Not a good sign when it takes 4 pitchers to get through one inning against the light hitting A's.
Pretty sure all the innings are catching up to Proctor because he sure is sucking lately. Myers has been awful since I can remember. Lefties are batting over .300 against him yet he is still brought into big spots to get out lefties.
While this kid Ramirez has a .68 ERA in AAA, with 47 K's in 26 IP. Definitely is a good idea to leave him down there so the bullpen can continue to suck. No way he could be worse than what we have.

LOL @ Jason Kendall taking Igawa deep :(

Yeah, if I didn't know anything about Kendall I would think hes a big power bat based on how he hits off the Yankees. I remember last year he hit his first HR in like a year or something crazy like that against us.

OF - Gary Sheffield, Detroit Tigers
1B - Kevin Youkilis, Boston Red Sox
---------
I dunno, it’d be fairly weird if Leyland batted his 3 starters at the bottom of the order…but I can see it. Definitely some AL Central bias in the 32nd man vote, but ah well. Youkilis deserves to be in the 5-man vote, mainly because Ortiz took up his spot on the ballot at 1B.

32nd Man Fan Vote
RHP – Francisco Cordero, Milwaukee Brewers
2B – Orlando Hudson, Arizona Diamondbacks
RHP - Tim Hudson, Atlanta Braves
1B - Derrek Lee, Chicago Cubs
SS – Hanley Ramirez, Florida Marlins
---------
Pretty solid, but I do hate leaving guys like Hanley out (it was a tough call between him and Derrek Lee for the last guaranteed spot) because I need to put Pirates and Nationals on the team. Coming up with a lineup was also tough. It was either gonna be 3rd or 5th for him, and seeing as Beltran is now going on a tear, I put Sori 5th.

Thanks.
The more I think about it, I made some more changes. Moved Eric Byrnes onto the team and D-Lee into the 5-man vote. Also, I eliminated Izzy from the vote in exhange for Tim Hudson.
I did not think there was any way to hate Julio Lugo more, since he's basically been relegated to pinch running, but that pathetic attempt to steal 3rd on 2 outs with Youkilis at bat made me hate him that much more. I guess he figured that taking baby steps to 3rd and trying to plow the 3rd baseman over after the throw was going to work. Not sure whose idea it was to steal 3rd there, but if Lugo is so fast and in scoring position then he shouldn't have had to steal and force the last out at 3rd did he?
Mike Hargrove lost his smile.

Oh c'mon guys, Fuentes and Valverde have 20+ saves this season, clearly they deserve to be all-stars no matter how many runs they give up per appearance.
I'm surprised Dan Wheeler wasn't elected with his stunningly horrible 5.87 ERA.

for some reason Epstein had a woody for Lugo and JD Drew and just HAD to have them this season, they are both overpaid pieces of garbage (well Drew is alright but still)
Yeah no kidding. I can tolerate Drew though cause he has started hitting well and his fielding is solid (no one can reach home from third on his throws), but Lugo is just a complete waste of money since he can't do anything right. He can't hit, can't field, and we learned yesterday that he has little common sense running bases.
Cora started at SS the last 2 games and hit safely in both those games while playing really well defensively, and he makes a fraction of Lugo's salary.

They need to open the Home Run derby to all hands. The Dunk Contest is a place for young guys to make a name. i say get Bonds out of the Derby, Slide in Dunn. They should have a rookie game too. MLB All Star games are about Names over Skills. They need to start opening it up to the new generation to help distance themselves from the steroid era.
I would rather see Dunn, Alex Rios and Jack Cust in a home run derby than Bonds and Girffey these days.

As a Die hard Yankees Fan I am glad that they are at least keeping pace. But I am also realistic, and I dont see them making the playoffs. I think it is time to do the opposite ofwhat they usually do....trade names to contenders.
Send Abreu to a contender (LA?) looking for a bat for some pitchign prospects (Never can have too many)
Slide Damon to Right, Insert Melky for the next 10 years. Giambi is good for a DH until his contract is up, I doubt anyone will take it. Until he gets back from Injury just plug anyone in there.
This upcoming offseason Dont resign Clemens, Drop Pettite, Sign a 3B man (Cabrera is a Free Agent this year, right?) when AROD Walks, and Build around the Cabreras and their young pitching staff. jeter will assume the role of Player Coach :)
Dragon
07-02-2007, 08:32 PM
Damon would be awful in right. People would be scoring from second on routine flys with his ridiculously awful arm.
Clemens won't be back for another year (at least not here).
Pettitte you definitely have to bring back next year. He's been our best pitcher this year and is getting screwed out of wins because of the offense. He got bombed his last outing but he has given us tons of chances to win.
Bringing back Pettitte also makes sense when you think of our rotation for next year...Wang, Moose (and his 87 MPH fastball), Hughes...from there it drops to a bunch of scrub pitchers because I don't think any of the top pitching prospects will be ready next year besides Hughes. Bring back Pettitte and hope at least one guy steps up for the #5 spot. If not, Karstens or Rasner could be decent #5 starters.
As for A-Rod. Cashman needs to get him back next year. Our only power bat pretty much and theres no way to replace his production. I think he'll go to whoever offers the most money; so even with all the media crap with NY I think he'd come back if the money is right.
FakeLaser
07-02-2007, 08:47 PM
I think A-Rod is staying. Who else is gonna give him the money he wants? Cashman would be out of his mind to let him walk. Then again...
I wish we could just get rid of Giambi. Then Damon could DH full time and essentially be what Bernie Williams was. Melky would take over at CF, where he should be starting for a while. He should be the next Yankee lifer (along with Cano and Wang). Posada will re-sign.
What's the deal with Abreu? Do we have an option with him next year or is he signed? If he doesn't turn it around he's gone, I'd say. Torrii Hunter wouldn't be a bad signing for next season if Abreu can be gotten rid of. Shift Cabrera to right. I don't think the Twins are re-signing him.
There's some attractive free agent pitchers out there, unlike these past few years where we've signed pretty mediocre arms. Carlos Zambrano comes to mind. Free agents haven't done shit for our pitching staff since Mike Mussina though. Oh, and Pettitte, but he's not your typical Yankee free agent.
Still, IMAGINE:
Zambrano
Wang
Pettitte
Mussina
Hughes
I don't think it's unreasonable to think that after a disapointing season like this, Steinbrenner will axe Cashman and go after whatever free agents he likes (Ichiro?)

The hardest part will be what to do with Damon and Giambi next year. Both really are just DH's at this point.
I think we have a $16 M option or something like that we could pick up on Abreu for next year.
Not really sure about Zambrano here, for some reason I think he'd be awful. Thats probably just a feeling I get after no starter we've picked up via free agency the past 4 years or so has seemed to work out.
Some of the free agent pitchers after the 08 season are crazy though - Peavy, Santana, Penny, Sheets, Sabathia, Lackey. Some will most likely re-up with their current teams but I'd assume a few might hit free agency. Should be really interesting when some of those guys go on the market.
And hopefully Steinbrenner doesn't go crazy this offseason on huge free agent contracts. Its what got us stuck with some of the players we have now.

I'm REALLY hoping the Mets make a strong push for Zambrano this off-season. They'll almost certainly save at least $20.5 million just by not executing the options on Glavine, Green, and Alou...that is, at least, assuming Glavine gets his 300 wins and decides to not return to the Mets, since his is a player option. They can also save another $4.6 mil if Jose Valentin doesn't reach 400 PAs this year.
I'd love to get Zambrano...because he's young and he'll be the ace we sorely need. Thing is, he'll probably want 6 years or something and the Mets wouldn't offer Zito more than 5. Hope that won't be an issue. Plus if you get him, then one of those stud pitchers after the '08 season would probably follow suit, and they'd have the money with Pedro, Delgado, El Duque, and others coming off the books after that year.

I dont like Zambrano. I see him folding hard on either NY team. A guy who fights his catcher in Chicago is going to kill his coach in NY. Some guys arent built for the NY teams. Half of Playing for the Mets/Yankees/Knicks/Giants/Jets/Isles/Rangers is mental. How many Careers have gone to NY to die?
Zambrano needs to stay in Chi Town.

What do the Yanks do for 1B in the long run?
Slide Damon to first, Giambi to DH? That could work this year, but what about the future?
I say find a way to send a package for Abreu to the reds for Dunn.

Well we're thinking about Mark T. From Texas for first if I'm not mistaken. I don't know if I want Dunn though. Doesn't he go on the DL a lot? The Yankees have to many DL problems as it is.
And MatthewAllenHanso If you put Posada and Cano and Andy Pettitte on that list of not to be traded even though I do love Johnny Damon I would put the rest of the team on the trade block. But let's face it that's never gonna happen.

Yeah. The Yankees also have a huge advantage in that Texas pays a lot of A-Rods contract. The Yankees only pay about 16 million of his 27 million salary. If he opts out though then all that goes out the window. Cashman needs to try and just extend his contract before he opts out. Me too! Edwar Martinez was pretty good today. It's not often a rookie gets 3 straight outs without allowing a hit or walk. Will he be the next closer? I have no idea. I don't really like to base how pitchers and players are gonna be after one game. But if he's as good as he was today. I would say there's a big possibility of that. And to think he was gonna quit but his father talked him out of it.

Let's hope A-Rod feels better today it's happened to Jeter where he got taken out of the game for leg injury and then was back the next day. Let's all pray this is what happened to A-Rod.
Adam Dunn isn't injury prone. He's played at least 160 games the past 3 years. But he can't play first. He is terrible at it. If Dunn goes to the AL he'll be a DH for the rest of his life.

Thankfully, Oliver Perez is set to come back and pitch in the series against the Reds immediately after the break (probably displacing Pelfrey if Dave Williams does well on Sunday).
But the biggest problem right now is the offense. When we get Alou and Chavez back in a few weeks it should be much better...but right now its just a struggle. I'd like to see them bench Valentin, start Gotay, release Franco, and bring up anyone else.
I'd like to see them send Franco down when they promote Williams. This enables us to use Sandy Alomar as our backup catcher so we can use Castro in pinch-hit situations...the dude can hit.

Dragon

Vizcaino pitched fine, the error that Cairo made gave them that run. And Farnsworth couldn't go out there again because he can't pitch two innings in a row. He really is probably the least flexible relief pitcher ever, he needs everything to be right just to get through an inning cleanly. He can't pitch two innings in a row, can't pitch back to back days, and he has to start the inning (can't come in during the middle of an inning).
There were so many opportunities to get the lead but noone could come up with the timely hit.

I don't know they have Dice-K on the mound tonight so they might be able to get a win depending on who's pitching for Detroit. The Yankees have a problem with 1 and 2 run games. It seems like whenever there's a number under 3 they lose. Most of their games have been beaten by a big number. I really don't know about the Red Sox. They are having a great season so far but I always have to wonder after being swept by the Mariners, Texas, and the chance of getting swept by the Motor City Kitties could this mean the Red Sox might have a downfall at some point.
The Yankees have a chance at getting to the playoffs. The chances aren't very good but I think we can at least slide in to the wildcard. It won't be easy but I really don't think the Yankees are going to roll over and die.
Edit: I didn't know the Red Sox all ready lost the game with Dice K on the mound? I was almost positive that the Red Sox game started at 7. Now the Yankees are 10 games back. Really not so bad.

I'm telling ya, I was a little concerned with the way the Tigers were playing at the beginning of this homestand. After the last 2 against the Indians, and the way they won each game against the Red Sox, they are poised to make a run at the World Series again. There should be no more criticism against them as they beat the top two teams in the AL this week
And whereas there will be criticism, after the All star break we get Rodney back mid month and in either Aug or September, we get Zumaya. Tigers still need to make a big deal at the deadline for a quality reliever. The other trades they have made are decent, but they need a guy that is go to. If Rodney doesnt come back as strong, I'd package him in a deal with a young pitcher (that's the way it is lately with Detroit) and trade him to Texas and either pick up Otsuka or Gagne

Besides Hunter, they don't offer much protection at all, especially since, you know, they bat in front of him.
Hunter, an American League All-Star, is hitting .304 with 19 home runs and 68 RBI. There are very few players in the league better than Hunter this season.
And I guess having Cuddyer (.362 OBP) and Mauer (.403 OBP) on base ahead of him doesn't affect the pitches Morneau gets.
Morneau has as strong of a lineup directly before and after him as any player in the league this season, which is why he is among the league leaders in all offensive categories this season.
I don't know what you consider "protection," but if having Hunter behind you this season is not protection I don't know what is. Sure, maybe he would have better stats with Ichiro and A-Rod in front of him and Pujols and Bonds behind him, but as it stands the Twins 1-6 hitters are among the best in the league. Morneau is as "protected" as any player in the league.
YOUR Hero
07-09-2007, 02:00 AM
.638 of the time, Cuddyer is not on base and therefore offers no protection to Morneau. .597 of the time, Mauer does not get on base and therefore offers no protection to Morneau. Then there are the times that those two get more than a single and therefore open up 1st base in front of Morneau, which offers him virtually no protection.
I already said Hunter provides protection. He does for every at bat in which he hits behind Morneau.
Supreme Olajuwon

Morneau provides protection to Cuddyer because he bats behind him. No player on any team offers protection to another player that bats in front of him.
I've never stated that Cuddyer isn't valuable. All I ever said was I expected a drop off in Morneau's production this year. One reason I gave it was that Morneau does not have much protection behind him.

S Gotay (will never happen because Willie loves Jose Valentin)
R Milledge
And then when Alou comes back, bat him 5th in place of either Milledge or Green and bump everyone else down. Honestly, if Alou can stay healthy for the rest of the year, I think he's a good enough bat and negates the need to deal for a fill-in.
