Beckett the first to 20 wins, ensuring himself the Cy Young award unless Sabathia gets to 20 because wins are all that matters.
The award should be Sabathia's...should have won at LEAST 6 more games than he has thanks to a complete lack of offense. Hell he went 4 straight starts at one point of 7 or more innings with only 2 runs and he didn't win. Shame the voters are too stupid to realize it.
They haven't even started voting yet though. I've heard more talk about Sabathia getting it over Beckett.

THE MELK MAN DELIVERS!
And boy did he deliver I saw it was in the 10th and gave up knowing how bad they are in Extra innings. I am really hoping for a easy win tomorrow. And by easy I just mean don't go into Extra innings. This was a great win all the same.

Hero, what's up with Toronto's D? Are they always like that?
I swear Aaron Hill musta got a huge Yankee bribe or something :o 2 straight games of allowing the Yanks to tie it up due to a crap play
Dragon
09-23-2007, 02:24 AM
Man, can Al Reyes be any more horrible? Today was the third time in the past couple weeks he's blown a save against the Sox.
As for the Yankees, definitely wasn't a pretty win but a win regardless. With Detroit losing we creep closer to a playoff berth and thats all that matters right now.

He's a solid, real solid defender, but I think because of the por throw the 1st game that allowed Posada to reach base instead of ending the game has put jitters into him. Cracking a bit under pressure. Losing his clutchness, if you wheeeeeeel

I don't understand how Boston clinched a playoff spot. I read the Yankees magic number for the WC is about 4 games. So wouldn't Boston's magic number be at least 1 or 2 for that?

because they are garanteed at least the wild card now.
Loose Cannon
09-23-2007, 12:26 PM
yea, I know that. The numbers are just confusing me. ESPN says the Yankees magic number is 4 for the WC. Boston is 2 1/2 ahead of the Yankees. wouldn't Bostons number just be half of NY's? ahh forget it, really confused here

Nice win by the Yanks, back to 1.5 games behind Boston
Mussina had a solid outing and Joba gets his first save. I really hope Cashman sticks to his guns and slots Joba in the rotation next year; definitely has to be tempting for him to leave him in the pen though.

I'd leave Joba in the pen.
Someone has to replace Clemens.
Loose Cannon
09-23-2007, 07:46 PM
reason I say that is I think we have enough bats to counter are at times terrible starting pitching. Having a guy who can stop in the 7th and 8th is very viable to NY.
ClockShot
09-23-2007, 08:15 PM
Someone has to replace Clemens.
Probably Kei Igawa. Pending spring training tuning.
Either him, or we go looking around for a big name.
I also agree with leaving Joba in the pen.
Dragon
09-23-2007, 08:18 PM
I dunno, don't really agree. I'll always take a good starting pitcher over a bullpen guy. Especially when you have someone like Joba, he has 3 plus pitches and a decent change. In the pen he only really uses the slider and fastball though. Its too good to give up Joba being a starter for next year, even if it doesn't work out well you have the bullpen option to fall back on.
Also, when you take into account he will just be a set-up man presumably, assuming Mo is back next year. Even if he could be a dominant set-up man I want to see what he can do in the rotation.

I don't think we even need Joba as a starter or Kei Igawa. All though I would prefer to see Joba as a starter. I really think we can keep him in the bullpen without having to go after a fifth man for our rotation or putting Igawa in. I really think we don't need a big name for 08. Why pay extra money for someone in 08 when we could have Johan or CC in 09?

When it comes right down to it...the Mets really should have kept these guys:
-Chad Bradford: 3.41 ERA with Orioles...only one home run given up in a hitter's park
-Darren Oliver: 3.66 ERA with Angels
One has to assume the numbers would be even better in the NL. Both of those guys knew their roles as Mets and were able to play well in the pressure.
Instead, we gave Schoeneweis 3 years when we wouldn't give Bradford that...and Aaron Sele has given up 78 hits in 53.2 innings as our long man :|

SO it's confirmed we're facing Cleavland? That is bad news. We've been doing well against Cleavland this season. I don't know if I want to be eliminated the first round by the Indians. The Angels we at least had a chance. But it seems like every team we do well against during the season we choke at the playoffs to them ( Take the 2006 Tigers for example)

Yeah, but we can't beat LAA in the regular season or the playoffs so it doesn't matter much. This years AL is ridiculous, all four teams are really good and there should be some good series. I can see any one of the four going to the world series easily.
On the other side the NL continues to be mediocre but at least there is some interesting races going on, I guess. LOL @ the Mets though. Gonna be a horrible offseason if they pull off this choke.

some interesting things happening still. Pads and Rockies might be playing a 1-game playoff tomorrow. Rox win that and this year's postseason will have 7 teams that didn't make it last year
But I just can't think about that now. Just seeing the looks on the faces of the players and fans...holy shit.
Thank fuck the Giants play tonight....I need them to win or at least stay in it so I won't toally be in the dumps tonight

I don't think the current Mets team will ever recover from this. I've been saying since '05 that if we didn't win by this year, we are screwed because we traded away our farm system for old players who didn't even turn out. Now the team needs a huge overhaul. Maybe Minaya will actually get rid of some of our crappy useless relievers IE Mota, Sele, Schoenweiss instead of letting go of the ones who actually produce IE Roberto Hernandez, Chad Bradford. Hopefully we have another productive offseason of signing 100 more Latinos too

It's so crazy to think that, not just in this two week stretch, but in the whole season...if they can take ONE bad game...ONE...and turn it into a win, they'd be guaranteed a playoff. And if they could do that with two games...they would be NL East Champs. Baseball is a crazy game.
So many things...Reyes...what the fuck man. You went from being one of the best players in the league to being a total afterthought. Like seriously, I'm worried something off the field may have happened to him or something...because he was just completely lost at the plate through most of August and all of September. Mets need him to be the normal Reyes through all of 2008...because the offense went right down with him at times. I honestly see his 2008 season starting like Beltran's in '06 - boos whenever he doesn't produce until he (hopefully) shuts people up.
Glavine...player option for 2008. Intially was leaning toward retirement...now saying he wants to stay. If he decides to keep playing, I hope he has the good sense to turn down his option...because I don't think the fans want to see him back, especially not after ending the year with the worst game of his career.
Options...initally I thought for sure Alou would be a goner but honestly, the way he tore it up at the end of the year...I say what the hell, exercise his '08 option. We'll need 2 corner OF'ers cause I don't see Green coming back (said he might retire). I'd just let Milledge start full-time next season.
Lo Duca...really tough call. I love the guy personally, he provides spark and is a clubhouse leader. I'd like to see him back, but I wouldn't mind Ramon Castro starting full time either.
Castillo...I see him being brought back. The guy's a damn good number 2 hitter, but they need to keep Gotay cause Castillo's knees give out so much.
But the part of the team that really needs a kick in the ass: the bullpen. They absolutely need to make a splash here somehow, someway. Problem is, a quick glance at the FA market and I really don't see any of them being really available. The 5 names that jump out to me the most are Rivera, Nathan, Izzy, F. Cordero, and Linebrink. The only one that I really could see them getting is Cordero.
Mota has a year left on his deal, Schoeneweis has 2 years left. Both are definitely gonna be back in the spring (cause no one in their right mind would trade for them)...but man I hope they get a lot of competition in the spring and get DFA'd.
---
Anyway, as crushed as I am...realistically the Mets would have had very little chance of getting out of the first round. I know teams play totally differently come October, but they'd be lucky to force a game 5.
That being said, I'm still intrigued by the playoffs this year. Tomorrow's Rockies/Padres game should be really interesting.
This defeat is gonna take a long time to heal, and it'll be a long offseason. But oh well, shit happens.

Saw something interesting. I knew the '64 Phillies blew a 6.5 game lead...but didn't realize they did so on September 20th with 12 games to go. So technically, that is still a bigger collapse than the '07 Mets.
Also, I'm hearing that the Johan sweepstakes will almost certainly be on this offseason...a Mets beat reporter has said he expects them to go all out to get him, though it would mean at least one major bat goes (either Reyes or Beltran)
