No Spidey Reboot, Film Canon Continues:

Sam Raimi and series star Tobey Maguire have signed on for Spider-Man 4 and 5, and with a slip to the press, Kirsten Dunst seems to be down as well. Hmmm... she also let slip the villains of Spidey 3 after all the work Sony went through to hide it. Not too bright is she?

Mysterio FTW. He'll bring some visual flash on screen and Bruce can bring him to life.

Next 3 Years Will Be Marvelous:

Marvel and Paramount are BFF now, and the following collaborations are official:

Iron Man 2 (May 7, 2010), Thor (July 16, 2010), The First Avenger: Captain America (May 6, 2011), and The Avengers (July 15, 2011). That's alot of comic-book action.

I have no problems with the spidey news. Loved the first 2. The third had it's flaws, but was still really enjoyable. Although that wasn't really raimi's fault. Was the fault of the people who pushed to get venom in, when there was already 2 villains.

Can't see Captain America being any good, I mean wasn't he just invented to lift the spirits of the USA during wartime or something?

The whole concept of such a 'superhero' having their own feature film sounds proper...oh...I dunno...boring.

There's narrative gold in the story of a guy who was frozen for a while. He was created as a symbol of an America past, an America the world loved and revered. Now imagine him waking up from a cold sleep to find his country disgraced, the land he loves turned to a global antagonist. Just yesterday he was overseas kicking Nazi's asses, he led the way on D-Day! Now in the year 2008... how do you even break 9/11 to him? The Iraq War? The fall of ideas the world over let alone America?

Cap's story, done right and not afraid to hit those topics, could be as compelling as the Dark Knight - albeit in a different fashion. There's alot of potential messages to be found.

The Man Without Fear:

Daredevil as been announced as releasing the reboot treatment as well. Fox says-

*Sigh*

Alright... I personally feel that any reboot within the span of a decade is too soon. Change directions and styles for a sequel, but abandoning entire franchises just seems rude to me. For instance; The Empire Strikes Back is so much better than Star Wars I consider it a reboot - within the franchise context. But whatever, that's just my take on the whole 'scrap it, try again' fad that Incredible Hulk kicked off (some of you may remember I disagreed with tossing out Ang's Hulk-verse entirely).

Anyway, Fox says The Dark Knight inspired them to create a DD film with true vision. I guess that's noble enough for one of Marvel's most tortured heroes (who's very comparable to Batman as well).

Its actually considered kind of a failure. It was planned to make as equal if not just a little above or below Iron Man. But I really dont think anyone could of planned for Iron Man to make that much money.

I just heard today there is a rumour going around that the Xmen Origins movie is to set up a Deadpool stand alone movie.

Marvel Studios President of Production Kevin Feige recently spoke of Marvel U's success in film as well as its future.

On quality:

It has to do with the source material and the stories that Marvel has been telling for 70 years. It's due almost entirely to the fact that we've had writers and artists and creators that have been putting together some of the most amazing stories in any literature… Marvel has an embarrassment of riches. Technology is at a point where we can realize these things without them looking goofy or cheesy – which they still can, by the way. You can spend $500 million on something and still have it look terrible. That's the challenge. But certainly the odds are that with the proper care, technology will allow us to pull off something great.

On how "Batman & Robin" ironically boosted the comic movie business:

If you look at the end at the first incarnation of Batman, the failure of those movies was actually a boost not just for Batman, eventually, but for all of our films, and directly for X-Men. It showed people who were running studios that it's not just about money and visual effects. And on X-Men, of course, it was the attention to the comic book. Even if the costumes aren't the same, or the visual effects aren't there, if we just pay attention to the characters and get the core emotions of who they are, they're fascinating, and three-dimensional, and not cartoon-ish at all. Very few comic characters are "cartoony" …And with X-Men, it was unique at the time to show that on-screen, but here we are eight years later with the biggest summer ever for comic book movies.

On Avengers:

That's the fun part. The fun of a group-hero comic like The Avengers is not that there's five heroes running around together, it's that these are five heroes who you've been enjoying for years in their own titles coming together. And as different as Thor is from Iron Man is from The Incredible Hulk is from Captain America, when you throw them all together, you can play off that. You can see how the characters interact; you have the fun of how out of place Thor is… That's what his entire character arc is in Ultimates. You can have fun with it. But certainly it would be a mistake to start pigeon-holing or holding back certain characters just so they can "fit" into certain places we'd like to put them in later. It's a scripting issue how you make movies that can stand on their own two feet that can stand alone… and at the same time, reward fans for paying attention.

On the future:

Wolverine is coming out next May and the future of the X-Men franchise will be determined. Iron Man 2 is actively moving forward. We're well under way on that one with a May 7, 2010 release date. Thor is right on the heels of that with a July 16, 2010 release. The following year, in 2011, it's May 6th for Captain America and July 15th for The Avengers. So, the next three years of my life will be those four characters! Excellent characters and amazing worlds – I'm very, very excited. And as you know from having watched Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk, anybody can pop up anywhere at anytime.

This guys needs to train WB's execs, maybe they'll get their act together as well. The X-Men line is interesting... I think the franchise could be rebooted if Wolverine doesn't meet Iron-Man/Spidey 2/X2. Would that be a bad thing? If Marvel takes X-Men back from Fox, we could have Hugh Jackman rubbing elbows with Downy's Stark, Pitt(?)'s Thor, and most ambitiously Norton's Hulk. After X3... it may be high time.

In any case, awesome time for comic fans abroad.

Strange Quote Indeed...:

I remember two years ago at Comic-Con the cover of the L.A. Times Calendar Section read: "Marvel calls out the B team. And there was a picture of Iron Man. We don't look at them as 'B team.' Dr. Strange? This is one of the best characters we have. [He represents] this amazing cosmic universe to Marvel that we haven't played with in films yet and I think could be amazing to play with.

He said that Marvel's list of heroes headlining the post-Avengers years may well include the Sorcerer Supreme - we're talking 2012, 2013 though.

How is Gambit similar to Wolverine at all?

Singer was quoted to have said that he wasn't a fan of the Gambit charcter and that he thought he was too similar to Wolverine to put in the films.
Hence when they made X Men 3 after Singer left, they wanted to put Gambit in the film. However they wanted Sawyer from Lost to play him, but he didn't want to do it.

So after that long winded explanation, Singer thought that they were both loners and hence too similar.

No real interest in seeing the new one.
The movie looks pretty fuckin awful, and the new Punisher looks the part, but seems like a terrible actor. At least Thomas Jane is a competent actor.

I usually turn out to see the comic movies, even if I know they're going to suck. There's always some interest there for me since I grew up on the characters. With that being said, I had no real intention of going to see the new Punisher despite being fully aware of it coming out this weekend. I think that says something. If I don't give a fuck, who does? Probably nobody except for die hard comic book fans, if that.

It made 4 million dollars on it's opening weekend. 4. That's beyond a flop. Especially for a name brand character with a built in fan base. That's really sad. That's the end of Punisher as any kind of film entity.

They chose him because he's perfect for the film. Thor is norse legend, and likely going to be set in the distant past.
Branagh is legitimate in the world of directing period peices and Shakesperian adaptations.
He knows drama. He should be great for this, if they can get the right script and actor.
I'd love to see Daniel Craig play Thor, and them go balls to the wall with the Norse time period/epic scale.
It needs to be action packed and under 2 1/2 hours to work though.

They're using Gambit because people want to see Gambit. They should have used him in the Xmen films, but those are dead for the same reason. They squandered away tons of characters and made it too populated.
They're just trying to get all of the marketable names into these movies as fast as they can. Xmen3 was a fuckin waste. I wouldn't call it the worst sequel ever, or the worst comic film ever. Not at all. But it was pretty fuckin bad and I don't know if I've ever seen an installment KILL a franchise so directly.

Batman and Robin killed Batman because of how bad it was.
Xmen 3 just flat out killed Xmen because of the plot and execution. It turned out tolerable, but they blew their load and stripmined the franchise.

Funky Fly
12-17-2008, 08:37 PM
If they're going to do X4, they should acknowledge the first 3, but largely ignore them. Killing off Sabretooth first thing and ignoring his backstory with Wolverine was retarded. Thankfully, Sabretooth is near indestructible, so they can do the whole "no body, not dead" and bring him back like they would have if it were a comic book. Wolverine not recognizing him could be chalked up to the amnesia, but Sabretooth not recognizing Wolverine... damn.

Thankfully, X-3 left the door open with that little bit about Magneto's power not being entirely gone. That means anyone who was cured can be uncured, including Mags himself.

Kinda hope they follow X2's example and reference the shit out of people, rather than having 54643578359 people in it and they end up being one offs with no development who get killed (Psylocke, etc.). Also kinda hope they get an actual fan of the comics to direct (Favreau & Iron Man, Norton & Incredible Hulk) and not just a big name in Hollywood (Ang Lee & Hulk, Ratner & X3). They will respect the source material and not bollocks things up with retarded storylines or unnecessary changes to the characters.

That's what Funky is talking about; it's a bit of a plothole that Sabretooth would not recognise Logan (but not the other way around because of Wolverine's convenient amnesia angle) if he was gonna be in the "origin" story.

Thought he got knocked off the Statue of Liberty in the first one. That's a long way down, mang.

No he didn't die. They just never brought him back in the sequels for whatever reason.
He got knocked onto a fishing boat and crushed it. They showed that, and he laid there knocked out.
At the end, after the plan was foiled, however, they showed the cops approach the boat. It was still there, and it was crushed, but where Sabretooth should be laying there was nothing. He got away.

Toad died.

Into the ocean. Not such a bad fall for Creed. When you consider that Wolverine survived having most of his skin (but inexplicably, not his pants) destroyed by Phoenix, it is not so implausible Sabretooth survived.
Falling from a great height into water is actually worse than landing an the ground. The surface tension of the water actually makes it harder than earth. However...

lol true, Mitch.

Well, since the movie is supposed to be somewhere around the introduction of the New X-Men (give or take a few years), it's safe to assume that he didn't have his adamantium claws or super enhanced healing factor from Weapon X, so he could but he'd be pretty fucked up.

I just don't like how useless he was in that film. Sabretooth is a master tactician/manipulator. He wins fight he has no business winning because he can get in your head so well.

Yeah, that was really the point I was trying to make with the whole "Wolverine's pants survived the Phoenix explosion" thing. ie if Logan (and his pants) can survive that, then Creed can deal with a fall from the Statue of Liberty - onto a boat, into the ocean, whatever.

Also, I feel the opposite of Jeritron. This looks really good to me, and it looks like they are showing a lot of respect to the source material, despite Gambit being a part of Wolverine's past. But that has a lot t do with fan demand for the character, so it's easiy forgivable.

Anyway, although X3 was packed with tons of characters and didn't give great back-stories, I still enjoyed it. X2 was a the gem of the series to date imo. Not too sure why people would suddenly become to downcast on the X-Men stuff, it's good eye candy. I think it's a case of too many people nerding it up. After all a book isn't a comic and a comic isn't a movie and a movie isn't a play.... There are different mediums and people that tend to know the back-stories already because they're fans of the stuff via one medium don't really need to be explained the backgrounds. Casual movie go-ers aren't interested in long character developments, they want to get on with a blowing up of stuff and the be-headings, etc.

So yeah, in conclusion, mitch owes me an apology.

Granted it's different media, but the only things that really needed changing were the costumes. The eras of the source material that they drew on for the movie plots are some of the best periods in the X-Men comics.

Also, it is "cut your head off". It's widely acknowledged that the only real way to kill Wolverine or Sabretooth is decapitation. In fact, that is how Sabretooth dies in the comics anyway.

There were subtle implcations that they knew eachother. And they never said they din't know eachother either. Honestly, it was a good move on their part. Probably didn't directly acknowledge it, as it would have taken time they didn't have to go into, but at the same time left it open, so they could revisit it later if given the oppurtunity.

I was reading about that "lowballing" thing though. It's literally a cause of the economy. A lot of actors are getting over far below their quotes, and accepting it. Big name actors too. Things are getting cheap in hollywood even at the moment.
So it's not absurd for those offers to be made, and even taken.

I also read that Sam Jackson said he wouldn't be in future Marvel movies if Marvel continues to be cheap. That doesn't include Iron Man 2, since the deal for that is done. He means Avengers and the other sequels.

Black Panther Update:

We were shown a clip from the premiere episode, which Hudlin stressed was a "Very, very rough piece." The animation reinforced how the series is directly based on John Romita, Jr.'s artwork for Hudlin's first few issues of the Black Panther comic, in a scene in which an earlier incarnation of the Black Panther faces down a group attempting to raid his people – quickly proving he has superior technology, which causes their weapons to backfire. While there wasn't a lot of movement in the animation, it was notably detailed and fans of Romita Jr. will definitely enjoy seeing his distinctive style. And Cowan reiterated, "That was rough animation – we're just getting started." Hudlin said that when it came to the style, he agreed with fans who always ask, when watching an animated version of a comic, "Why can't it look like the comic?" He noted that here, "We took the art, the panels that John Romita did and we're bringing them to life."

Regarding what notable Marvel guest stars and villains to look for in the series, Hudlin said that most of those seen in the "Who is the Black Panther" story will appear, including Captain America. He noted, "This is triangle shield cap. World War II Cap will be having a showdown with T'Challa's ancestor." Following up on the bit of dialogue we heard Hounsou record, he also noted, "Juggernaut will be a major villain in the piece" and that Radioactive Man and Batroc the Leaper will also be seen.

Still not too keen on it being on BET. The forst season will run for eight episodes covering the "Who is Black Panther" story arc.

But if you're a Thor-head, you're going to go, oh right... So it was wonderful to hear this stuff. He wasn't just concerned about Thor, but he also understood going in, from the beginning - because we established very early on... Well, at the end of the Iron Man movie, but very early on [in the process], that there's going to be other movies that become part of this tapestry. This is essentially our Star Wars, our universe is our Star Wars, and he understands that his Thor movie is one of the legs of this table that will interplay with an Iron Man movie down the road, or the Avengers movie down the road.

First let me say the whole final battle thing is gay. I still don't see why they would kill off a character like Sabertooth in some non-event lack luster run. Although it's only right that Wolverine kills him, it's something I wouldn't expect for a long time if ever. And the whole bloodline rivalry bullshit is fucking stupid, 'blonds vs dark hairs'.

Origin did everything it can to spell out a proposed origin for Sabertooth and Wolverine's hatred without calling Dog, Sabertooth. I guess the movie guys are the only ones who got that.

'Tooth got a origin one-shot recently and yeah, another wasted opportunity. Your typical villain origin with all the elements to make him a sympathetic character, blah blah. You see with Dog, you see he was kind of a jerk for the longest, and it would show how far back Logan and Victor actually went. It made for a much better explanation of their feud than saying 'they're destined to hate each other'. That's too easy, that's weak sauce. I'm betting Origin wasn't allowed to use Victor Creed for whatever reason and left an 'open invitation' for future writers as a consolation.

Comics: "Hey, let's make them a part of an epic bloodline struggle with wolf-people, that's cool."
Movies: "Oh yeah, he's definitely Dog, we're going with that."

The final trailer for the Wolverine movie will drop this Thursday, MTV has a few clips - not really worth linking here, trust me.

BTW, Gambit will have his eyes, albeit confined to his retina. The color scheme is there, though.

Hugh Jackman on Wolverine Character Growth (Not Digging It?):

"I'm not mad about it, but I thought he had gotten a bit soft," Jackman says. "I thought we had gotten away from the essence of who Wolverine really is: a bad (dude) who wants to live his own life."

"The character has always reminded me of Dirty Harry or Han Solo," Jackman says. "He's a good guy, not a nice guy. He's got a lot of flaws, which I think is what people find so attractive about him and the X-Men. He's struggling with who he is and what he wants. He was one of the comics' first anti-heroes."

Well Played Fox:

With the Wolverine movie having kick-ass cameos of mutants never seen in live-action (Gambit, Deadpool), you wonder what that means in terms of the proper X-Film universe. I mean, this is an origin movie that takes place at the very least 10-15 years before Logan meets a certain vehicular stowaway in Canada. So what, Gambit and Deadpool must appear older if they are to appear in any future X-Films?

Mild Spoiler:
Nah, they'll appear just as they do in Wolverine's origin. A minor plot device is in place that will see that Gambit doesn't have to age a day. Deadpool, having similar regenerative abilities didn't need this fictional loophole, but Gambit is better served for it.

Kalyx triaD

Not Cyke, Scott Summers. Probably hunted down by Stryker for his Weapon project. By the looks of Weapon XI, he must have got a hold of him.

Funky Fly

It's probably gonna be a case of Wolverine inadvertently saved his ass while escaping from the project and murdering everything in sight and Summers, being locked in a cage, is totally unaware of how the cage door opens but doesn't waste a chance to escape. Of course, Wolverine then goes on to have his mind wiped 6796875324554 times and Cyclops never knew Logan accidentally rescued him.

Kalyx triaD

I've thought of that, but I doubt Fox is working that angle into their series. Since they are not in line with the other Marvel plans (for whatever reason).

Funky Fly
03-07-2009, 03:42 PM
How many more movies does Fox have left in the series?

Kalyx triaD
03-07-2009, 06:56 PM
Done wisely, they could eek out another trilogy based on the New X-Men, or even continue the story of the graduating X-Men from the first trilogy. They could also go on with the Wolverine movies and eventually Deadpool's film. Couple that with Magneto's work in progress and it seems Fox ain't letting go of their mutants.

Funny thing is, I want Fox to lose/let go of the X-Men universe. It's counter-productive for Fox to grip it in while Marvel Studios are on to something epic in the next few years. I feel very similar with Sony and Spider-Man - who are going on with another two movies themselves.

The situation could solve itself if some wheelin and dealin were to go down. As it stands, Fox CEO #3 doesn't care if I wanna see Hugh Jackman tangle with Hulk. Mutants aren't even mentioned as a group of people in any other Marvel movie but the Fox ones. Would it be so discouraging to Fox for there to be mention of mutants they're not even using? Being a mutant doesn't make you an X-Character by default (or does it?).

And Fox has little vision beyond $$$. They have Fantastic Four and X-Men, I would be the one in those studios meetings trying to get Chris Evans to appear in X-Men for some cool cameo. But with that logic, don't get me started on WB, who owns (as far as I know) all of the DC hero books - for years - and they've done shit with that huge advantage.

Anyway yeah, Fox has some movies left.

Funky Fly
03-08-2009, 01:37 AM
Being a mutant does not make you an X-character. There are plenty of mutants with little or no affiliation to the X-books. I kinda wonder about the whole House of M crossover as it got rid of shitloads of characters and basically killed off a lot of potential for new ones.

Kalyx triaD

Bit of slippage Marvel wise, old dates and new dates below:

Thor
July 16, 2010 > June 17, 2011

The First Avenger: Captain America

May 6, 2011 > July 22, 2011

Avengers

July 15, 2011 > May 4, 2012

edit - the Captain America slip is probably to avoid a clash with Spider-Man 4, which is aiming for a May 6th release in '11.

Iron Man 2 is still on schedule for May 2010. Rourke casting is confirmed, will seemingly be playing Whiplash with elements of the Crimson Dynamo mixed in, which was rumoured already I think.

March 26, 2009 - Marvel Studios is looking for a few good screenwriters.

Deadline Hollywood Daily reports that Marvel has established a writers program to build an in-house stable of screenwriters to work on their comic book movies. "The goal is to put more than half a dozen film writers on staff, give them an office, and 'work them like horses!'," according to DHD's source.

Marvel's comic book writers are not excluded from the program.

The site's source adds: "'Before the writers are even allowed to come in and meet, they must sign a non-disclosure agreement and a 70-page, non-negotiable contract. Among other things, the contract gives Marvel ownership over everything the writers create during the one year term of [the] deal, plus a first look and last refusal to any and all projects the writers have previously written or will write for 24 months in the future.'"

So is this a good move for Marvel? Or a bad move for writers?

Apparently a draft for Venom was turned in a while ago and Sony liked it enough to ask for some revisions, including some parameters the studio wanted in the story. The whole thing about plot-related stipulations for a Venom movie is that Venom himself is a plot stipulation from Sony, so I'm guessing Sony's gaga for Venom for some reason.

You're dodging the point:

I don't give a shit if she's Wolverina, I like her. I don't hate on Supergirl, Batgirl, Spider-Girl, or any other obvious girl-up of established characters. Many of them offer a nice spin. X-23 for instance is like seeing Logan's post Weapon X life as it happens in the midst of current 616 events instead of flash backs.

Creative shortcut? Yeah, but sales and critical response says a lot of other people don't give a shit either.

.44 Magdalene

Man, I'm just going to make you a huge list of things that sucked but got good critical responses so you'll stop using that argument.

Also, I do hate on most Supergirls, certain Batgirls, and Spider-girl, though mostly because they suck on their own without being Superhero A, Plus Boobs. I'd maybe appreciate X-23 if she were an interesting spin, but she's a clone of Wolverine. Literally. From Weapon X. Yeah, totally interesting and shit! And then she has to deal with teenager stuff 'cuz she's a teenager! But Wolverine! With a vagina! A teenage vagina! Interesting, yeah!

Yes, creative short cut. Sales have proven that you can slap Wolverine on pretty much anything and the comic will sell, which is why Wolverine's on thirty different teams and four different covers every month. Making a character that's angsty female Wolverine is pretty much the lowest common denominator for a desperate sales pitch but hey, the majority of greasy neckbeards that get off to their favorite characters abruptly being female... well, you guys eat that shit right up.

.44 Magdalene
04-12-2009, 08:30 PM

And your argument on boob'd superheroes would be sound if not for your refusal to acknowledge that some of those characters are fucking good, and for a time beat out their male predecessors depending on brand and era.
