To be fair, the Fantastic Four has been a major part of the Marvel Universe for so long, it's not like they'll be this way forever. I give it a year, two at the most, before the Human Torch comes back somehow and the Future Foundation becomes the Fab 4 again.

A year at most, I doubt they'll skip a chance to have issue 600. Unless they ignore the new numbering for some reason and go back to 589.

So, I haven't read the story - BUT is there any possibility his "death" could be leading into the big Fear event? Like, his fear is that the F4 don't need him, and move on blah blah blah, and their fear is his death? Again, not sure how recent it is, but if we never saw him die - is it feasible?

If it is, I'll pick up the trades...

I think the Thor movie is the one I'm going to enjoy the most this summer.

When the release schedule was originally set I thought that Green Lantern and Captain America would have caught my attention, but, I have to say, what I've seen of Thor has looked very good so far.

Probably a bit unfair on the other two till we see the final trailers though.

Yes, basically.

I really love every bit of news that comes out about Captain America. Usually these things tend to sound worse and worse, but this keeps getting better and better.

There hasn't been much talk about it in here, but I'm thrilled about Alan Silvestri doing the music.
He just has the perfect style. When they announced this, I hoped the tone of the movie would be a mix of Raiders, The Rocketeer, and Back to the Future.
Seems like everything is working towards that.

I guess my only hope I'm still not sure on is whether or not they will stick to practical action/stunts/effects for the most part.
I'd rather see real, rough action like Raiders of the Lost Ark. It just suits the character better, and most importantly, the time period. Something about using a boatload of CGI in a movie set in WW2 just magnifies the shittiness of it. I know there will obviously be some CGI, but hopefully not uneeded amounts.

Joe Johnston seems pretty good about that though. I was really pleased with the use of makeup and practical effects in The Wolfman.

The Avengers:

Before The Trailer (via Screenrant) tracked down the complete information for the upcoming New Mexico casting call. The interesting part is this description of the story:

"A superhero team called 'The Avengers' do battle against two separate alien extraterrestrial humanoid life forms. The Avengers are a superhero team, consisting of a group of Marvel Comics heroes aka 'Earth’s Mightiest Heroes'. The aliens that The Avengers will fight are called 'The Kree' and 'Skrulls'. These two extraterrestrial races become embroiled in a war for ages that ultimately makes its way to Earth, and the Avengers unite to intervene with all their power and might combined."

David Slade, who directed 30 Days of Night (2007) and The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (2010) will direct a new Daredevil film for 20th Century Fox. Slade had been one of the finalists to direct the new Wolverine movie, but lost out to Darren Aronofsky.

According to Variety, the new Daredevil movie won’t be a rehash of the rather pitiful 2003 Fox Daredevil epic that wasted the talents of a great cast that included Ben Affleck, Colin Farrell, Jennifer Garner, Jon Favreau, and Joey Pants (Joe Pantoliano). Certainly there are plenty of Daredevil comic book sagas that could translate well to the screen given the right creative team. No writers or other members of the creative were announced except for producer Peter Chernin.

The 2003 Daredevil movie, which was directed by Mark Steven Johnson, cost $78 million and earned just $102 million domestically, which means it didn’t make money for the studio. Still, it earned nearly $80 million overseas, so it probably came close to breaking even—and with Marvel’s “use it or lose it” clauses in its movie rights deals, Fox has evidently decided to role the dice again for a second Daredevil film rather than let the rights lapse back to rival Marvel/Disney.

In a blow to Fox’s Wolverine sequel top tier director Darren Aronofsky has bowed out of the production. A significant part of the X-Men Origins: Wolverine sequel, which will be called simply The Wolverine, would have been shot overseas, most of it in Japan. In a statement announcing his intention to leave the project Aronofsky said: “It became clear to me that the production of The Wolverine would keep me out of the country for almost a year. I was not comfortable being away from my family for that length of time.”

According to Deadline, Aronofsky’s breakup with actress Rachel Weisz and custody issues concerning their son are behind his decision to leave the project, which has nothing to do with the script by Christopher McQuarrie. In his statement Aronofsky expressed his disappointment, “I am sad that I won’t be able to see the project through, as it is a terrific script and I was very much looking forward to working with my friend Hugh Jackman again.”

In its statement Fox expressed “understanding and respect” for Aronofsky’s decision. The studio also noted that “Hugh Jackman and Fox both remain fully committed to making The Wolverine. We will regroup and move forward aggressively.”

The project has not yet officially been greenlit, but the start of filming had already been postponed from this spring due to Jackman’s promotional schedule for Real Steel and the earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

Yeah, that was announced about a year ago. In fact, the Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon is the main reason why The Spectacular Spider-Man got canceled, to make room for the new one (and that's also why I will probably not watch the new one, because SSM is one of my favorite superhero shows ever and I'm still bitter)

Yeah, that annoys me. Not because it ruins the number run but it waters down the "anniversary" issues and ensures them as nothing but money grabbing experiments with reprints in the back.

If the story is good, I'll get the trade for almost half the price from amazon, but I'm not supporting the single/monthly book.

If it's any consolation, the Ultimate Spider-Man has really slick animation and looks good. I get the vibe of the Fox Kids 'toon, except with modern quality animation. The models return to realistic style, and it overall seems darker (visually) than the last few Marvel toons released.

This probably doesn't mend the tragic loss of Spectacular Spidey, which I immensely enjoyed catching up on Netflix, but it looks like Ultimate can service us well.

If I could find clean footage I'll post it.

Treatment for X4 sent to Fox. Fox likes it. Story leads to a potential X5.

Wolverine still trucking on, curiously called "Hugh Jackman's Wolverine" by producer Laurie Donner. Just her way of calling it, I'm sure.

Deadpool still happening, Ryan still attached.

Overall Fox has long term plans for Marvel's mutant sandbox.

Avengers is filming... right now.

Tom Hiddleston was signed to play Loki in 5 Marvel films. As usual this deals don't specify which film, so Loki could pop up in Iron Man 3 or Avengers 2 if it gets that far.

I think these deals are so open to give writers and producers a larger pool of characters played by their legacy actors when coming up with new movies.

thor was really good. went to a preview screening a couple nights ago. i actually enjoyed it a lot more than i thought i was going to. the tone was bang on. hemsworth did a good job of transitioning the character from brash and arrogant to benevolent and heroic. natalie portman is probably the weakest choice cast-wise, because for all her trumpeting about preparing for the role by looking at real-life female scientists and their struggle to be heard and taken seriously, she kind of comes off a bit schoolgirlish throughout, all giggles and embarrassed silence around buff people claiming to be gods. guy that plays heimdall is fantastic. not a huge role but a pivotal one, and he is awesome in it. everyone else was generally pretty good too. agent coulson was, as always, a treat (upon seeing the destroyer for the first time: "is that one of stark's?") - and the appearance of hawkeye was really well done. it hints at who you'll see before you see them, but for anyone who's read the comics it's immediately obvious, and a nice set-up for a couple films down the road.

overall though, really strong outing from marvel. definitely not the runt of the litter as predicted. go check it out feeling good about the prospect guys, because it's actually a pleasantly surprising film.

They did the fantastic four themselves justice. Well, Jessica Alba as invisible woman is debatable I suppose, but she was passable in my opinion. Silver Surfer was done well. The only problems were Dr. Doom and Galactus. Making Galactus a cloud, was just lazy. And Dr. Doom was more of a whiny douchebag, than the regal, intimidating villain he is supposed to be.

I'll admit that I was skeptical about FF because having Spidey on the team was an obvious marketing ploy to get people to read it (although it does make sense in-character, what with him and Torch being best friends), but damn if I'm not hooked on it. Crazy super-science plots, hilarious dialogue, and I have to admit, my new favorite team costumes ever.

Fignuts
05-22-2011, 10:28 PM
Everything about it is fantastic. I've never really even liked FF that much, but this is great.

And honestly, ever since spider-man joined the new avengers, I've aactually preferred him as a team player, rather than as a solo act. With every team he joins, he just has brilliant chemistry with the other characters. He's good in his own book, but he is so much more entertaining when he has other people to play off of. Can't tell you how many times I've laughed out loud at some of his moments in all these books.

And yeah, the new uniforms are badass. I thought they were cool even when they were revealed and everyone was "BAAAAAAAWWWW"ing about it.

Personally, I'm a fan of new ideas, and making bold moves. That is probably why I like Grant Morrison. Can't stand these people who say crap like, "Well if he was a good writer he wouldn't need to change things. He could just write good stories with what he's got." That's bullshit. I don't care how good a writer is, these properties have been around since the 60's and there is only so much you can do, before you need to make some bold changes to allow fresh, new stories to be told.

I like things like New X-men, and One More Day(The idea of it anyways, not the execution.)

Fignuts
05-22-2011, 10:31 PM
Yeah, and I honestly don't care if spidey joining was a marketing decision, because he's always been really tight with the FF, not just Johnny. And he's something of a scientist himself, so it works on that level as well.

Feel like it would be really really hard to make x-23 work on film.

Kalyx triaD
05-23-2011, 03:24 AM
On the contrary, I find her to be one of the most movie-friendly characters in Marvel's library.

Go with my Hudgens casting and you expand the age demo to net tweeners, tapping Twilight's target audience. Girls will be lured in, guys think she's hot. She'd fit with the possibility of X4 being youth oriented. Can give Hugh Jackman a new angle to work with (Logan as father figure).

Go with Alexander and you increase the 'sexiness', and present women with their own 'Wolverine'. She'd bring in those who enjoyed her in Thor, and she can promote the movie in hound-dog circles (Maxim, etc). Could interact with Jackman on a closer level (sibling, cousin), or outright be the 'feral character' if Wolverine doesn't make the movie.

Then there's the X-movies lacking a marketable action girl in general. It won't be Rogue.

Fignuts
05-23-2011, 03:43 AM
Not really talking about marketability.

Took a lot of writing and complex stories took make x-23 a respectable character and not a shameless wolverine clone. Just don't think you can fit that into a movie. Seems like she would inevitably seen as a cheap cash in by critics.

Would be a legit complaint. I'm sure the action scenes would be fun, but I just can't see how they could avoid her being a shallow character given the time constraints of a movie.

As a fan of the character, I wouldn't like it. Would probably end up being like deadpool in origins, albeit to a lesser extent.

Rogue in X1 was essentially a prototype of the character without them knowing it. Even as far as her relationship with Logan goes.

Do that again, add more depth and stakes, and killer fight scenes, and I'm happy.

Stan Lee talks about his cameo work, and his Amazing Spider-Man cameo scene (spoilers):

Love the guy.

I feel like "They're having sex with the corpse of the baby llama" sums up my feelings toward Garth Ennis completely.

Well brightest day was stupid.

I think you probably meant to put that in the DC thread, but... I kind of liked Brightest Day. I wouldn't call it great, but it was decent.

I liked Justice League: Generation Lost better though.

What is the source of power that Fury shows off?

A Cosmic Cube. Pretty sure it will be a part of the plot in Captain America.

Wasn't it the cube that they had taken from the ice giants?

Fignuts

I don't think so. That cube was bigger. Also, they implied that they had acquired the object well before the events of the movie.

I thought it was the cube that the red skull is always running around with

So... First Class kind of blew my mind. Was fully expecting to hate it, but it was way better than it had any right to be. Fassbender was incredible and - God help me - I was actually interested in Havok for the first time in my life.

Plus, the Hugh Jackman and Rebecca Romijn cameos were a nice touch. Jackman's especially was fantastic.

Both Fear Itself and Flashpoint are kind of boring so far. Just no real interesting hook.
