oh by the way, I have no issue with Favre's last TD pass at the end of the game. I hate the whole "running up the score" argument. It's so stupid because you are always taught to finish out the game and never let up. So just because you are up big you should settle down? I never got that.

I get it when one team is clearly just trying to beat up a noticeably weaker team, but Dallas is mad because they wanted to quit and Minnesota wanted to keep playing. Suck it up, boys.

From a Favre-hating perspective, a Jets-Saints Super Bowl would be the best possible outcome. Not only does Favre choke in the NFC Championship game again, but the team he torpedoed last season makes it to the Super Bowl with a rookie quarterback who doesn't take stupid risks in the playoffs.

For a team like the Chargers that depend mostly on their offensive passing game and their "sure thing" field goal percentage, when your QB and your kicker are having the worst night of their lives, it's a done deal.

However, Phil Rivers had a much better night than Nate Kaeding did. Jesus.

BCWWF

Alright, here's my analysis guys. Sorry it took so long to bring it to you.

First I'll start in the AFC. Love that the Jets got there. For one, I'm still rooting for the football Gods to seek revenge on the Colts, and the Jets beating them would be just that. I'm also glad that the Chargers lost, just because it shuts up all of the air bags who couldn't stop gloating about how great and how hot the Chargers were. I'm not surprised at all that they choked.

As far as the next game, I think it is unwise to write the Jets off automatically, as some already have. Pointing out the regular season at this juncture is pointless. The last game between the Colts and Jets is almost meaningless. The Jets began to put everything together, and any deficiencies they had in the regular season are history now. If the Jets secondary can remain as dominant as it has all season, and postseason, the Colts could be in for a fight. Darrelle Revis and Co. could really fluster Peyton and Co, if they take away the Colts passing game.
Monday Prediction: Colts 65-35 Jets (subject to change)

Now for the NFC. Not surprised at all by either result. Well, a bit surprised at how bad Dallas showed up. But not surprised that they lost. This goes back to the idiots on ESPN who can do nothing but talk up bogus theories of "Dallas is so confident right now" as if that suddenly makes them a heavy favorite to beat the Vikings in Minnesota. I think position by position, it's hard to find more than maybe two or three that I'd prefer the Cowboys' player to the Vikings. Then the Metrodome has been defended with ease by the Vikings all season.

The talking heads also thought the Saints were dead in the water because they played poorly down the stretch. That's stupid too. The Saints had nothing to play for (a loss combined with another team's loss moving you from first to second seed is hardly "life or death.") The Saints had it locked up, they were strong all year, and they were going to overpower Arizona because they are a more complete team. Arizona is flawed.

Now, the NFC Championship is the best possible match-up of any in the playoffs, if you ask me. There's not two teams that are as good and match up as well in the NFL. Both are complete teams with good quarterbacks, strong defenses, and diverse offenses. Personally, I think the Vikings have more talent man-to-man, but I think the Saints have to be the slightly favored team going into this. Although I slightly favor the Saints, I am still confident that the Vikings will overcome the Super Dome crowd and play up to their potential, for once.
Monday Prediction: Saints 55-45 Vikings (subject to change)

*NOTE: The predictions are percentages, not scores.

Denver enters the defensive coordinator derby (http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/01/18/denver-enters-the-defensive-coordinator-derby/)

Posted by Mike Florio on January 18, 2010 5:59 PM ET
In an offseason that has seen plenty of defensive coordinator jobs open up, another one has become available, in an unexpected location.

Jay Glazer of FOX reports that Broncos coach Josh McDaniels and defensive coordinator Mike Nolan have "mutually decided" to part ways.

The move comes after a season in which Nolan's presence increased the team's performance from No. 29 to No. 7 in total defense.

The reason for the separation isn't known (yet), but the development puts Nolan in play for vacancies in Miami, Buffalo, and Chicago.

Nolan, who uses a base 3-4 scheme, would be a good fit with the Dolphins.

He also could be a fit in Arizona, if coach Ken Whisenhunt decides to dump Bill Davis after the Cardinals surrendered 90 points in two postseason games -- and if Whisenhunt opts to embrace the 3-4 approach used by his former team, the Steelers.

In Arizona, Nolan would be returning the the NFC West, where he served as head coach of the 49ers from 2005 through the first seven games of 2008.

Jesus fucking Christ, come on now. This'll be what? The 4th or 5th DC in as many years?

What is it about Leslie Frazier that keeps everyone from wanting to hire him? His name comes up for every job opening, and I get why, but you'd think in as many as he's rumored to interview for he'd get one. I mean his defenses seem to be a lot better than a lot of guys that end up with head coaching jobs. The guy must have the worst job interview technique ever.

I remember reading last year about him having great interviews, including a good one with Denver I believe, so I can't figure it out either

Supreme Olajuwon
01-20-2010, 09:03 AM
I think up to this point he's just been the token black interview that every team has to do, but nobody's seriously considered him.

DaveBrawl
01-20-2010, 09:14 AM
That's why I'm wondering, in the past sure he was just to pass the Rooney rule, but at this point there aren't any real big name candidates left so why isn't he given the serious consideration such as the Josh McDaniels or Jim Caldwell. Guys who have had some success on other levels like Frazier, but constantly get put over him.

Now Buffalo for example didn't even need him to qualify for the Rooney Rule since they interviewed Perry Fewell but they interviewed him anyway and still ended up with Chan Gailey. Now I could chalk that up to management with Buffalo, but with as many teams as he gets interviewed for not all of them should turn him down without something going on.

Reavant
01-20-2010, 11:45 AM
apparently buffalo was looking for a guy with head coaching experience and an offensive background

DaveBrawl
01-20-2010, 11:51 AM
Yeah I didn't mean just Buffalo, since like you're saying they wanted something completely different, but it seems like he's been passed up by teams that want exactly what he brings in. It's just wierd to me. It's almost like they have made him a joke.

Supreme Olajuwon
01-20-2010, 12:26 PM

Jets are sorta like the Mets in 2006. If not, all the attention will focus back to the older, more popular team once the offseason starts.

Big Fat Mike
01-24-2010, 12:09 PM
I will say this now....

There is absolutely no way that the Jets beat the Colts unless Peyton Manning leaves the game early with a severe injury. He is just too damn good to beat, I don't care what defense he is playing against. Manning will put up at least 35 points, and without defensive scores ( not likely) the Jets just won't be able to keep up. Sanchez is going to be one of the better quarterbacks in the league someday, but right now he's too green ( pun intended) to get the job done in such a high pressure situation. He can't and won't lead the Jets' offense to a win against a high scoring team.

That being said, I think that the Jets had a great season and I have a newfound respect for the organization. I think that they have been exciting to watch, especially in the last 7 weeks. The job that Ryan and his coaching staff has done with the defense and the running game has been nothing short of spectacular. I might be a Giants fan, but I'm looking forward to the 3:30 game the most. The likelyhood of the Jets winning today is very small, but I hope that they give Indy hell anyway.

Nark Order
01-24-2010, 12:23 PM
If the Colts can shut down a good portion of the Jet's rushing game then it's all over. Mark Sanchez is too much of a rookie to be any good in such a high profile game. Even in the Chargers game that they won, he looked mad sloppy.

Big Fat Mike
01-24-2010, 12:28 PM
The Colts aren't the Chargers. To specify, Peyton Manning isn't Phil Rivers. A reason to believe that the Jets' defense won't be able to stop Manning? Rex Ryan is 1-6 against the greates quarterback to ever live, and the one win came in week 16 when Indy packed it in midway through the third quarter.

What real fan is really neutral, unless their team is a complete non-issue in the league? I can't really see how someone who has a favorite team can't have strong opinions about a lot of other teams in the league.

Also can't stand Favre winning in any capacity on any team he latches onto. So I want him out.
That leaves the Saints as the team I'd most like to see win.

So glad the Chargers and Cowboys are out. Hate Jerry Jones and Tony Romo. Sorry Narc, Philip Rivers is a clown and LT is the biggest baby ever

I just don't want The Vikings to win because Favre is on the team. Don't really have a problem with the rest of the team

I say latches onto because he clearly just doesn't want to retire and will play wherever will have him. I'd say at least he wants to be on teams that compete, but from there he'll go anywhere. In fact, The Vikings was also to stick it to the Packers which is even worse.

The Vikings were still a solid team without Favre last year. They probably don't beat out the Packers for the NFC North title without him (and don't hang on for the bye), but they'd still be a playoff team.

With that said, I hope the noise in the SuperDome blows out his eardrums tonight. I heard on ESPN this morning that he'll be wearing the Vikings playcalls on a wrist band for the first time tonight and the writing was too small for him to read. :D

No complaints, better team won. I kinda felt at half time ok, we've scored too early. We've typically been more of a 2nd half team the last few weeks. Total reverse today. And when Shonn Greene went off I knew they'd take care of a solo Thomas Jones no problem. Secondary was pretty iffy today too.

This play off run has been a complete surprise so it's been fun. All the best for the Super Bowl Colts.

Colts took the Jets best shot in the first half and were only down 4. That TD right before the half was huge for them. No way the Jets could have duplicated what they did in the 1st half again in the 2nd, I knew they were gonna lose without having a bigger lead after that.

When i say "supposed to", its like a metaphor for like some kind of "higher power" looking over the Saints. I mean, things like this happen, but c'mon. Holding on to the ball is one of the fundamentals of the game. Just like dribbling a basketball, just like throwing a baseball to your first baseman. I could see a team in the NFC championship doing 2, maybe 3 FUMBLES, but 5? This is destiny for the Saints.

After 1998, if Ryan Longwell had taken a field goal and missed, it would have been devastating.

However, arguably the worst play of the game was the 12th man penalty with 19 seconds remaining. I would give Longwell a 70 percent chance of making that kick for the win, and in reality the likelihood would probably have been a lot higher.

I hate it more when that occurs because ESPN had been predicting and hyping Saints v Colts since mid to late season when both were undefeated. Similar to last year's NBA playoffs where all they promoted was Kobe vs Lebron for the Finals then got "sad" when Magic upset the Cavs. Too much hype or focus on Peyton vs Brees when in reality both teams defense carried them to the playoffs.

His last pass with Atlanta was also an interception.

For as much as I just want him to go away (I'll admit I did crack a bit of a smile when he needed help getting off the field after the first INT), he put together a damn good year. It's just a shame that Brad Childress is one of the worst coaches in the league.

With that said, now everyone in Minnesota knows what Packers fans went through all those years...coming so close even in games you had no business winning, only to have Brett get caught up in the moment and make a really bad decision.

If he does decide to come back for one last year, though, I do hope that he actually mans up and goes through an entire training camp. No one else in that locker room is getting coddled that way, and it sets a bad example. If Adrian Peterson, Jared Allen, Sidney Rice, etc. don't get the luxury of coming into camp the last week in August, neither should he.
