Ray Rice gets a 2 game suspension.

Question about Rice. How does "retiring" affect things like free agent status, contract commitment etc? I know it's come up tons of times before (Favre being a recent example) but I forget how it all played out. If a player "retires" then say, in Rice's case, his body cooperates and 2 years later tries to break back into the league, are they just a UFA at that point? Would Seattle get any compensation? What's to stop players from retiring willy-nilly to get out of contracts? (legitimate question, I do not actually know how any of it works)
When Carson Palmer "retired" rather than keep playing for Cincy they kept the rights to him and were able to trade him when they got a deal worked out.

Ray Rice gets a 2 game suspension.
People on my Facebook are losing their shit over this (that it's only two games).
Of course, I am poking fun at them by saying it's because Ray "learned and grew" from the experience.

the best part of a 2 game suspension is the Ravens play their first two games on Sunday/Thursday so they pretty much get it out of the way in a hurry. Plus with the Thursday night game its not like he would have been 100% anyway. It is 2 division games early but its 2 games they wouldn't have used him much anyway.

Man. I remember when Flacco signed his contract I thought they way overpaid, but this is ridiculous.
http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/baltimore-ravens/joe-flacco/
That 2016 cap hit... yikes. They can get rid of him after that and "only" have a cap hit of 15.3M in dead money, or pay him..... $31M.
Like, Christ. I know he had arguably the best playoffs ever in 2012, but that seems a bit absurd to me.
Droford, how do you feel about paying Flacco $28.5M in two years. That's gotta be worse than Stafford's or Bradford's contracts.

Insane considering some of that could have helped other positions. Unless Flacco would have heeled it up and demanded the raise and stuff. Doesn't "seem" like he'd do that, though.

<font color=goldenrod>Yeah Flacco's deal is ridiculous. I feel like he would have agreed to a long-term extension with a really good pay increase, but they still seemed to give him way more than they had to. When 2016 rolls around and Flacco's cap hit goes up big time, they will likely be able to free up room by getting him to restructure via converting some of his base salary into a restructuring bonus for future years, but that means it'll be even more money that he's guaranteed later on when he's already set to make a ridiculous amount.
Restructuring catches up with you though after a while. Eli restructured his deal each year from like 2011-2013 and it's at the point where they just can't do it any more, he gets like $9 million a year just in restructuring bonuses now.</font>

one thing no one mentions is that the salary cap is going up. 2014 went up $10 million over 2013 to $133 million. if the cap is $140+, his salary won't be as much of an albatross as everyone says, and no doubt they'll restructure it to a more manageable figure anyway. Flacco's deal being worse than Stafford and Bradford's is ridiculous since neither of them have won a playoff game, much less a Super Bowl. Same thing will go for Andy Dalton when he gets a huge contract. Befuddles me why teams want to pay big money to QBs who can put stats up all day but either can't win games or they do but choke late season/playoffs.
Also on the Ravens front, Aaron Ross tore his Achilles already and is done for the year. They signed another former Giant Will Hill but he's out 6 games for a drug suspension but should be a solid option to have in the 2nd half.

I really don't want to see Peyton/Brady part 5 million but I'd be willing to bet at least one of them does get their team to the AFC Title game if not both. And a Seattle/San Fran NFC title game rematch is going to be predicted by pretty much everybody.
Gotta wait til at least the 3rd week of preseason to see how many game-changing players go down with major injuries before I make my "official" predictions.</font>

<font color=goldenrod>Don't look now but the New York Football Giants are on pace for 24-0! :shifty:
Anyway, onto the game itself. The running game seemed to be an improvement from last year straight away. I liked what I saw out of Jennings and especially Andre Williams in the first quarter when the starters were in. Williams is that much more important this year with David Wilson's NFL future extremely questionable. I had read only like 30% of the Ben McAdoo playbook had been installed, mostly runs, and it showed. Not much at all to talk about in the passing game as they stuck to routine dump offs an such, but I do see that they're focusing on implementing a quick release passing game. Between that and a having a better O-line I think Eli won't be getting swarmed on nearly every pass play.
First string D seemed pretty crisp for this early in the preseason. Again not much to go off of but I did love the moves they made in the offseason and it's nice to finally have some depth in the secondary, so here's hoping they can get through preseason healthy.
Oh and I was pumped that the one big pass play from the Giants was a bomb of a TD to Corey Washington. I tried taking a guess at the 53-man roster on the Giants message board and was one of the few to pick him for the team. The Giants WRs are undersized and while that isn't everything, if the big 6'4" kid can have a big preseason he'd be a guy to mix in, plus I'm not sure he'd clear waivers for the practice squad.</font>

Yep, that's the Lions. They're a textbook "good-bad" team. They're not quite on the level of your Clevelands or Jacksonvilles, but nowhere near competent enough to be considered an actual threat to do anything. They could just as easily fluke themselves into a playoff spot but they don't have a solid enough core/foundation to really do anything with it.
Maybe things will be different with the new coaching staff but I'm not holding my breath.
And don't get me wrong, being mediocre and in limbo is certainly a much better place to be than constant cellar-dwellers, so even though the next few years will ultimately be fruitless, at least it's not pure misery to watch.

<font color=goldenrod>I do usually watch the entierty of Giants preseason games, though. It's not a top priority like it is with a regular season game, but if I'm home I'll definitely watch to see how the new guys perform and see what unknowns can end up impressing enough to make the roster. It's especially interesting this year as the new offense should (theoretically) come together more as the preseason moves on.
I can't help but have a nice chuckle though when there's an undrafted rookie who will have a monster preseason and the fans will then clamor for them to make the team only for them to get upset when the player ends up being inactive nearly every week (Victor Cruz in 2010, Adewale Ojomo in 2012, etc.) Corey Washington might be that guy this year. They impress enough to make the team but if they can't contribute on special teams they are really just on the 53 to develop them for the next year or two when there might actually be an opening on the depth chart.</font>

NFL considering tougher penalties for future domestic violence cases, including possible one-year ban (http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/sports/wp/2014/08/13/nfl-considering-tougher-penalties-for-future-domestic-violence-cases-including-possible-one-year-ban/)
The NFL is considering toughening its penalties for players who commit acts of domestic violence, including a potential one-year ban for a second offense, according to multiple people familiar with the league’s recent deliberations.
The prospective new policy, if it is implemented, could establish guidelines for a suspension of four to six games without pay for a first offense and potentially a season-long suspension for a second incident, according to those with knowledge of the matter. They spoke on the condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the topic and because no final decision has been made by the league on implementing the policy.
The contemplated changes, if they are made by the NFL, would come after the league and Commissioner Roger Goodell have been criticized heavily for the two-game suspension imposed on Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice for allegedly striking Janay Palmer, the woman who is now his wife. Many media members and other observers have called Rice’s suspension insufficient and said it sends the wrong message about the league’s attitude toward domestic violence.
It was not clear if the potential new policy faces any significant obstacles to being put into effect.
“We need to have stricter penalties,” said one person with knowledge of the league’s deliberations on the matter. “I think you will see that. I believe the commissioner and others would like to see stricter penalties. We need to be more vigilant.”
That person said Goodell and the league “tried to stick with precedent” from previous NFL disciplinary measures when deciding on the length of Rice’s suspension.
“A lot of us were disturbed by what we saw” in the Rice case, the person said. “I think you will see something in probably the next few weeks. A first offense could be four to six games, definitely more than two. A second offense might be a year.”
A second person who had been briefed on the matter confirmed that the increased penalties are under consideration. That person said he did not know if it is definite that the new policy will be enacted nor when the new policy, if implemented, might go into effect.
The NFL declined to comment through a spokesman.
Two people with close ties to the NFL Players Association said the union was not involved in the deliberations.
Rice’s suspension resulted from an incident in February in which he allegedly struck Palmer, then his fiancée, in a hotel elevator in Atlantic City. Video became public showing Rice pulling an apparently unconscious Palmer from the elevator. The couple later married. Rice pleaded not guilty to a third-degree aggravated assault charge and avoided trial when he was accepted into a pretrial intervention program.
Rice was suspended from the Ravens’ first two games of the upcoming season without pay and was fined an additional game check based on last season’s salary. He will lose about $529,000 from the NFL’s penalty.
Goodell has defended the length of the suspension. When he spoke to reporters while in Canton, Ohio, for the Pro Football Hall of Fame induction ceremonies, he said that the punishment “has to be consistent with other cases, and it was in this matter.”

It is a little silly that Ray Rice gets a two games suspension for beating the shit out of his significant other and Josh Gordon is out an entire season for marijuana. I really hate beating a dead horse but I hope there's enough dissent as a result of this that they look at their punishment system for domestic violence and make changes to it. Even Scandrick, first-time offender, gets 4 games for MDMA and Rice only gets 2... incredible.

<font color=goldenrod>The Giants' first string passing game finally put together a great drive. 2-minute drill, going 91 yards for a TD on mainly passing plays. Was glad Coughlin didn't bring them back out for the 3rd quarter. Let them Costanza it - leave on a high note. Geoff Schwartz dislocated a toe so that's certainly not a good thing with an already thin line. He'll likely be out a couple of weeks. Hopefully Beckham finally gets into a game the last week of preseason, I'd feel better about him if I could actually see him play.
Ryan Nassib has played great the last 2 games, yes primarily against backups and third stringers, but I think he's certainly played well enough to warrant being the only backup QB. A 3rd QB is a waste of a roster space in today's NFL. You're probably screwed if your starter gets knocked out for a long time, and regardless there is never a shortage of veteran QBs on the market to bring in as an extra backup later on if needed.
And Corey Washington with his 4th TD in as many games. His 53-man roster spot has to be secure by now, the only question is whether or not Coughlin will give him any sort of playing time in the regular season.</font>

@Vito, Giants traded some kicker (Brandon McManus) to Broncos for a conditional 7th
Evil Vito
08-26-2014, 04:16 PM
<font color=goldenrod>That's pretty sweet. McManus looked really good in preseason but there was no way in hell Coughlin was going to turn the kicking job over to a rookie unless Josh Brown had an awful preseason, which he didn't. So the Giants basically got something for a guy who was gonna otherwise be cut.</font>
Evil Vito
08-26-2014, 11:48 PM
<font color=goldenrod>So apparently the condition in the conditional 7th rounder the Broncos gave the Giants for McManus is that the Giants only get the pick if McManus is on Denver's roster after week 5. Seeing as that's when Prater returns from suspension, they almost certainly will release McManus after 4 games and not give up anything.
That makes sense really. Teams are increasingly reluctant to trade draft picks for good players, so a draft pick for an undrafted kicker seemed a bit odd.</font>
road doggy dogg
08-26-2014, 11:57 PM
Ahh yeah that makes sense, still though if Prater has a setback and McManus is kicking well enough, they could keep him around an extra couple weeks if necessary. Doubtful, but if there's no attractive FAs... who knows.

Any particular reason you're down on the 49ers this year?
<font color=goldenrod>I think a lot of people are down on the Niners because of how bad the offense has looked in the preseason. I dunno though. I think they'll be good enough to get the 5 seed. Preseason is like 97% meaningless as far as evaluation of performance is concerned. Only time it may actually matter is when a team is rolling out a brand new scheme.
Actually that's the reason I'm going into the season with tempered expectations. Except for one drive the Giants offense has looked lost. I do think they'll finally hit their stride a few weeks into the season, but the easiest part of their schedule is early on. Hoping they don't give away games they should win since the second half will be brutal.</font>
Evil Vito
08-28-2014, 10:44 AM
<font color=goldenrod>Also I really wish Coughlin would sit his starters tonight. He said they'll get 15-18 snaps. Why bother? It's not enough of a sample size to mean anything and it's just risking injury. They can't afford anyone else getting hurt.</font>
road doggy dogg
08-28-2014, 11:10 AM
Basing anything off the preseason is a very poor way to evaluate things. It literally means nothing. Even if the starters are playing deep into games (3rd/4th week), the coaches are playing things close to the vest to not give away schemes etc. I just don't see how the 49ers, arguably a better team than Seattle even last year, are being disregarded because of a couple of dress rehearsals.
Evil Vito
08-28-2014, 11:56 AM
<font color=goldenrod>Yeah it's crazy. The Niners will be very good. I thought long and hard about making them my NFC rep for the Super Bowl, actually. Wouldn't surprise me at all.</font>

AFC East

Bills
AFC North
Ravens
Steelers (Wild Card 2)
Bengals
Browns
AFC South
Colts
Texans
Titans
Jaguars
AFC West
Broncos
Chargers (Wild Card 1)
Chiefs
Raiders
Pats, Colts, and Broncos would all seem to be safe bets. I think the AFC North will be strong, the Ravens just barely missed out last year. I see 2 teams emerging from that division. Despite having them missing the playoffs I don't think the Bengals will be awful, but every year a team everybody thinks will be really good ends up being a bit worse than expected and for some reason I think it'll be them. It might be my total lack of faith in Andy Dalton. Honorable mention: seriously considered the Jets for the 2nd WC, I think they'll actually be pretty good. I like their defense and think Chris Johnson will be a nice boost to their offense.
NFC East
Eagles
Giants
Cowboys
Redskins
NFC North
Packers
Bears (Wild Card 2)
Lions
Vikings
NFC South
Saints
Falcons
Panthers
Buccaneers
NFC West
Seahawks
49ers (Wild Card 1)
Cardinals
Rams
The East is wide open, any team can win. Just went with the Eagles since they're the "known" commodity but if they fell apart it wouldn't surprise me. The North should be tight, the Lions are impossible to forecast. Locked in on the Saints for the South, Panthers will come back down to Earth. Only have the Cardinals not getting the 2nd Wild Card because the division will beat the shit out of each other all year. Despite the brutal schedule Seahawks should get 6 or 7 home wins before even looking at the road games, so that pushes them to the top of the division.
Super Bowl: Seahawks over Colts. I don't think I've ever predicted a repeat winner before, it's not easy to do. But if they get homefield through the playoffs it'll be a huge boost for them...and they just have insane depth.</font>

NFL passes new punishment rules for domestic abuse cases. 1st offense is a 6 game suspension while a second offense is a lifetime ban.
Making things interesting is the new rules allow the 1st penalty to be longer if the player has any past history with domestic abuse, hits a pregnant woman, or does it in front of a child. Players can also request for reinstatement after a year for the second offense but NFL hinted its not going to work.

Redskins want a new stadium, but something tells me it won't get built anywhere near Washington DC unless there's a name change or Snyder pays for the whole thing. Which is probably OK since its entirely stupid to be talking about replacing 17 year old football stadiums even if they are dumps #fedexisadump

The idea of a Super Bowl around here with the way the traffic already is comparable to ancient road designs, is frightening.
Also the idea of the Redskins playing in a dome makes me very sad. Outdoor football in the weather is the best, especially for a team that used to make such a big deal out of being such a rough and tough team like the Skins.

<font color=goldenrod>Trindon Holliday officially to injured reserve. What a bummer. Would have been fun to have him as a return man but he hurt his hamstring early on and didn't play at all in the preseason.
Sounds like the Giants will use their short-term IR option on Geoff Schwartz. Schwartz has said he'll probably miss 3-4 weeks but Coughlin is being extra cautious, giving him the short-term IR keeps him out for 8 games. Ugh.</font>

Ryan Mallett ended up surviving the roster cuts for the Pats while Stevan Ridley kept his spot and Jonas Gray cut for the RB corps. Bulk of the cuts ended up being from the secondary for the final round.
Texans still want Mallett and had the waiver claim ready had he been cut today.

<font color=goldenrod>Not too many unexpected moves with the Giants cuts. Probably the biggest surprise is that Kerry Wynn made the team as an undrafted DE, and they kept 10 DL when most figured they'd keep 10. Can't say I really understand what they see in Markus Kuhn though, if they wanted to keep a 5th DT I would have preferred Kelcy Quarles who may not make it through to the practice squad.
I guess it makes sense though. The assumption was that the Giants would take some combination of 11 DBs, they wound up going with 10. They do have 5 genuinely good cornerbacks and will probably be able to stash Bennett Jackson, Thomas Gordon, and/or Chandler Fenner onto the practice squad so they should at least have some backup for when the inevitable injuries happen.
They also kept 10 OL which seems a bit excessive but then again a lot of them are banged and Geoff Schwartz is probably going on the short-term IR on Tuesday.
Wouldn't be too surprised if 2-3 players on the Giants' official opening night roster are guys who were just cut from elsewhere. Especially at TE. When Daniel Fells wins your starting TE job after being out of football last year, you know there's a problem.</font>

Yeah that was the plan but Mallett kept struggling during every preseason.
The fact Mallett was only worth a very low draft pick is pretty bad but Jimmy Garoppolo was really good this preseason. Then again the only reason he wasn't cut earlier was because the Texans didn't want to wait until after the cuts to say he was their big waiver target.

my only issue is that no one would care about him if he wasn't gay. Odds are good he wouldn't have even been drafted. Nobody cares about him for his ability to play the game because he isn't good. If he was, there'd be 31 other teams knocking down his door trying to sign him. There are hundreds of players that got cut over the weekend who are probably more deserving of a shot in the NFL than him.

Most professional analyst completely disagree with your post. The extra media attention, a huge distraction, is what keeps teams from wanting Sam. He would have went a lot earlier in the draft if not for coming out.
Or we can just imagine all the ESPN analyst, who get paid millions of dollars, jave no idea what they are talking about.
