How expensive are Phillies games?

Tigers games are nice, whenever we go it's always a cheap affair. Tunnel Bus from dt Windsor to right outside the park is $8 roundtrip, we typically get SRO tickets for ~$15, and drink at a bar a couple blocks from the park. All said and done the afternoon costs about $40 with a decent amount of drinking.

Parking near Nats stadium is like $20 at best. :'(

Metro is probably cheaper, but such a mess I hate to take it. Last time I tried, one of the other trains derailed and held everything up. Only been to one Nats game this year, supposed to go to one more at the end of next month to see Miami via free tix from work. Was supposed to go to the Pittsburgh games a week and a half ago but gave the seats up because I rescheduled my vacation for that week.

Had really good seats at all 3 Dbacks games I went to this year via luck.

1st game we were upstairs and one of the customer service ladies asked if we would mind moving downstairs for free to accommodate someone else, last 2 games I went to we were right behind the plate because we won 2 free pairs of tickets at Fan Fest.

So pretty sweet.

Figure if I'm going watch them lose I might as well be drunk and able to heckle them for being down 3-0 to a team that's almost twenty games under .500.

Fucking infuriating that I started watching them as they are screwing their post season chances ala Toronto Professional Sports.

Is this what its like for Leafs fans every year? Ive only begun watching the Jays and I'm beyond frustrated watching. Can't imagine having watched all season.

O's are 7 up on the Yankees with 32 games to go. O's can play .500 ball and finish 91-71. The Yankees would have to go 23-9 to tie the O's if they play .500, and for fun and giggles the Blue Jays would have to go 25-5.

Edit O's are actually on pace to win 94 games though. .500 would be a bit of a letdown

According to MiLB.com, Montero was coaching first base when Baccala yelled at him to hustle off the field at the conclusion of the inning. A game official said the scout then ordered an ice cream sandwich and had it sent to Montero in the dugout.

Montero -- who made news for reporting to spring training 40 pounds overweight this season -- did not appreciate the gesture. He approached the stands with a baseball bat, screaming profanities, and threw the ice cream sandwich at Baccala. Montero had to be restrained by the team's pitching coach, according to the game's official scorer.

I've seen people complain of Porter's firing since he was given nothing to work with. Clearly, the front office set a very clear expectation to lose for some years while they stock their system. Porter was probably canned due not following a more advance statistics based approach to managing, in game decision making, and/or not being on board with an advanced metrics heavy team.

Orioles are 2 gb of the Angels for the best record in baseball. But since the All Star Break they have a .5 game lead in record. Also, while you definitely think offense for the Orioles (68 homers #1 in baseball since the ASB vs the Angels 28 homers) their staff ERA is 5th in the American league at 2.99 which is only slightly worse than the Angels 2.88 ERA which is 4th.

Also in regards to Home Runs, its ridiculous that the Orioles have 182 home runs which is the most in baseball and the #2 team (Rockies) only have 160. They've hit 94 more homers than the Royals who are last with 88.

Diamondbacks Fire Kevin Towers
By Steve Adams [September 5, 2014 at 1:56am CDT]
The Diamondbacks have fired general manager Kevin Towers, sources tell Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic.

Towers, who has been in the GM’s chair for Arizona since succeeding interim GM Jerry Dipoto (now GM of the Angels) back in 2010. His job security has been questioned over the course of the season given the Diamondbacks’ dismal performance, which figures to result in their third consecutive season without a playoff appearance.

Earlier this season, the Diamondbacks hired Tony La Russa to serve as the club’s Chief Baseball Officer — a position that was created in order to analyze the club’s decision-making process. That move prompted many to speculate that Towers’ days with the organization could be numbered, which does appear to be the case, as Piecoro hears that an official announcement on the move will be coming tomorrow morning.

Towers becomes the second NL West GM to be dismissed during the 2014 campaign, as Padres GM Josh Byrnes was let go earlier in the summer. Few of the moves that Towers has made in recent seasons have panned out well. This past offseason, he dealt center fielder Adam Eaton and left-hander Tyler Skaggs in order to acquire Mark Trumbo from the Angels — a move that he felt was necessary to address a lack of power from the team’s corner outfielders. However, the move came just a season after Arizona dealt Justin Upton (and Chris Johnson) to the Braves in exchange for what most believed at the time to be an underwhelming package of Martin Prado, Randall Delgado, Brandon Drury and Zeke Spruill. The Trumbo acquisition, however, was just one attempt at bringing a power-hitting corner bat to the organization, as Towers also inked Cody Ross to a three-year, $26MM pact that has produced little to no gain for the organization.

Prado was signed to a four-year, $40MM extension before playing so much as a game with the D’Backs, but that contract looked questionable at best just 18 months later when he was dealt to the Yankees in exchange for power-hitting prospect Peter O’Brien. The team also received little in exchange for right-hander Ian Kennedy — left-handed reliever Joe Thatcher, relief prospect Matt Stites and competitive balance (Round B) draft pick — and then watched Kennedy go on to have a strong rebound in his first full season with San Diego.

Towers’ trade of Trevor Bauer in a three-team deal that netted Didi Gregorius — a light-hitting but defensively gifted shortstop — was also the source of scrutiny. The D’Backs seemed dissatisfied with Bauer’s behavior, and he wasn’t the only player whose demeanor didn’t sit well with management. The Diamondbacks reportedly allowed players’ laid back personalities to fuel multiple transactions, including the aforementioned trade of Upton.

Ultimately, while Towers’ tenure had its bright spots — the five-year, $32MM extension signed by Paul Goldschmidt looks tremendous for the D’Backs at this point — his run as GM appeared to consist of more moves that served as steps backward than moves that provided a foundation for on-field success.

---

Probably should have fired him before he destroyed their roster instead of after.

MLB unofficially tweaked the new home plate collision rule recently. Umps now can be slower when making the call and runners can be out if the catcher doesn't blatantly cause a collision to occur.

However, ESPN obtained a copy of Torre's memorandum, which firmly instructs umpires not to call a runner safe, even if the catcher has blocked the plate without the ball, if there is no evidence that the catcher has "hindered or impeded" the runner's path to home plate.

The new guidelines, which were arrived at following several weeks of talks between MLB and the Players Association, will take effect immediately. The late-season agreement is timed in the hope of keeping postseason controversy surround the rule to a minimum.

Primarily, the clarification was to send a reminder to umpires that while the intent of the rule was to protect catchers from violent home-plate collisions, the wording was not intended to be interpreted so strictly that it would allow runners to be called safe on a technicality if the throw had beaten them to the plate by a substantial margin.

Didn't see this discussed easier, but jesus fuck what a homer bitch the Miami announcer is. Mike Fiers clearly looked upset after hitting Stanton, obviously unintentional. But then when he hit Reed Johnson the Marlins started chirping at him and only then did Fiers get pissed off. Apparently if you hit a batter by mistake, you're no longer allowed to pitch in to anybody else. The Marlins emptied out of the dugout and screamed at Fiers when both hit batters were clear accidents.

The Marlins DID have a valid case for being mad at the ump as he called both hit batters swings and misses...but the announcer for the Marlins was like "the Marlins are doing the right thing, you HAVE to stand up for your star player!", "how is Fiers allowed to stay in the game? this is all his fault!", "oh the umpire is now warning both sides, whoopdee doo." and he was incredulous when the Marlins pitcher then got ejected for clearly hitting a Brewer on purpose.

It was the type of announcer homerism that would make Hawk Harrelson cum in his pants.

Pretty sure this is how every announcer is that represents a specific team. Was listening to the Steelers radio, via online, and they went ape shit for anything called against the Steelers. Plus, he, and the Marlins, did just see their NL MVP candidate go down to a horrible pitch. Of course tensions will be high and that goes for the announcer who is calling 200000 games a year for the team.

Not sure how I feel about the likely potential ALDS between the Os and Tigers. On one hand the O's were 1-5 vs the tigers this year but all 6 games were played by may 14th. Since the beginning of July the o's have been playing .687 ball vs the Tigers hovering around .540.

people will probably automatically give the Tigers the edge based on pitching despite the fact that the O's era is almost half a run lower (3.50 vs 3.99) and since July 1st the Os have allowed 210 runs which is the 2nd fewest in baseball to the Mariners 195.

After losing 3 of 4 to the Nats, the Mets are finally done. I knew they realistically had too many teams to jump over for the 2nd Wild Card anyway, but that they were only 5.5 out midway through last week just shows that you really don't have to be super good to stay in the race with 2 Wild Cards.

The Mets are 69-65 this season against every team not named the Washington Nationals.

When you add the Nats games in the Mets drop all the way to 72-78. Seriously ridiculous how much they've owned them. If they could have figured out a way to play even halfway decently against the Nationals, they'd be right in the Wild Card hunt right now.

Jacob deGrom struck out the first 8 batters he faced last night, and 13 overall. Sadly the bullpen couldn't hold the lead for him.

Still, I think he almost has to win Rookie of the Year at this point. Billy Hamilton has received more hype and steals a ton of bases, but he's subpar as a hitter. The only way deGrom doesn't win it at this point is if the voters decided he simply hasn't logged enough innings.

Evil Vito

134.1 over 21 starts. He'll have one more start later this week before they shut him down. He had a brief stint on the DL in early August, but it didn't cost him much as they were just going to shut him down earlier in September due to innings limits. His only shot at qualifying would have been if they called him up earlier than they did.

Anyway, he won't have enough innings to qualify being in rankings. But if he did his ERA (2.68) would be 6th lowest in the NL and he also has an impressive 1.13 WHIP and 3.35 K/BB ratio. Some calculations put him above Hamilton in the WAR rankings, but then again WAR for pitchers is a bit wonky.

I think he definitely deserves it but won't be outraged if he doesn't due to the innings.

Angels, O's, A's, Royals, Mariners, etc. all in contention and none have been to the World Series in a long time (or at all in Seattle's case). The Tigers are the only AL team in contention that's been there recently, and I wouldn't mind that as I genuinely would like to see Detroit win something plus that rotation would be hella fun to watch in the playoffs.

Biggest surprise was how the trades for both the Tigers and A's didn't really provide the big boosts the experts were expecting.

A's hitting declined badly with the loss of Cespedes while the Tigers hit a really bad slump and for a while lead to them handing the division away to KC.

It's not surprising. This good finish to the year for the Mets (close to .500 and could finish in 2nd place) was always going to save this regime. Regardless I never thought Sandy was in much danger. His years of rebuilding the farm are starting to pay off as the Mets are loaded with pitching. They have 6 Major League starters right now with Harvey returning, plus Syndergaard, Montero, Matz, etc. all close. I'd bet at least one of Gee, Niese, or Colon are traded this offseason as none of them strike me as bullpen guys.

The hitting is still worrying because Sandy has zero money to spend this offseason. Wright and Granderson will take up 40% of next year's payroll, so they both need to bounce back in a big way. Murph was great this year but with only one year of team control left it wouldn't surprise me if he got dealt (possibly combined with a pitcher) in exchange for a left fielder.

Collins...mehhhhhhhhhhh. The team seems to like him and play hard for him but he tends to have a hard-on for veteran players especially early in the year. Plus he's 65, tough to picture him leading the Mets into the next decade or anything. I'd love Wally Backman but it's clear the Mets will never hire him as a big league manager.

Who the fuck cares? KC was still in the top percentage of winning records for the AL. But lets cramp on their style because you want to go back 80 years to the good old days.

Honestly, why do you feel the need to cramp a feel good story? How does that benefit you at all?

Tigers Cardinals and A's have to lose

As an o's fan I'm rooting for Tigers/Royals 163 since it means the winner would have to burn a starting pitcher that would otherwise likely get 2 starts unless they don't start a top pitcher. Plus they won't get the extra rest or prep time for game 1 on Thursday.

Here’s hoping Detroit finally takes it all, but getting past Baltimore in the A.L.D.S. could take all 5 games, seeing how good they were in the regular season.

I know, I know...this is the post-season now and nothing in the regular season matters anymore, but if the Tigers and O’s regular seasons were any indication at all of how their A.L.D.S. encounter might turn out, I’m worried for Detroit.

it'll actually be @ 3 pm if the Pirates win the wild card. its noon if the giants win because the NLDS game with the Nationals can't start at noon east with a west coast team since that would start at 9am out there.

Sunday is a 3:45 start in Detroit definite, which is perfect because the Ravens game will be just about over.
