Sox recently added more pitching depth after signing a deal with Mexican League pitcher Hector Velazquez
Red Sox have purchased contract of 28-year-old right-hander Hector Velazquez, who had 2.47 ERA and 120 strikeouts in 131.1 innings last year for Monclova in Mexican League. The deal is pending a physical.

It rarely works out to the two best teams record wise actually getting into the World Series due to the overall randomness of the playoffs - but the Cubs and Red Sox really do seem to be in a tier of their own ahead of some other really good teams.

Like the decision since outside of rare occasions, the end result is always the same. Might as well let pitchers save those 4 pitches for later or more important situations. MLB doesn't really save that much time overall but pitchers get to save a bit of their arm for games.
Think it might have been Busty Olney recently who said the amount of times that play gets contested every season is tiny. Like around 4 times or so where it gets botched or doesn't result in an auto-walk.

I always saw those 4 pitches as part of the "exchange"...... you want to intentionally walk the guy, fine, but you will be "using up" 4 pitches that you could have used "later" or "more important situations"........

5 straight winning seasons after 14 straight losing seasons is the fucking literal definition of a turn around. Hell from 2007 to 2011 they never won more than 69 games and from 2012 to 2016 they've never won fewer than 81.

The Orioles won 3 more games in 14 when they won the AL East than the a blue Jays team that won it in 15. Also just in the past 5 years the Orioles have a better record (424 wins vs 415) than the Jays and made the playoffs 3 times vs the Jays 2. But whatever the Blue Jays are clearly better than the tram that has more wins than every team in the American League since 2012. Boston is clearly better cause they won a world series despite the fact they've also finished LAST 3 out of 5 years.

I would be amazed if Trumbo hit over 30.....
Wait wait wait ...you think he's gonna do well based on 58 games worth of at bats? Really?
I'll ask a better question. What had Trumbo done since his first full season that would lead one to believe he's going to get better instead of being the same boom or bust out machine or declining?
Well he missed half of 2014 with a fractured foot..
Plus he hits pretty well in AL East ballparks (ironically not Camden Yards though )
Camden Yards (10 games): 7-for-35, 1 HR, 3 RBIs, .200 avg., .256 OBP, .343 slugging
Fenway Park (10 games): 12-for-40, 3 HR, 12 RBI, .300 avg., .375 OBP, .550 slugging
Yankee Stadium (15 games): 13-for-53, 4 HR, 7 RBI, .245 avg., .322 OBP, .491 slugging
Tropicana Field (9 games): 10-for-33, 2 HR, 7 RBI, .303 avg., .303 OBP, .545 slugging
Rogers Centre (14 games): 16-for-55, 6 HR, 15 RBI, .291 avg., .298 OBP, .727 slugging
Theres no reason his Camden numbers continue to be that bad over a full season.
Davis / Jones / Machado / Trumbo should all hit above 30 HR.
I said Trumbo, not Davis.... I'd put money on Trumbo and the under, but no interest in betting Davis either way....
He hit .254/.354/.550 at camden yards with 25 hr. His home road splits were near identical save for the fact his OBP was higher at home from more walks.
Was reading back in the thread. This stood out as proof to me none of you know anything. But again whatever I'm just a blind homer that knows nothing

Schoop will be better than Kipnis because he's 5 years younger and already hit 25 hr and was on pace for 30 in the 2nd half of 2015 (15 in 86 games) . Kipnis didn't even start playing til 24 and didn't hit 20 hrs til last year age 29.
Schoop will be in the 30 hr group with Trumbo Davis Machado and Jones this year. Plus he played in all 162 games last year which Kipnis has never done in his career.
I was wrong about Rickard to the extent of how he played when he was healthy but he was on the DL for a large portion of the year. Speaking of the Indians they seem to want Anthony Santander back from the Orioles..he's going to have a bigger impact as a Rule 5 pick than Rickard did.

The Indians blog I read wants him back because he projects out to a Victor Martinez type player and he's only 22. They figured the Orioles figured they could stash him on the DL due to a shoulder surgery he had in December to satisfy the rule 5 25 man roster requirement and because the surgery wasn't a major one like previously thought he's healthy and won't be going to the dl barring another injury. But no way he goes back to Cleveland. The Orioles can use a backup OF with his potential in the future and they've never shyed away from using a roster spot for a rule 5 player before (mist famous being Flaherty from the Cubs in 2011 he's still a bench player)
OF Trumbo Jones Kim Smith
IF Davis Schoop Hardy Machafo Flaherty
C Castillo Joseph
SP Tillman Gausman Bundy Jimenez Miley
RP Britton Oday Givens Brach Hart
There's 4 slots open for RP and utility players so there's a spot for Santander at least.
And Jones had 29 hr in 152 games last year and 27 in 137 in 2015. He's a 30 hr guy when he doesn't miss games (32 in 2012 in 162 and 33 in 2013 in 160).

And Jones had 29 hr in 152 games last year and 27 in 137 in 2015. He's a 30 hr guy when he doesn't miss games (32 in 2012 in 162 and 33 in 2013 in 160).
So the Indians blog not written by the Indians want him back? Great. Lmao Victor Martinez. Per mlb.com, real scouts rate him as an average regular at best. AT BEST. That's assuming he develops.
Likelihood is he's gonna set sent back because the Orioles think they can compete and having a dead bat on the roster who is maybe a backup outfielder long-term is a wasted roster spot for them.
But ok. He projects to be a Victor Martinez type. Based on a blog. Sure.

When he’s healthy, you see a hitter, as farfetched it may sound, that actually does look like Victor Martinez from the left-handed side.
Duquette also commented on Santander, where he was quoted as saying, “If you see him play, he has a lot of [Victor] Martinez’s mannerisms. He has a similar stance. Excellent young hitter. He was the best young player in the Carolina League.”
And he really does. Santander has developed a leg kick in which he uses in sync with his load. He has a very loose swing and for a 22 year old, it’s difficult to find a flaw in his approach at the plate. Much like Martinez, you see a guy whose bat-to-ball skills have aided his reputation. Comparing Santander to one of baseball’s most consistent bats over the last decade should sound like rubbish, but the tools speak too loudly too ignore.
From Camden Chat (http://www.camdenchat.com/2016/12/29/14108216/anthony-santander-brings-as-much-intrigue-as-insecurity)
Which is where the comparison to V Mart comes from
Indians blog article I mentioned earlier (http://www.letsgotribe.com/2017/2/27/14749700/anthony-santander-injury-baltimore-orioles-cleveland-indians)
The funny thing is Santander has never met Martinez and his batting stance and etc is all natural to him not trying to copy Martinez's

So who do you think has a more valid opinion? A fan blog who's citing batting stance as a reason for a player comp, or a site run by mlb with real scouting reports by actual scouts measuring tools and ability instead of silly things like batting stances?

Red Sox dodged a bullet with Price. Only needs rest and not surgery so just 1-2 Spring Training starts are missed.
Red Sox ace David Price won't need surgery after a second opinion on his throwing arm, manager John Farrell said Friday.
Price will undergo rest and treatment for the next 7-10 days.
Price underwent an MRI exam on Wednesday after experiencing soreness in his left elbow and forearm. The MRI showed swelling and fluid but was largely "inconclusive." Price then sought a second opinion from Dr. James Andrews and Dr. Neal ElAttrache -- two of sports' foremost orthopedic surgeons -- on Friday in Indianapolis, where they are attending the NFL scouting combine

For the second year in a row, the Mets have stuck to their hardline stance of not negotiating with their pre-arbitration eligible players and simply renewing their contracts. It was deGrom last year, and now Thor. Neither player signed their deals because they disagreed with what the team was offering them.
Reportedly the Mets and Thor were only $9k apart. Seems baffling to me that they'd miff their ace over what amounts to pennies in baseball.

From the excerpt:
An hour before the seventh game of the World Series, Rizzo stripped off all his clothes, cranked the theme from Rocky on the clubhouse stereo one more time, jumped on top of a coffee table and began quoting lines from the movie and throwing his best shadow-boxing punches. Pitcher Héctor Rondon, joining in on the hijinks, picked up an aerosol can of shoe cleaner and sprayed it in the direction of Rizzo's groin.
Startled and angered, Rizzo stopped and yelled, "What the heck, man!" He cut the music and stormed off toward the showers to clean off the spray.
"I'm thinking, Dang, what's he doing?" Ross said. "We can't have this negative vibe right before the game. I go by there. I can tell he's a little irritated."
Ten minutes went by. Rizzo finally emerged from the shower. He walked back silently to his locker with a towel around this waist. The room was quiet and uneasy.
Ross walked up to Rizzo and broke the silence.
"Hey! It's not how many times you get knocked down … it's how many times you get up!"
Rizzo chuckled. "You know what?" he said. "You're right!"
Said Ross, "He rips the towel off, runs up, turns the music on again, and he jumps back on the coffee table and starts doing the Rocky motions again."
Now, as Schwarber got ready to hit, Ross turned in Rizzo's direction and yelled at him, "Hey, it's not how many times you get knocked down…."
On cue Rizzo completed the battle cry, yelling back, "It's how many times you get back up!"
Eventually, Rizzo would find clothing for the rest of his speech, but he set the tone for the Cubs' historic night.
It's just another reminder that baseball clubhouses are, uh, unique.
You can read the entire excerpt here.

Mexico is currently upset at both the MLB and WBC in regards to tiebreaker rules for the WBC.
Asked several times what was needed to advance on tiebreakers prior to their last group stage game and got no responses back.
First found out what was needed by announcers from the tv broadcast during the game. Then found out after the game, the announcers were wrong and WBC's Twitter account said an elimination game was needed instead.
Then found out afterwards WBC's Twitter account was wrong and they were already eliminated since the WBC rules committee used a different tiebreaker instead.

Tim Tebow is going to the Columbia Fireflies in the SAL which the Orioles Affiliate Delmarva Shorebirds are a part of and I live 5 min from the stadium. Might have to go to the only time they play them here May 10-12 if he's still hanging aroubd

I don't care about the actual spring training stats, but with guys coming off of injury I do care about how they appear to be physically.
Matt Harvey is hitting 91, 92 on his fastball and getting hammered as a result because his secondary stuff isn't at the level of a guy like deGrom who was still dominant early in the year last year even when his velocity took a while to come back.
The Mets have 7 legit MLB starters. They can't afford to give games away in a tough division just to keep Harvey happy. Put Gsellman and Lugo in the rotation and let Harvey stay in extended spring training until his velocity is at a point where he can thrive on the big stage. There's no point in having starting pitching depth if you aren't going to use it.

Agree with Vito. You can gage health in spring training and a guy who is sitting 3 to 5 mph lower than his typical velocity is not a good sign. Keeping him in extended to build health is a good thing. Send him on some rehab starts while they're at it.
Evil Vito

Exactly. If Harvey's curve or change were good enough for him to overcome the lack of a fastball, it'd be fine to let him start the year. But they're not. And his slider never was the same after his TJS.
There's no shame in starting the year in extended spring with the rotation the Mets have. Wheeler's gonna stay back in extended too so he can pitch in controlled games as a way of limiting innings, and he seems 100% unlike Harvey. He probably won't be up until May and even then he may start in the pen just to let them stick to their plan of keeping him in the low 100s range for innings.
Syndergaard-deGrom-Matz-Gsellman-Lugo is still a damn fine rotation to open the year. They don't get a Wild Card berth without those last two. I really think Gsellman could be a legit ROTY candidate if he was in the bigs all year, and Lugo's been killing it in the WBC with the spin rate on his curveball.

It all hinges on Morales and Stroman.

Not even. No reason to think Stroman and their pitching staff won't keep them competitive. Morales will probably provide league average like offensive production.
The big problem right now in Toronto is left field. It is a giant hole and I don't think Melvin Upton is the answer.

Damian Rey 2.0
03-22-2017, 09:03 PM
Lol Kipnis is still better. He's a better hitter, better fielder and better base runner. Schoop is better at making lots of outs so I guess that's where your argument is from.
And yes, contacts are back loaded, but not to the ridiculous extent you insinuated. Machado isn't going to take 15 mil a year for the first 3 years. That's absurd when he's probably gonna make 25 to 30 mil a year. You're thinking he'll take half that when somebody will happily pay it upfront if ridiculous.

The Cardinals are doing what the braves did last year. $30 a month gets you a guaranteed standing room spot for every Cardinals game. Supposedly MLB is pushing teams to do this although I can't see the Cubs or Yankees doing it..

Does the Chi Sox have standing room only? Feels weird having to stand when there are 100,000 open seats.

I wish the Padres would open up the sun deck out on centerfield for standing room. However it's group tickets only.
Thankfully there's deck right above it with a bar.

That's awesome. I'd say probably 80%+ of Tigers games I go to, I get SRO. Beautiful view, you're close to vendors, you don't have to worry about "sitting together" if you're with a large group, etc.
$30/month for that would be fucking incredible. I doubt it would be that cheap though. Must vary on a team-by-team basis
