<font color=goldenrod>Damn. deGrom made one bad pitch, Granderson K'ed looking with the bases loaded on a ball a foot out of the zone, and they had 7 or 8 hard hit balls go right into the gloves of defenders. 2-1 loss. A hard luck loss pretty much.

They keep putting some really good wood ( :naughty: ) on the ball like that and they should be in good shape. Tonight they just got BABIP'd.</font>

<font color=goldenrod>Missed MLB Tonight so much this offseason. Hilarious hearing Harold Reynolds and Billy Ripken be completely incredulous at teams batting their best hitters 2nd while Greg Amsinger has to spell out the concept for them.</font>

Frank Drebin

<font color=goldenrod>The "old school mentality" is that you bat your best hitter 3rd no matter what with the theory that the #1 and #2 hitters stand the best chance of being on base ahead of him to drive in runs.

In reality though, quite often the #3 hitter will come up in the first inning with nobody on. And once you go through the batting order once the order becomes irrelevant. Hitting your best guy second will lead to more at bats for said hitter over the course of the full season.</font>

<font color=goldenrod>One of the weirdest fucking games I've ever seen. Harvey pitching, multiple umpire reviews, a bogus catcher's interference call, several hit batters, benches warned, manager ejected. Cuddyer AND Wright both leaving via injury, leaving the Mets to finish and win the game with backup catcher Anthony Recker at third. Recker has never played a professional game at third base.

Anyway, a win's a win. Wright pulled hammy though. Dude has been locked in to start the year. Allmost certainly a DL stint, those injuries can linger. Time to see what the team is really made of when you go through a game like that.</font>

The only pitchers since 1914 to open their careers with five victories in as many outings over baseball's most storied franchise are Bernie Boland, who did it with Detroit between 1915-17 and Charlie Hough, who accomplished the feat for Texas from 1982-83.

Interesting replay call in the marlins/mets game just now. MLB replays way more unpredictable than NFL. Same logic to draw our own conclusions can't necessarily be used. Feel like an NFL ref would have just been like "fuck it, call stands"

Evil Vito
04-16-2015, 09:38 PM
<font color=goldenrod>I'm obviously biased given that it's the Mets but I just don't see how anything can be conclusive/irrefutable if it takes 5 minutes to reach a decision.

Replay official said they could determine Travis d'Arnaud didn't tag Ichiro. I can only assume Miami's TV had a better angle because SNY didn't have anything.</font>

Evil Vito
04-16-2015, 09:40 PM
<font color=goldenrod>Also the other thing - the replay clearly showed Ichiro didn't get the tag in until his second dive, which was after the ump already called out. d'Arnaud didn't try to dive after him because he saw the ump rule Ichiro out.

The new replay rules basically mean you need to ignore the ump and keep playing if there is any doubt in your mind about the call.</font>

It was a good spot to do if it was intentional. Putting a guy on 1st with two outs and the guy up next is hitting like .180.

<font color=goldenrod>The Good: Mets win their 8th game in a row, all against the NL East

The Bad: Today was very costly. Jerry Blevins fractured his forearm in the top of the 7th inning. He was their only true lefty specialist and he had been a perfect 15 for 15 retiring lefty batters this year. Then in the bottom of the 7th Travis d'Arnaud fractured his right hand getting hit by a pitch. He's been their best offensive player this week and his defense has been world's better than last year.

A mediocre team would let these type of injuries weigh them down, so hopefully that doesn't happen here. I'm more concerned about the Blevins injury since the Mets will be calling up top prospect Kevin Plawecki to fill in at catcher.</font>

Cubs game was V fun tonight. Totally different vibe watching this team compared to last year. They are playing a bit over their heads though. Alot of those Castro rbi hits have been more of the seeing eye variety rather than the hard hit kind. I'll stand by my feelings that make the playoffs or not, this may be the most exciting team to watch.

I get the theory of it but the other new age thing is to have your best hitter up in the 2 spot to get him more ABs, so doesn't that mean you are also giving your worst hitter more ABs as well.?

Frank Drebin
04-26-2015, 03:31 PM
Always torn about the DH. I like NL ball better because I like all the strategy that goes into lineup manipulation especially late in the game. On the other hand, another hitter is better to see not to mention the game could probably use some more offense in a predominantly pitching friendly era.

Wonder if you could do something wacky like allowing the home team to choose DH or not, and expand the roster to 26 with 25 being active for a game. Probably dumb since I'm guessing everyone but Joe Maddon would pick the DH everytime.

Damian Rey
04-26-2015, 03:56 PM
The strategy and lineup manipulation is phoney though. The national league average of pitching changes is only a marginal amount more than its American counterpart.

I'm all for the dh league wide. If I wanna see someone flail helplessly at breaking balls, I'll record my Sunday league at bats.

Evil Vito

<font color=goldenrod>I love NL baseball and will continue to defend it. I love the late decisions that factor into games. Pitcher is throwing a gem in a close game, keep him in or pinch hit? The late-game double switches. The need to actually have a well-rounded bench with guys who can play multiple positions. Bartolo Colon batting.</font>

Evil Vito
04-26-2015, 04:09 PM
<font color=goldenrod>Although this has no chance of happening, my solution would be to eliminate the DH league-wide and expand the rosters to 27 players. The union would need a damn good reason to agree to eliminating the DH, so this proposal would placate them by creating 60 new jobs league wide.

I figure in this scenario most teams would carry an extra relief pitcher and then a 6 man bench. Those older guys who can still hit but not do much else can still be saved as a lethal bat for late in the game. In the modern NL it's tough to keep a one-dimensional player like that around as a pinch-hit specialist since, again, NL baseball behooves a team to have a diverse, flexible bench.

Owners might not be happy about having to pay 2 more guys a Major League salary, but budgets may still go down with the high-paying DH job gone. The teams that would have a big issue with it are the Tigers, Yankees, etc. who have high paid DHs who pretty much can't field anymore and now there'd be nowhere for them to play.</font>

How EXACTLY did Matt Harvey get the nickname "The Dark Knight of Gotham"?

<font color=goldenrod>I believe Sports Illustrated wrote an article about him when he was taking the league by storm in 2013 calling him that, and it just sort of stuck. Harvey himself took to it. Been pretty outspoken that he wants to be the savior of the team and live the superstar lifestyle, date supermodels, sign the 9 figure contract, etc. Of course the NY media took the last part and ran with it assuming he'll be a Yankee in 2019 but whatever.

Funny thing is I read an article this past offseason about this whole "soul-searching" trip Harvey did in Asia the winter after his TJS. It sounded exactly like one of those exotic trips Bruce Wayne would take before returning to Gotham.</font>

<font color=goldenrod>At age 35, Pujols is currently hitting at a .210 clip with 4 HR and 10 RBI. Making a cool $24 million this year. Let's take a look at the rest of his contract shall we:

2016: $25,000,000
2017: $26,000,000
2018: $27,000,000
2019: $28,000,000
2020: $29,000,000
2021: $30,000,000

Pretty hard to see that not ending up as the worst contract of all time. By a significant margin.</font>

And yet teams will continue to dole out these ridiculously long deals for guys in their 30s.

Never understood why, if you really wanted a player, you wouldn't pay a ridiculous yearly amount for a shorter time. Like, here's 5 years $150 million Albert.

<font color=goldenrod>Mets have come crashing back down to earth spectacularly. Since their 11 game winning streak they've now lost 7 of 10 and just got blanked 1-0 by the Nats for the second day in a row. Thanks to the streak they're still 6 games over .500 but they don't even come close to resembling the same team.

On the plus side, they have a really weird schedule this week with 2 off days. With Wright apparently due back Saturday that means they'll only have 3 more games without him. They need him back in the lineup in a bad way.</font>

Outside of luxury tax reasons, its almost always the players and/or agents who push for those long contracts. They'd rather have the extra years than extra cash upfront.

No big league teams going to Carolina in his mind.

Brewers fired manager Ron Roenicke. Happened during the night's Yanks-Red Sox game.

Wow. It's the first week of May. I'm not a fan of his (I think he got out foxed by LaRussa when MKE had a great team and should have gone to the series) but this seems like a GM trying to shift blame for a team he assembled that looks all out of sorts.

Name their starting first baseman without looking it up.
