Me too! Damon is one of my favorite players but unfortunately he's gonna kinda have to get used to being benched and taken out of the lineup. With Giambi coming back and DHing there's really no place for him except for a back up center fielder/Left Fielder/ pinch hitter.
Lot of money for a 4th outfielder...
makes the JD Drew signing not look so bad :)
Side note: anyones thoughts on the report that Steinbrenner is very sick... that an old friend came to visit him and all he kept saying was "nice to see you" or something like that...
Yes network being sold, 1.2billion dollar ball park, lots of money in players like Damon and Giambi...
me, I think A-rod opts out and they let him go, they try to dump Damon and have a rebuilding year, where they try and move old expensive guys for prospects and then once the YES deal is done, come back strong with a big free agent signing like Santata. in 2008/09. to open the new ball park.

I would love for the Jays to make it. After the Yanks they are my 2nd favorite team from Childhood up, but its hard rooting for a team thats contending with your boys. But it would be nice to see some change, and if they pass Yanks, Maybe they will do what I want and ditch the age for a rebuilding year. Overhaul the entire organization.

Yeah, I agree he pitched pretty bad. But this is his first game back to the MLB. And I think Hughes lost it in the fifth not the sixth. He's gonna be back to his normal self by his second or third start .
Hopefully the Tribe makes the wildcard over the Yankees. They're less scary in the playoffs.
Not with the way they've been playing in the playoffs for the past 3 years they aren't. I kinda wish Cleveland and Detroit can go to the playoffs. If we take the AL East which we still do have a slim chance to do. I can see both the Tigers and Indians going.

I dunno, because not too many people are rooting for him. Sure Bud should be more impartial, but it's tough when it's a guy like Bonds. The Seattle announcers sounded disappointed when it happened. (I was watching the RedSox/Mariners at the time) The fans in Seattle mostly boo'ed the news, etc.
Anyway, now the big hurrah isn't the chase for 755, but the chase for 756

Well I'm personally against the authoritarian presumption of guilt in baseball these days and despite Bonds' character issues it's never been proven that he's a cheater so I'm gonna enjoy watching the most recognizable record in North American sports get broken while everybody else cries foul.
The other "issue" is baseball never had any rules against steroids, and knew something was wrong during the McGuire/Sosa year and did nothing because they needed the press.
Chris Rock was on HBO with Costas and had some good lines. "Can you get a ticket for speeding last week? no" "Can you commit adultry on your girlfriend, no, there is no such law you'd be break" and then to costas "If you found out (I forgot the name he used of a sports announcer) was getting 20mil more then you, wouldn't you take a pill" and Costas "damn right I would".
So, as much as I'm not a Barry Bonds fan, you have to blame baseball as much if not more then the players involved.

Taking all those issues away, he's a jerk, he's arrogant and I won't be rooting for him ever. If tomorrow he was cleared of any and all wrongdoings in regard to supplements, I'd just have one less thing to hold against him, but I'd not like him. LOL. Let's for one moment pretend that Barry Bonds is 100% innocent and the only thing he did wrong was associate with bad people. Nobody accused Mike Schmidt and Johnny Bench of betting on baseball just because they associated with Pete Rose. Look back at everything Bonds has gone through in the last few years and tell me that's fair. He might be a jerk but he's still human and I don't care how hard you try there is no way to turn off all of this and focus on baseball.
I just don't see why we have to convict him without proof of any wrongdoings. If he did cheat and we find out he did, then he can be punished. It's a whole lot easier to go from innocent to guilty based on proof than guilty to innocent based on a lack of proof.

From Game of Shadows:
"I never saw a teammate care about him," his coach, the late Jim Brock, told Sports Illustrated in 1990. "Part of it would be his being rude, inconsiderate, and self-centered. He bragged about the money he had turned down, and he popped off about his Dad. I don't think he ever figured out what to do to get people to like him."
Brock was considered tough, demanding, and distant. But even he found himself making a different set of rules for Bonds, excusing his objectionable behavior because of his tremendous talent. The coddling started from the day Bonds arrived on campus driving a new Pontiac Trans Am. When his teammates first saw the shiny black car, it was parked in the coach's parking space.
In 1984, Bonds and some teammates were caught breaking curfew, and Bonds mouthed off when the coach confronted them. Momentarily pushed past his limit, Brock blew up and kicked Bonds off the team. After he calmed down, the coach told his players he had suspended Bonds and asked them to vote on whether to let him return; Brock was confident they would want their best player back. But Bonds was so unpopular that his teammates voted to kick him off the team for good.
---------------
Although Bonds eventually developed into an outstanding player in Pittsburgh, the only player in the club's history to win two National League MVP awards, the fans came to regard him as greedy, unpleasant, and a choke artist. [...] Because of his complaints about money and his demands to be traded, the Pittsburgh writers awarded Bonds their "MDP" award, for "Most Despised Pirate."
By the time Bonds got to San Francisco, people close to him swore he would deliberately say horrible things to the press, hoping to provoke outrage and kick up his game a notch. "My grandmother wants me to get her some wheelchair that drives like a car," he told The New York Times Magazine in one such over-the-top remark. "Why do I need to get her some wheelchair when she's gonna die anyway?" Starting with Spring Training with the Pirates in 1990, Bonds began telling writers and photographers to stay out of his face, and he used the same line with autograph-seeking fans.
Bonds was loosening up when he noticed two TV cameramen and a freelance photographer preparing to take his picture. Bonds was friendly with the still photographer, but the TV crews made him agitated. "Get out of my face!" he shouted, and brandished a ball as though he was going to throw it at him.
The altercation brought over the Pirates' press secretary, Jim Lachima, who tried to calm the angry star. "I'll make my own rules around here!" Bonds shouted, as the TV crews videotaped the action.
---------------
The deportment issues that Magowan had blamed on Pittsburgh's insensitivity flared soon after Bonds joined the team. Early in his first season with the club, Bonds walked into a meeting of Giants pitchers and began pointing at the ones he had tagged for home runs, saying, "I got you, and I got you, and you."
The owner would call Giants equipment manager Mike Murphy and tell him he wanted Bonds to sign some balls. According to the source, Murphy would relay the message to Bonds, but the star would say, "I ain't gonna sign no fucking balls."
----------
Meanwhile Bell (girlfriend) saw less of the sweet, engaging side of Bonds's personality. He became irritable, controlling, and verbally abusive. And after beginning his training with Anderson, his very appearance had changed: Bonds had bulked up so much that he seemed like a different man.
Bell blamed steroids for the ugly changes. He would reveal his use of drugs to her in early 2000, in what had started as a discussion of his elbow injury. Although Bonds didn't tell her where he got the drugs, she assumed they were administered by Anderson, whom she called his "paid friend." Bell had gotten to know Anderson during spring training. Every year Bonds rented a big house in a gated community in Scottsdale and Bell would come down for a week before Bonds's family arrived. Anderson stayed at the house, too. Bonds had become so rude that the only people willing to hang out with him were his employees, Bell said.
[...]
Bonds became more quick-tempered. When his anger flared now, he would grab her, stand close to her face, and whisper intimidating, hurtful things. He insisted on knowing where she was every hour of the day or night. If he couldn't find her, he would become enraged, and he told her he would kill her if he found she was seeing someone else.
Her social life evaporated. He called her so many times at work that her boss began to complain. And his rages became increasingly violent. One evening at her apartment, Kim's crabby neighbor began tapping on the ceiling, complaining about noise. Barry became angry. He stormed out into the hall, shouted, "Bitch, quit fuckin banging on the ceiling!" and kicked in her door, causing the neighbor to cry out in fright.
Bell used a telephone answering machine with a tape cassette; when one tape filled up, she'd toss it in a drawer and put in a new ne. She bgean saving the messages after a few bleak occasions on which Bonds threatened to kill her, remarking that if he dissapeared, no one would be able to prove he even knew her.
Some reflected Bonds's gentle side.
"Hey honey bunny, what's going on?" he said in one. "I haven't called you in a couple of days because I've been stuck with one car and I've been getting dropped off at the ballpark, and once I get to work, I don't think about calling nobody."
On other messages, Bonds could be heard amusing himself, bizarrely.
"Hey girl, what's up?" he said in one voice mail of this type. "Kim, hey--who is trying to get in on my shit? No nigga's trying to get into my shit. Don't have me kill a nigga. Ha ha ha ha--later girl. I'm on my way to San Diego, but I'm still getting the pussy, ha ha! Welcome to the penthouse!"
In some, Bonds sounded disturbingly like a stalker.
"Kim, I just paged you, now I'm pissed," he said in one message. "Fuck it, I don't give a fuck what, you better just find me. Well, why don't you just page me, however, I'll find you. But if I page you, your ass better drop every fucking thing and call me back!"
Once, Bonds left a flurry of messages over a 10-minute period.
"I'll find you," he said. "Now my blood temperature is rising."
Minutes after that, he called again: "Kim, it's 6:36. Now I done called three times. You, I mean you can't even explain it, mother. I'm pissed, 'cause I already called you at work, so you're not at fucking work either!"
And on yet another occasion, Bonds said, "If I don't know where you are, then a nigga's going to kill somebody, good-bye."

No1 will get to 300 in a while. Big Unit might but hes 16 away and is considering retiring. The next guys on the list have to have at least 10 plus wins in 5 years but they are older pitchers like Moyer and Smoltz. Pedro could do it but doubtful because he would have to win 91 more games in his career. Olney said the next logical guy to prolly do it is C.C. Sabithia.

500 HRs is not as big as a milestone as it was. Big Hurt and A-Rod did it this season and Thome is only 10 away from doing it and Manny is 14 I believe so its possible to have 2 more on the 500 list before the season is even over.

The Yankees are continuing to remake their bullpen. Mike Myers will be designated for assignment today and veteran righthander Jim Brower will be recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre

Yeah, I wanted him out just about as much as I want Farns out (And trust me that's a hell of a lot) My main objection to this was who we got in place of Myers. I think the main reason was because Brower can pitch consecutive days and multiple innings. Chamberlain can't do that right now and Ohlendorf just moved into the pen a while ago. I think Britton was just on the DL, not sure if he's still on it or if he just got off it or what. As for Ramirez I'm not sure. I think they just want to use Brower while he is hot; he's not young or anything but he's putting up solid numbers. I doubt he will be up here long though with those other guys waiting behind him.

Yankees did what they had to do since the break in beating up on the crap teams. Hopefully they can actually show something this month when they start facing playoff contenders. The offense has been ridiculous against the shitty pitching but now they have to face some decent ones.
Starting today they face Toronto (never easy for the Yanks), Cleveland, Baltimore (another team that gives Yankees trouble), Detroit, LAAA, Detroit and Boston. Rough stretch there.

We ain't on top yet. We're tied with the Tigers, and we've got the Indians going back and forth and Mariners with a possibility of making a run for either the wild card or the AL West.
However, the Red Sox visit the Angels so the Yankees might be able to gain maybe 2 games at the most if all goes well this week.

We don't need to be on top just yet. But I would think we'd be on top by early to mid September be that AL East or Wildcard. If Detroit loses tonight would that mean we'd have the AL Wild Card if the Indians don't lose? Right now Detroit is losing 4-2 in the fifth inning to the Devil Rays.

Edwar is lights out, Torre once again proved he sucks at managing a bullpen by letting 2 weeks go by in between his apperances. Nasty changeup.
Henn and Bean are mediocre arms. I don't know why they insist on calling them up all the time when there are more capable arms like Chris Britton, Edwar Ramirez and Joba Chamberalin down on the farm. Bean and Henn are older (actually, Henn is only like 25) so I guess they want to try and get something out of them before calling up the younger guys.

Unless Britton is still on the DL I don't see why they don't bring him in and Joba in.Replace Farns with Joba or Britton. I don't understand how 2 young pitchers like them can stay off the team but a worthless piece of shit like Kyle Farnsworth gets to stay on. It just doesn't make sense. I heard Joba is going to be called up soon don't know about Britton though.

I think it is that they are out of everything, and they know it, but Dunn has a ton of value because of what you said. A lot more GMs are seeing the Money ball value to players. Dunn will never be more valuable than he is now, and for a team that has no shot, he could pull in some good prospects. The guys is a lock for 100 walks, RBIs, Runs, and 40+ HRs. He is trash in the field, so to an AL team he is the Moneyball version of Big Papi.

All in all great game. Clemens did a masterful job at pitching and we got to see Joba pitch. He really impresses me. I think he's gonna do big things for us. 2 scoreless innings with 1 hit and only 2 walks isn't bad for a reliever on his first day in the MLB. I'll tell you one thing what I saw from him today made me proud that we didn't give him to Texas for Gagne.

Moneyball has never been about running. Stealing is a sin to Billy Beane. How much running has Giambi, Nick Swisher, Scott Hatteberg, or Kevin Youkilis done in their careers. Those are the big moneyball players. its all about OBP, patience at the plate, and keeping it cheap.

LOL. You clearly need to work on your reading comprehension. All "Moneyball" is about is finding inefficiencies in the market. That's it. OBP was heavily featured in the book because at that time, Beane was one of the only GMs who saw the value in OBP and therefore it was a good investment to go after high OBP players. But since the book has been released everybody and their mother knows how valuable OBP is, now high OBP players are getting the big contracts. More recently Beane has not been able to afford the high OBP guys so he has had to find other inefficiencies in the market, such as defense. Do you think he got Jay Payton for his .327 career OBP? Or Mark Kotsay for his .338? No, he got them because they gave him one of the best defensive outfields in the AL.
Moneyball is NOT an on-field strategy. I don't know why you dumbshits still don't get this. It has nothing to do with not bunting, not stealing, and trying to draw walks. ALL IT IS is a general managing strategy in which you try to go after players who's value aren't recognized by the Red Sox and Yankees and therefore can be signed for cheaper. The Red Sox have figured it out now, getting on base is the single most valuable offensive skill. Players the A's could've quietly signed in 01 or 02 are now getting multi-year contract offers from Theo Epstein. That's why they have to look to other areas where the big guys aren't looking, and right now it's defense.
Yes, I get that Billy Beane doesn't like to steal or bunt. But that doesn't have anything to do with Moneyball.
So now that I've explained it to you, maybe you can read it again and make some sense out of it this time, mmkay?

The guy was a 1st round pick, showed up in a book, so I msure more people know his name at least. The fact that he considered a bust until now also helps explain why he is unknown. I want to see him do it again next year.
Harang really came out last year, and is a legit Ace. I am nowhere near a Reds fan,but I really do like most of their players. They could be a great team with some Free Agent help.
I just went to a Norfolk Tides (Orioles) game when they played the reds AAA team (loisville). They have some nice AAA talent. Joey Vatto should be their starting 1Bman next year, and it would be nice if Jorge Cantu could regain his 100+ rbi form.

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Rick Ankiel returned to the major leagues Thursday — as an outfielder.
After flopping in his attempt to rejoin the St. Louis Cardinals as a pitcher, Ankiel rejoined the team Thursday and was in the starting lineup against San Diego. The timing of the callup coincided with utilityman Scott Spiezio going on major league baseball's restricted list.
Toting an equipment bag, Ankiel walked into a clubhouse that was closed to discuss the Spiezio matter.
"I set a goal for myself to get back here, so I feel good that I reached it," Ankiel said. "I'm looking forward to reaching my next goal, which is staying here."
Ankiel was hitting .267 with a Pacific Coast League-leading 32 homers and 89 RBIs in 102 games at Triple-A Memphis. He also struck out 90 times and had a .314 on-base percentage.
Batting second, Ankiel was to face Padres ace Chris Young.
"He goes up there and takes a whack," manager Tony La Russa said. "He's aggressive."
Ankiel made his major league pitching debut at age 19 in August 2000 when he faced the Expos in Montreal.
"I was young and I don't think I understood the magnitude of what was going on," he said. "That seems like a long time ago. It's ancient. I'm a different guy.
"I was so young then, I guess we all were."
The hard-throwing lefty won 11 games and struck out 194 in 175 innings as a 20-year-old rookie in 2000 and was a surprise pick to start the Cardinals' postseason opener that season against Atlanta. But he became the first major league pitcher to throw five wild pitches in one inning since 1890.
Ankiel threw nine wild pitches in four innings during the 2000 playoffs and never really was the same after that. He showed some promise at the plate in 2000, batting .250 with two home runs.
Now, the Cardinals want an extended period to gauge Ankiel's future, and expect that giving him three weeks of playing time before major league rosters are expanded will provide a clearer picture.
The team didn't recall him earlier because Ankiel has no minor league options remaining and would have to clear waivers if he was brought up and sent back down.
La Russa said he planned on starting Ankiel the next "two or three days" and that he'd get plenty of playing time.
"We need to see Rick here and really assess how major league ready he is," La Russa said. "It's going to cost somebody playing time."
La Russa didn't consider putting Ankiel into the lineup against Young to be an overwhelming debut, reasoning he would see good pitches to hit batting in front of Albert Pujols.
"A tough assignment is to have a year like that and not get an opportunity," La Russa said. "He's facing (Brad) Penny tomorrow, he would have faced (Greg) Maddux yesterday and (Jake) Peavy the day before. This is the big leagues."
Ankiel, who found out about the callup at midnight Wednesday, didn't mind.
"From everything I've read, I thought I would be called up in September," Ankiel said. "So, this is nice. I appreciate them giving me a chance to start my career over."
Ankiel was 1-2 with a 7.13 ERA in six starts for the Cardinals in 2001 and wound up back in the minors. He missed 2002 with a left elbow sprain, then started 2003 in the minors and tore a ligament in his left elbow.
He returned to the majors in September 2004 and had a 5.40 ERA in 10 innings over five relief appearances with the Cardinals. After feeling a twinge in his elbow during winter ball in Puerto Rico, he announced on March 9, 2005, that he was switching to the outfield.
Following a 1-for-21 start, he wound up batting a combined .259 with 21 homers and 75 RBIs in 85 games split between Double-A Springfield and Class A Quad Cities, then spent the 2006 on the disabled list after hurting his left knee during a Cardinals intrasquad game early in spring training.
St. Louis, sagging after winning last year's World Series, hopes the left-handed hitter will provide a boost. Despite a 52-59 record, the Cardinals began Thursday just six games back of the NL Central-leading Milwaukee Brewers.
"Some of it has to do with what your club needs, and is there an opportunity there," La Russa said. "Unless you really needed Rick, it would be nice to bring him up when the time is right."
so far tonight: R. Ankiel (RF) 0-3 with 2 K's (no wild pitches)

Aaron Harang is by a wide margin the most under appreciated player in baseball. He was first in the NL in Ks and wins last year and didn't get a single Cy Young vote and he's having another great year this year all while playing in a horrible pitcher's park and nobody notices. Well I notice, Aaron, and you'll always have someone watching your back. :y:
Harang is awesome. I've liked him ever since he was with the A's and came on board as there 5th starter.

I think it's come up several times that Farns was going to get traded but then the other team would want the Yankees to pay half or all of his contract and that's what stopped them from trading him. Any information about Igawa going to the Padres? I heard the Padres took Igawa off Waivers but may want the Yankees to pay Igawa's salary.

I hope Cashman doesn't just pawn Igawa off on another team if they can't get anything in return. Yeah, I know Igawa has been horrible this year but he can't hurt the team right now in AAA. Hopefully they just let him work things out because he has shown flashes where he was very good. Yeah, I think they'd basically want us to pay his contract too. And we'd get no one in return. Send us Peavy or Hoffman and I'll take Igawa to Petco Park right now.;)
It was great we got the win. And Joba pitching 2 scoreless innings. It's really great they put him in there when it was still kind of a close game. Seeing him pitch 2 scoreless innings when we're only ahead by 2 or 3 runs is great for your second time on the mound. I really thought Carmona would be harder but we actually beat the Indians quite easily. I better send Peralta a gift basket for those 3 runs he helped us get early on.
Wow Baltimore just tied Boston they're 5-5 in the 8th inning after trailing 5-1. Getting 4 runs off of the Boston bullpen is kinda impressive.

Yeah, by the next series some team in a slump is gonna have to start winning. Detroit is also in somewhat of a real slump and Cleveland not having to much pitching and horrible defense. Well next week the Indians are taking on the Tigers so I guess all in all one of these teams has to start playing well to beat the other team. Travis Hafner is on the DL do you think that could put the Indians in a melt down? It happened with Boston they lost Varitek for a while last year and they just went in to meltdown.

You know it's kind of funny because it used to be the other way around. I mean at the beginning of the Year it was the Yankees relievers who were doing awful at keeping leads. And Boston had the strong bullpen. And now the Yankees seem to have the stronger bullpen and not giving up games. If this keeps up Boston is gonna end up like the Yankees did at the beginning of the season. Except this time it was Kyle Snyder who lost the game for them not Gagne. Yeah, I think he'll be better I don't think 3-4 runs is really that bad though. It's not like he was horrible. All I ask from the Yankees is to win. I don't care who helps the Yankees. The starter, The Relievers, or the Fat beer drinking 30 year old in the fifth row section D in seat 4. As long as the Yankees win I'm happy.
And I can't wait for the Red Sox series. I'm going to my first Red Sox/Yankees game on the Thursday afternoon game.:y: I don't have really good tickets but the Tier section isn't so bad. Those Red Sox/Yankees games are extremely expensive. Well they are for a cheap skate like me at least.

Aug 14 Zumaya (finger) retired two of the three batters he faced in his first rehab appearance for Triple-A Toledo on Monday. His fastball topped out at 94 mph, the Detroit Free Press reports.
Recommendation: "It was his first time out, and he was a little rusty. You could tell," Toledo manager Mike Rojas said. "He looked fine and feels good, so that's the best news." Zumaya is scheduled to pitch again on Wednesday and will be limited to one inning or 20 pitches. He is on pace to join the Tigers as soon as next Tuesday.
