Since this seems to be the general discussion thread, Is a playthrough of Fallout 3 needed before New Vegas to understand the story.

I agree with Ultra. I love both of those games, great replay value in both of them.

A playthrough of Fallout 1 and 2 would actually help you appreciate Fallout NV more than Fallout 3.

Some really cool cameos and easter eggs.

I have heard good things, just lack motivation since I don't like playing through like 30 hours of time I deleted accidentally on my last save.

Bought those games, and I'm having a bad time trying to make the graphics on it stable. This was during the Steam Summer Sale, so a lot of other games got played instead.

I had them on 360, Fallout 3 played flawlessly, but New Vegas had a glitch on it to where it would lock up at the Strip loading screen. I think they patched it eventually. I don't remember.

I think my PS3 died. My brother must have been playing Killzone last night and something must have happened. Manual says it overheated so I got a fan blowing on it. But after checking some websites, it's looking like my 60gb launch PS3 finally kicked it.

So much for finishing up Final Fantasy 10.

I've been reluctant to get it because people told me its pretty much the same exact game/storyline as Red Dead Redemption.

I mean, I loved RDR, but don't want to play through the same thing again.

It’s not very much like RDR at all. RDR is set in the “wild west” in like 1912. L.A. Noire is set in 1940’s Los Angeles. Both games do feature newspapers, but the ones in L.A. Noire count towards your trophies/achievements for the game (you have to find and “read” all 13, and unlike in RDR, when you read a paper in L.A. Noire, you can go “behind the headline” to see how other events in the game are happening at the same time, just behind the scenes, and eventually (no spoilers here) the storylines converge at the end.

The only other similarity L.A. Noire and R.D.R. have in common are bounties (R.D.R.) and responding to dispatch calls (L.A. Noire). Again, unlike R.D.R., finishing 1, 20, and all 40 of the dispatch calls can net you trophies/achievements for the 1st you do, then at the halfway point and again when you have done them all.

All said, Pintint, I think you’d be doing yourself a HUGE favor if you just give L.A. Noire a chance, and if you like extra content for your games, by all means, splurge for The Complete Edition (if you can find it anywhere that is...good luck with that!)

I was trying to play Diablo 3 which I bought at launch but haven't played much because I got bored with it and didnt like it as much as Diablo 2, but 15 minutes after starting it up, I got "connection dropped", erasing the 15 minutes of progress.

Come on Blizzard.

If you can't keep your servers functioning (especially months after launch), don't make the game require online play for single player.
Interest in game lost again.

Was hoping on finishing up Halo 1 as part of a mini-break from Saints Row 2 but found out today that's going to be impossible since the game keeps crashing before the start of the Guilty Spark mission/chapter.

Took a break from Saints Row 2 because of the final mission being a lot more frustrating than it should be.

Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare

Nice atmosphere, it's good to have more to do in the frontier, and I like the new mounts.

However, the combat is a bit disappointing in that the zombies are never really a threat, even in great numbers. They're easily dispatched, slow, and don't inflict much damage.
I also have a feeling that running around between towns to keep saving them is going to become a tedious chore pretty quickly.

I'm only about 2 1/2 hours in, so there's still room to grow, and while I don't think it compares to the main game, it's still pretty fun.

Yup. Non lethal takedowns using the choke or sleep darts. Can't leave bodies out in the open either. Not sure if you can just leave them in the shadows, or if you have to put them in a dumpster. I'm on a non-lethal run now as well. Much tougher, but if you are creative, you can work around it.

It does get better once you get further into it, I found it the same the way, you can ignore the towns indefinitely I think but its a good way to stock up on ammo.

Pretty good. Was very fun in the beginning. The game looked sharp and overall the voice actors nailed their parts. The story seemed rushed in the 3rd act. Rehashing antagonists from the 1st/2nd movie works fine for a video game but it would have been awful for a 3rd movie which makes me seriously doubt this was considered for the plot for the 3rd movie. It got boring near the end but I'm not a HUGE GB fan so maybe it wasn't for most. Multiplayer was fine. I only played maybe a half hour of it. But it's fine for arena-based whatnot. Good stuff. Interesting concept but in the end it didn't feel too much different from any other beat em up type. I wish the stealth sections were a little smoother and a bit brighter. Got repetitive pretty quick to the point where I just swinged on past enemies to the next checkpoint. Solid voiceovers, for the most part.

Yet another I game I hardly played. I played enough of it to know that I shouldn't be playing it. I tried a quick race on normal to see if the disc works and I had a hell of a time controlling the car. When I tried playing again later, same thing happened so I fiddled around with the "sensitivity" and "dead zone" settings but cars still handled like tugboats. I tried paying on easy but then the car would brake for you no matter what and I wasn't having any of that.

It looks pretty good at least. A lot of (locked) cars and tracks to choose from. I tried the very first mission in campaign to unlock stuff, spun out 3 times and figured that's enough for me.

Things might be different with a race wheel but who knows. I don't have these problems with Forza or Gran Turismo.

Gameplay and graphics remind me alot of Star Wars X-Wing sim and Crimson Skies style type of missions.. Finished it yes I know it's short but still, the gameplay is decent.

In the mean time, I've ordered Dishonored Special Edition, and I have WWE '13 sitting on a shelf waiting to be played as a prize once I finish my essays for this semester.

It has a pretty good story on my opinion . Worthy of even being considered canon. And really, that's what made me keep playing because everything else about this game isn't great.

The combat system is weird and could have used more defensive elements to it. Most of the time you pick your best offensive ability over and over with not a lot of strategy to it other than go for the archers first. The only battles that were tough were with Valarr.

Sound isn't great. The two main character's VO's are decent and Varys and Cersi are ok. Everything else is bad. Not even great music. They don't even have the full intro of the song playing in the beginning.

It doesn't look good either. Looks like it could be on the PS2 or maybe the vita.

But overall, a pretty bad game and the only reason I kept going was to see was because the writing is what saved it.

*EDIT*

And you know what, fuck it I'm done with Soul Calibur V too. Couldn't get into like I did with IV. I tried a couple of times but just couldn't do it.

How long is the DLC? Worth reinstalling DNF for?

I took it slow and it took me around 5-6 hours, give or take. For me the humor was the selling point, especially one scene where Duke get's shrunk down and has to escape in a talking barbie car, it went a bit Toy Story but then went right back to tits and one-liners. If you can get the DLC cheap I'd say it's a good Sunday afternoon type game.

I bought Forza Horizon on Black Friday for like $15, still kind of raced out from Forza 3 but I figured it was a pretty good deal for that price. I can't tale it seriously though. Tha main character looks like a dark haired Paul Walker and I keep expecting the next Fast & Furious movie to break out at any time.

<font color="#ccffcc"> Games I have played this year

GTA IV - 91 - Upon replay, Instead of powering through the story I took time to sort of "live" in Liberty City. Really added to the game.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - 97 - Still my only complaint is so little variety of monsters that pose a threat.

Crackdown - 80 - Fun to dick around in

Bioshock - 95 - Love this game so much, going to replay it soon and then start Bioshock 2.

Dark Souls - NA - Haven't played enough to rate, don't hate myself enough to play atm.

Red Dead Redemption - 96 - Replaying due to a fan theory I have, will post upon completion.

Played Mario Party 9 mostly for a nephew who loves Mario but is too young to actually play games yet. He enjoyed it and all the changes done pretty much make it a lot faster to go through each board,

SNK got pretty lazy with Metal Slug 7 since its as short as other games in the series but has no multiplayer nor takes advantage of the extra screen like Contra 4 did.

Finished beating this classic game remake Karateka. Used to play it on Apple computer looong ago.. Now the remake looks like Mulan Disney style anime. Yeah yeah, most of you think this is shit because of the graphics update but the gameplay is good. Kinda like Tyson's punch out rhythm type of fighting. Listen to the music so that you can attack at the right time.. That's about it..

Another one that was very easy to beat. Well, the single player was. Multi player had some legs to it but got very repetitive quickly and I found myself bored most of the time. Mostly because you had to unlock a lot to remain competitive with the field and if someone has already unlocked certain mods they'll be difficult to beat or take down. Some shameless rubberbanding in this game too. The map is a bitch to look at and needed to be zoomed out to work efficiently. Went to my custom soundtrack after about 40 mins too. I was looking forward to this but overall, it was disappointing.

More watching than action in that first one. Doesn't take away from the greatness of it though.

During the XBLA New Years countdown, amongst all the other things I downloaded, I finally picked up "Dust: An Elysian Tale", or as I see it: "Castlevania: Sym-Furrie of the Night". Obviously MetroidVania. Not as expansive as something like Shadow Complex, but still a damn good game from top to bottom. Fairly simple to 100% achievements without some dumb-ass ones relying on luck or multiplayer functions to get. Lots of self-aware humor and cameos. I even liked the "love letter" to Simon's Quest thrown in.

Story was kinda cliche, but that's okay. Everything doesn't have to have a friggin Shyamalanian twist ending or a branching path of what is ultimately a black and white path of morality. It starts, it's fun, it ends.

Guess I'd better actually put time into Hitman: Absolution now.

The only flaw I'm having with MGS is that I can't see the codec frequency on my version (*ARGH, matey*) so finding Meryl's was so fucking time-consuming. Really diggin' the game so far, course those cigarettes aren't doin shit for the cargo lasers.

I got tricked by GameCrazy into buying Xenosaga a few years back, couldn't stand that game. It was just boring as hell to me

The cigs work, but they suck-ass in range (you have to damn near trip them for the smoke to pass by, and even then it has to just so happen to pass by while you're exhaling) as well as being driven slowly insane by that annoying ass "health drain" beep while you're smoking them. You're better just finding the infrared goggles first.

"Hey, Snake, there are lazers there!"
"OKAY! I guess I'll use these cigarettes I hid in my STOMACH! AWESOME!!!"

1st Mass Effect on PC... My complaints: playing other characters like sentinel, vanguard, etc.. you cannot have that zoom in ability in all of your weapons.. Restarted the game as a soldier and I can zoom in with all weapons too.. The targeting system is a bit shitty awkward despite yes, I know, Mass Effect started out like this but it improved in the sequels afterwards. Still, the game's no different to the awesomeness of its brethren.

The 1st Normandy ship before being destroyed by Collectors had no capt. cabin or a locker room to custom your armor.. And for some reason, I preferred the Cerberus Normandy... But still, the original had its moments with the crew. The elevator only gets you to the engineering and shuttle bay. That's it..

You’ve beaten the original Borderlands just this year? Or did you mean 2?

Also, no offense, just curious: How can you not have played Oblivion or Fallout 3? Oblivion’s been out since ’06 and Fallout 3 since ’08? Finally, just a word of advice about Oblivion: If you don't already have a bought copy, go for the GoTY edition...Knights of the Nine I found to be slightly underwhelming but solid, but Shivering Isles is a must-play DLC experience.

Borderlands 1. I never was really interested in it, but I bought it last summer just for the coop but my brother and I never got around to playing it so I just went ahead and finished it to get it out of the way.

I bought the GOTY editions of Fallout and Oblivion. Bought them both a year or two ago but kept putting games ahead of them. Actually I preordered Fallout for the PS3 back when it came out. I even got the goofy lunchbox and bobblehead deal, but I never played more than an hour or two of it but Josh (my brother) beat it. Then when my brother moved he took the PS3 with him so I just traded Fallout in. But I had the desire to play it again so I bought it and Oblivion since everyone was raving about it as Skyrim was being hyped up. But they have both sat on my shelf pretty much unplayed for a couple of years as I put other games ahead of them in my list. I may have an hour or two into Oblivion, I'm out of the dungeon and looking for the kid I think. Fallout, I'm almost out of the Vault.

As much as I longed for Arkham City I've had it since the Christmas after it came out and I've never done anything more than d/l the Catwoman DLC. Josh beat it after tiring of waiting for me to play it.

I've had Mass Effect 1 and 2 and have never played them, and I was about to trade them in today since I never play them. I'm having second thoughts though.

I guess I just don't play that often, most of these were beaten in spurts of boredom since they were fairly short, so they just sit there collecting dust.

Cool story. I hope you enjoy both Oblivion and Fallout 3, although with the Fallout 3 add-ons, I’d say start with Point Lookout first as it is by far the best of the 5. Save Mothership Zeta for last as it is extremely underwhelming, as is Operation: Anchorage. The Pitt is pretty awesome, except for the part where you have to Collect 10 steel ingots to advance the story, and Broken Steel while it raises your level cap a bit is pretty “MEH”.

I'm not even sure why I bought it to be honest, because I didn't really like AC 2 and I hated Brotherhood. Like you're saying I guess I just wanted to see how the stories ended.

I'm hoping that the big reason I disliked Brotherhood and even 2 was because I played the first 3 back to back with nothing to break up the monotony and ended up getting all of the achievements in 1 & 2.

Revelations isn't a terrible AC game, it was just boring for me. In Brotherhood I knew why I was running around Rome, in Revelations I just kinda like, why should I care about Constantinople. I think Revelations would've worked better as DLC, in my opinion anyhow.

I agree with that. I've been debating on whether or not to even worry with 3. I watched my brother play a few minutes early into the game, and I liked the idea of running through the forest and such as opposed to the same old buildings from the last few games, but it didn't scream play me. Revelations at least wraps up Altair and Ezio to draw me in, 3 I may get around too eventually but nothing about it stands out to much to me just seems like more of the same.

Games I've Beaten in 2013:

Max Payne 3 - 80

Fun stuff, very Max Payneish and wasn't really looking for anything too much else. It seems like there was just enough bad guys to shoot before parts of the game became too repetitive. It is a bit preposterous the amount of bad guys Max Payne kills but oh well. Multiplayer seemed fine but I didn't play all that much of it. The only thing that was frustrating was when it would come out of a cutscene and it put me out of cover for whatever reason or equipped me with a gun with no bullets and I would die instantly. Other than that though it was very Max Payneish and I enjoyed it.

whiteyford

Yeah part of the reason I didn't pick it up was because I hadn't seen the film at the time. It's hilarious how you can swing anywhere even if there's nothing to swing on really, although the swinging around is great.

Drakul
01-22-2013, 11:49 AM
People complained abut the swinging being doable anywhere and not "realistic" but the guys that made the game said they tried doing it realistically but it wasn't as fun.
I've got no problem with the swinging the way it is.

I got the Stan Lee DLC with my game. It's fun to swing as Stan Lee but that's all it is. There is one single mission for Stan Lee and then you're left to your own devices. I never got the other DLC but it sounds more my style.

whiteyford
01-22-2013, 12:08 PM
A guy with super powers is realistic but the swinging isn't? It's true though, having to swing around Central park etc would just get annoying.

Haven't even looked at the DLC, think I'm only at chapter 5, just defeated Vermin, but playing as Stan Lee can't go wrong.

A guy with super powers is realistic but the swinging isn't?

I've had a similar argument with a friend of mine about costumes in superhero films. We're expected to believe a human has super powers but they don't think we'd believe the person would wear a colourful costume. So everyone gets crammed into black or dark blue leather onesies.

I can imagine the movie pitching meeting.
"So, this guy can walk on water, time travel and shoot fireballs from his eyes? Yeah, the public will buy that. This red and green outfit and cape? Totally unrealistic. Give him a black leather outfit and bulletproof vest and you've got yourself a movie!"

If you want EZmode for the future, you can jump off the ledge after you kill Death but before you walk up the stairs to Dracula. Full health / item use, boomerang with triple throw and of course full morning star upgrade :)

The Boomerang x3 is the real winner there.

Games I've beaten in 2013:

New Super Mario Bros. Wii
Super Castlevania IV

I started both of those in 2012 though. New Super Mario Bros was fun except for the fact that we kept getting in each other's way, so, annoying. Also a little lenient with retries and stuff. Castlevania was ridiculous. I was flipping out at the last boss and had to try on three separate days to beat it and kept dying but then today I started from there and beat it on the first try and it was kind of anti-climactic.

I dunno part of the fun of nsmbw was the hilarity that ensued from getting in each others way. Especially when we started to purposely fuck each other over.

Bioshock Duology series... I think the message of this game is how to be a real father to those little sister kids that were influenced by violent adult egomaniac underwater Atlantis-ish dictator type of dad... Other than that, I got both good endings on this one.. I just couldn't bear harvesting little girls like that.. I've seen enough children being killed or mistreated in games. Great game.. And the Infinite sequel says it might not be the same storyline as these 2.

Older games are harder than games today. Today we can beat a game in just a few hours where as before we could play some games for weeks and still not beat it. One game I've never beaten to this day was the dos game The Dark Heart of Uukrul.

My brother bought Nightshade for the NES shortly after we got the system and we never could beat it. I found game genie codes for it a last year, because people apparently make their own now, and we still could not beat it because one of the early bosses glitch you into a never ending loop of knocking you down so you can't get up and pushing you against the wall so you just stay down.

We decided it's impossible to beat that game.

The first couple were told in more of an Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged kind of vein. I’ve heard Ken Levine might just leave it open to players’ own interpretations as to whether or not there’s any link between BioShock Infinite’s world and those of BioShock & Bioshock 2

Depends on what you mean by “older”...are you talking about as recently as the PS2/XBOX/GCN gen consoles or farther back than that? Because if you’re talking PS1 and before I would say, yes, definitely.:yes::yes:

Also, am stoked to play through BioShock Infinite normally after picking it up and then giving 1999 Mode, which will, according to Irrational Games’ Ken Levine, be much more than just a tougher difficulty to try to get through the game on...apparently had some inspiration from spiritual predecessor System Shock 2 which maybe coincidentally, maybe not (thinking the latter) released in 1999.

Yes, older. As in the NES days

It is pretty tough, till you get the level patterns down. 6-2 was the game defining stage IMO. I could get through the game to that point in 1 life. There is a god damn eagle that infinitely respawns at one of the last jumps, but you have to time it JUST right, or it hits you and sends you plunging to your death. Outside of that, 6-3 is a walk and then it is on to the 3 boss fights, with the 2nd one (Jaquio) being the toughest.

LOVE the damn series. NG II was MUCH easier and III was the first one I beat.

Yes, games of yesteryear are mostly based on Arcade games which involved timing, coordination and skills to beat. They were made that hard to keep you pumping quarters into the machines. Also now that we have saves all you really need to be a video game now is time.

Actually, all three of them are pretty fucking hard. They can give you all the fire wheels, ninja clones, and god swords they want, but it's all about the precise platform jumping while dealing with perpetual enemies with the worst possible spawn points.

Games I've Beaten in 2013:

Max Payne 3 - 80
Driver: San Francisco - 77
Shift 2 Unleashed - Holy Shit I Don't Care
Dead Space 2 - 77

This was A LOT better than the first one.

For starters, I played on casual to try and get through it as quick as possible. I know you're not supposed to and to play and normal or harder is the recommended setting but I didn't have time for all that. I also played I'd say about 70% of the game with my speakers on and in a darkish environment. Even under those settings, there were still plenty of "scary" moments and if I cranked up the difficulty a little would have probably been tougher to get through also. I didn't feel like a "space janitor" in this one either, I felt like I had a purpose and was actually working toward something. It probably helped from Issac being able to talk. The visuals were A LOT better too than in the first. Just about everything was improved. Didn't try multiplayer, don't really care.

Working On: Blops 2, The Walking Dead, inFamous 2, God of War 3, God of War: Origins, Medal of Honor: Warfighter, Halo 4, Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, Assassin's Creed: Revelations, Assassin's Creed 3, Deus Ex, XCOM: Enemy Unknown, Spelunky, Dear Esther, Trine 2, Super Meat Boy, Metal Gear Solid Collection, maybe Portal 2 co-op

I've been rocking Skate 3 alot.. I love this series and think it is super underrated..

I played a crap ton of the first Skate it first came out. Then I got hooked on COD and skipped over 2 and 3. Finally played both of them last year and 3 is amazing. The improvements from 2-3 compared to 1-2 makes the 2nd one seem like a shitty dlc game. That and the fact that you can actually buy the entire map from 1 and 2 as DLC for 3 makes 3 the winner, no contest.

Problem is, there really isn't anywhere to go from there. They made such a great game there's really nothing to improve on. There's already a crapton of tricks in it and if they added any more it would probably feel awkward trying to do them since most of the configurations are taken.

Gutsman is either love it or hate it it seems. I personally like his stage. It forces you to slow down and think more strategically.

The wily stages are the best part of the first game. If you've enjoyed the game so far, you'll really like the next part.

So I finished Dishonored about a couple of weeks ago must say it was rather enjoyable yet challenging enough if you wanted to play the stealth route and have no casualties. There was a big swerve in the game that I saw coming a mile away but it didn't ruin the experience and the conclusion was okay so i'd give it at least an 4/5 rating. Right now I am playing Transformers: Fall of Cybertron the multiplayer is great and the campaign isn't too shabby either wish I had picked up it's predecessor (WOC) when it came out now.

What annoys me the most is trying to fight an enemy by swinging from a precise direction but the game thinks you're trying to do the opposite or something.

For example, there will be an enemy that holds his swords in a way that means you must attack him horizontally left to right. So, I move my Wii remote from the centre position left, so I can make the swing but the game things I'm trying to swing my sword from centre to left This means I just collide with his swords, so I have to move the controller slowly so the game wont misread it.

Saying that, though, combat is cool any other time and beating bosses is actually really satisfying. I do actually feel more involved in the combat with Skywards Swords controls for the sword and your sheild. If it was tweaked a little bit more when it came to knowing when I did and didn't want to swing, it'd be perfect.

Playing through some of the Dragonborn DLC for Skyrim right now, pretty addicting. I like the cool “I don’t think we’re in Skyrim anymore” ambience of the areas like Raven Rock and Tel Mithryn...haven’t really done a whole lot; am working on figuring out this puzzle in The Final Descent quest where you help the old guy find out what happened to like, his grandpa or somebody.

Also just finished Big Game Hunt in Borderlands 2...why the fuck is the main story so damned short?! That’s alright though, been going through and killing all the “________ the Invincible” after-story DLC bosses. Cleared them all so far except goddamned Terramorphous. And that’s WITH The Bee shield (finally got it as a legendary loot drop as my mission reward for “This Just In”) and all my weapons dealing massive damage and being all purple - orange rated...I have come infuriatingly close though.
