Captain Atom, Resurrection Man, Voodoo, and Justice League International are being canceled.
To be replaced by Talon, Sword of Sorcery, The Phantom Stranger, and Team 7. So there will still be 52 titles.

Need to cancel a few more titles to make way for some more Bat-books. Couple more of those wouldn't hurt at all.

I hope they don't cancel Savage Hawkman. It's not really that great, but it's kind of like the ugly puppy you love.
If you saw the art in the first couple of issues there's an extra emphasis on ugly.

Just watched Superman vs The Elite. Was "ok". Could have been a lot better.
Comixology (digital comics distributor with a rather nifty iPhone/iPad app) are doing a sale of issues related to the original storyline in comics to celebrate the release of this. Also doing a sale on stuff that "inspired" it, namely The Authority which I snapped up the entire first volume of.
Amazed how much I like reading comics in a digital format, but their tempting offers are sapping my wallet. :'(

So is anyone else keeping up with Action Comics at the moment?
Because WTF is up with--
Clark Kent being 'dead' and Superman starting a new secret identity? I mean, I get the in-character reasoning for it (bad guys might go after the people he cares about, so he wants to sever ties with them to keep them safe), but it doesn't work.
First off, his new identity (a firefighter named 'John Clark') doesn't even bother wearing glasses; his new disguise is a hat. And the whole reason Clark Kent works is because he's kind of a drip, to the point that no one would ever seriously suspect that such a dweeb could possibly be Superman. But 'John Clark' is running around saving people anyway, so that should make it even more obvious who he really is.
And secondly, Action Comics takes place a few years before the main Superman comic, right? And in the main Superman comic, he's still Clark Kent. So we already know in advance that at some point he's going to give up the John Clark identity and go back to being Clark Kent. Which renders this whole thing totally pointless.
I really liked the initial arc in Action, with Superman's origin and the re-design of Brainiac and all of that. But this arc is already putting me off because there's no reason for it.
Also, "Nimrod the Hunter?" Somewhere in the Marvel Universe, the Kravenoff family is preparing a hefty lawsuit.
And while I'm thinking about it, I'm gonna take a second to rant about the one-shot in Action Comics #9:
The stand-alone story about the Superman of Earth 23.
Okay, so on Earth 23, Superman's a black guy, and is also President of the United States. While his secret identity is 'Calvin Ellis,' it's implied that this Superman is basically a stand-in for Barack Obama. And Lex Luthor has to vociferously defend his enmity toward Superman by yelling "I'm not racist! It's everything else about you that I hate!" Now, I'm not going to go on a big lengthy political diatribe here, because I don't wanna make a big 'thing' out of it, but..........come on, really? I mean, it's admittedly not a very deep parallel since they don't bring up policy or anything other than "he's the President and he's black," but it's still there, and IMO it's meant to bait people into an argument over it.
Under Superman's administration, everything is awesome, and even when he's solving problems in-costume, he has a robotic double (controlled by Brainiac) handle crises as President. So yeah, Superman is in a position of essentially supreme power, with a cowed and obedient Brainiac as his servant. Where have I seen this before? (http://www.dccomics.com/graphic-novels/superman-red-son)
We've seen stories with Superman or a Superman-like figure in positions of total authority before, and it's always shown that that's a bad thing, that even the best man is prone to the corrupting of absolute power, and that even a well-meaning tyrant is still a tyrant. Here, though, it's celebrated, and a universe-hopping Lois Lane goes so far as to call him "Superman done right," basically stating that seizing power under false pretenses (his identity as Superman is still a secret), running a powerful shadow-government (since he has Brainiac running the show in secret), and using the Justice League to flat-out invade other countries (they're shown flying into Qurac and destroying their nuclear program) is perfectly okay--and not just okay, but ideal--as long as he's "on our side." At least Wonder Woman points out how hypocritical they're being, but still willingly goes along with it anyway. Who Watches The Watchmen, indeed.
Maybe it's just the rabid Libertarian in me, but I find that whole concept incredibly disturbing.
However, once I get past that (which isn't easy), there's another part of this comic that I thought was actually really clever. There's a parallel-universe version of Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen, and Clark Kent who are traveling from universe to universe to escape their world's version of Superman, who was created by a thought-powered doohickey to be the peak of human ideals, but then was twisted into an evil and violent mockery of itself by their corporate backers to be more 'marketable.'
This was a pretty entertaining deconstruction of the typical "Superman needs to be dark and gritty" bitching about how they should tone down the character's idealism to make him more relatable and cool, and how doing so betrays everything that the character is meant to represent. Of course, they kind of overdid it by then making that Superman a big 90s robot-thing and having his symbol resemble a Swastika, but it was still a rather neat idea.

I have been following up with it.
To be honest, I subscribed to a few of the DC titles (including those 2) and I don't think I am renewing. Action Comics was ok for a bit..barely. But it has gotten boring/sloppy beyond belief.
The Superman title has some cool ideas here and there..barely actually. But its just a mess. In fact, most of the new 52 books are a mess except for a few. What a fucking tragedy.

Wonder how the timeline of that works now. Jason Todd gets beaten to death then Damien appears?

Like Little League, Young Justice is doing a service for DC. Hell, all of their movie/cartoon stuff is doing a service. Why? Because that DCnU shit hasn't gone mainstream yet. Man of Steel may be the start, though I believe a lot of that was decided before the big reboot (no trunks, edgier tone).
Once the DCnU starts bleeding into the 'toons and movies, it will be the end of all things. Good thing most mainstream media tend to be 5, up to 10 years behind what's going on in the comics.

So, um......yeah.
Also, I should point out that at the MoS panel at Comic-Con, Snyder pretty much said that he's not interested in doing a Justice League movie. And I'm perfectly fine with that-- WB and DC should be more concerned with making the Superman franchise and anything else they're doing as good as they can possibly be on their own feet, instead of just trying to copy Marvel.

I wouldn't call it copying Marvel, any more than Avengers was copying the Justice Society. It's a natural progression of a superhero movie-verse, that it's larger than each hero thinks upon their origin.

Alfred. Gordon. Lucius. Bruce . . . Wayne. Names that have come to mean so much to me. Today, I’m three weeks from saying a final good-bye to these characters and their world. It’s my son’s ninth birthday. He was born as the Tumbler was being glued together in my garage from random parts of model kits. Much time, many changes. A shift from sets where some gunplay or a helicopter were extraordinary events to working days where crowds of extras, building demolitions, or mayhem thousands of feet in the air have become familiar.
People ask if we’d always planned a trilogy. This is like being asked whether you had planned on growing up, getting married, having kids. The answer is complicated. When David and I first started cracking open Bruce’s story, we flirted with what might come after, then backed away, not wanting to look too deep into the future. I didn’t want to know everything that Bruce couldn’t; I wanted to live it with him. I told David and Jonah to put everything they knew into each film as we made it. The entire cast and crew put all they had into the first film. Nothing held back. Nothing saved for next time. They built an entire city. Then Christian and Michael and Gary and Morgan and Liam and Cillian started living in it. Christian bit off a big chunk of Bruce Wayne’s life and made it utterly compelling. He took us into a pop icon’s mind and never let us notice for an instant the fanciful nature of Bruce’s methods.
I never thought we’d do a second—how many good sequels are there? Why roll those dice? But once I knew where it would take Bruce, and when I started to see glimpses of the antagonist, it became essential. We re-assembled the team and went back to Gotham. It had changed in three years. Bigger. More real. More modern. And a new force of chaos was coming to the fore. The ultimate scary clown, as brought to terrifying life by Heath. We’d held nothing back, but there were things we hadn’t been able to do the first time out—a Batsuit with a flexible neck, shooting on Imax. And things we’d chickened out on—destroying the Batmobile, burning up the villain’s blood money to show a complete disregard for conventional motivation. We took the supposed security of a sequel as license to throw caution to the wind and headed for the darkest corners of Gotham.
I never thought we’d do a third—are there any great second sequels? But I kept wondering about the end of Bruce’s journey, and once David and I discovered it, I had to see it for myself. We had come back to what we had barely dared whisper about in those first days in my garage. We had been making a trilogy. I called everyone back together for another tour of Gotham. Four years later, it was still there. It even seemed a little cleaner, a little more polished. Wayne Manor had been rebuilt. Familiar faces were back—a little older, a little wiser . . . but not all was as it seemed.
Gotham was rotting away at its foundations. A new evil bubbling up from beneath. Bruce had thought Batman was not needed anymore, but Bruce was wrong, just as I had been wrong. The Batman had to come back. I suppose he always will.
Michael, Morgan, Gary, Cillian, Liam, Heath, Christian . . . Bale. Names that have come to mean so much to me. My time in Gotham, looking after one of the greatest and most enduring figures in pop culture, has been the most challenging and rewarding experience a filmmaker could hope for. I will miss the Batman. I like to think that he’ll miss me, but he’s never been particularly sentimental.

They just finished up a crossover with all the titles called "Night of the Owls" so now would probably be a good time to jump on. They aren't running with anything like RIP or any of that everything seems to be pretty much the status quo since the new 52 started. It's been a pretty good book, nothing groundbreaking but still good.

Lobo creator and comic and animation writer Roger Slifer was moved to Barlow Respiratory Hospital, a long term acute care hospital, last Friday, according to a Facebook post by his cousin Emma Slifer. Barlowe is expert in weaning patients off ventilators; Slifer has been on a ventilator since the hit and run accident that critically injured him in June (see "Lobo Creator in Critical Condition"). He remains in a coma, although seizures that had plagued him until recently have abated, according to the post. Some other improvements have also been noted.
Police are searching for the hit and run driver, and artist Tone Rodriguez has created a drawing of Lobo to assist in the search and in helping Slifer cover his expenses, which is now being auctioned on eBay by Hero Initiative.

WB will fashion JL as an inverse of what Marvel did with Avengers. It will introduce major players and they will spin-off into movies rather than converge. The only guy who will be established will likely be Henry's Superman. This is their best bet, as it kills a few birds with one stone (Wonder Woman, Flash, new Batman, new Green Lantern, etc). I like that idea.
Damian Rey
08-09-2012, 01:51 PM
I personally have no interest in a JL film. At all. I think it would be a mistake to do a JL film with the intention of spinning it off into character singles. DC should just focus on making strong, standalone films with their characters.
Kalyx triaD
08-09-2012, 02:02 PM
What's their batting rate, though? Green Lantern bombed and they won't even try their other heroes. They felt Superman Returns failed (expectations were kind of unrealistic) and their ace in the whole just wrapped up. JL could be a fresh start for them, so long as Man of Steel delivers first.
Marvel Studios has done no wrong in my eyes as of yet. None of their movies are as moving as any of Nolan's Batman films, or rated as high, but consistency is their ace in the whole. As well as, something Phil Coulson would agree with - Conviction. If WB dealt with the Iron Man series they'd reboot it after seeing part 2 didn't do as well as part 1. They have no confidence in their properties and turn tail the second something isn't what they imagined.
Rather than look for lightning in a bottle, I think their entire DC movies division needs to get shaken up with new leadership. They made changes with their DC Entertainment brand but they still have no aim with the movies. Look how their animated movies are with Bruce Timm pretty much running the show; consistent quality, great at best and at worst good. Their movie end has no such vision and control.
They simply can't focus on making a strong, standalone film. They don't know how despite Nolan's contributions.

For some reason, I never like it when writers decide to make Superman and Wonder Woman a couple. For starters, because I don't buy the whole argument that Clark shouldn't be with Lois just because they can't fuck--first of all because that's an incredibly shallow way of looking at things, and secondly because they've come up with tons of ways around that over the years.
And I dunno, maybe I've got an angry-militant-feminist in my head or something, but it always kinda seems to cheapen Diana when they take Wonder Woman, who's supposed to be the idyllic model for women to aspire to, and say "eh, make her Superman's girlfriend."

It seems this "new status quo" is quite serious. In an interview with the Associated Press, Johns and Lee hinted that the other elephant in the room, Lois Lane's previously-thought destined relationship with Clark, simply doesn't exist. They've done it a million times with big changes to characters and storylines and more than once overturned reboots/retcons that were supposed to last. I admit reverting from such a large reboot would be unprecedented, and kinda embarrassing, but I find that their mulit-Earth thing always gave them a card they can play when things go sour enough.
This is a comic universe where relaunches are also canon because of that detail.

I read your article and I have a few things to say about it.
Firstly, everything you said about Superman being grounded by being attached to Lois Lane is absolutely true. That said, it doesn't make it a bad thing, that he's not with her anymore.
If it was the original universe, I would agree. But what is the point of a new universe, with a new superman, that is exactly the same as the old one? I am interested to see how this new superman, without that humility and humanity he gained from his relationship with lois, handles himself in different situations.
As for labeling Wonder Woman as "just superman's girlfriend", I think it's unfair to do so until we can actually see her role in the relationship. I don't think it's fair to say it diminishes her role as a strong, independent woman just because she has a boyfriend.
I mean if she's in an apron making superman a sandwhich next issue, then yeah, sure. I'mn going to wait to see what her role in the relationship is. It's very possible that she will indeed end up being portrayed as "just superman's girlfriend". It's also possible, however, that she will be presented as an equal in the relationship. I feel we could get some good stories out of that.
I guess I've always thought that alternate universes were exactly the place to try stuff like this. We all know that the original DCU will return at some point. So I don't see the harm in trying different stuff. If it works, great. If it doesn't, well no big deal. No harm done.
I also hate this knee jerk reaction, that comic fans have toward stuff like this. When the Winter Soldier was revealed as Bucky, I must have had 20 conversations where I said "Let's just wait and see how it's written". But everyone ignored me and called out bloody murder for this "blasphemy".
Then what happened? The Winter Soldier story, and the entire run for that matter, became one of, if not the best Cap runs in history.
Any concept, no matter how much it seems it won't work, can be turned into a great story with the right writing. I absolutely refuse to condemn a decision until I see how it's written.

Plus, we don't even have any clue where this is going. This relationship with Diana could go horribly wrong for the simple reason they are both superheroes, and that experience is what could lead him to seek out a relationship with a human like lois. To give himself all the qualities that the relationship with lois in the dcu gives him.
So let's all calm the fuck down.

Yeah, exactly. I'm always hesitant about stories like that, but like always, I gave it a chance, and Damien turned out to be a fantastic character.

Eh. I'm not a fan of Damian. But that's mostly because I'm a big Tim Drake fan, and Damian being there means that Tim has been all but kicked out of the Bat-Family and given a really stupid new name and costume.
And I'd be a lot more willing to give the whole Superman/Wonder Woman thing a chance if they weren't so absolutely blatant about it just being a publicity stunt. Not to mention it shows there's little to no communication between the writers, since Azzarello was very clearly trying to put Wonder Woman together with Orion in her own comic, before they announced "Nope, she's with Superman now!"
And frankly, I don't want to give it a chance. I've been pretty constantly disappointed in the New 52 ever since it was announced. And I'm getting sick of them announcing "shocking changes to the status quo" seemingly every other week. The whole thing just reeks of being a cheap gimmick.

I wasn't a fan of Damian until he actually became Robin with Dick Grayson as Batman. Then I loved him. I also liked Tim as Red Robin, his series was good, and I liked him evolving as a hero like Dick Grayson did.
Have not enjoyed Damian so much in the new 52. Dunno. He just worked better with Dick Grayson then with his father. I am behind in Bat-Stuff, so he could have got better again.
Oh yeah, and new 52 Tim Drake is just a big mess with a crappy costume.

There was comic where Superman got high (comically implied, of course) from some rare king of K, and was able to smell fresh baked brownies in the mid-west from the Watchtower. Logic (even by comic standards) aside, I thought it was funny.
I suppose he would have super smell, I wouldn't call that crazy.

Over the past year and a half I have been slowly reading every Superman comic from 1985 (Man of Steel Post-Crisis Reboot) onwards. Currently in 2003. I should have been documenting my process, pointing out notable stories from each year. Too late for that, though. Not gonna start now.
I'm ok with Super-Wondy but I'm just indifferent to the DCn52 outside of Snyder's Batman and Azzarello's Wonder Woman.
I am curious to see where this Shazam nonsense is headed though.

Just finished reading the Supergirl/Linda Danvers series by Peter David. It is quite good. Shifts tone a couple of times but manages to stay pretty sweet. Sad that the character is gone now.
Peter David has said that if the series wasn't canceled, it would have become a Birds of Prey type book, with a cast of Linda Danvers as Superwoman, Kara Zor-El as Supergirl, and Power Girl. Would have loved to see that.

It looks like Wonder Woman might be making a return to prime-time network television — again.
More than a year after NBC passed on a Wonder Woman pilot, Vulture reports that a new series starring the DC icon is in very early development at The CW, with the working title of "Amazon." It's said to be at the script development stage at this point, written by Allan Heinberg — a TV and comic book veteran, whose credits include The O.C. and Marvel's Young Avengers, plus a 2006 run on the Wonder Woman comic book.
The series is said to be a Smallville-esque take on the character, depicting Wonder Woman's early days. Wonder Woman became a household name with the Lynda Carter-starred series that ran on ABC and later CBS for three seasons, from 1976 to 1979; Ally McBeal creator David E. Kelley's 2011 Wonder Woman pilot starring Adrianne Palicki received a mix of abundant pre-release hype and persistent bad buzz, and was ultimately not picked up as a series.
The CW, and its predecessor The WB, has a long history with live-action adaptations of DC Comics properties. Young Superman series Smallville ran for 10 series between WB and CW before wrapping up in 2011, and the short-lived Birds of Prey aired on the WB in 2002. Arrow, based on Green Arrow, is set to debut on The CW on Oct. 10.

I guess, but so far everyone in the comic has been pretty strictly in-universe. Why break the fourth wall and start introducing people from the real world now?
I mean, I'm hoping there's a specific and integral reason for this-- especially since Gaiman's pretty legendary for his own metafictional writings, about the nature of storytelling and what characters and stories mean to us in the real world, etc. Little League hasn't let me down yet, and they've got the potential to do something really really cool here. If it's just for the sake of a cool nerd-cred cameo, then it's a real wasted opportunity.
