Except for the fact there's a black Nordic god and Zeus looks like some shitty officer working on a spaceship in a sci-fi TV series, the trailer looks promising.

I don't think Thor will be good. It looks like it will be entertaining though.
I heard this kind of statement before so I wanna ask: Why is an entertaining movie not a good movie to you? Like I'd consider anything that manages to entertain me 'good'.
And conversely, are there 'good' movies that aren't entertaining to you?

A good movie is also entertaining. A Steven Seagal movie is just entertaining. The plot will be dumb, and the acting will be bad to questionable. The action and special effects will probably kickass and make it entertaining.
Another example
First Blood Part 2 and 3 are entertaining while First Blood is good.
Um... yeah.

So we're all agreed that they should have went with X4, eh?
Yeah. They could have come with any excuse to bring back people like Cyclops and Rogue, or just bring in others that we hadn't seen yet. Nightcrawler could have come back, and maybe Angel could have actually done something. But it's not like they need a totally realistic excuse since it's a comic movie.
Then I would have loved to see a different bad guy for once other than Magneto or the Brotherhood. Apocalypse would have been my first choice, but anyone like Sinister, the Sentinels, the Brood etc.
Also, I remember there was a picture someone made of the Rock as Mr. Sinister which looked awesome.

Thor looks awesome. You have no idea what you're talking about.
The kid playing Xavier was in a movie with Angelina Jolie about making bullets turn directions with the power of your will!
Never seen it, but judging by the plot it has GOT the be a classic.
That film would be WANTED, which is actually based on a comic/graphic novel and was pretty good. And thats coming from someone that isn't an action film fan for the most part. I found it much more enjoyable than The Expendables for example.
And the "kid playing Xavier" is James McAvoy. Again, he's a pretty good actor.
But don't let the fact that you know nothing about the guy, his talents or his body of work get in the way of your bitching. ;)

I don't think Gambit is "overrated." I think he's just a great supporting character who caught on very quickly and became way popular among fans because of how "badass" he was.
What his character represents and brings to the table doesn't really match that popularity. He just doesn't have the substance, (from what I've read) to match his style.
So basically what you have is a character that isn't tremendously deep, nor should it be, but their popularity has brought them to a level where people either pedestal them, or resent them for not being as realized as a Joker or Magneto. Supporting characters with the popularity of major players.
This happens all the time with pop characters, though. It's the Boba Fett effect. I can't say anything because I love Gambit (and Fett), but it's almost definitely a style thing.

Yea. I see parts that seem good. I'm excited to see Thor on the big screen, but I also have this strong feeling that it's going to be 50% frozen caveman gags, like Natalie Portman teaching him how to do laundry and use the internet and him being really confused and stuff.
Such low hanging fruit right there for the screenwriters.
That's sort of the direction comic book movies have decided to go, and it usually disappoints me. I'd rather them just take Thor and go all the way with it, and only worry about getting him into modern times by The Avengers.
Seems like every "Marvel" movie takes the light-hearted modern approach with a peppy romance, and it doesn't serve every character.
They know what they're doing though, and what sells. Apparently DC does too, since they're apparently taking Green Lantern from Iron Man's entire playbook.
I just don't think Thor should be tackled in the same vein as Iron Man and Spidey. I know there's plenty of Asgard and stuff in there, but ultimately I think it's obvious it's going to be a pretty standard modern-superhero flick. Whatever that ends up meaning.
Hopefully, with Cap America, Joe Johnston is able to deliver on a WWII adventure with a golden age feel. My biggest hope is that it feels like Raiders of the Lost Ark or a perfected Rocketeer.
My biggest worry is that it plays like The Mummy or something, in that it's only set in the past and doesn't capture it.
I also have concerns of it being anything like the G.I. Joe movie.

Well maybe he's chasing the killer after the wrestling show? That would explain the lack of webshooters and the shitty costume.
That's just an idea though, and probably not true.
I have no excuses. Even if it was just the post-wrestling sequence, I'm all set with seeing that done again already. Raimi covered it quite well. I love that whole sequence.
If they're going to revisit everything about the origins (even in partial Ultimate style), they should structure the film differently. Maybe it should open with Parker already Spidey, and the story already at a certain place.
Flashbacks and such could show origins material.
Really I just want to see them at least do something different. And that doesn't mean I want them to make the suit look really awful or change important characters either.
But I would almost prefer Jameson to be a huge hardass and borderline villain just so that they don't have to try to re-capture what JK Simmons did, or take us back through the Daily Bugle in the style Raimi did (which was gold.)

The one thing I love about this Spidey is the casting though. I have good feelings about Andrew Garfield in the role. I just hope they can get through this high school and origins stuff again without me finding it annoying or inferior. That's why I think it would be best if they toyed with how they structure it, but we'll see.
I'm chomping at the bit to see Parker a little bit older and self-assured. Hopefully it doesn't take 3 movies and another cast/director/reboot to get there. Leather jakcet and a staff job. And a true version of Mary Jane (Dunst was awful.)
And I want to see Kingpin, and some of the 70s and 80s villains done proper. I love the classic villains as much as any of them, but it'd be nice to see Spidey taking on more than just deranged teachers and family friends who had bad science accidents. I get the story value there, but there's also the appeal of him taking on NYC itself, and a whole crime element.
The mean Jameson would be great there, to make it all harder for him in the public eye.

Dafoe was good, but it wasn't something that I can't see being topped. Molina, however was perfect as doc ock.
Also, the problem with mary jane in the old movies is that they tried to make mary jane like she is in the modern spider-man comics. A mature, strong adult. Didn't work, as the story was about spidey's early years, when the more iconic, bubbley version of mary jane was around.

Y'know, I actually like the new suit. The only thing that really irks me about it is the lack of a 'belt' area, but I really don't see why everyone's getting all bent out of shape about it. It's a scrawny kid who sewed a costume together in his basement; why wouldn't it look a little off?
Anyway, I'm pretty optimistic about the reboot. I know a lot of folks aren't happy with them going back and doing another origin, but I'm honestly liking the fact that they're doing it this way. The casting all looks pretty great, they're using a villain that hasn't been used before (and ostensibly giving a proper buildup for more major villains like Osborn), making proper use of Spidey's other main love interest so Gwen Stacy's not just there to make Mary Jane jealous and bitchy like in Spider-Man 3, and yes, I'm digging the fact that he has gadget web-shooters again. If we're lucky they'll change the structure of the story a bit so it's not just a re-done version of Spider-Man 1 (I like Jeritron's idea of having Peter already be Spidey when the movie starts), but if not, I mean hey, at least they're trying to get it right.
Jeritron
01-26-2011, 11:55 AM
The biggest problem with Dunst's MJ was that she started off like MJ, but by the second movie she was just a miserable bitch, for lack of a better term.
She became more and more brutal and really just served as a plot device to keep Parker unhappy and troubled. She even started to look and act in a way that was the antithesis of MJ.
They thought having her throw "tiger" into a line of dialogue once a movie was going to rememdy the shortcomings, but after the first movie it was pretty obvious that they'd decided to shitcan the Mary Jane character and just play it another way.
Granted, Spider-Man 2 is easily the best of the Spidey films and in my Top 2 or 3 of comic book films alltime, but they certainly dropped the ball on that character.

And the new Venom (comics) is Flash Thompson! I am fucking thrilled because I've been sort of a Flash fan for many years. In fact while watching the 90's Spidey toon, I felt Flash should of been Venom rather than Brock (source material be damned). I liked his scenes in the first Spidey movie and the whole 'picks on Peter but loves Spider-Man' a character generated mixed feelings in me. So yeah, hearing that he's getting a push as the new SpecOp-ified Venom is good news for me. His first challenge will be Kraven the Hunter. Here's hopping he gets to face Spidey himself someday.

So today we are more than happy to bring you a list of young up and coming actresses who are testing for a new female sidekick part in Joss Whedon’s “The Avengers”. Samuel L. Jackson, Nick Fury himself, told the Jimmy Fallon audiences last night that he would be meeting with five actresses tomorrow for a sidekick position opposite his character, and today THR reports that four of the five young ladies are Morena Baccarin, Jessica Lucas, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Cobie Smulders.
While I presume the character in question is SHIELD mainstay, Maria Hill (who Morena would be perfect for), I gotta have hopes for my perfect woman Jessica Lucas. This could be her break, though she doesn't seem suited for Maria Hill (if she's the character).
Notes:
- Nick Fury will appear in Captain America and Thor this summer.
- Chris Evans is set to be Cap in six movies. What ratio of Captain America to Avengers movie aren't said. Bear in mind he could appear in Iron Man and that could count. Many of these deals are unique in that actors are signed to appear as their characters, but not signed to particular movies. The sixth movie could be Civil War for all we know. I imagine Marvel will push out bargain priced movies and save big spending for cross over films. They'd also have the actors rotate as to service their own careers and keep them 'fresh'. So Chris Evans may cameo as Cap in Iron Man 3 and then star in Captain America 2 the year after. These are just my stab at 'industry analyzing'.
Errr, Cobbie Smulders as Maria Hill would most definetely not work.
And Morena Baccarin? We know she looks hot even if short hair, so yeah.

Would have to say, of all the superhero costumes I've seen put together for movies, this Captain America costume is by far the best.

I'm guessing that's from the newer part of the film based on the head gear.
It might not be maria hill. I would guess it's Daisy Johnson, his protege in the comics since secret war.
Doesn't she look the same as Maria Hill anyway?

Why is the Johnny Storm playing Captian America? What the hell is Marvel thinking? They fuck up the stories to "keep it fresh" then cast the same actor for two different but huge roles in the Marvel universe. Hollywood just blows the big one.

Because some actors can play more than one type of role, and the fantastic four movies have nothing to do with, and are not connected to the avengers movies?

This is for regular Nick, not sure which backround story they'll use
Nick Fury's aging has been slowed greatly by the Infinity Formula, a serum created by Dr. Berthold Sternberg. Fury was first inoculated with the serum in the 1940s. Fury took the serum annually for many years. Due to its cumulative effect, Fury no longer needs additional doses to prolong his life span.

The basics from Wiki-
In the "Three" storyline, concluding in Fantastic Four #587 (cover date March 2011, published January 26, 2011), the Human Torch apparently dies stopping a horde of monsters from the other dimensional Negative Zone. The series is scheduled to end with the following issue, #588, and relaunch in March 2011 as simply FF.

So, Angel has dragonfly wings instead of "angel" wings...
:nono:
For the last !@#$%ing time, it's based on a different angel.

Wasp isn't a mutant.
She is in the ultimate universe. And they seem to like to mix and match 616 and ultimate un these movies.

So I finally went and wiki'd her. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angel_Salvadore .
I've still never heard of her, and am willing to bet that anyone with only casual knowledge of the X-Universe will join me in assuming a character named Angel will be a permutation of the Warren Worthington III character.

Isn't she the one who had babies with Beak a few years back?
Edit: Decided not to be lazy and read the wikipedia page.

A) Ugly as fuck b) Why the fuck did they kill off Johnny Storm, undo that shit right now. Replacing him with Spider-Man, stupid as fuck. There are certain things you shouldn't mess with the Fantastic Four lineup is one of them.
Edit: Oh what the fuck even worse this is the end of the Fantastic Four they're being renamed The Future Foundation WTF is this shit?

I thought that X-Men trailer looked better than the lousy looking Thor and Green Lantern trailer.

Nonsense.
Nothing is off limits as long as there is good writing behind it. Winter Soldier should have taught everyone that.
I like bold moves like this one. It shows that people aren't willing to put creativity aside for the sake of offending traditionalist thinkers. That is probably why I like Grant Morrison, because it defines his career.
Now that isn't to say I am going to automatically praise anything like this. In fact, the risk is great with this type of move, because it is either a huge success, or a huge failure. There is no inbetween.
That said, I know enough about judging a book by it's cover, and how many times I've been wrong in doing so in this industry, to know that it would be unwise to condemn it, before I even read the fucking thing.

Not like the lineup hasn't been messed with before. Even if it'll likely go back to the original status quo some day, what's the harm in trying something new?

Blah, blah, blah, wah! change, change!
Fantastic Four has been at it's best in years, this is just part of a greater scheme of things. As for Spider-Man replacing Johnny... uh hello? They were friends and Spider-Man was ALWAYS close to them. He's smart and powerful, very useful to the team. Don't like it? Read something else or there's always "classic" stuff out there. The goal here is to sell the book better than it has been doing and it needs an epic story, this is it. Keeping things stagnant and 'safe' for too long is never a good thing either.
It's not like this is permanent anyway, they have like 12 issues and then once sales start to lower, bam! time for issue 600 because FF is getting cut off after 588. Just enough to tell a year long story and start the third chapter with a reverted issue 600.

Don't worry I don't plan on reading it. I follow comics through Trades every so often and mostly through plot summaries. I still say those costumes are awful.
Isn't Spider-Man now a member of the Avengers, The New Avengers and the FF?

To be fair, the Fantastic Four has been a major part of the Marvel Universe for so long, it's not like they'll be this way forever. I give it a year, two at the most, before the Human Torch comes back somehow and the Future Foundation becomes the Fab 4 again.
