All associated MCU material (comics) are meant to be canon. There's a series that pretty much introduces the Leader after his accident in Incredible Hulk. This is before Whedon took the helm, though, so I don't know if he'll consider the books tied to the movies.

And where the fuck is Luke Cage? How can you have spider-man on the team without Luke Cage? Their chemistry together has been the best part of spider-man joining the avengers.

I like Greg Land's Iron Man redesign. Cap is alright as well, being that their are shades of the movie attire in there, which I liked a lot.

http://www.newsarama.com/comics/marvel-now-thunderbolts-red-hulk.html

With the news of the December-debuting Marvel NOW! Thunderbolts still fresh — starring Red Hulk, Punisher, Elektra, Venom and Deadpool — Newsarama now brings you the first interview with series writer Daniel Way on the book.

Way makes it clear that it's not a black ops team like Secret Avengers or Uncanny X-Force — being led by Red Hulk might make that tricky — and that instead the Thunderbolts will be hitting their targets in the "loudest way possible." Series editor Jordan D. White told us earlier that this incarnation of Thunderbolts is not a government-sponsored team; as Way puts it, "They are the consequence of evil deeds, pure and simple."

The writer also discussed re-teaming with Preacher artist Steve Dillon, who he previously worked with on Wolverine: Origins, Supreme Power: Nighthawk and Bullseye: Greatest Hits; plus detailed his thoughts on each of the five initial team members — including Deadpool, who Way's sticking with after wrapping his four-year run on the character's solo ongoing series in October.

Newsarama: Daniel, Thunderbolts is a series with a very unique place within both Marvel and the comic book industry in general. It's one of the few new series from its era that's really endured, and though it's been characterized by frequent overhaul, it's usually retained a recognizable central concept. What was attractive to you about Thunderbolts? And though it looks like you're definitely going in a different direction, what would fans of past runs on the book find familiar with what you're doing?

Daniel Way: I can't help but think the reason this title has endured while others from that era haven't is because of the incredible work that [Kurt] Busiek and [Mark] Bagley did when the title was first launched. I think comics fandom is still gasping from that particular gut-punch — last page of the first issue, everything you thought you knew flew right out the window.

It's that sense of danger, of volatility, that I'm trying to preserve with my take on the series. In addition, I really enjoyed the political themes introduced by Warren Ellis, so that will also be an aspect with which fans (especially recent fans) will be familiar.

Nrama: It looks like the most prominent difference from most past Thunderbolts incarnations is that while everyone in this group can certainly be considered antiheroes, they're not villains, and are in fact being led/gathered by an Avenger. So, presumably, their goals are very different than past Thunderbolt squads — so what's their mission statement? It sounds sort of like an X-Force-type team, without being mutant-centric. What threats are they uniquely suited to take on? And, to cram one more question into this paragraph, will this be an uneasy team dynamic as one might expect, or will they find that they actually work together quite well?

Way: Yes; this is not "another X-Force." This is also not a covert ops team. When the Thunderbolts hit a target, they'll do so in the loudest way possible. Separately, on their own, these characters were waging open-ended campaigns. Why were they on their own? Why has no one stepped in to help them? Would not the world be a better place if organized crime was eliminated, or The Hand summarily wiped out?

Whether due to indifference, moral quandary or political agenda, there are pockets of infection throughout the MU that have been allowed to fester and grow. This team of Thunderbolts exists to cut out that infection, wherever it is found. They do not recognize boundaries or borders, be they moral, political or geographical. They can and will strike anyone, at any time, without warning. They are the consequence of evil deeds, pure and simple.

Nrama: You're certainly familiar with artist Steve Dillon (and he's certainly familiar with drawing the Punisher) — what do you think makes him the right choice for Thunderbolts, and is your approach to this series any different than your past collaborations with him?

Way: Well, this is definitely a "bigger" book... I mean, once you throw Red Hulk into the mix, the scale automatically goes through the roof. This team doesn't tackle small problems, and it doesn't provide discreet solutions.

What I've asked Steve to do — and which he's done, incredibly — is complement the global scale of this series. We all know that, of the small group of artists who can do it at all, Steve Dillon is one of the best there is at communicating nuance and human emotion through his artwork and visual storytelling. What we tend to forget is that this guy cut his teeth doing some of the most bombastic comics ever in 2000 AD and Warrior. What you're going to see in this new series is an amalgamation of these styles; a perfect storm of shock and awe. As comics fans, we're used to seeing insane, widescreen destruction. With Steve, you'll feel it.

Nrama: Let's look at the team members individually. At the forefront is the Red Hulk, which in some ways seems like a no-brainer — back when the Thunderbolts first debuted in the '90s, people guessed that Thunderbolt Ross might have something to do with it, and now he finally does. What do you like about the character, and since he's the leader of the team (and this looks to be the main series featuring the character thus far in the Marvel NOW! era), is it fair to say that he's the de facto main character?

Way: Red Hulk is the metaphorical 800-pound gorilla in this situation. He's also a former general with decades of battlefield experience. Only Red Hulk has the capacity to lead this team, and only Thunderbolt Ross has the clarity of vision to effectively deploy them.

Nrama: Deadpool is in the book, certainly good news for fans of your run on the character's solo book. What aspects of the character are you looking to explore that you couldn't in his own series? And since he's part of the seemingly similarly structured Uncanny X-Force series, would you say he'll be filling a similar niche in this book as he does there?

Way: Though he's not a mutant, Deadpool is a member of X-Force for one simple reason: He's a killer. That's not, however, why he's a member of the Thunderbolts. Red Hulk has plenty of killers, already — what he doesn't have is someone versed in non-linear tactics. Red Hulk — Ross — knows every play in the book but what Deadpool knows isn't in the book.

That being said, Deadpool does kill a whole lotta people in this series

Nrama: Venom is also in another team book right now, Secret Avengers. Is his playing the same type of role in this book? And though the Venom you wrote back in the 2003 series is very, very different from where the character is now, do you see anything in common with what you did then and what you're doing now?

Way: The only common thread in those two series is that the symbiote is a character separate from the host, and that is definitely something that I'll be using.

Previously, Flash Thompson was given an incredible weapon to use... and was then told not to use it to its full potential. This was not acceptable to Flash or the symbiote. Within the Thunderbolts camp, however, there are no such restrictions.

Nrama: Elektra is an intriguing choice; she hasn't been seen much in the past couple of years, and isn't known for being a team player. What can you share at this point about her motivations, and how she'll fit in with the rest of the group?

Way: Well, none of these characters are really "team players" but Elektra is definitely a standout in this regard. Elektra remains on the same path she set upon when her father was murdered, the same path that has led her time and again to her own death. Her motivation is to reach the end of that path... alive. And for that, experience has taught her, she'll need allies.

Nrama: Then finally, the biggest x-factor, so to speak, is Punisher. Not only is he definitely known as a solo act, Red Hulk's Avengers teammates are declaring war on him starting in October with the War Zone miniseries. What's exciting to you about placing Punisher in a group dynamic?

Way: Punisher's involvement — why Red Hulk wants him on the team — is actually an important plot thread in this series. After all, he's the one character on the team without any superhuman or supernatural powers. He's just a man, committed fully to a course of action that will surely lead to death and failure... and yet, he soldiers on. Does this make Punisher less human, or more? Suffice it to say that "savage" is a term never far from Thunderbolt Ross' mind.

I thought Red Hulk was cool until his identity was revealed (cop out, imo, same with Red She-Hulk - which now that I look back should have been obvious). He'll probably be more fun in the upcoming cartoon series which actually sounds okay.

And since he is Thunderbolt Ross-

WAIT!: Thunderbolt General Ross in the Thunderbolts, very cute Marvel, I just now got that.

...Anyway, since he is Ross, they should keep his goatee and make it black in Hulk form to make him more than a palette swap character. A Hulk with a goatee would look cool to me.

Edit: All Thor 2 updates/analysis/media will now be in its own thread now that some assets are out.

Why is Spiderman/Venom weilding an ingram?

Because it's *Flash Thompson* (his high school bully/big Spider-Man supporter) and he was in the army, but lost his legs... so they have some secret program where they gave him the Venom suit to do missions for them (before him joining Thunderbolts)

Nowhere Man
09-12-2012, 09:56 PM
*Thompson

But yeah, that's pretty much what's going on with Venom these days. I think Eddie Brock is currently bonded to the Toxin symbiote, who was spawned off of Carnage. So Brock is now running around in the first suit's grandkid.

Nowhere Man

I don't think they ever actually said what happened to him. Presumably, either Blackheart killed him in order to separate the symbiote from him (since the next time Toxin showed up, Blackheart was trying to make clones of the symbiote for some reason or another), or he'll show up at some point to try and take the symbiote back from Brock.

when red hulk debuted he trashed the avengers, the watcher, the hulk and others until his identity was revealed.. so he was written as a villain and was even seen as such when he first joined the avengers

Noone really knows that its flash in the symbiot... Remember Mac Gargen? He was in no way ever a hero in any sense and he wore the venom symbiot for a long time. So yes the symbiot was once a major villain.

Punisher fights with heros and villains. say what you want in terms of his motives and his moral ground, in the eyes of the public and other heros, hes a villain if not terrorist.... same goes for deadpool for the most part.

So I'm looking for some recommendations for something new to read.

A bit of background here...

I read comics as a kid. Loved them. Then for whatever reason I just sort of stopped. I think the last big thing I read as a kid was the Infinity Gauntlet shit. Dopplegangers, etc.

As an 'adult' I've read a few things that I thoroughly have enjoyed. 100 Bullets, Watchmen, Civil War (meh), World War Hulk (meh), but nothing consistent. The Walking Dead books were good too.

Fast forward to today. I recently have gone on something of a reading binge because of the Marvel app on my ipad. They gave away some free teaser issues, and in turn I burned through Runaways (loved it, especially the first run) and just caught up with AvX. So I'm looking for something else to read, and I figure I'd ask you guys for some ideas.

To Miotch:

Personally I have LOVED reading Ed Brubakers 1-25 of Captain America and can direct you to torrent or can help you get digital copies....OR you can by the run in hardback form on Amazon.

If you don't like Captain America I can give other suggestions.

here is the amazon link to the ed brubaker captain america book: http://www.amazon.com/Captain-America-Omnibus-Vol-1/dp/0785128662/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1347913699&sr=8-2&keywords=ed+brubaker+captain+america

(I just started the Daredevil 2011 run and is up to the 18th issue coming out this week...so far so good but I am too new to it to call it an official recommendation)

Just so I understand this, the book falls outside of the normal 'marvel timeline', correct? Because if not, that's a shit load of characters they're going to kill off.

Also, X-23 pretty much has to win this.

Fignuts
09-17-2012, 10:44 PM
I don't think it does.

I'm sure X-23 will be the main character, and one of the top competitors, but she's not quite wolverine. Hell, Hazmat could probably slow her down quite a bit, if not outright killing her.

Blitz

Go Darkhawk.

Fignuts
09-17-2012, 11:26 PM
I don't even know who most of those characters are. Recognize darkhawk, x-23, and hazmat.

Also, I thought darkhawk was an adult. And a cosmic assassin, or at least rebelled against his fellow cosmic assassins.

Lock Jaw

I don't really know anything about it.... but... is it confirmed that they are going to be killing each other? I mean, you can have a series have a cover that is an "homage" to Battle Royale without meaning that the series is actually about them killing each other.

Clearly, there's a purpose to us putting him in the end of that movie. We do have plans for him[Thanos]. [...] I wouldn't say we ever feel the need to rush anything one way or the other. We succeeded in Phase One because we stuck to our guns and stuck to the plan. That plan took place over many, many years and it ultimately paid off. I see Phase Two unfolding in the same way of us taking our time, us doing what's right for each individual movie, while folding in elements that will not only build up to the culmination of Phase Two, but even Phase Three.

SKYE | This late-20s woman sounds like a dream: fun, smart, caring and confident – with an ability to get the upper hand by using her wit and charm.

AGENT GRANT WARD | Quite the physical specimen and “cool under fire,” he sometimes botches interpersonal relations. He’s a quiet one with a bit of a temper, but he’s the kind of guy that grows on you.

AGENT ALTHEA RICE | Also known as “The Calvary,” this hard-core soldier has crazy skills when it comes to weapons and being a pilot. But her experiences have left her very quiet and a little damaged.

AGENT LEO FITZ and AGENT JEMMA SIMMONS | These two came through training together and still choose to spend most of their time in each other’s company. Their sibling-like relationship is reinforced by their shared nerd tendencies – she deals with biology and chemistry, he’s a whiz at the technical side of weaponry.

The Walking Dead recurring player Michael Rooker, who previously appeared in writer-director James Gunn's Super and Slither, says he wants to play Rocket Raccoon in the upcoming Marvel movie: I love raccoons. Raccoons are my friends (Laughs)!...Oh, yeah. Most certainly. I know that James Gunn is doing it. He is directing it, and he is re-writing it. He is a very loyal director. He is a very loyal writer, when it comes to working with people that he knows and loves. He really appreciates the efforts that each actor puts into these roles. And I would be very honored and pleased to work with James Gunn again... Whether it will happen or not, I don't know. But he is a dynamite guy, and we have remained friends ever since we worked together on Slither.

He also notes that he has particular experience relevant to the role of Rocket Raccoon, as he did motion capture work for Call of Duty: Black Ops 2. More at the link, including his call for fans to campaign for him to get the role.

Dan Slott has been incredibly good on Spider-Man, but after reading up on what they're going to do with it, I have no interest whatsoever in a "dark and gritty" Spider-Man. I read Spidey because he's a fun, wise-cracking smartass who's able to grin and bear it even through the worst of times, not because he's fucking Batman with web-shooters.

Also, ten bucks says the whole thing that turns him into a dark and violent anti-hero is that somebody kills Mary Jane. That's pretty much the only thing they haven't done to him yet.

Marvel pussed out on the scarlet witch. Still pissed they redeemed her, when she could have been a great new addition to the Avengers rogues gallery.

Yeah, Magneto flipped because marvel pussed out on him too.

New x-men? Grant Morrison? Epic destruction of New York that was so awesome that it was emulated in X-men 3: Last Stand?

Far too bold for Quesada, apparently.

Love marvel, and will always prefer it over DC, but they need to grow a set, ffs.

These cartoons will debut next Summer and expand on the 'Disney-verse' started in Ultimate Spider-Man. I'm only now starting to accept USM, but AA will be produced by Man of Action (Ben 10), and Paul Dini is working on HAoS. That's some quality staff there.

Clark Gregg, everybody's favorite SHILD agent, will be in the pilot of the SHIELD TV series. Whether this retcons his death or will be a flashback is not revealed. He is currently playing an undercover agent in USM.

Doesn't even have to be part of any "Phase". Could just be a standalone with no references or ties to the larger universe. Then, only if it is successful, they can bring in Ant-Man into the bigger picture.

I am assuming that Hank Pym/Ant-Man will be making his debut slowly over the course of the next few films or possibly just be in Avengers 2. Giving people a reason to see his stand alone movie is key. Ant-Man is a great character to us, who know him and what he has done...But to an average movie-goer they will need some reassurance this isn't a spoof hero flick due to the corny name.

I assume he will show up as a scientist if Thor ventures to earth in the new film and maybe the same in Cap 2 and definately see an appearance if not a co-starring role in Avengers 2.

Any leads on who is playing Hank? And please don't say Ryan Reynolds.

Lock Jaw
10-15-2012, 07:59 PM
Last I heard, Hank Pym wasn't even the main character. He was gonna be in it in flashbacks, but Ant-Man would be either Scott Lang or Eric O'Grady.

http://populationgo.com/post/33533018982/coulson-lives-as-the-main-character-of-whedons

Fan favourite character, Agent Phil Coulson, has been revealed as the main character of Joss Whedon’s SHIELD television series at NYCC today.
During the Marvel TV Panel, Clark Gregg himself was present as a memorial video was shown. However, the video soon changed to Joss Whedon and Kevin Fiege, who announced that Coulson will be headlining the SHIELD show, and the show was developed with that in mind since the beginning.
How Coulson will return to the screen has yet to be revealed, though Gregg himself suggested a few theories himself—returning as the Vision as some websites have speculated, or the use of a Life Model Decoy or the Tesseract to explain his death in The Avengers.

Ultron for phase 3 then, one would assume.

Kalyx triaD
10-16-2012, 04:16 AM
If Coulson returns with the explanation of being Vision, or having used a LMD, this would point to Ultron as a Phase Three villain, especially since Hank Pym may debut in that era of the MCU.

This is assuming Marvel thought that far ahead, but it sorta lines up.

We're talking a movie series getting into 10+ years of length at Phase Three. I'm thinking it'll be reboot/recast city after Avengers 2.

And to be honest, I rather Phase 3 be the final act of the greatest experiment in comic book movies (nay, action movies in general), and going out with Avengers 3: Civil War. Ultron's cool but seriously, nothing can be as epic as that.

And into the future, the next step is universal crossovers. Avengers/JLA 2021?

Fignuts
10-16-2012, 04:34 AM
Ultron is the penultimate villain, for the avengers. More so than even Thanos, despite his greater power.

Speaking as someone who has read EVERY issue of avengers ever, it has to end with him. Civil War was epic, but Avengers fans know that whenever Ultron shows up...hell, when even his name is mentioned, the entire atmosphere of the story changes. It's unexplainable really, but an Ultron story in Avengers just has a different feel from everything else. It's a always a total "shit just got real" moment whenever he shows up, and not even the civil war concept can match it, imo.

With the Young Justice episode posted a while back I was inspired by that and the posting of the Little League comics to maybe begin posting embeds of entire episodes of Marvel/DC 'toons from a very reliable site I've been using for a while now. Ming-Na Wen, formerly from ER and Stargate Universe, will play a "soulful" and "damaged" pilot named Melinda May in Joss Whedon's new S.H.I.E.L.D. TV show. Melinda May is described as "an ace pilot, a weapons expert and a soldier who can - and has - gone beyond the call of duty." And apparently she's the character who was originally named Special Agent Althea Rice, aka the Cavalry, in the first casting breakdown. Also, judging from some of the reports out there, it sounds like the late Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) might only be in the show's pilot, not an ongoing character.
