LOL, Tom Brady is going to sit in the pocket and have a field day with the Giants weak secondary, he's going to systematically pick them apart. This isn't some second year QB, or a 38 year old QB playing in -20 conditions, this is the best QB of our generation, and arguably ever. The giants might score some points, but there is no way they are stopping the offensive juggernaut that is the New England Patriots.
yes because the Giants defensive line doesn't ever get any sacks or pressure
The Lone Wolf

The Giants wont be able to win with their d-line alone like seemingly every giant fan believes they will. Plus they wont be able to stack the line anyway since they will have to drop into coverage to try their best to cover the pats wide recievers.

Why couldn't Burress jus say "yea Pats will kill us 50-0, they are that damn good, we have no chance". And then of course fire up his team behind closed doors. And when has a Patriot ever predicted a win, it's always one of the other dummies.

Why not just say nothing? Why predict any type of score? You can still be entertaining without doing that garbage.

Tom Brady is going to have a field day unless Lawrence Taylor , Carl Banks , and Pepper Johnson come out of retirement and gang rape him on sunday.

Wouldn't put gang raping past LT for a second there, btw.

<font color=goldenrod>Cause Belichick would probably bench anybody who did that.
I hate the fact that Burress guaranteed a win and predicted a score (tho tbh he even said he got his score from 23 being his HS or college number and 17 being his current number). It's gonna be much higher scoring than that.</font>
I'm not totally sold the Patriots will win this game. I seriously think theres something to be said about that week 17 matchup being so close and the fact that New York has won 10 straight road games this year, including in Dallas and Green Bay in a Blizzard. And all my Manning love aside, lets be honest, Eli can dodge bullets right now. This guy is lights out. He's become the man. I also just get the feeling the football Gods are behind Tom Coughlin this year. After all the shit he's put up with coaching this team. All the shit he's had to deal with. You realise this guy practically battled the entire team to believe in him for like 3 years. And he finally won. Takes some real balls to hang in like Coughlin has with the Giants. Takes balls for Eli to step up like he has finally after all the critisim and the Tiki bs.
I think the Giants have a serious shot to win this. There secondary isnt horrible, just rather average. The LB'ers are pretty good and they have the best defensive line in the league.
This game comes down to two things to me. Can the Giants recievers keep from dropping passes and how many holding penaltys will we see called agains the Patriots. There O-line gets away with murder. I mean, most plays might be considered some sort of holding, but they've show replay during games of the Pats Oline literally tackling guys and no flags. There a great offensive line for sure. Probably the best, but seriously, some of the holding penalty's they've gotten away with were unbelievable. Like Troy Polamalu incomplete pass ruling, unbelievable.

Not laughing because of you saying the Giants have a shot, I think they do, but the way they are going about it is hilarious.
I don't see how winning 10 straight road games gives them an advantage.....Patriots won 18 straight games....

I gotta agree with RP, I thought the Pats o-line got away with some shit the first time around.

The Patriots are the Patriots. Everyone expected them to be the best team and win the Superbowl even before they won there first game. No one expected the Giants to be as good as they are and for them to win 10 straight road games, including the ones in the playoffs is very very impressive.

Well I was laughing at that too, since that really isn't what the game comes down to. Its the NFL, they could call holding on every play if they really wanted to. Sure you and Gonzo 'saw' it but you are also biased against the Pats/for the Giants. I mean I could sit here and watch any game and point out a bunch of holding penalties in any game. Maybe it was a little bit more than usual but I dunno, its been like a month since that game and this is the first time I've heard someone mention it.
I dunno, I would think the game would come down to the Patriots stopping the Giants rushing attack and the Giants being to able get the Patriots' offense off the field. That's just me though

also keep in mind 3/5ths of the OL for the Pats didn't play against the Giants.
on a seperate issue... must be slow in polotics... Arlen Spector wants to investigate why godell ordered the spygate tape to be destroyed.
Kinda funny the NY Times run this story the friday before the super bowl...
on another side note... the Patriots applied for 2 trademarks.
"19-0" and "19-0 the perfect season".
They applied for it 3days before the AFC championship game, so the NY papers is using this as the "see, the Pats slipped up and made a prediction"
The Pats have been already going after unlicensed merchandise, and they got shutdown a sight www.19and0.org
this is nothing new... John Calapari trademarked "refuse to lose" and Pat Rilley owns the rights to "threepeat"
even funnier is in response the NY post trade markeked "18-1"

Sure holding happens every game, no lie there. Giants could have gotten called on some stuff too I'm sure. I'm obviously rooting for the Giants but I'm not blind to the point where I'm blatantly biased towards everything. Its not even that someone gets away with one or two blatant penalties, its the fact the referees miss it and 9 times out of 10 they are within 10 feet with a perfect view.

Dunno, most be home-town biased because I watch every play of every game and I don't see where they're holding more or less then anyone else.
That being said, for years the Broncos were always considered the best OL in the league and also the dirtiest, so I tend to think if an OL is playing very well, people assuming they are holding and clipping and such because they don't think it's possible for the OL to do that well w/o cheating.
on the other "story" Arlen Spector was quoted in an ESPN interview that he first questioned this before the Eagles game and didn't get any response.
Kinda funny, a Senator using his power to try and stong arm the NFL because he thinks maybe his favorite team got cheated...

Looks like Roger Goodell is in some trouble.
He's been summoned by the Senate to talk about why he destroyed the evidence in the Patriots spying incident.
Its pretty lame that this senator waits until the night before the superbowl to do this. Obviously he has an agenda.

Its pretty lame that this senator waits until the night before the superbowl to do this. Obviously he has an agenda.
yeah, he says he sent his original letter in november (right before the philly game) wanting to know if what happened would have an effect on the game and if it had an effect on the superbowl pats vs. eagles and never got a response, the NFL claims they "just got his letters now".
I love Godells response today
The reason I destroyed the tapes is they were totally consistent with what the team told me," Goodell said during his State of the NFL speech. "It was the appropriate thing to do and I think it sent a message.
"The actual effectiveness of taping and taking of signals from opponents - it is something done widely in many sports. I think it probably had limited, if any effect, on the outcome of games.
"That doesn't change my perspectve on violating rules and the need to be punished."
"We wanted to take and destroy that information," he said. "They may have collected it within the rules, but we couldn't determine that. So we felt that it should be destroyed."
He made it clear he's convinced the Patriots have acted in good faith since the taping was discovered.
"I think it was the best way to make sure the Patriots followed my instructions, to make sure that bit of information would not appear anywhere again," he said. "If it did, I'd know they didn't hand me all the information. Not having those tapes out there, now I know if something arises, they didn't tell me the truth."

on a note of more interest from the press confrence.
They're considering re-seading playoff teams, so a 10-6 wild card team would be at home and host a 9-7 division winner.
not sure how I feel about this one...
They're basiclly trying to do away with teams who have locked it up in a shitty division resting people, so all the games count...
dunno, I kinda think if you're 12-3 the last week, you earned the right to do whatever you want with your players.
how are they gunna make the games count?
VonErichLives

how are they gunna make the games count?
thats what I couldn't quite figure out, I think he meant it makes it count for lower teams, but they're normally still going all out for a shot at the playoffs...
oh and just another Spector thing I just heard... to top it all off, one of his biggest contributers is comcast... so this isn't as much to do w/ the Eagles as it is the whole NFL network deal.

So, apprently the NFL has in their copywright of games that you can not view them/show them on a screen bigger then 55 inches.
They send letters to a movie chain that was going to show the game for free on the big screen.
I understand wanting to control your product and all, but you think more viewers = more ad dollars...

I don't know why this is all coming out now but it seems to be a pretty solid argument for why we don't need the bye week before the Super Bowl.

There is way too much shit to squeeze in within one weeks time. There would hardly be time to practice/gameplan with only a week.
VonErichLives
02-02-2008, 06:25 PM
dunno, I always thought the hype was more about more time for the NFL to make it an "event" and any banged up players to heel...
I think most teams do fairly well with gameplans and time w/ only a week off like usual.
oh and this former Pats employee who claims to be the smoking gun and doesn't know why no one contacted him... this is my favorite part
Walsh said he is fearful of potential legal action against him by either the league or the Patriots if he details what he knows. He refused to provide evidence of potential wrongdoing unless ESPN agreed to pay his legal fees related to his involvement in the story, as well as to an indemnity that would cover any damages found against him in court. ESPN denied his requests.
If he's telling the truth he has no worries, if he's not and if he say has team property he stole, then yeah, it's an issue... anyway, I want to hear what he says.
As far as doing what the Pats did prior to this year, it wasn't a rule... so there is no issue there... cause again the issue was never the taping itself because every team does that and whatever else they can, the issue was where they were taping from which only became a rule this year.
On a side note, everyone blamed mangini for it, but it seems it was another staff member who was there back when Belicheck quit the Jets and still has bitter feelings, plus the Jets got caught by the Pats last year filming where they shouldn't be (by last years rules) and the Pats simply told him to move...
anyway, tomorows the game... if the Pats don't win, think anyone will still care about this crap?
It's funny how Spectors real targets doesn't seem to be the Patriots but the NFL... Guess you gotta keep your donaters happy.

all this shit coming out about the Patriots could have come out 2months ago or after the Superbowl. I actually think it sucks alot more for the Giants lol. COMON ELI YOU CAN DO IT!
I've been more about Eli this whole playoffs then i have been about Peyton. I just realised that. I'm really really rooting fro Eli to win this. I think it'd be so damn cool to have brothers win back to back Superbowls. Plus Archie Manning's sperm is probably the most expensive sperm on the market right about now.
VonErichLives

Tippett in the hall, about time!
I'm ok with people who pick the Giants to win w/ reasons like, what they're pass rush could do, Polaxico moving around and taking advantage of the height miss match...
but then you have idiots like Dr. Z...
Why the Giants will win: The Giants will win via the following means: Kawika Mitchell fumble return for 36 yards for a TD, the ball being fumbled by Randy Moss. Lawrence Tynes field goal of 34 yards. Eli Manning pass to Amani Toomer for eight yards and TD. Ahmad Bradshaw eight yards off LT for TD. Extra point successful on each TD but not on the field goal because they don't kick twice. New England will score on Kevin Faulk TD of three yards, followed by an extra point blocked by Justin Tuck, then Laurence Maroney run of six yards for another TD, then Tom Brady pass to Kyle Brady (first double Brady TD in Super Bowl history), each score followed by successful perversion, uh, conversion. The N.Y. defense will hold the Patriots' offense to six points in first half, which will end 6-0 in favor of the aforementioned team, Giants will follow with scores against aging, tiring, depressed and despondent New England defense. Patriots will get two late scores to make the final score respectable and thus end up with the ultimate score which means 20.
I remember years ago when he seemed like he had 1/2 a clue... but the last fews years he's just an scenile old man.
Damon Hack also cnnsi had this to say, which while I don't agree the Giants will win at least makes some sense.
Why the Giants will win: The Giants will win because no team has played better football in the last month. Eli Manning is suddenly a mistake-free quarterback, the Giants are running the ball with force, and the defense is creating pressure and turnovers. Something about Tom Brady's ankle makes me nervous. The Giants gained a lot of confidence with their Week 17 performance against New England, even in defeat. This time, they will shock the world.
The Giants have been hot and Eli has been mistake free the last month, that being said, 2 weeks kills momentum, and the Pats are riding the longest single season win streak in NFL history, the last game looked ugly but they won and they rarely have 2 bad games back to back.
I hate to predict it, but I think it's a blow out in the end... could it be close, sure... anything is possible, but a blow out would shock me much less then a 3point game.

Regardless...the way I see it is, both teams should be riled up 100% anyway. Its the Super Bowl, if you aren't completely riled up just by it being the Super Bowl, you shouldn't be out there, IMO.
I never thought the Giants would make it this far...so no matter what happens, its been an amazing year. But I do believe they can win it. Like 6 hours of hype to go...I can't wait for this game to start.</font>

1) I don't think a Boston reporter had anything to do w/ Arlen Spector
2) if you lived here you'd understand the reports do nothing for the bennefits of the team, sure like most towns people root for their home town teams, but they'd give their arm (or some other part they care about) to break a huge story and especially where Belicheck has run the same "code of silence" with the media Parcelss did, the difference being Parcelss would joke around and give them nibble if it helped parcels, beliceck doesnt and most the sports media here hates him because he makes their job difficult.

Every team I have rooted for has lost.
I am discounting the wildcard because I dont watch the wildcard games (unless the Cowboys were playing obv.).
I went for Dallas... lost.
I went for Seattle... lost.
I went for Colts... lost.
I went for Jacksonville... lost.
I went for Chargers... lost.
I went for Green Bay... lost.
And its funny because now I am rooting for the Patriots because I dont want the Giants to win.
Damn, I am good.

Lost out on some £££ but I really don't mind because that was a GREAT game, best Superbowl in at least 7-8 years. No it wasn't high scoring but it was a fantastic back and forth all game long between two VERY well-coached teams. I fully expect Spagnuolo to leave but if he doesn't look out because that D is pretty young in some key positions and they could be even stronger next year.
Great credit to Eli, he came close to coughing it up a couple times but he hung in there and came through in the clutch. You can't really put the INT on him cause Smith just bobbled it right up to Hobbs. I understand the MVP because of the winning drive but man that D-line deserves all the credit in the world, unreal. Pats didn't even play that badly, they just got bottled up for like 9/10ths of the game.

Oh yeah, because the team is sooooo old and all the young players are leaving...
They'll still win the Division next year and compete for a 1st round bye.
As for the Rams thing, one there is no proof yet, heck this guy who claims it wants legal money to talk to anyone and no one (espn, cnnsi) will give it to him which probably means he's full of shit.
and if he isn't as a player said the other day "If they video taped us walking through the first 3-4 plays that we might do and that's the reason they beat us, then thats on us"
I did like how spector again called for Godell and he responded "Well, I'll be busy w/ the pro bowl, but after that I'll accomidate him".

<font color=goldenrod>A few months ago when giving blood they were handing out free Pats shirts. I realized this past weekend that I still had it...and I wasn't sure what to do with it - burn it, use it as a doormat, wipe my ass with it, etc.
Instead, I kept it intact - and now that the game is over I grabbed a marker and wrote "18-1" on it in huge letters on the front and back and crossed out the Pats logo. I also attached a few images of a camera and wrote "CHOKERS" on it. I am at school now wearing the shirt along with my Giants cap.
Did it just to get a rise out of my huge Pats fan friend...who totally woulda rubbed my face in it had the Pats won. Suffice to say it worked, along with pissing off all the other Pats fans here. The Giants fans love it tho. This is the first time one of my teams has won a title when I could understand what was going on (I was only 2 in 1990), I'm gonna live it up while I can.</font>

I guess I've recovered from watching the Pats crumble in the last minute of the game. Hell of a game for Eli and Giants D especially. Brady played well too, but the O-Line struggled terribly against the blitz. It's too bad that most people will remember this as the game that the Pats choked instead of the game that the Giants beat the heavy favorites.

Splitting hairs really. I think the 'World Champion' moniker is justified since football isn't played anywhere else on the globe. The best talent in the world is in North America (primarily the United States.) Of the 120 or so division 1 college football teams, all the best talent makes its way to the NFL. The best of the best are in the NFL. I would wager anyone that anybody else in the world couldn't field a team to beat the NFL's best, given unlimited resources to do so.

You're raising a logical point, I agree. Until an international team is fielded and competes, then its open for contention. Thats just my take though. Thats why I think its more logical to call them Superbowl Champions, or World Series Champions, or NBA Champions or Stanley Cup Champions etc. Avoid the whole discussion altogether.

I can say with confidence that every NFL team has a serviceable #2 RB that can spell the starter. I'm not saying that the #2 guy is starter material, but its pretty much the standard to have 2 RB's in the NFL now-a-days. I couldn't tell you every teams #2, but they got one.

and I'm sure you have a link to this, especially since there wasn't a rule against taping from the sidelines until 2007, so I find it difficult to believe anyone was guilty of breaking a rule that didn't exist...
oh and Goddell did offer Walsh the legal protection he (waslh) wanted and still Walsh hasn't come forward with anything...
Not only do i have a link, but i'll paste in the thread.
Belichick has been taping since 2000, Goodell tells Specter
By LAURIE KELLMAN, Associated Press Writer
February 13, 2008
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Bill Belichick has been illegally taping opponents' defensive signals since he became the New England Patriots' coach in 2000, according to Sen. Arlen Specter, who said NFL commissioner Roger Goodell told him that during a meeting Wednesday.
"There was confirmation that there has been taping since 2000, when Coach Belichick took over," Specter said.
Specter said Goodell gave him that information during the 1-hour, 40-minute meeting, which was requested by Specter so the commissioner could explain his reasons for destroying the Spygate tapes and notes.
"There were a great many questions answered by Commissioner Goodell," Specter, the senior Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, told reporters after the meeting. "I found a lot of questions unanswerable because of the tapes and notes had been destroyed."
Goodell said Belichick told him he believed the taping was legal; Goodell said he did not concur.
"He said that's always been his interpretation since he's been the head coach," the commissioner said. "We are going to agree to disagree on the facts."
Specter, from Pennsylvania, wants to talk to other league officials about what exactly was taped and which games may have been compromised.
"We have a right to have honest football games," he said.
Goodell noted that "we were the ones that disclosed" the Patriots' illegal taping of the New York Jets' defensive signals in Week 1 of last season. Further, Goodell said, they had an admission by Belichick.
"I have nothing to hide," Goodell said.
Goodell also told Specter that that he doesn't regret destroying the Spygate tapes or the notes.
"I think it was the right thing to do," Goodell said.
Still, Specter wants to know why penalties were imposed on Belichick before the full extent of the wrongdoing was known and the tapes destroyed in a two-week span. Asked if he thinks there was a coverup, Specter demurred.
"There was an enormous amount of haste," Specter said.
He scoffed at the reasons Goodell gave for destroying the tapes and notes, particularly about trying to keep them out of competitors' hands and because Belichick had admitted to the taping.
"What's that got to do with it? There's an admission of guilt, you preserve the evidence," Specter said. As for keeping the tapes out of the hands of others: "All you have to do is lock up the tapes."
Belichick was fined $500,000 and the team was fined $250,000 because of the Spygate incident. The Patriots also forfeited a first-round draft pick.
Specter has questioned the quality of the NFL's investigation into the matter and raised the possibility of congressional hearings if he wasn't satisfied with Goodell's answers. Specter also raised the threat of Congress canceling the league's antitrust exemption and reiterated that in the meeting with Goodell.
Goodell also said he has not heard from Matt Walsh, the former Patriots employee who performed some videotaping duties for the team.
Walsh told The Associated Press last week during the Pro Bowl in Hawaii that he couldn't talk about allegations that he taped a walkthrough practice by the St. Louis Rams before the 2002 Super Bowl. New England, a two-touchdown underdog, won that game 20-17.
Goodell said he has offered Walsh a deal whereby "he has to tell the truth and he has to return anything he took improperly" in return for indemnity. Specter said he, too, wanted to talk to Walsh and perhaps offer a different deal.
Goodell also said he reserves the right to reopen the investigation if more information is uncovered

I thought there wasn't a rule before '07? The senator seems to be implying that it was illegal, but did Goodell say that? While I do think it is fucked up and not really needed, since I don't think they gain much from it during the game (it would be pretty tough to go through the tape and line it up to the certain play during the game, then on top of that be able to see a defensive signal and call an offensive play after that) it is still pretty shady.
VonErichLives

not going to say Goodall lied, but I want to hear it from Goodalls mouth, not a Senator pissed off his team lost in the superbowl.
Stims is right, it wasn't a rule till the start of the 2007 season.
So, how does one break a rule that doesn't exist?
Also, had Belicheck been breaking a rule for 7yrs, I would expect a bigger penalty.
What I find even funnier about this is it's not illegal to tape the signals, it's where you tape them from.
Do the same thing from the press box and your fine...
That stuff isn't used during a game, now in the next meeting could be, but every NFL coach who spoke on TV said that if your a coach and you don't change your signals by the next time you meet a team you deserve not to win.
Jimmy Johnson said on TV that he used to have these tapes but never found them helpful and couldn't get anything from it.
whatever, teams/fans who are jealous of the Patriots success will dwell on this, no one else is going to care.

What rule did the Patriots break though before '07? I thought it was only enforced this past season? I am a having a hard time understanding if Goodell said the tapes before 07 where illegal, or if the senator said that. Senator could have been mistaken on that part. It is still pretty shady regardless, but I don't think they technically broke any rules before the Jets game. It's not like I was the one calling the shots. I get that I am a fan, but I'm not blindly associated to them or something - members of the Patriots probably wouldn't piss on me if I was on fire. I think a lot of people don't understand that but whatever. The tapes are pretty stupid anyway, because I don't think they were taping after the Jets yet they won 17 games in a row after that...(God damn Giants :( )
This argument between you two is pretty hilarious though
I dont know what rule. But Goodall says it was illegal taping. Thats all i know. The whole point is that VEL likes to posts shit and ask me what i think about it in such a smug, ostentatious manner. So i decided to do the same and watch him go full Roger Clemens mode in this thread.

I dunno, I still think there is some grey area inregards to exactly what Goodell told Specter. How could the taping be illegal before this season? I didn't think there was rule...Goodell could have just told Specter said that the Patriots have tapes dating back to 2000, which Specter assumes are illegal. I think that is a totally reasonable thing to think and that isn't calling Specter a liar. See, that's the point... your pissed because the Rams lost in the superbowl to the Pats.
The fact is, it wasn't a rule back then, the fact is every team does everything it can to get one up on their opponents, plenty of teams video tape (again, you can film exactly what the pats filmed as long as your in the press box). What they filmed wasn't illegal, it was the location of the camera person.
Heck, Jimmy Johnson admitted he had someone do the same taping but couldn't make much use of it. He even said he used to have people go through the trash of the visit teams coaches box.
The reality is, the Pats taping the defensive signals probably had little effect on the game vs the Rams, you would have to assume that the Pats figured out the signals (keep in mind most teams have 2 or 3 people who send them in to keep people guessing) and that the Rams used the same signals in the superbowl that they used in week #10, and then assume the Patriots figured out which person was giving the legit signals, got the info to Charlie which allowed him to call a play that would work against that defense before the clock expired. even if that was all true, it still doesn't explain why the "greatest show on turf" couldn't score enough points to win.
No, I'm not calling Spector a liar and you knew that, Stima explained it perfectly.
Of course a lot of people don't like the Patriots, a lot didn't like the yankees when they kept winning, etc... etc... when 1 team wins there are fans of every other team who wanted to win and when a team stays succesful people get tired of their team not winning.
But whatever makes you guys feel better about your losses.
personally, I just tip my hat to the Giants (same way I did the Colts last year) and say good job. I don't need to find reasons to make the losses feel better.
The Patriots broke a rule week #1, they were punished, it had no effect on the season. It wasn't a rule in 2001 so no rule was broken.

Steelers say taping didn't affect outcome of games against Patriots
February 15, 2008
PITTSBURGH (AP) -- The New England Patriots' taping of opposing coaches' signals did not affect the outcome of games against the Steelers, including two AFC Championship games, Steelers chairman Dan Rooney said Friday.
"We consider the tapes of our coaching staff during our games against the New England Patriots to be a non-issue," Rooney said in a statement. "In our opinion, they had no impact on the results of those games."
Rooney's comments were fueled by remarks Thursday by U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., who has questioned whether the NFL has properly handled allegations that Patriots coach Bill Belichick had assistants videotape opponents' signals.
NFL officials indicate the Patriots taped the Steelers' coaches during AFC Championship games at the end of the 2001 and 2004 seasons, and during regular-season games in 2002 and 2004, Specter said. The Steelers lost all but the 2004 regular-season game.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell fined Belichick $500,000 and the Patriots $250,000 and docked the team a first-round draft pick.
Specter has criticized Goodell for destroying the tapes after the league's internal investigation.
But Rooney said Goodell and the league took the "appropriate action" in punishing the Patriots.
"We are confident that the commissioner has taken appropriate action in his investigation of this matter, and will do so again if new information arises which requires further investigation and/or discipline," Rooney said.
on a funny side note to all this, the NFL had already printed up a ton of 19-0 stuff to have ready to sell, they donated it Nicaragua
