Those Spider-Man panels while not bad are about average, compared to all the amazing stuff out there. Sooooooo many great artists out there right now. My god, Ivan Reis. The fact that this guy does what he does, and still manages to meet mainstream book deadlines is a miracle. He is in my opinion, the greatest penciller in comics history. Then there's stuff like X-Force which has been one of the most consistently gorgeous books the last few years. Captain America, Future FoundAtion, Cable, Iron Fist, Punisher, and Wolverine also comes to mind. On the DC side, in addition to Ivan Reis, there's guys like Phil Jimenez and the iconic Jim Lee.
And it's not just the art itself which is great. Scenes are often drawn from more dynamic angles than the straight shot with goofy poses of decades past.
Now there are a lot more artists with unique visual styles than there used to be, and I can understand if some of them aren't your cup of tea. Stuff like Quietly and Yu can be a love it or hate it affair. However to say the art as a whole is bad is just absurd to me. I can't really be kind about it, because I've been reading comics regularly since 1987, and in my opinion, the art today is the best it's ever been by an extremely wide margin.

FUCK THE NEW 52
On top of everything annoying- THEY DESTROYED LOBO.
I "like" the new design but THAT ISN'T LOBO! It's a Twilight-wannabe edgy-Lobo! This whole "edgy" thing is getting ridiculous, it's enough that people like Kayne West and Lil Wayne try to be dark and edgy and now we have comics trying to turn a hulked up Wolverine satire into this.
He looks like Lobo's kid more than Lobo if anything. His new design looks like it was made to hopefully appeal to younger people who are just discovering stuff like that because being dark and edgy became a fad for some reason. I love change in big comics- I adore Superior Spider-Man, I adore Morrisons Batman, I don't mind Affleck as Batman until I see the trailer it's not a big deal at all, I love goth rock/goth culture but this design just seems like it has no reason, Lobo had a unique look.
http://i.newsarama.com/images/i/000/112/075/original/Lobo_D_kr.jpg?1377276741
I was just about to post this.
I think Lobo had a pretty distinguished look before. I'm not sure why they really needed to update it.
The design itself isn't terrible I just would've preferred a bulkier Lobo rather than sleeker one and I wish they went with darker hair.

I mean would rather Biker Lobo and you would think he would fit in this 'edgy' New 52 naturally but if I had to choose some redesign I'd roll with the space samurai.
While the redesign isn't my favorite, I like the new writer's take on the character in this interview:
http://www.newsarama.com/18200-new-female-writer-promises-dark-creepy-take-on-lobo-for-dc-s-villains-month.html
Nrama: As I'm sure you're aware, Lobo originally represented all that was "cliché" about comic book "bad-assery." Is he still that character at all? How would describe the character now, as you're writing him?
Bennett: The surest way to miss the mark of what is “cool” or “badass” is to focus on those words and concepts. If you miss a target in archery, it’s because you were thinking too much about the target, and not enough about what you were doing to hit the target.
I have no intentions to make Lobo “cool” or “badass." I will write him proud, vicious, indifferent, driven, and self-satisfying.

08-24-2013, 10:59 AM
Seems to me that if he was meant to be cliche about all that was "cool" and "manly" when he was created, they appear to be doing the same with this current redesign.
He's pretty much the stereotype for everything that is "dark", "mysterious" and "gothic" and all of that nonsense that Twilight and it's contemporaries like to claim these days.

Fans may have thought they were familiar with the “New 52” incarnation of Lobo, but DC Editor Bob Harras writing on DC’s “What’s New With the New 52” blog revealed that the Lobo seen on the pages of “New 52” books so far is actually an imposter. The new Lobo, who sports a sleek new character design by Kenneth Rocafort, will be unveiled in the September Villains month one-shot, Justice League #23.2: Lobo. The new Lobo is evidently extremely pissed off that someone has been stealing his thunder, and he’s determined to do something about it.
Writing on The Source, Harras announced that Justice League #23.2: Lobo from the creative team of Marguerite Bennett, Ben Oliver, Cliff Richards, and Daniel Brown “will contain a major surprise.” In the book that is due out on September 11th, the real Lobo is on a quest to kill the man who has taken his name.
The rejected designs all featured a thicker version of Lobo like this one, which was Rocafort's first try.
Rocafort produced several prototypes for the new Lobo, and DC picked the leanest design that Rocafort produced, which features updated facial tattoos, laser-edged blades, and powerful gloves—a new look that according to Harras “turns Lobo into a lean, mean killing machine.”
Still think it's almost as much gash as Miley Cyrus at the VMAs.

What's the verdict on Secret Six and Gotham City Sirens? I've heard moderately good things about them but I don't spend too much time on comic book talk these days, so I'm kind of out of the loop. Glee's Grant Gustin shall portray Barry Allen in Arrow, and possibly the Arrow spin-off starring Flash. This casting is significant in that there's plenty rumors and fan requests that Arrow share the new Man of Steel continuity where Batman is set to appear in the next movie. This would save them some time when they get around to Justice League, not too mention Arrow has so successfully built a grounded world for itself, Man of Steel and even the Dark Knight trilogy could readily accept it.
But yeah, they have a Flash. He will be the first 'superhero' as far as Arrow is concerned.

Why are you making it out that DC is trying to "get in on Marvel's action" after Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., when DC is the one that had a live-action TV show for ten seasons and then made another one which is also enjoying success, before Agents of Shield ever started? (To Shadow)

Because Smallville and Arrow (and the new upcoming Flash and Constantine shows) are about the actual heroes themselves, whereas Agents of SHIELD and the new Gotham series are meant to be more about the 'little guys' in a world of superheroes and villains. DC may have cornered the market on superhero TV shows first, but it's the theme that they're copying off of Marvel now, not the genre itself.

Created by Chuck Dixon in Detective Comics #647, Stephanie is the daughter of a villain known as the Cluemaster. She created an alter ego known as The Spoiler in order to ruin the criminal schemes of her father, and eventually became enamored with costume crime-fighting and became a key member of Robin’s supporting cast of characters (where she was at the center of a high-profile teen pregnancy saga in 1999) until she met her first comic book demise in the 2004 crossover event Batman: War Games. In 2009 the character was revived and took on the mantle of Batgirl until the title was cancelled in 2011. When Batgirl returned as part of the "New 52," Barbara Gordon was the eponymous heroine of that series, and until now there has been no official mention of Stephanie Brown in the revamped DC lineup.
Snyder explained that "No one want to shelve her, it was more about finding the right time to reintroduce her." According to Snyder it was Talon writer James Tynion IV who came up with the plan to bring Stephanie back to the Batbooks, and Tynion told the NYCC audience that Stephanie will make her triumphant return to the DCU in the third issue of Batman Eternal, and that she will be coming back as The Spoiler.

Amazon's got ten Batman "family" collections up for three bucks each asd part of their Kindle DotD. I only really picked up the Batwoman (new 52) collection, in part because I've heard good things and in part because Gail Simone.
Still, might be something of interest to someone.

WB has announced that the Vertigo series iZombie is now in development for TV on the CW. Only read a few issues of the series, but it seemed "cool".
Synopsis:
Deadline.com it a "supernatural crime procedural that centers on a med student-turned-zombie who takes a job in the coroner’s office to gain access to the brains she must reluctantly eat to maintain her humanity. But with each brain she consumes, she inherits the corpse’s memories, and with the help of her medical examiner boss and a police detective, she solves homicide cases in order to quiet the disturbing voices in her head."

Man of Steel spoilers:
"In regards to the death of Zod, whose neck was snapped by Superman, Snyder said the notion that Superman doesn't kill came from his appearances on television and the movies. "That rule doesn't exist in the comics. In the comics, he's actually killed Zod a couple of times," Snyder said. "In the comics he's more of a practical hero. His aversion to killing won't stop him from doing it if it's the only solution."

DC Comics’ Constantine is that much closer to returning to live action, with NBC ordering a pilot for the proposed show.
We first heard about the project back in September, and now The Hollywood Reporter says that the network is ready to move to the pilot stage on the David Goyer adaptation of the DC character. Goyer, who of course has co-scripted and/or worked on the stories for the Dark Knight trilogy as well as Man of Steel and its upcoming sequel -- not to mention many other comics related projects -- will write the Constantine pilot with The Mentalist’s Daniel Cerone for Warner Bros. Television.
John Constantine is one of the best known characters from the supernatural side of DC. Created by Alan Moore and Steve Bissette (for Swamp Thing), his solo book Hellblazer was a Vertigo mainstay, running for 300 issues. Constantine has also been a key figure in Justice League Dark, and let's not forget that Keanu Reeves even played him on the big screen at one point!
The news follows today’s revelations about FOX’s upcoming Gotham TV series, which will reportedly be a Nolan-esque Batman origin story.
The History of John Constantine
Meanwhile, NBC has also ordered a pilot for a new procedural from Arrow's Greg Berlanti called Mysteries of Laura, which will be a “drama with a sharp sense of humor following a quirky female homicide detective who juggles high stakes crime as well as her ex-husband and a devilish set of twin boys.”

The CW has decided not to move forward with its Wonder Woman prequel series Amazon, according to Hollywood Reporter. The series had been developed based on a script by Alan Heinberg, but the network was not satisfied (see "No Pilot Order Yet for 'Wonder Woman'") and requested a rewrite by Heroes writer Aron Eli Coleite last May (see "CW Puts New Writer on 'Wonder Woman' Project").
When the network started moving ahead with a Flash series, the Wonder Woman series started to lose momentum (see "Flash Origin in 'Arrow'"), and has now been declared dead in that form at the CW by network president Mark Pedowitz at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour.
New Warner Bros. CEO Kevin Tsujihara wants to find a way to use the character (see "Warners Has 'Huge Plans' for 'Other DC Properties'"), but it looks like it’s going to take a different idea than the prequel concept that was being developed at the CW.
NBC also had a Wonder Woman series in development back in 2011; that series is also dead (see "NBC Dumps 'Wonder Woman'").

01-18-2014, 03:01 PM
The 'strange bedfellows' thing is a fine line for me with comics. It bothers me for two main reasons:
1) It almost always demands somebody severely breaks character for it to work. Under no circumstance could Wolverine and Sabretooth share living spaces for more than a day, without turning it into a warzone. At the very least, I like that they ended that arch with Logan starting a fight for seemingly no reason while Creed was just watching TV. Course correction.
2) They pretty much never play it in reverse. When bad guys join the good guys they don't have to be mind-fucked or tricked or anything. It's something, somehow, the good team has to deal with it. 'Shake things up' and whatever. But when a good guy takes a trip on the dark side there has to be all sorts of narrative apologetics to explain it. So we have the spells, mind-fucks, illusions, possessed bodies, etc. By this standard villains have more capacity for change than the heroes.
Fignuts
01-18-2014, 03:13 PM
You are thinking of the first time Sabretooth joined the x-men. The second time was acompletely different story. He didn't so much join them as he did place himself in their captivity to protect him from the Children.
Doctor Doom teams up with the heroes all the time, to tackle a larger threat. As does Thanos.
Point is, they don't have to stray from his character to make this work.

Basically, we'll have two concurrent series of Justice League movies and Batman movies, and they'll be in continuity with each other. So it's kind of world-building."

Finally got around to seeing the Flashpoint Paradox. Very well animated and some very clever use of powers on display, but......blah. Between this, the Injustice video games and comics, and the current Forever Evil arc, it feels like "Depressing joyless crap-sack world where [x] amount of heroes have gone evil and now everyone's graphically killing each other for shock value" is the only trick DC knows how to do. It was especially gratuitous here, with pretty much every single goddamn scene with Aquaman and Wonder Woman in them ending in someone getting murdered, and IMO that's what killed it for me. None of the characters had even the slightest redemptive quality to them, which didn't make the whole war with the fate of the world at stake feel like it had any consequence, or that it's a world where "it all went wrong" and can still be salvaged. In a world where everyone's an asshole and a true-blue-paragon-of-good character like Wonder Woman is butchering children with swords (seriously, what is it with DC and their awful portrayal of Wonder Woman lately as this bloodthirsty psychopath?), then I'm rooting for the apocalypse.

Yeah, one of the only New 52 series I have been keeping up with, "Earth 2", has kind of gone the way of the dark world with heroes gone wrong.

With the current direction of Earth 2 i would much rather see John Romita Jr be allowed to cut loose over there. i think his style might be more suited.

Really a shame, Earth 2 pre-crisis, and then the Justice Society later on.... they weren't dark and grim stuff. Generally they have been more positive, vibrant, upbeat than their Earth 1/Justice League counterparts.

You are thinking of Peter Parker.
He is a character in Spider-Man mythology. I believe he is the second person to wear the Spider suit after Ben Reilly.

If you haven't watched the debut of Barry Allen, STFU. If you did, you'd realize that the character has a lot of positive buzz, and that theONLY criticism you could have this moment, is the fact that his cowl has a chin bump.
I trust the creative direction of the DCTV universe at this moment.

Honestly thought that they would have given him a Jay Garrick look with a more "realistic" look and some sort of helmet.

The salad bowl helmet? Glad they didn't. Looks kind of campy. The helmet reminds me of what they have going with Capt. America for the current films. Can't wait to see the whole suit.

I like the costume, quite a bit. Makes me think they made it with the intention to make the transition from the small-screen to the big-screen, if all that talk about connecting the Arrow/Flash TV-verse with Man of Steel bear any fruit.
