<font color=goldenrod>The "old school mentality" is that you bat your best hitter 3rd no matter what with the theory that the #1 and #2 hitters stand the best chance of being on base ahead of him to drive in runs.

In reality though, quite often the #3 hitter will come up in the first inning with nobody on. And once you go through the batting order once the order becomes irrelevant. Hitting your best guy second will lead to more at bats for said hitter over the course of the full season.</font>

Harvey pitching, multiple umpire reviews, a bogus catcher's interference call, several hit batters, benches warned, manager ejected. Cuddyer AND Wright both leaving via injury, leaving the Mets to finish and win the game with backup catcher Anthony Recker at third. Recker has never played a professional game at third base.

Anyway, a win's a win. Wright pulled hammy though. Dude has been locked in to start the year. Allmost certainly a DL stint, those injuries can linger. Time to see what the team is really made of when you go through a game like that.</font>

Interesting replay call in the marlins/mets game just now. MLB replays way more unpredictable than NFL. Same logic to draw our own conclusions can't necessarily be used. Feel like an NFL ref would have just been like "fuck it, call stands"

The new replay rules basically mean you need to ignore the ump and keep playing if there is any doubt in your mind about the call.</font>

The Bad: Today was very costly. Jerry Blevins fractured his forearm in the top of the 7th inning. He was their only true lefty specialist and he had been a perfect 15 for 15 retiring lefty batters this year. Then in the bottom of the 7th Travis d'Arnaud fractured his right hand getting hit by a pitch. He's been their best offensive player this week and his defense has been world's better than last year.

A mediocre team would let these type of injuries weigh them down, so hopefully that doesn't happen here. I'm more concerned about the Blevins injury since the Mets will be calling up top prospect Kevin Plawecki to fill in at catcher.</font>

Cubs game was V fun tonight. Totally different vibe watching this team compared to last year. They are playing a bit over their heads though. Always torn about the DH. I like NL ball better because I like all the strategy that goes into lineup manipulation especially late in the game. On the other hand, another hitter is better to see not to mention the game could probably use some more offense in a predominantly pitching friendly era.

Wonder if you could do something wacky like allowing the home team to choose DH or not, and expand the roster to 26 with 25 being active for a game. Probably dumb since I'm guessing everyone but Joe Maddon would pick the DH everytime.

Those older guys who can still hit but not do much else can still be saved as a lethal bat for late in the game. In the modern NL it's tough to keep a one-dimensional player like that around as a pinch-hit specialist since, again, NL baseball behooves a team to have a diverse, flexible bench.

Owners might not be happy about having to pay 2 more guys a Major League salary, but budgets may still go down with the high-paying DH job gone. The teams that would have a big issue with it are the Tigers, Yankees, etc. who have high paid DHs who pretty much can't field anymore and now there'd be nowhere for them to play.</font>
