Been thinking about that X-Men series though and going through some questions. Is it going to be a direct continuation? Or we ignoring that horribly-animated last season? "Graduation Day" actually hit me in the feels with those last moments even the rest of the episode left a lot to be desired. Will it remain in the nineties or are we bringing in some of the bullshit stories post-turn of the century? How will it look? Is it just a complete reset? What characters that weren't featured in the original run will be presented, if at all? One of the biggest omissions that I can recall was Shadowcat. Like, what the hell? What say you?
Fignuts
11-14-2021, 05:15 PM
Since it's specifically called 97', I imagine it will be a direct continuation, with the same jim lee inspired art style. It will likely look a lot cleaner around the edges.
As for content, they could adapt stuff like Fatal Attraction, X-Cutioner's Song, and Onslaught. Maybe even an Age of Apocalypse arc.
Might be cool to see later stories like House of M and Messiah Complex adapted with 90's characters and settings.
Shadowcat's omission was understandable as she really didn't feature at all in x-men comics at the time, outside of Excalibur, which was just barely an x-book. 90's was all about Jubilee.

For style, I imagine it will probably look like the new Animaniacs... you can see the old 90s designs, but the animation is smoother/rounder.
M-A-G
11-14-2021, 11:04 PM
They had characters showing up out of context all the time. Psylocke was probably one of the worst cases along with the mutants in Skull Mesa. Shadowcat could've been squeezed in. Hell, Nightcrawler got some love and he was in the same boat as she was. Oh, and Rachel Summers needs to show up, too.

I will always link the voice of Xavier in this show to the character, even with Patrick Stewart's portrayal. Magneto, Rogue, Wolverine, and Gambit were also tops. Beast's worked for that incarnation of the character, leaning way heavily into the scholarly part instead of the wisecracking, light-hearted aspect.

out of respect for my boy lock jaw i'm putting this in spoiler tags
tinfoil hat areas i guess but i think that is 100% andrew garfield's spidey reaching down to save MJ in this shot:
https://i.imgur.com/nqMKiRf.png
richer blue vs the iron spider's deep navy, plus the whole thing mirrors gwen and will be his chance to 'redeem' himself for not saving gwen
also this isn't reflected in the trailer and we can't go off toys for everything but the gold-lined iron spider suit tom holland's peter is wearing during that fight seemingly doesn't have red fingers
https://i.imgur.com/lFtUXcI.png
however, they are red in the trailer--but i wouldn't be surprised if they changed it for this precise reason. plus lizard is looking in a whole-ass other direction in that 'spidey leaping at all the villains' shot, so the assumption there is garfield's peter has been CGI'd out
i think the richness of the blue is slightly more compelling but either way i will be v surprised if it's not garfield's peter saving MJ
also feel like peter's decision to save MJ over ned could lead to ned's hobgoblin heel turn, or possibly the second green goblin we see in the trailer is a ned from a different universe (or dane dehan's but it doesn't quite look like him) so 'our' ned never actually breaks bad
greatly enjoyed electro getting a brief flash of a comics-accurate headpiece
the prevailing theory is strange is mephisto and thus the sixth of the sinister six but i dunno i've been burned about mephisto before. he def seems 'off' though
anyway, looks pretty good. no way it lives up to the hype but it should be a good time regardless

Dafne Keen said several times that she'd be X23/Wolverine in a heartbeat. Despite something like that being right up the princess factory's alley, there's not so much rumblings going on. In fact they ain't say a word about X-Men in a long time.

they will not use fox continuity thats certain...except deadpool. this entire phase though is establishing 2 things: the multiverse and magic. my take it 2 universes are going to fold into one another, via Scarlett Witch, and one of those is going to contain mutants. this will bring in the x-men. a new cast but with a story already in progress. a seasoned team thats been at it some years and giving an explination as to why theres suddenly mutants everywhere.

I read somewhere online that apparently they were gonna try and top Spider-Man: No Way Home with all the multiverse madness in this film. Rumours were that Hugh Jackson and Patrick Stewart were both going to make cameos as Wolverine/Professor X.
If that were the case, they could have shit loads of fan-service fun with this movie.

Things I'd want done properly in any new X-Men movies:
A proper adaptation of Psylocke. She's a fucking good guy, for fuck's sake.
A proper Rogue and Gambit romance.
A story surrounding Genosha. That pitiful piece of shit in Dark Phoenix was a fucking joke.
Polaris and Havok done right.
Sinister.
Apocalypse done right.

I've thought for a while that I'd like to see them try something different rather than the same x-men story we've seen already. Adapt the Wolverine and the X-men books where prof. X and Jean Grey are dead, and wolverine and kitty pride have taken over the school as headmaster. Great way to introduce some of the cooler new characters they've come out with over the years as students, while having some old favorites as teachers.
Plus that was just a really fun book that would work great on screen.
I want Rogue to be black.
Well, she is a thief.
Blonde Moment
12-26-2021, 10:13 AM
maybe a variation on X men: Evolution. Its going to be hard because so much of the good stuff does not translate very well from paper to film and might work better on Disney+ with 10-episode arcs cumulating in a movie every 2 years to wrap things up and start another arc. First 10-20 episodes dealing with Krakoa (rehashing Giant size X men) with movie ending with the birth of the Phoenix

I mean, she can be younger. But depending on much of the dynamics they're gonna retain Gambit would similarly need to be younger I guess.
Then again if they're launching a new sub-franchise it would be best to go with a generally younger cast all around except for ProfX and Mags.

Would also be down for a Genosha story. I think X-Men 97 touched on it here and there, but not to the full extent.
It was a HUGE society.... like tens of millions of mutants living in their own "society" or whatever, I thought. Could be interesting to see it from inception to destructive end.

Just from a visual perspective there's a lot you can do with Genosha. Bringing to life this weird mix of a utopia and a dystopia and exploring the ins and outs of it would be interesting. The political and social themes are also there for the pickings. I couldn't believe it when I learned that the island Magneto and his followers inhabited in Dark Phoenix was supposed to be Genosha. Like, seriously? A bunch of fucking huts in the middle of nowhere was the best he could do?

It could just be a thing of Kamala gravitating more towards Carol a la Kate Bishop to Clint Barton. Remember, Kamala is a super geek. Like, ridiculously super geek. It's not outside the realm of possibility for her to be a fan especially considering we don't know what those five years were like or what Carol's post-Endgame career entailed and how far apart this story is from all of that. Carol could have been shoved into the limelight to fill the Black Widow gap and if that's the case, I'm hoping that and how Carol handles that is something that gets explored in her second movie. I'm getting ahead of myself, though. Let's just see how this plays out.

But, yeah, Werewolf by Night was a lot of fun. It's very stylish and doing it in the way they did is such a call back to old school cinema. It's got the vibe of "The Post-Modern Prometheus" of The X-Files. It was nice to see Harriet Harris as I always thought the roles she did in the nineties were great, like in Frasier. Werewolf by Night himself could've been a bit scarier or more monstrous but I suppose they were trying to pay homage to the Wolfman of old. I'd be down for more one-shots like this.
Plus, what a way to incorporate Man-Thing!!!

Some pretty wild rumors about Secret Wars and the 'point' of the multiverse saga but the rumor mill went WAY downhill since I used to share stuff here. For Likes and Shares people just blert all kinds of fan theories and actor interviews taken out of context as news. Even the sources I trusted for over a decade went to shit.
Anyway, lil bit rumor lil bit analysis:
Kang deploys his own evil Avengers in the form of Steve Rogers (Secret Empire variant), Tony Stark, and Natasha Romanov (if she took over Drakov's operation). This idea not only resurrects fan faves, but mixes nicely with One Who Remain's philosophy about how worse things could get with timeliness diverging out of control. Does sound like wishful thinking, but sound attraction for a big finale.
Peter 2 and Peter 3 returns. While Tobey's return is actually substantiated by his interest in returning to the role, Andrew's involvement is whispered to follow an Amazing 3 movie. Of course this is tied up with Sony's silliness but if the latter is true then that makes for weight toward another tidbit - Emma Stone as Gwen variant Spider-Gwen.
There's this messy mixed messages about which Secret Wars will have more influence, but it seems entirely predicated on the OG story giving Peter 1 his black suit. And people really want this to happen and that's kinda skewing the good dirtsheets from wishlists. Given all this multiverse stuff it's very likely the modern Secret Wars with battle world and all that. But yeah, Tom may get his edgy moment.
The multiverse will end with a new One Who Remains (a Kang variant again) and a new Sacred Timeline. And those Mutants? Well the reason, and this is all my speculation, for Kevin waiting so long to pull the trigger is because they are probably going to put the MCU on their back. Like the Avengers who's heroes drove the bulk of MCU's events it'll be the X-Men driving the MCU - with an X-Men film being the big finales of a phase. They pretty much burned thru half a century of 616 canon with the Avengers and the X-Men have another half century more of plots for another decade of MCU.
But who knows.

There's a lot you're expected to buy but once you know what it's going to be about, you realize there's potential for a ton of comedy. The two strongest IPs Marvel has is Spider-Man and the X-Men. Spider-Man is obviously controlled by Sony. Disney spent 71.3 billion to aquire the X-Men. Anyone who who suggest rebranding their strongest controlled IP should not be making any decisions especially given Disneys sizable financial woes.
More shakeups to come for Marvel and Lucasfilm though. With a bit a of luck people who like the source material will be hired. That would be a boon.

If nothing else, it's funny when they reference it for a bit of meta-humor. Deadpool's speech to his team in his second movie also brings it up. If I can address the issue you brought up about the writers, you can make a distinction between someone not liking X-Men at all and liking X-Men but not appreciating a certain creative direction they're taking. If it's the former, no matter the franchise, I've never understood having that mindset, but wanting to work on a project relating to it.

Well obviously its work so theyre after a pay check. In their eyes they can "fix it." My take i these IPs have lasted over half a century because they resonate. If you dont like the source material so be it but ultimately your job is to adapt it.
The path to success then would be to understand what about it has worked instead of trying mold it into what you wish it was. And if you cant then make a derivative that meets those needs. If you're right it will outperform the original concept and it will die a deserving death.

Yes. But I trust they can do enough fun stuff with it in a Deadpool movie to get by. Maybe it’ll be the thing that kills off multiverse movies for a while. The teen slasher movie trend was effectively killed off by the spoofs that followed it, over saturation of that genre meant it are itself and we're back with new instalments of the teen slasher movies. It all comes around again.

X-Men '97 Footage Wows Comic-Con Crowd As First Details Surface Online
Story by Danny Bojic • 1h ago
***NOTE FROM M-A-G***: Going to take some precautions in case you don't want anything spoiled. Not sure if this is the kind of show that would necessitate such actions, but if you are curious, by all means, click on.
San Diego Comic-Con is in full swing, and despite actors not attending in solidarity with the SAG-AFTRA strike, there's still plenty of news coming out of the legendary convention. During the "Designing the X-Men" panel, Marvel surprised audiences, giving them an exclusive first look at the upcoming animated series "X-Men '97."
According to The Cosmic Circus, one clip shows the X-Men interrogating Dr. Bolivar Trask, the creator of the Sentinels, who will be one of the primary antagonists of the reboot. Jean Grey uses her telepathy to enter his mind, and not only is she pregnant, but it looks like Rachel Summers is on the way. @UncannyLZ described Jean using Cerebro, which induced a vision where she was no longer pregnant, and a baby resembling Rachel approached her.
Cyclops also got his time in the spotlight at SDCC, with footage featuring him saying a variation of his iconic "To me, my X-Men" line. Another clip showed the X-Men falling through the air and Cyclops using his laser beams to slow their descent. According to CBR, one clip revealed Master Mold's presence in the series and confirmed Archangel and Bishop as official members of the X-Men.

Vanessa Kirby has apparently been cast as Sue Storm for the MCU's version of Fantastic Four. She looks the part at the very least.
Don’t think I’ve seen anything she’s in but yeah, looks the part.

She's been in the last two Mission Impossible films. I believe she is also in the upcoming Napoleon biopic with Joaquin Phoenix; play's Napoleon's wife, Josephine.

She's blonde and a woman, so looks the part for sure!

Well they dont often get the superficial aspects right so its definitely a plus. Here's hoping that she both looks like Sue and perhaps she can even act like her too. But im not holding my breath

Yeah..... don't like it. Almost like the 5th season of the OG run of the show where their budget was slashed and they had to outsource the animation. Quality took a nosedive that 5th season.
Just.... keep it like it was, why change was doesn't need changing maaaaaaaaan?

It has to change at least a little bit due to everything being done by computers these days, which was always gonna make it lose a little bit of its charm. Like the new Animaniacs show didn't deviate from the designs really, but it still felt like it "lost" a bit of "charm" due to the smooth computer animations and rendering.

I think it's a pretty fair middle ground between the original style and the one used for that final season. I did, however, appreciate that last season moving Jubilee a bit towards her Generation X look.
Also, shoddy animation aside, I think "The Fifth Horseman", "Descent", and "Graduation Day" were pretty OK episodes. Could they have stood to use a bit more polish? Sure, but it was as good as it was going to get that season. Unless we count "The Phalanx Covenant" as part of that season.

I think the only unrealistic thing here is Elisabeth and Scott being the ones at the console. Where the hell is Bobby? He'd be all over that shit.

I think the picture is more about the X-Men in the 90s in general, but you never saw the episode "Cold Comfort"? Bobby was pretty much the focus in that one. Unless you mean he wasn't part of the main cast, then yes, you're right, but neither was Elisabeth.
Either way, it's a funny picture, I think. I'm imagining Hank being his nerdy self cooped up in his room with a book while Xavier's downstairs in the den.

This almost reads backwards. Due to advancement in technologies, they could 100% re-create it if they wanted. That's not what I'm saying though.
It just..... doesn't look as great, IMO, as the original did. Not because of "smoother" whatever. Just don't like the way the new ones look compared to the original. I will try to get some good comparison screenshots or something, later. it's just "off" for me.

I reserve all judgement until I see it in motion, anyways.
And yes, of course they could use tech/AI/whatever to make it look exactly like the original... but they won't, and I know that.
This is gonna bomb hard. Not enough race swapping to float nowadays.

So apparently Madeline Pryor as the Goblin Queen is going to be part of the X-Men '97 Funko Pop toys, leading to speculation about her involvement in the show and whether or not a version of Inferno is going to be adapted.
