Pretty dumb ass move by Pinella, you're right. Zambo was rollin rollin rollin rollin WHAT
I guess he put too much faith in Marmol. Gotta remember that he's a rookie though. Obviously he backfired.
Loose Cannon
10-04-2007, 12:33 PM
the Cubs never scored another run anyway, so it actually worked out for them. Of course there's the: would Arizona scored if Zambrano was left in?
Pretty dumb though. I would like to here his reasoning.

Supreme Olajuwon
10-04-2007, 02:05 PM
In Piniella's defense he pulled Zambrano for a guy who had a 1.43 ERA this year. The part I don't get is if he had Zambrano on a pitch limit, why didn't he pinch hit for him in the top of the 6th when they had runners on 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs? They had Ward on the bench.
FakeLaser
10-04-2007, 02:40 PM
Marmol was unhittable during the regular season but he's a rookie. When your ace is rolling like that you don't take him out. It seemed like a dumb ass move, even dumber now that you mention that he didn't pinch hit for him. Zambo can hit well for a pitcher but he still can't hit as well as a position player, especially Ward who was their best pinch hitter all season. I guess you could argue that they were saving him for the later innings, but there was definitely more than one guy on the bench.
The announcers said Pinella expected Zambrano to throw about 100 pitches. I don't see why the hell he'd take him out after 85 and not pinch hit for him. Maybe there was something wrong with him? I don't know, the whole thing just doesn't add up, especially for a great manager like Pinella.

I like the Phillies and the Rockies. Shame only one can advance. I would rather the Rockies advance and make it to the series because I think they will be easier to beat for the Yanks. Either way Id be ok with it. Any of the 4 teams can make the series, as long as they lose to the Yanks.

I like the Yankees chances if they take tomorrows game. Carmona won't be easy but he is beatable; if they can get to Sabathia (somewhat) they can get to Carmona. Pettitte needs to step up and pitch a solid game.
Interesting stat though. Since 1995 in the ALDS series; when the Yankees win game 1 they ended up being something like 2-5 in those series. When they lose game 1 they are 5-0.
Dragon
10-05-2007, 12:04 AM
I still think starting Wang in the first game was the biggest mistake though. For the season he has an ERA in the 2.00s at home and in the high 4s on the road. That definitely says something; would have felt much more comfortable with Wang starting game 3. I guess the only question is if Roger could have gone game 2. Hell, would have even gone with Hughes for game 2 and save Roger for game 4.

Okay, who is the jokster that glued Matsui's bat to his shoulder?
Dragon
10-05-2007, 12:11 AM
Everything he swings at he lightly pulls to the right side and grounds out to the 2nd baseman anyway. He has been in a horrible slump for the past month and isn't helping at all. I really think Duncan should be in there in some form tomorrow. DH or 1st base are the only options really, but he should be in there.

(Matsui that is)Hideki Matsui that is
Dragon
10-05-2007, 04:50 PM
Not really sure what Torre is thinking. He's batting Hideki 5th behind A-Rod today, pretty much guaranteeing that A-Rod will not get one pitch to hit. Why would the Indians anyway when they could get Matsui to get a weak groundball or popup in the infield. I hope I'm wrong and Matsui gets some hits, but his .160 AVG the last month or so doesn't make me too confident.
Supreme Olajuwon

Pitching was awesome tonight, but like the last few years, nobody can hit. We need players who can win in the playoffs, not get us to the playoffs.
Dragon
10-05-2007, 11:19 PM
Yup, pitching was there, hitting wasn't. Joba gave up that run but he didn't even give up a hit. Uncharacteristic wild pitches and walks killed him.
But it is pretty damn pathetic when you remember every single hit your team has in the game, and every single inning/situation it is in. You have to give some credit to Carmona because he was flat-out nasty but still. You gotta score more than 1 run.

Yup, 3 or 4 other guys have a big .000 average for the playoffs so far. Of course the papers and ESPN will only mention A-Rod.
The Yankees faced two of the best pitchers in baseball but now they face Westbrook and Byrd at Yankee Stadium. If they do what they should against those two guys then I could easily see it going back to Cleveland for one game. And when it gets to that point anything can happen. Its not like Sabathia shut us down or anything last time.

I love Joe Torre and I have been one of the few who has stood behind him but he has been horrible this series.
We should be running on Victor Martinez. I don't fucking get it. He's like the worst catcher in major league baseball. We aren't hitting, why the fuck aren't we taking any chances?
I don't know why the hell he'd hit Matsui behind A-Rod. Shit, at this point, I think Matsui has shown he shouldn't even be playing right now. Give Giambi a start at DH or even Shelley Duncan on Sunday. I'd hit Posada or even Cano behind A-Rod before Matsui at this point.
Joba will be fine. He was clearly bothered by the bugs. Rivera was Rivera. Even Vizcaino wasn't bad. Pitching hasn't really been our problem, except for Wang. This is the lineup I'd put out there tomorrow:
Damon
Jeter
Abreu

All we need is Clemens to give us 5 solid innings. Vizcaino can handle the 6th and then Joba and Rivera can slam the door shut on the 7th, 8th and 9th.
Game 4 is worrying. Hughes looked good in relief the other night but I doubt Torre will trust him in a huge game like that. I might be inclined to agree with him. I think we'll see Mussina out there, who I hope will be amped up for one of the biggest games of his career. He's been awful these past 2 seasons in the postseason though and his regular season numbers don't help.
I'd almost consider going with Wang on short rest. He's much better at home. I don't know if it's a great idea though, I can't remember how Wang pitches on short rest (or if he's even done it before). Also, he may be better at home, but he was terrible in game 1. TERRIBLE.
We really just need to start hitting. Everyone collectively. Rafael Perez has retired every batter he has faced thus far. Ridiculous.

I dunno. From what I've heard Martinez has been a lot better at throwing runners out this season. Last year he threw out 13% of baserunners and this year he's at 30% apparently. He seems to have improved a lot there. And the fact we didn't get on too much really hurts.
I think the plan should be Wang in game 4 if we get there. I don't think they'd put the season on Hughes or Mussina. He's on short rest but sinkerballers tend to be better on short rest. Although usually when Wang's sinkerball is better he can't control it and walks a ton of guys. If we get to 5 Pettitte should be the one anyway.
They really need to pull out all the stops. Clemens has to pitch good tomorrow and if we get to game 4 Wang should start but be on a short leash with Mussina and Hughes ready to go at any time.
All long as they stay with Westbrook and Byrd in games 3 and 4 we have a chance to get to game 5. And once we get there anything can happen.
FakeLaser
10-06-2007, 03:34 PM
Even if he's improved he's still not good. Even if he is decent we should be taking more chances. We haven't tried to manufacture any runs. Once again, we're waiting on the long ball, which is usually fine for us but we aren't hitting. We don't have time to break out of it. If we're going to go down we should go down fighting, not waiting around for someone to finally get that big hit.
Dragon
10-06-2007, 03:40 PM
Yeah I agree with you. Just saying Martinez isn't as bad as before. It would have been huge if we could have just manufactured one run yesterday but we couldn't. Its pretty awful considering we have scored 4 runs these two games and three have come on homeruns. That definitely has to tell you something.
Well, win or go home time for the Cubs. Seriously, i dont think Lou should be fired, but he's gunna be the one to blame for losing this series. I'm still like wtf at game 1. If he would have kepy Zambrano in there, i gotta think our bats would come alive and it would be a tie game until they did. If the Cubs win game 1. The series was done. Brandon Webb is there best weapon. You beat there best weapon in the first game and the series is over. But sweet Lou lost his fucking mind.
It isn't like anyone else is doing anything
Yup, 3 or 4 other guys have a big .000 average for the playoffs so far. Of course the papers and ESPN will only mention A-Rod.
The Yankees faced two of the best pitchers in baseball but now they face Westbrook and Byrd at Yankee Stadium. If they do what they should against those two guys then I could easily see it going back to Cleveland for one game. And when it gets to that point anything can happen. Its not like Sabathia shut us down or anything last time.
LOL WHAT??? Fuck what everyone else is doing. A-rod is the highest paid player in the league. He's gunna be the AL MVP. He's been absolutely obliterated by the media for his post season performance and what does he do? He comes in and has a whopping .000 average so far. Thats a fucking joke. Everyone got on Manning when he struggled. Everyone laughed at Dirk Nowitski last year when he won the MVP after his team got bounced by the warriors and was shit. OFCOURSE blame A-Rod. I dont see why not. He deserves it. A guy of that caliber should not be performing like he is right now. Its basically inexcusable in my mind.
I mean, if Kaz Matsui can muscle up a playoff grandslam in a tie game. I think the least A-Rod can do is get on first base.
Hows it feel to know that if A-Rod is hitless going into his last atbat ( or possibly first for that matter ) and he doesnt get a big hit, he'll be booed so loudly, he definetly wont be back to New York next year? That has to suck.

Report: Steinbrenner says Torre's job on the line against Indians

As New York stands on the brink of elimination in the first round of the playoffs for the third season in a row, owner George Steinbrenner says longtime manager Joe Torre needs to advance in the postseason if he wants to keep managing the Yankees.
"His job is on the line," Steinbrenner told the Bergen Record. "I think we're paying him a lot of money. He's the highest-paid manager in baseball, so I don't think we'd take him back if we don't win this series."
Torre makes $7 million a season and is in the final year of his contract. The Cleveland Indians lead the Yankees 2-0 in their American League Division Series.
Roger Clemens will take the mound for New York while Jake Westbrook will start for the Indians.
During his 12 years leading the Yankees, Torre has taken the Bronx Bombers to 12 consecutive playoff appearances and four World Series titles.
"He's been good for us over the years," Steinbrenner acknowledged to the paper.
Steinbrenner also had some choice words about retiring veteran umpire Bruce Froemming and his decision to play through the late-game bug infestation during Friday's Game 3 extra-inning victory for the Indians.
"The umpire was full of [expletive]," Steinbrenner told the paper. "He won't umpire our games anymore."

ROFL Steinbrenner is such a joke, HE WON'T UMPIRE OUR GAMES ANYMORE!!
The bugs where there for both teams, its not like they where only bothering the Yankee players or something.
I hope Torre does get fired because I think hes a great fit for that type of team, he might not be the best manager decision wise but he is able to work with a locker room full of the type players they bring in. I feel the same way about Terry Francona, he makes a lot of decision that level me thining "the fuck?" but he knows really knows to handle a locker room full of big money players and his results have been pretty good (playoffs 3 outta 4 years, 1 World Series Championship, 1 Division Title) I'm the biggest Yankee hater there is, but if you can think you can just write off Joe Torre because he coaches the team with the highest payroll than thats just dumb. I mean pretty sure the Mets are the 3rd highest aren't they? Look where that got them
Really hope Torre gets fired though, would be the best thing to happen to the Red Sox in a while

Yeah that's hilarious...especially since MLB decides the umps.
I'd like to see the game end like this: First and second, two out...A-Rod at the plate. Base hit to the outfield somewhere, ball is thrown in, close play....Bruce's decision. Rules the man out to end the game as Bruce flips off the owner's box and leaves.

Yeah, feeling the same way. I don't think we would even be in the playoffs if it weren't for Torre this year. He was able to handle the team and get everything back on track, IMO. Who would have thought getting to the playoffs 12 straight years in a row would mean so little. I mean seriously, the man has never missed the playoffs in his whole time here and the Yankees haven't missed them in more than a decade. You can say it is the Yankees payroll that got them there every year but that's not gonna convince me. A lot of high payroll teams have not come close to the postseason.

LOL this dumbass on a message board I visit thinks MLB should go the way of the NBA and NHL and have 16 teams in the playoffs :|
He proposed that, in order to do that...you have to start the playoffs in September. The first round will be best of 3 and will start in late September (the season can start a week earlier). The 3 division winners get the top 3 seeds, the other 5 are based on records. Tie records are decided by head-to-head results.
Then it gets even more clusterfucked because he said the whole "you can't play a team in the first round" rule would be in effect...so basically a team with say a #5 seed could wind up playing a #3 based solely on division. This would have been this year's first round games:
AL
Boston (1) vs. Minnesota (8)
New York (4) vs. Seattle (5)
Los Angeles (3) vs. Detroit (6)
Cleveland (2) vs. Toronto (7)
NL
Arizona (1) vs. Atlanta (8)
Colorado (4) vs. New York (5)
Chicago (3) vs. San Diego (6)
Philadelphia (2) vs. Milwaukee (7)

Worst idea ever? Quite possibly.

Yeah, the guy said start the playoffs in early-to-mid September, causing the season to start in March.
But in March it might still be snowing in Boston and NY and other places. Plus you'd have spring training starting in January. The whole idea is fucked.
Personally, I don't mind the playoffs as they are...but if they were to increase teams, I'd go NFL-style. 12 teams, top 2 in each league get a bye. But the first round would be 1-game only before going into the DS as usual.
It'd be a huge advantage for the top 2 seeds cause not only do they get a break, but the other team would probably wind up using their ace pitcher in the 1 game.

They shouldn't increase the teams at all. The last thing I wanna see is some 8th seed NL team below .500 in the World Series.

I think MLB has the best Playoffs right now. I hate how the NFL has bye teams,. They need only win 2 games, with homefield advantage to win the bowl. All teams should have to win the same amount of games. I dont like NBA and NHL, because too many teams make it. It should be onyl for the elite.

Yeah, I just see them throwing Sabathia and Carmona at us if we get to game 5. That is a very scary thought.
Today its just Wang unless he gets into trouble. He needs to give us innings this game.
If we get to game 5 it is worrisome though. I don't think Pettitte will throw as good as that game 2 and I don't think Sabathia pitches as bad as he did game 1. But hey, I'll take anything if we can get there.
