I honest-to-God would have gladly accepted the DCnU if they had packaged it as a parallel universe like Ultimate Marvel. It's the fact that this new continuity also went out of its way to take everything we'd already known and say "nope, didn't happen" that annoys the hell out of me.

I doubt this will last forever. It's only a matter of time before things get 'Heroes Return'd, or whatever that Marvel thing was in the 90's.

Meh, I understand. B-list sounds alright, but C-list? Come on the guy was one of the main Avengers since forever.

Ah whatever, I don't really care anyway lol. The whole point is that this 'Arrow' show will likely suck because it's DC and it isn't Batman and Superman. :p

So, a series of Watchmen Prequel comics are now confirmed.

The news comes after months of rumors, leaked art and speculation. Starting this summer, the lineup of seven miniseries, dubbed Before Watchmen, includes:

RORSCHACH (4 issues) – Writer: Brian Azzarello. Artist: Lee Bermejo

MINUTEMEN (6 issues) – Writer/Artist: Darwyn Cooke

COMEDIAN (6 issues) – Writer: Brian Azzarello. Artist: J.G. Jones

DR. MANHATTAN (4 issues) – Writer: J. Michael Straczynski. Artist: Adam Hughes

NITE OWL (4 issues) – Writer: J. Michael Straczynski. Artists: Andy and Joe Kubert

OZYMANDIAS (6 issues) – Writer: Len Wein. Artist: Jae Lee

SILK SPECTRE (4 issues) – Writer: Darwyn Cooke. Artist: Amanda Conner

The first Watchmen-related comic book material released since the original series, a new Before Watchmen issue will be released weekly, with each containing a two-page Curse of the Crimson Corsair back-up written by Len Wein and illustrated by John Higgins. Both creators worked on the original Watchmen, Wein as editor and Higgins as colorist. The initiative will be wrapped with a Before Watchmen: Epilogue one-shot by various creators.

So, in essence, by the end there will be more prequel material than the original series.

Here's a quote from Straczynski on the subject of Alan Moore's complaints about these prequels being made: "I get it. But by the same token, Alan has spent most of the last decade writing some very, very good stories about characters created by other writers, including Alice (from Wonderland), Dorothy (from Oz), Wendy (from Peter Pan), as well as Captain Nemo, the Invisible Man, Jekyll and Hyde and Professor Moriarty. I think one loses a little of the moral high ground to say, "I can write characters created by Jules Verne, HG Wells, Robert Louis Stevenson, Arthur Conan Doyle and Frank Baum, but it's wrong for anyone else to write my characters."

Nowhere Man
02-03-2012, 03:40 AM
Yeah, but none of those authors were around to say 'no.' So JMS is full of shit.

Plus, there's a big difference between doing an adaptation and just saying "Hey, we're taking your story and slapping a bunch of extra bullshit onto it, and there's nothing you can do about it. So nyah."

Destor
02-03-2012, 03:41 AM

Okay, you're right in that aspect. DC owns the rights and can technically do whatever they want with it, no matter how much of a shameless and artistically bankrupt cash-grab it may be.

However, it's still a massive slap in the face to exploit the guy's work against his will. And yes, if all of the writers that Moore pulled from were around to say 'no' when he pulled from them and he did it anyway, I'd be calling him just as much of an asshole as I'm calling JMS. Though at least Moore had the decency to do an alternate interpretation of their works.

02-03-2012, 04:37 AM

Captain of Fun
02-03-2012, 12:40 PM
I don't really think this makes Moore a hypocrite. The important thing, as NM said,is that moore's work was adaptations, while DC is fucking with the original work.

That is a huge difference, in my opinion.

Lock Jaw

Meh. If anything, it is kudos for DC for holding out as long as they did. They've been trying for years and years to get Moore on board for something, if not as writer, then as "producer" or "overseer" or whatever. So they have finally given up and are now doing this before memory of the movie goes away entirely.

Man, I've been reading some of the new 52 series and I'm pretty confused, but still blown away. Love what I've been reading so far but some of the timelines are really confusing. Who's timelines are included and who's aren't. Some are completely changed but others like Barbara Gordon are pretty much continuing into the same timeline, just some things have changed (a "miracle" happened and now she isn't paralyzed.

Wish I had a chart or something to explain. Sheesh.

FYI, if you haven't been reading Batgirl, you probably should. Such a different take on being a superhero IMO. Think a bunch of Batman fans may have boycotted the series when it was announced because how shoddy her paralysis cure was explained (or not explained), but it is a wonderful series thus far. Seeing Barbara try to get back out and fight crime with the fear of being severely hurt again always on her mind is a bit compelling. She probably shouldn't have returned so quickly but she thrusted herself right into the middle of it again.

honestly i was enjoying the whole dynamic of the 'new' bat family more than anything that had happened in the previous few years. dick + damian as batman and robin, tim as red robin, basically filling the nightwing role, steph as batgirl... the whole thing was awesome. and then they just went and stuck to the status quo.

i love bruce and all, but he is so grim all the time. the mix of dick and damian was wonderful. c'est la vie.

Yeah. Me too.

So apparently as part of the New 52's "Second Wave," we're also getting an Earth-2 Superman.

Friday, March 2nd, 2012

By Josh Kushins

Coming in May, DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 “Second Wave” will literally expand the world-building efforts of the comprehensive publishing initiative. With the addition of a parallel Earth that features prominently into both EARTH 2 and WORLDS’ FINEST, the developing narrative will encompass new heroes from distinctly different backgrounds, building on the shared universe in some surprising ways.

“Mourning the death of his beloved, Superman carries both a sadness in his heart along with the weight of Earth 2′s welfare upon on his shoulders, while never showing this and seeming to all that he is this world’s peerless champion,” said EARTH 2 writer James Robinson.

“What would you have to do to teach Superman to kill?” asks EARTH 2 editor Pat McCallum. “He’s endured the loss of his home world, and now the Last Son of Krypton must weather the death of his soul mate Lois Lane. Just how far can you bend the Man of Steel before he breaks?”

Here’s a first look at the Superman of EARTH 2, designed by Jim Lee.

So......Lois is dead and Superman is going crazy. That could be interesting, but in all likelihood will just be a flimsy excuse to do a comic where Superman kills people. And besides, there are already a fair amount of "crazy Superman" comics out there, like Irredeemable or pretty much everything Marvel did with Sentry.

Gotta say, though, I really dig the Earth-2 costume:

http://dcu.blog.dccomics.com/files/2012/03/Superman-Earth-2.jpg

That looks so much better than the Earth-1 design that it honestly makes me angry.

Lock Jaw

Dunno. I was all excited for Earth-2, but it looks like it is going to be a pile of crap. I loved everything to do with Earth-2 pre-Crisis on Infinite Earths. I love the Justice Society of America.

It looks like they are doing their best to make Earth-2 also be all "gritty" and full of crappy redesigns. I shudder to think what Alan Scott is going to look like (though I don't know if it can be worse than the redesign he got just before Flashpoint).

On a slightly happier note, Swamp Thing and Animal Man are going to have a crossover in may I think. If those two series are any indication of the quality of the crossover, it's going to be fucking incredible. Ties in perfectly with the ongoing battle of the Green vs The Red vs The Rot as well. Pretty pumped.

Picked up Swamp Thing #7 today and marked the fuck out. Incredible to see Alec as the Swamp Thing again finally. Really love what they did with him basically failing the Green and them blaming him for the defeat. I'm pretty hooked from here on out.

I also recently got into All Star Western and it is so much better than I originally thought it would be. Good to see Jonah whipping ass in an interesting story and environment. think I'm probably in for the long haul on this one as well.

Edit: Holy shit, I just realized that's drawn by Gary Frank. I loved his previous run on Action Comics, but jeezus. HATE NO TRUNKS SO MUCH

Nowhere Man
03-09-2012, 08:36 PM
Seriously, the more they propagate the no-trunks look, the more it sticks out just how.....wrong.....it looks. Making the belt red and yellow doesn't change the fact that there's too much blue below the waistline and it makes the whole costume look bland.

And the more seams and plates and Nike-Under-Armor speed lines they put on the costume, the thicker it looks, and the less convincing it is that it could possibly fit under Clark Kent's clothing without bulging out (and yes, I know the boots and cape and belt would do that anyway).

I get that normal people don't wear old circus strongman trunks outside their pants, but normal people also don't wear brightly colored spandex and a big red cape. Quit changing shit just for the sheer sake of changing shit.

So they're doing an animated version of the famous Action Comics #775:, aka "What's So Funny About Truth, Justice, and the American Way?" Re-titled simply as Superman vs The Elite.

Looks pretty good, but I'm a little worried that a lot of the character moments from the comic are going to be overlooked in favor of extended action sequences, like what they did to Tower of Babel when it became Justice League: Doom. Still, Action 775 is an amazing comic, so hopefully the adaptation will be up to snuff:

I am seriously loving Young Justice. The animation's slick and stylish, the characters are all really complex and interesting, there's a great selection of villains that go beyond your usual suspects (though the big-name villains are still major players), and it does a great job of representing the DC Universe as a whole, rather than just one aspect of it per show. If there was ever one criticism I had about the Timm-verse, it was always that the Gotham heroes and villains usually got preferential treatment over everyone else's (since the old DCAU spun off from the Batman series), but Young Justice makes just about everyone awesome.

I can't wait for the whole mole reveal! The shit is so captivating. I love the fact that superman is generally nowhere to be found. Batman is limited in his role too. The kids really take center stage, and the enemies are so damn enthralling.

Speaking of Superman, I love the fact that he's freaked out by Superboy and is visibly uncomfortable being around him. Very few writers are willing to give Supes such a glaring character flaw, or go too far and make him a total jackass so someone like Batman can verbally slap him around for it. But it's a great way to make the Man of Steel look vulnerable, having him feel violated that someone stole his DNA and cloned him (especially since that 'someone' is Cadmus, funded by Lex Luthor) and therefore isn't ready or willing to be the father-figure that Superboy needs.

And even if Conner does come off like a whiny teenage bitch in some episodes, it does make a lot of sense that he'd be so loaded down with issues with all of that going on.

The first post in this thread:

Superman Returns Sequel:

Bryan Singer appearently has better things to do: instead of moving on to the next Superman feature, he's working on a 'thriller' with Tom Cruise starring. Odd, he seemed so down with Supe's that I thought he'd start out on the next one atleast at a pace faster than the gap between X1 and X2. It must be noted that Singer has a history of finding better things to do. There were rumors that the next Superman would be shelved and JLA (see below) would kick a kick-start early with Brandon Routh starring. Those rumors were quickly dissolved with the powers to be saying the next Superman (rumored to called "Man of Steel")[Wooo] is going just fine, with Metallo and Brainiac as possible villains.[pfft] The gun-turrent dude from 'Returns (Eye-of-Steel scene) may even have been John Corben...

Kate Bosworth may not return.[And everybody else]

Batman Begins Sequel:

Most of us are pretty much up to speed here: The movie will be called "The Dark Knight" with the most talked about news being Jokers inclusion as the central villain. Joker ofcourse is being bought to us by Heath Ledger with a darker edge about the character than the stuff we've already seen.[Understatement of the thread] The movie should begin production right about now, with a release next Summer. The batsuit will be updated for anyone who cares, with an emphasis on 'cloth'. There's also talk of a Bat-Cycle, too. Cool. The theme of 'Begins was fear, and the theme for Dark Knight may be "things getting worse before they get better." They say the title also also has multiple meanings. Could Gotham City suffer some kind of mass blackout while the Joker goes on a killing spree? Note that many of Joker's earlier comic exploits usually had him pulling some city-wide crisis that Batman had to work double-time to fix.[Oh yeah] Also in the movie is Harvey Dent played by Aaron Eckhart. His inclusion reveals the villain for Batman's third feature.[Nah]

Katie Holmes will not return. She's been replaced by Captain Marvel's sister, Maggie Gyllenhaal.

Captain Marvel:

SHAZAAM!!! And with a blast of thunder, Jake Gyllenhaal (Day After Tommorrow) is most surely, very likely, gonna maybe portray Captain Marvel (one of the few characters who could beat Superman's ass without Krrrryptonite). I'm kinda definately sure of the possibility of his consideration.[Glad I was wavy on this one]

Flash:

Ryan Renalds is up for the part as Wally West. For the most part I agree with this casting. They're talking about getting into the science of super-sonic speed rather than 'him running really fast'.[In Blackest Day]

Wonder Woman:

Joss Whedon dropped out of the project, which disappoints me to no end. There's also talk of setting it in WW2's era. This may have been in the old comics but really... c'mon...[No prob, he'll serve us well soon]

JLA:

Okay... WB really wants to get this thing going, abondoning their old plan of having 'the big three' set their movie franchises first then teaming them up (would've took too long anyway). I'm sure Marvel pressing for their Avengers feature has a little to do with that. Brandon Routh is definately heading up this one[Eh], but Christian Bale didn't seem likely to appear as the Bat because A) the current Batman creative team doesn't wish to merge their darker realistic Batman with a likely bright-n-epic team-up feature and B) JLA is moving on faster than the new Batman franchise can catch up with.[HA!] Still, Christian Bale has said that he signed to three contracts with the last one being "some sort've team-up."[He also yells production people] It appears Batman will be on the team afterall (thank GOD). I wonder if Wonder Woman will make the team, her franchise being on the fritz. I also wonder what other heroes will make the team...

So what do you guys think? Exciting couple of years ahead?

So yeah......apparently they already started season 2 of Young Justice, and it's........different. Really different.

After wrapping up the arc with Vandal Savage at the end of Season 1, the series skips ahead 5 years. Zatanna and Rocket have joined the Justice League, and Robin (now Nightwing), Miss Martian, and Superboy are mentoring the new team--which consists of the new Robin (Tim Drake; apparently they're skipping Jason Todd), Batgirl, Wonder Girl, Blue Beetle, Lagoon Boy, Bumblebee, Beast Boy, and some guy named 'Mal Duncan' who I don't recognize. Apparently the whole season (subtitled "Invasion") is about, as you'd expect, an alien invasion of Earth. Right now the threat are these little goblin-like aliens called 'Kroloteans,' but the real invasion is probably gonna be a heavy-hitter like Brainiac or Darkseid.

I'm legitimately disappointed that they skipped so much time, missing out on an awful lot of stuff, including what happened to Vandal Savage and the Light. But the new season does have potential.

I'm still half expecting it to be some kind of parallel series, or like a "Days of the Future Past" thing where the future turns out to be horrible and they have to go back to the team's early days to stop it, or something.

On the other hand, it is really cool seeing a fresh crop of heroes on the team. It should be pretty interesting to see just how much everyone has changed over the missing 5 years. And hey, the first episode has goddamn LOBO in it!

The CW has officially picked up "Arrow"

“After a violent shipwreck, billionaire playboy Oliver Queen was missing and presumed dead for five years before being discovered alive on a remote island in the Pacific. When he returns home to Starling City, his devoted mother Moira, much-beloved sister Thea, and best friend Tommy welcome him home, but they sense Oliver has been changed by his ordeal on the island. While Oliver hides the truth about the man he’s become, he desperately wants to make amends for the actions he took as the boy he was. Most particularly, he seeks reconciliation with his former girlfriend, Laurel Lance. As Oliver reconnects with those closest to him, he secretly creates the persona of Arrow – a vigilante – to right the wrongs of his family, fight the ills of society, and restore Starling City to its former glory. By day, Oliver plays the role of a wealthy, carefree and careless philanderer he used to be – flanked by his devoted chauffeur/bodyguard, John Diggle – while carefully concealing the secret identity he turns to under cover of darkness. However, Laurel’s father, Detective Quentin Lance, is determined to arrest the vigilante operating in his city. Meanwhile, Oliver’s own mother, Moira, knows much more about the deadly shipwreck than she has let on – and is more ruthless than he could ever imagine.“

Hopefully they actually call him "Green Arrow" and not just "Arrow" like it seems.

DC Comics plans to reintroduce a character as gay in a future issue, it has been revealed.

Co-publisher Dan DiDio previously said that the company would not change the sexual orientation of an existing superhero and would bring in a new one altogether.

But at Kapow Comic Convention in London on Sunday, he revealed that an existing character - who was previously assumed to be straight - will become ‘one of our most prominent gay characters’, according to comic blog BleedingCool.com.

Senior VP Sales Bob Wayne said DiDio’s view ‘had evolved’, comparing the shift to Barack Obama’s recent endorsement of same-sex marriage.

DiDio did not specify which character would ‘come out’ or in which issue it would be featured.

But Courtney Simmons, DC Entertainment’s senior vice president of publicity, told ABC News that it would be soon.

'One of the major iconic DC characters will reveal that he is gay in a storyline in June,' Simmons told the network.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2147928/Is-Batman-gay-Major-DC-Comics-character-come-closet.html#ixzz1vbe0ReAM

That's fine and all, but what I don't get (aside from the sales/PR bump for the next few issues) is why do they need to go into the characters love lives? Or at least change it up some. It seldom amounts to anything anyway except for use as some boring page filler and they usually end up in the same fashion with the guy saving the day, but losing the girl because he was late for a date.

Of course I was also opposed to Damien Wayne/the idea of Robin in general and Daken so what do I apparently know?

Although as I was thinking about this I doubt this is really a "iconic" character that they are relaunching. If it was they would likely be out already and aside from Captain Marvel and maybe the Manhunter or one of the lesser Green Lanterns they have pretty much brought out all of the "iconic" names I believe.

*sigh*

Does anyone actually like or dislike character based on what demographic they belong to? Do white fans only like Batman because he's white? Are Americans less likely to read Wolverine because he's Canadian? It drives me up the fucking wall that DC and Marvel both seem to think that they can sell comics about characters whose sole defining characteristic is what community they're supposed to represent.

And if they're trying to appeal to new audiences, then how hard is it to create a new character? But then, why bother coming up with a character whose personality and life experiences accurately reflect that particular walk of life, when you could just take an existing character, retcon their history out of existence, and exploit their name value as a cheap publicity stunt?

Also, ten bucks says it's one of the Green Lanterns.

Characters need love lives so supervillains can kill their partners by throwing them off bridges, stuffing them in fridges and what have you.

Does seem like a bit of a cheap publicity stunt though.

Pretty much agree with Nowhere Man. Always felt that way about certain characters being created specifically for certain demographics.

Yeah, it's a cheap little publicity stunt, but every gay person in the world isn't suddenly going to start buying DC Comics just because one character is gay.

I'll be honest, I always kinda hated the Dark Knight Returns. I know it's got this pedigree of being a legendary game-changing comic (never mind that Denny O'Neill had been writing a 'dark and gritty' Batman for like a decade before Frank Miller came along), but Miller's artwork was always distractingly ugly to me. And the writing.....I mean, everyone laughs at Frank Miller nowadays after All-Star Batman and Robin and DKSR and Holy Terror, but I really don't see the difference between TDKR and those later comics. It's a good time capsule for the gaudy excess of the 80s, but not something I really feel like revisiting.

I did like the DKR parody that they did in Batman the Animated Series, though:

Green Lantern Comes Out Of The Closet
In a DC Comics universe-wide reboot, Alan Scott (the original Green Lantern) is now an openly gay superhero. His new storyline will be revealed in Earth 2 issue No. 2, which comes out Wednesday.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the writer of Earth 2 James Robinson explains the change:
"The original version of Alan Scott was an older man, and he had a superpowered son, Obsidian, who was gay. The fact that Scott was young now [thanks to a universe-wide reboot] meant Obsidian no longer existed. I thought it was a shame that DC was losing such a positive gay character. I said, 'Why not make Alan Scott gay?' To Dan DiDio’s credit, when I suggested it to him, there wasn’t a moment’s hesitation."

The superhero was originally introduced in 1940 and fathered two children. He was the character DC co-publisher Dan DiDio teases audiences about earlier this month. In the reboot, Alan Scott has a boyfriend, Sam.

Well, I did call it when I said it'd be one of the Green Lanterns. I was honestly expecting it to be Kyle, though.

But yeah, making it Alan Scott just really enforces the "we're doing this as a cheap publicity stunt" feel the whole thing has. They make a big announcement about how a 'major' character is coming out, and then it's a parallel universe version of one of the Golden Age heroes, who hadn't really been a major player in years anyway. So they've got the name-value of GL, but didn't actually pick one of the main Earth-1 Lanterns to avoid fan backlash.

Though I gotta say... reading Earth 2... that is the way to go if you are going to do a reboot.

Throw all past continuity out the door, even if it gets rid of popular legacy characters, and start from scratch with origin stories.

I have actually enjoyed the first two issues, aside from the Alan Scott gay thing which comes across as mad "awkward" and "forced".
