team who beat Denver, Utah, and Spurs, relatively easily in the first 3 rounds, to lose to a team who had to fight and strggle it's way through the easiest playoff scheduale.

a wins a win.
I admit, I fell asleep when they were up over 20, so I missed the melt down, and that does concern me that they took their foot off the gas,
The refs did suck, they weren't letting the teams "play", I didn't like the first 2 calls on Kobe, the 3rd call was good when he tried to run through a pick. Then the play he complained about the replay showed he didn't get touched.
I don't think you'll see a lopsided game foul calls in LA in LA's favor.
As someone pointed out here, except Kobe, no one on LA drives to the basket and if you don't drive you're not going to get the calls.
Look at all the calls the Celtics got, they were driving to the hoop.
I will say "Paul Gasoft" didn't play that way last night, he was actually agressive and drove to the hoop, for LA to have a shot at taking all 3 in LA he has to keep doing that.
The Lakers are a Finese Offense and that type of team will always have trouble against a physical defense.
I do find it funny (in LA's defense) that when they run through teams they're a "high powered offense" and then when they don't win they're a "soft team". They are what they are a finese offense that relies on jump shots and fast ball movement to find the open player. No argument it got them this far, but if they want to beat Boston and they want to get foul calls they MUST start driving to the basket.

The drama begins...
Ex-referee Tim Donaghy blows whistle on NBA dirty secrets
By JOHN MARZULLI
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER
Tuesday, June 10th 2008, 4:10 PM
Tim Donaghy, who pleaded guilty to charges of betting on games he officiated, is now airing NBA's dirty laundry. Murphy/Getty
Ex-NBA referee Tim Donaghy told the feds two refs fixed the outcome of one playoff series - and that officials were told not to eject star players from games for fear of hurting ticket sales.
The bombshell allegations are contained in a court document filed Tuesday by Donaghy's lawyer. It describes the “inner workings" of the NBA in which top league executives used referees to manipulate games.
Donaghy, who pleaded guilty in Brooklyn Federal Court to charges of betting on games he officiated, told FBI agents “league officials would tell referees that they should withhold calling technical fouls on certain star players because doing so hurt ticket sales and television ratings," the document said.
Donaghy claims he was told that two refs who were “company men” acting in the interest of the NBA conspired to extend a playoff series in 2002 to a seventh game.
The referees allegedly ignored flagrant fouls committed by the team that needed to win. They also reportedly called "made-up fouls" against the other team which led to the ejection of two of their players. The team favored by the refs won that night and the next game to win the series.
The document does not name the teams. The Nets were in that playoff series, losing the championship finals to the Los Angeles Lakers.
Donaghy also claimed a supervising referee told refs that an unidentified NBA executive did not want them to call technical fouls on star players or boot them from the game.
Donaghy told feds the league reprimanded a referee who disobeyed that edict in January 2000 and ejected an unnamed star player from a game in the first quarter.
Lawyer John Lauro filed the four-page letter to Federal Judge Carol Amon because none of the information was included in the government’s letter to the judge seeking leniency for Donaghy when he is sentenced next month.
Lauro has gone to war against Brooklyn federal prosecutors for offering plea deals to Donaghy's betting accomplices that give them less time than the disgraced ref, despite his extensive cooperation.
Donaghy claims referees have accepted autographs, free merchandise and meals from team coaches and managers. He told probers one referee used a team's practice facility to exercise and another played tennis with an NBA coach.
"These activities were against NBA rules, indeed, such inappropriate relationships could influence the outcome of games," Lauro wrote.
Lauro said he withheld the names of the teams, referees and league officials because the feds may still investigate the allegations.

1) I like how you point out THE ONLY TWO road wins the Celts got this year, ignoring the fact that they lost every road game to the HAWKS and the 1 man gang Cavaliers...so yeah, they CANT win for shit on the road...which leads to to....
2) For all intents and purpose, the Lakers shouldnt have won tonight. They played like shit, it just so happens, as stated earlier, the Celts cant seem to do it on the road. Sure, if the Lakers hit free throws, or if Gasol didnt look scared as shit everytime he touched the ball, theyd have a commanding lead the whole game, but there is no doubt the Celts choked on the road...again.
3) The Celtics will contend, yes, but lets be real...with Bynum in the Lakers lineup, do you think this would be the series it is? C'mon, Perkins would get fould out and Bynum would put up 20-10 consistently, leaving Gasol and Odom available to kill. Lets say the Lakers DONT make it to the championship, no chance in hell the Celts would get passed the Spurs, or hell, the SUNS for that matter...both those teams have a bench to rival their starters.

Well, I am glad we won, but I didn't see that dominant performance I expected in game 3, in a MUST win game. Lamar Odom was fucking atrocious, and don't even get me started on Pau. Fucking vag. Sasha was tremendous, I love the machine, and Mamba was Mamba. I am happy about the win, but we are gonna have to play way better if we wanna win games 4 and 5 in LA.
Oh and in case anyone is interested, free throw attempts...
LAL- 34
BOS- 22

We got a lot of questionable calls tonight, I will admit that. I'm still not too thrilled about this. a W is a W, but we need to play better.

fucking paul pierce was straight pissing me off tonight. couldn't do shit and needed to stop trying. fuck even garnett wasn't doing shit besides rebounding. it seemed like they were afraid to take it to the hole.

KG is a monster, couldnt believe he was so bad tonight. Same with Pierce. Allen was amazing, though. Just like Powe stepped up in game 2, Sasha stepped it up for us tonight at home. Bench players always play best on their home court.
And FA, none is on the floor, as I wasn't too happy with the way we played. Lamar and Pau were awful. Same with Luke, but he is always awful.

Would you rather them be down 3-0? Even if they played bad?

lol yeah Sasha is the man. Wears a girls headband too, that a Lakers girl gave him. He used to be so bad up to this year, like someone lit a fire up his ass this year or something. He is "The Machine" for a reason.
And no FA, I am pleased with the win.

If you get punked out by Zaza Pachulia. You are a bitch.
I like the fact that he took 21 shots. Shows that he might be learning to man up when it counts. MAYBE.

A superstar of his Caliber should be able to take over a game, and not shoot 20 foot fadeways that clank off the rim.

i'm not going to disagree with that, and i have already stated my displeasure with his performance tonight. but it happens. that doesn't negate the fact that he is a superstar of that caliber. and certainly doesn't make him a bitch.

It's not just tonight though. He has been like that his whole career.
The bigger moment the smaller KG is. He's afraid.

Shitty ass game but oh well, didn't think there was gonna be a sweep or anything anyway. Really wish Game 5 was in Boston though, especially if the Lakers win game 4
