I will always remember the interceptions he made on Peyton Manning from about 3 feet in front of him. Jay Fiedler too but he's no Manning.
And I think the play where he did a front flip over a linemans back, landed on his feet, and sacked Chad Pennington was one of the coolest football plays ever.

I'm surprised people on TV find this timing "interesting," the Patriots probably told him he wasn't a lock to make the team.

The report released is he went to Belicheck to retire and was told he had a spot on the team if he didn't want to retire.
It's interesting how some guys Belicheck makes the tough decisions but others he seems sentimental...
Bledsoe gets delt, Milloy gets cut, Gash gets cut... but then guys like Teddy and Troy Brown get leave with there respect.
Lots of great games and great plays...
I think this now leaves Kevin Faulk as the only player who was on the 1996 team that lost the superbowl.. 5 appearances, 3 wins... not a bad 13years for Teddy..
The video from Jacksonville before the game... everyone putting on their game faces and getting ready and he's on the field playing with his kids...
Patriots have always had a history of good LBs... Tippet, Nelson, Vincent Brown, Ted Johnson, Ted Bruschi... now Mayo gets to carry the torch...

It wasnt a massive stroke, it was a minor one that left no lingering effects. I am sure it was no fun, but coming back from it was not that impressive. it wasnt a Stroke in the normal sense...he had a hole in his heart that caused a minir issue.

I believe the year of his stroke is when they began to start using 2 players for his position more than normally just as a precaution and as a rush to get someone developed in case he had to retire early.

That doesn't seem to benefit the Browns that much. They lose their #1 WR and either their starter QB or backup to Quinn and all they get in return is probably a mid to low 1st round pick.

<font color=goldenrod>Actually the Browns might be getting the receiver from the Giants too....I dunno, cause that would somewhat short the Broncs who are losing their #1 even though they want to get rid of him.
I dunno, the report I read was just sorta worded "Marshall to Cleveland, Anderson to Denver, Giants get Edwards and trade a receiver and pick" so I just initially guessed Denver would get the WR replacement</font>

Giants roster is much harder to forecast than last year though.</font>
I am a huge Giants fan and Nicks did look great, but all of his great plays were in the 4th quarter at the end of the game against the 4th string Defense. I would like to see him get some chances with the 1st or second team just to see what happens.

This puzzled me as well. I guess this is why I don't coach in the NFL, but I at least figured that since this was the third pre-season game that Nicks would get a little time with the first string. I was hoping to see Barden get in there as well but to no avail.

If this deal goes down, I wouldn't be shocked to see Hixon get traded out plus a pick from the Giants. I can't see the Giants keeping Hixon over Steve Smith, being that they invested a draft pick in Smith and Hixon was acquired elsewhere. None of the other Giants receivers really are worth much as trade bait.

Good showing by #4 tonight. If three quarters of a meaningless pre-season game are any indication, Brett is in for one of the biggest role changes of his career. I'm just wondering if, once the regular season starts, he can resist the temptation to just audible deep streaks to Berrian or Wade every down.
Favre4Ever, do you watch the NFL because you are a fan of the sport, or just because it happens to be the sport that Bret Favre plays?

Orton has a dislocated knuckle. Simms has a high ankle sprain. Only other QBs on the roster are Tom Brandstater and Ingle Martin. Hoping they just give Tom the whole of the last preseason game, he looked good in the second half of the Bears game and I'm curious to see what he can do.

I think the commentators were trying to taunt the Broncos fans when he came in. I heard them mention that he was a 6th round draft pick a couple of times like he was going to be the next Tom Brady or something.
Although that was the first time I had seen him play and I was pleasantly surprised with him.

Jacksonville is a horrible football town. When they tried to host the Super Bowl, it was a disaster. There was one hotel and 40 taxi cabs for thousands of people. It's hard to believe that Jacksonville has a team and not Los Angeles. Hell, I'd give Chicago a second team before Jacksonville a team.

Least we not forget that Jacksonville was picked for the Expansion team over Baltimore in 1995. I even remember that the team was gonna be called the Bombers, they were so sure the NFL would pick Baltimore, but no.. Kinda funny that all 5 cities/areas in contention for Expansion in 1995 got teams eventually through relocation: St Louis got the Rams, Baltimore got the Browns and Tennessee got the Oilers (though it would have been Memphis through expansion, not Nashville), and the only city to not have an NFL team after all the dust settled was L.A.
http://www.logoserver.com/football/BaltimoreBombers93a.GIF
For all the Canadians in attendance, you might remember when Baltimore was in the CFL and won the Grey Cup. The city was so pissed at the NFL and Paul Tagliabue, but the best thing they did about it was join the CFL...lol
People around here were actually surprised that Tagliabue let Model move the Browns, a lot of people felt that he had some sort of Vendetta against Baltimore.

There was a team in the CFL based out of Baltimore? I did not know that
Droford
09-02-2009, 02:05 AM
Yep. They won the Grey Cup in 1995 and got run out of Baltimore (moved to Montreal) when the CFL was embarassed by an American team winning the Grey Cup and Art Model announcing he was moving the Browns to Baltimore. In 94 they were originally called the CFL Colts but the NFL sued so they went without an official name and then in 95 they were the Stallions.
The American CFL Expansion was poorly thought out anyway. Baltimore was the furthest city north of all of the teams (Sacramento, Birmingham, Shreveport, Las Vegas, Memphis and San Antonio).
Odd thing is after watching intently for 2 years, I can still watch a CFL game that they throw on at like 3 am and enjoy it. Only 3 downs? 110 yards? 3 minute warnings? Those wacky Canucks..

By the way, when Philly signed VIck, I told everyone it was a great move for them. I'm kinda wavering for some reason though. Not totally based on the few plays he ran in the preseason. Just the fact that I originally just figured it could only help to have someone with his athletic talent on the field. Now I'm realizing he kinda just makes the offense all tricky and fancy when it wasn't necessary. I think they work better being basic and more "vanilla" for lack of a better term.

I for one, am shocked. Sinorice Moss has been nothing but a disappoint as a pick at least in my eyes up until this pre-season. I hope he can carry this small success into the regular season and contribute. Nobody has broken out at the WR position and likely the Giants will be receiving by committee this year.

<font color=goldenrod>Yeah, I'm really hoping someone can step it up. Looking at the roster, I think there is still a chance the Giants take 7 wideouts, gives them more options if someone gets hot. Since I'm bored, I'm looking through the positions:
QB: They only took 2 last year because they needed 2 kickers, but I think they'll stick with just Manning and Carr again. I have a hard time seeing both Bomar and Woodson getting claimed, so one of them can stay on the practice squad.
RB: Jacobs, Bradshaw, and Ware are all there...and I'm guessing they'll take a 4th, which will be either Patrick Allen or someone that gets dropped from another team.
FB: Madison Hedgecock
WR: After tonight it's safe to say that 6 have spots sealed: Smith, Hixon, Manningham, Nicks, Barden, Moss. Still an offchance Derek Hagan makes it, if Tyree made the team it would solely be due to past reputation with Coughlin.
TE: Boss and Beckum are both there...I'd rank Matthews ahead of Johnson due to blocking ability. So it looks like Darcy is on the cutting room floor, unless they were to opt to bring 4 TE in lieu of a 7th WR.
OL: Diehl, Seubert, O'Hara, Snee, McKenzie, Boothe, Beatty, Reyes...considering how durable the starters have been I'd say those 8 are more than enough. Koets and Whimper are no great loss.
DE: Tuck, Umenyiora, and Kiwanuka give 3 strong, but there will probably be one more. I'd say Tollefson is a safe bet to return, and probably the best option.....though if there is a way to forecast if a team would grab Maurice Evans if they tried to place him on the practice squad, I'd keep him.
DT: Canty, Robbins, Bernard, and Cofield are all there...but Coughlin traditionally carries five and I doubt that will be any different this year especially with injury concerns. Jay Alford is probably going on IR so I'd tag Leger Douzable as his potential replacement.
LB: I see 8 going here...Pierce, Clark, Kehl, DeOssie, Blackburn, Sintim, Goff, Wilkinson. When Boley comes off the suspended list for week 2, odds are either Goff or Wilkinson gets the axe.
CB: Ross, Webster, Dockery, and Thomas are there.....but there are a ton of undrafted free agents going for that 5th spot. Bruce Johnson, Travonti Johnson, DeAndre Wright, etc.
S: Sorta like a lot of positions on the team, most of them are set but still one open slot. Johnson, Phillips, and Brown are there, I'd guess Rashad beats out Vince Anderson for the final slot.
K/P: Tynes and Feagles.
We'll see Saturday I suppose. I love following the blogs on cutdown day.</font>

09-04-2009, 01:24 AM
I think Goff goes over Wilkinson. Wilkinson has a couple injury issues but has shown some solid potential when given the chance to play. I can't see the team keeping 7 WRs. I think they're more likely to add that spot at DT or RB.

I just dont get it...fire a guy who sucks and replace him with his understudy.
Alex Van pelt is now in charge of the offense after one season as an NFL coach. ONE.
I hope they just call it in now, lose all 16 so we can finally be rid of the worst coaching staff I have ever seen.
Third OC axed this week. Must be something in the water or in this case the playbooks.

Alex Van Pelt? Does he have dirt on ownership or something? It seemed like he was backup qb forever and now he's the OC?
He was a piss poor athlete but a hell of a QB mind, so he stuck around 10 years. I liked him alot. I think he could be a great coach...but He went from player, to assistant for UB (Yes, the UB) then one season as a under qualified QB coach, now he is an OC.

Found this fact amusing though.
From Wikipedia...
"As a result of his negative rushing total (-5 yards) during the 2009-10 season prior to the suspension, Blount holds the unusual distinction of having a 1,000-yard season with the Ducks (1,002 yds last year), but less than 1,000 yards over his entire NCAA career."

It's really not. Sure, it's not a good thing, but come on. This is such a knee jerk reaction. Football is a violent game, and emotions run high. If some punk 3rd string white kid runs up and smacks you on the shoulder and starts talking shit, are you just gonna stand there and take it?

If you are Oregon, a story being out there about someone fighting is not as damaging to the image of the program as a clear as day video that will be shown for years to come of your star player punching a guy in the face after a loss.

I think if it was more of a brawl or a fight, where the focus was not all on one guy, it would have been different. The fact that it was so clear that he was simply being trash talked to and then punched the guy in the face is what makes it bad.

Patriots also cut Andrew Walter leaving them with undrafted Brian Hoyer as their only back-up QB. Julian Adelman (WR they drafted this year) played QB in college though so who knows? Everyone seems to think they are gonna trade for AJ Feeley but for some reason I don't think they are gonna do that.

<font color=goldenrod>Giants are one cut away from finalizing the roster, some odd choices so far. They have 10 OL and the indication is that none of them are going to be cut, just seems like way too many...so I'm guessing the final cut winds up being Derek Hagan. At the same time, they are only carrying 3 safeties. My hope is that they have their eyes on potential waiver guys because I really don't see the point in keeping Guy Whimper or something.</font>

3 RB, when Ware is a little banged up and Jacobs always gets injured at some point.
7 WR, which I don't mind but still a little surprising.
10 OL, that's a lot for any team, especially one with one of the best lines in the league. No reason to carry a guy like Whimper when we have Beatty supplanting him as the young tackle in the making.
3 S, really not too comfortable with the secondary depth. I'm shocked one of the undrafted free agent safeties didn't get in there.
So we'll see what happens. I trust Tom and Jerry's judgment but right now the numbers just don't make sense to me.</font>

Brian Brohm got cut by the Packers.
Sucks to be him I guess.
Colts had some intresting cuts. Cut Terrance Taylor who was a 4th round pick and was a DT. I realize we're kinda stacked at that position now, but it was still a bit of a shock. I thought for sure they'd cut Muir. They kept Curtis Painter which was the best move. Going with 3 QB's seems weird cause Manning never gets hurt, but Painter was way too good to be put on the practice squad. I think Painter has a future in the league as a starter.
The biggest suprise that no Colts fan on the boards seem to be talking about is the fact that the Colts are going with only 4 recievers. Thats pretty weird. I woulda thought atleast 5. But nope, its Wayne, Gonzales, Collie ( gunna be a stud ) and Garcon. I think Polian is eyeing another reciever somewhere. Maybe via trade or on waivers. I cant see them just sticking with 4 recievers, but when i think about it, maybe they do. Dallas Clark lines up in the slot alot. They kept 4 TE's, 3 of which are pass catchers, the other being primarily a blocker. If a reciever goes down, they could move Dallas to the slot and bring in Tamme or Santi. But if Dallas goes down, then there's problems.
I love cut day.

Sounds like they are going to try the 2 TE formation like New England and a few others have done last few years. It gives you extra blocking on the sides for runs and when you need more WRs, you just shift them out more.

And KC is going to be destroyed, that 11 is probably too small but they don't do college lines in the NFL. Baltimore by at least 2 TDs.

Freddie Mitchell AKA First Down Freddie AKA FredEx AKA The People’s Champion (with requisite belt), formerly of the Philadelphia Eagles, hasn’t played in an NFL game since 2004. But don’t worry, Freddie’s kept busy in the years since. He became a substitute teacher (http://deadspin.com/217314/in-case-you-were-wondering-what-freddie-mitchell-has-been-up-to-lately) (which lasted only a short while after being relieved of his duties due to his practice of asking high school girls for their numbers). He then opened a BBQ Joint (http://deadspin.com/5081259/freddie-mitchell-wants-to-put-his-meat-in-your-mouth) (which got into a bit of trouble after seven pounds of weed were delivered to the restaurant). But the ever resilient Mitchell has bounced back with his greatest product yet…
http://www.therookiesblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/mpc-239x300.jpg
AllXClub’s Magic Power Coffee. And right now for you, the lucky reader, Freddie is hosting an “Invitation Only: Special Pre-Launch, September 1 – September 15″. (He’ll tell you all about it on Twitter (http://twitter.com/FreddieMitchell).) But what is AllXClub’s Magic Power Coffee you might ask? According to their website (http://www.allxclubpro.com/2620501/mpc_prelaunch.htm), “Magic Power Coffee is the world’s first “fantasy” beverage. It’s like someone dropped two Viagra® in a cup of Starbucks® … then stirred in a potent ‘passion elixir’ for her! Increase the sensation and the satisfaction of your love making, every time.”
Now you might ask, “Why would I want Viagra coffee when I could have a regular Viagra and/or regular coffee?” The answer is I have no fucking idea. But then again, have we ever had an idea what the hell FredEx is thinking? All I can say is best of luck to Mr. Mitchell on his Magic Boner Coffee.

I guess Fred-Ex does have something for Harrison now.... :)
The Seymour move is surprising a bit, but makes sense. He and Wilfork are both in their last years, plus I think Brady has 2yr left which is usually when they redo his deal. Gotta keep Wilfork.
Plus you get a 1st round pick, it's the raiders so we'll assume top 10.
What I find really funny is the Raiders may only have him for 1yr... he's a free agent after this year... I mean they could franchise him... They said he's in the best shape of his career so he could have a monster year in Oakland and then break the bank.
as for O'Connell, good move by Det, use the waiver move and get a draft pick for nothing. I wonder how much of the Jets getting him was to pick his brain about the Pats offense.
The word is here he has good physical tools but couldn't grasp the offense... otherwise they never would have cut him.
as for "lights out" he's saying she was drunk and he was trying to get her to stay while he got her a ride.
She says it's not possible, that she's allergic to allergic to alcohol which is why she got her name.
As much as I'm not a fan of his, I'll give him the benefit of innocent till proved guilty, it was a citizens arrest by her on charges of assault and imprisonment or something like that, and it's up to the SD DA to investigate and decide if charges should be pressed.

The Seymour trade just makes no sense for the Raiders. He's not as big of a difference maker as he was a few years ago, and odds are the Patriots' incoming first rounder will be in the first draft class with slotted rookie salaries, so they won't have to pay their Top 5 pick $30 million guaranteed, either.
Just a stroke of genius on New England's part when it comes to the draft (again). They know they're likely going to be drafting in the last 5 picks of the draft every year, so they go out every couple years and trade for a top first round pick to constantly add top talent. When that player gets expensive, rinse and repeat the process. It's like a small market baseball team constantly churning out top prospects.

They know they're likely going to be drafting in the last 5 picks of the draft every year, so they go out every couple years and trade for a top first round pick to constantly add top talent. When that player gets expensive, rinse and repeat the process. It's like a small market baseball team constantly churning out top prospects.
They don't even need to draft that high either with the Raider's pick since it could have more value to another team and trade that pick for a future pick or a few lower round picks for more depth players.

<font color=goldenrod>McNabb arrested for assaulting tailor
September 7, 2009 11:46 PM

Eagles QB Donovan McNabb was arrested this morning on assault charges at a local Men's Warehouse, where McNabb was being fitted for a suit. Witnesses say a fight broke out between McNabb and the tailor. While the tailor was helping his client, McNabb became angry and attacked. When police got McNabb in custody, the Eagles QB was shouting he did not know it was a tie. Appearently the Eagles QB didn't understand what the tailor was doing when he put the tie around his neck. McNabb's lawyer issued a comment stating "his client is only being treated in this manner because he is one of <i>those</i> athletes".</font>

MTV star Tila Tequila said steroids may have been part of the problem late Saturday night when San Diego Chargers outside linebacker Shawne Merriman(notes) allegedly assaulted her, according to ProFootballTalk.
Tequila tweeted a whole slew of posts about the incident and has since removed some of them but one of them read "Steroid Abuse Can Cause Aggression" and linked to a story about Merriman's 2007 four-game suspension due to a violation of the league's performance-enhancing substance policy.
Merriman is building a story that he was saving Tequila from herself by not letting her drive home drunk, and Tequila hasn't bothered to say her side of exactly what happened. She says that will change today, what she's calling "judgment day."
So be sure you haven't heard the last of this PR War. It'll likely to drag on for a while.

Not getting rid of it exactly. I believe the final year of the current CBA calls for there to be no cap, somewhat as a motivator for the NFLPA and the owners to make a deal. Not working though. If no deal is reached soon, next year will be uncapped and the following season will likely be a lock out.

so day 3, does Seymour show?
If I understand correctly he only has X# of days to report and take a physical, but the raiders approved the deal before he took the physical so they lost the right to veto due failed physical.
Harrison had some great quotes
"Who would be thrilled to go to the Oakland Raiders?," Harrison, now an NBC analyst, told PFT. "Maybe somebody who's happy to just get a chance but not a guy like Richard Seymour, a five-time Pro Bowler. For a veteran player to go to Oakland at this juncture it's just difficult."
"Put yourself in his position. He's going from a first-class organization to one of the worst in the NFL. You have the head coach fighting the assistant coaches, the owner involved in the day-to-day operations, guys who don't believe in the quarterback. ... Tom Brady to JaMarcus Russell? Come on. Is that something to look forward to? Why would he be excited?"
I also like how the Raiders are saying Seymour won't report due to a problem with the pats, Belicheck just says "We don't have right to the player so I'm not allowed to comment"....
Now yesterday a word came out the issue is he will report but he's either trying to get his new deal or a deal with the raiders they wont franchise him.

Raiders are such a mess last 6-8 years that in order for them to improve, they literally would need to get rid of everything (owner, GM, management, coaches, a good chunk of the roster).
Lions managed to go 0-16 last year and yet they still have more wins in last 6-8 years than the Raiders. This is the same team (Lions) that once made Barry Sanders retire since he knew they stunk.

Im thinking about taking the drive up to Dover for NFL Betting on Sunday (starts tomorrow but Ive got other plans). Delaware's NFL betting is set up as a parlay system with a minimum of 3 games to pick, maximum of 12 and a minimum wager of $2 (not sure if thats per game or per parlay). Odds will also differ from Las Vegas, especially in the fact that all point spreads will be 1/2 points to avoid ties. I think I saw that there were 3 levels of tickets as well, with the lower the point spread the higher the odds (Teasers and Super Teasers I thinl). I think the basic one pays 6:1 for winning all 3 games. They supposedly have a pretty sweet setup with a huge video wall which would make watching the games on Sunday awesome.
Im thinking about Minnesota/NOLA/Baltimore depending on the spreads..

Looking over the Patriots 2003 playbook, just found out that when the QB says "OMAHA" after breaking the huddle it means that the play clock is running out and all shifts/motions are called off. Thus the players get into the finalized formations rather than shifting into them over the course of the cadence. Remember somebody asked why they always said Omaha a few years ago, well there ya go

Saw this on deadspin, have got to post it:
From the Ravens why your team sucks:
When I moved to Baltimore 5 years ago I was excited to be going to a city with such a rich baseball tradition. I was sorely disappointed when I arrived and realized that baseball had no place in this city. No, there was only room for one team and it was the God-awful fucking Ravens. You've never seen so many fucking retards wearing purple in your life. Not only that but it would seem that once you become a Ravens fan you are required to start speaking like the Macho Man Randy Savage, "Oooh yeah, the Ravens, they're coming to git ya, ooh yeahhh, John Harbaugh, MIss Elizabeiiiith, ooh yeah".
They have little fucking clubs called Ravens Roosts, where apparently people get together and compare who is the fattest, most backwater, purple covered douchenozzle. I hate the fucking Ravens, and their fans.
I dont know a single Ravens fan that talks like Savage. And my Flacco Authentic Jersey is the black one, which is awesome..I hate the color purple. We also have a RR in town but since I work every other Sunday they wouldnt let me be a member.

I agree with Collinsworth in that if you are unfortunate enough to lose the coin toss, your team should man up and play defense and stop the other team. And I was kind of bummed over the result, but really the Steelers didn't look that great on either side of the ball. They had no running game and Rothlisberger got sacked like 5 times, and I dont think you can blame it all on the titans defense..
The Steelers defense is going to be really affected if Big Hair is out for any length of time too. EDIT: 3-6 weeks or longer for a possible sprained MCL.
